Effie Lee Middlebrook

The family of Effie Lee Middlebrook celebrates a life well lived today as she went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 7, 2008 - her 91st birthday. She was born on June 7, 1917 to Chester Urbin and Ethel (Elliott) James in Lubbock. Mrs. Middlebrook attended Lubbock High School and graduated in 1935. Effie Lee married Robert Clifton Middlebrook on January 17, 1939 in Lubbock. She was a farmer's wife, homemaker, and beloved mother and grandmother. Effie Lee was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shallowater for over 80 years, where she used her talents as pianist and organist, and for over 40 years, she volunteered for various weddings and funerals, and to entertain her family. She was a member of the Lubbock Organ Society.

Those left to cherish her memory are one son, Marvin Doyce Middlebrook and wife, Paula of Lubbock; one daughter, Ruth Marie Enger and husband, Don of Lubbock; four grandchildren, grandson Randy and wife, Kim; granddaughter, Patti and husband James Simpson; grandson, Clay and wife Kristyn Enger; and granddaughter, Camie and husband Jay Holcombe; and eight great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Robert Clifton Middlebrook on February 11, 1965; and one sister, Juanita Ruth Wood.

Family will greet friends Monday, June 9, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at White Funeral Home. Celebration of Life Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at First Methodist Church of Shallowater with Dr. Max Browning and Rev. Everett Statler officiating. Interment will follow at the City of Lubbock cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Methodist Church, 809 Texas, Shallowater, Tx 79363.

Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Dolores Marie Aycock

Dolores Marie Aycock, 93, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Friday, June 6, 2008. She died peacefully at home. Graveside services and interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 9 with the Rev. Jim Brown officiating.

Dolores was born September 4, 1914 in Comanche, Okla. to Alfred Lawrence and Maude Mae White. She had one brother, A.L. White, Junior. After graduating from Comanche High School, she moved to Big Spring, where she worked in the offices of J.C. Penney and Montgomery Ward. Dolores married Hobson D. Aycock on January 20, 1940 in Little Rock, Ark.. They moved to Lubbock in 1946.

Dolores was a talented seamstress and antique collector. She was a member of Monterey Baptist Church. Dolores demonstrated her strong faith and love for Jesus Christ in her daily contact with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and husband. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jean Moore, and a grandson, Chris Moore.

The family requests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock, 1102 Slide Rd., Ste. 3, Lubbock, Tx 79416.

Billy Guy Thomas

Billy Guy Thomas, 73, of Lubbock, formerly of San Antonio, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2008.

He was born on November 13, 1934 in Clarendon to Dick and Ethel (Goldston) Thomas. He graduated from Olton High School in 1953 and attended Texas Tech University. Later, he served for two years in the United States Army. After being discharged, he settled in Olton where he farmed for several years. He was a Christian and a member of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio.

He is survived by his daughters, Denise Dean and husband Tom of Weatherford; Laura Hill and husband Steven of Lubbock; Jennifer Halvey and husband John of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Michael Thomas and wife Kerri of Allen; 10 grandchildren; and sisters, Tommy Amundsen of Canyon Lake, and Curtis Scruggs of Olton.

Guy is preceded in death by a brother, Jack Thomas, and sister, Dorothy Bird.

Memorial contributions may be made to VistaCare Hospice, 1717 Norfolk Ave, Lubbock, TX 79416.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

"B.J." Benjamin Jacob Gonzalez

"B.J." Benjamin Jacob Gonzalez, 24, of Plainview, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008 in England. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at College Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Leonel Gonzalez officiating and Rev. Efrain Gonzalez assisting. Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008 in Groover cemetery in Groover, under the direction of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.

Mr. Gonzales was born April 7, 1984 in Carrizo Springs, to Leonel and Brenda Gonzalez. He graduated from Lanier High School in Austin in August of 2001. He enlisted in the Marines in December 2001 and received a medical discharge in May of 2002. Mr. Gonzalez attended Wayland Baptist University and was a member of College Heights Baptist Church. B.J. enlisted in the Air Force in May of 2004 and attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. He went to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida for his technical training for "EOD" Explosive Ordinance Disposal. After graduation from his technical school he was assigned to Patrick Air Force Base at Cocoa Beach, Florida. B.J. was active at First Baptist Church in Merritt Island, Florida. Mr. Gonzalez did a tour of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was re-assigned in May of 2008 to Lakenheath Air Force Base in the United Kingdom. He was involved in an accident and went to be with his Lord on June 3, 2008.

