MARGARET JOHNSON HERMAN

Margaret Arvilla Johnson Herman, 93, passed away May 9, 2011 in the Austin, Tx. home of her son, Guy Herman.

A service in celebration of her life will be held at at 1:30 p.m. June 4, 2011 at the First Methodist Church in Palacios. The service will be preceded by a luncheon at the adjacent Weimer Hall at noon.

Margaret was born to Guy Johnson and Tenna Hubbard Johnson in Palacios, Tx. on Jan. 25, 1918. One of eight children of kind and gentle parents, she enjoyed a magical childhood in Matagorda County. She graduated from Palacios High School and attended Del Mar College in Corpus Christi.

She married Gilbert S. Herman before World War II and raised six children. The family followed Gilbert’s military career to post-war Germany and Japan as well as several places around Texas before settling in Corpus Christi, where Margaret had a long, successful career as an office manager for General Export, Iron, and Metals. In Corpus she was also a long-time active member of Aldersgate Methodist Church.

Margaret was a kind and gracious woman with a wonderfully positive disposition. She read widely and was extensively self-educated. She was a master gardener, keeping a bountiful garden each year until she was almost 90 years old. And she was especially devoted to her children and grandchildren, serving as the beloved matriarch of a large, close family.

She is survived by her brothers Ballard Johnson and wife Louise of Aransas Pass and Mack Johnson and wife Adene of Conroe; her daughter Anne Harrison and husband Brian of Arizona and Michigan; her sons Nick Herman and wife Dee of Houston, Guy Herman and wife Lynn Blais of Austin, Michael Herman and wife Teresa of Highland Village