B.J. is survived by his parents: Leonel and Brenda Gonzalez of Plainview; two brothers, Efrain Gonzalez and wife Jennifer of Magnolia, and Samuel Gonzalez of Plainview; two sisters, Esther Gonzalez of Magnolia and Rachel Janezich of Plainview; his grandfather, Leonardo Gonzalez, Sr., of Harlingen; his granny, Opal Johnson of Plainview; niece and nephew, Alexis and Jacob Gonzalez; thirteen aunts and uncles, and twenty nine cousins. He was preceded in death by one sister, Stefani Gonzalez; his "Pa, " Hack Johnson; and his Grandma, Petra Gonzalez.

B.J. will be missed by his family, his EOD brothers and sisters and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kornerstone Funeral Directors in Plainview.

Charlie Mae Phylow

Services for Charlie Mae Phylow, 82, of Lubbock, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2008, at Alexander Chapel C.O.G.I.C. Services will be under the direction of Ossie Curry Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the City of Lubbock cemetery.

Charlie Mae Phylow was born Nov. 30, 1925, to the late Charley and Lilly Garrett. She went home to be with the Lord on June 6, 2008. She is survived by four sons, Odell Deary (Ola Mae), Wilbert Deary (Nell), Melvin Deary, Tommy Williams(Charlene); and one daughter, Johnnie Mae Stigers Deary.

Viewing will be from 1-7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Ossie Curry Funeral Home.

Humberto (Bert) Lara

Our loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather went home to rejoice with our heavenly Lord on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at age 73. Bert was born Jan. 7, 1935, in Nueva Rosita Coah, to Thomas and Felipa Lara. Bert married Sally Vasquez on Jan. 30, 1958. They were married for 50 years. He retired from BFI in January of 1998. He was well known for his barbeques, his laughter, and his unforgettable stories. He touched many lives with his generosity and he never met a stranger. Bert was preceded in death by his father, Thomas.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife; daughter, Lucy Gutierrez (Richard); sons, Robert and Pete (Norma) Lara; mother, Felipa; one brother; two sisters; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel. Celebration of life services will be Friday, June 13, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, officiated by Father Andres Mendoza. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Kathryn Hunter

Graveside services for Kathryn Hunter, 79, of Lubbock, will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 12th in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven.

She passed away on Tuesday, June 10th.

Kathryn was born in Ralls, to William Frank and Pauline Jones Sellers. She married John Hunter in December 1964, and he preceded her in death in 2006. She taught school for 16 years in Cone, Crosbyton and Lubbock. She also taught ceramics at 1st United Methodist Church for 23 years. She had been a member of 1st UMC since the age of 13.

Kathryn was preceded in death by a brother, Norris Sellers in 2007.

Survivors include a daughter, Susanne and husband Trent Long of Lubbock; two sisters, Marie and husband Nelson Brixey of Greenwood, Ark, and Barbara and husband Buddy Lutrick of Floydada; two brothers, Clayton and Kenneth Sellers of Ralls.

The family gratefully acknowledges the care provided by the nursing staff at Covenant Medical Center, South 10.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock.

Luella Gates Harris

Luella Gates Harris, 89, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Southwest Regional Medical Complex of Lubbock from cancer. She had been hospitalized since Feb. 25, 2008. Luella was born June 6, 1918, in Danville, Ark. Luella was united in marriage to Grady Harris, who preceded her in death. Survivors include three granddaughters, Chanzella Scroggins (Robert) of Kansas City Mo., Beatrice Smart of Arlington, and Lillian Smart of Dennison; nine great-grandchildren; seven step-children; and three special God children, Ruby Faye, Tyshuna and Tray Robinson.

Viewing will be held Friday, June 13 from 9-11 a.m. and funeral service will follow at 11:30a.m. at St. Matthew Baptist Church. Burial will be at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Griffin Mortuary.

Vivian Carmickle

Services for Vivian Carmickle, 80, of Abernathy, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2008, in the First United Methodist Church, Abernathy. The family will gather to receive friends from 9 a.m. until service time at the Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Abernathy cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy, TX.

Mrs. Carmickle died Tuesday morning, June 10, 2008, in Lubbock.

She was born in Como on May 30, 1928, and was the youngest of 11 children born to J. M. and Dovie Heflin. In 1933, the Heflin family moved to Plainview. She married Lon Carmickle on Jan. 5, 1949, in Plainview. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, was a member of the Eastern Star and was active in various bridge clubs over her 60 years as an Abernathy resident. The Carmickles owned and operated Lon Cleaners and Fashions. She always considered Abernathy her home.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of almost 50 years on Sept. 23, 1998.

She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Carmickle Smith and Patti Carmickle Walsh and her husband Steve, all of Lubbock. One of her favorite joys in life was spending time with her beloved grandchildren, Cherie Smith and Tamara Smith, both of Lubbock, Whitney Walsh of Fort Worth, and Linc Walsh of Bettles, Alaska. She is also survived by her sister, Dorris Borum of Plainview; and many, many special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial donations be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 704 Ave. D, Abernathy, TX 79311 or a favorite charity.
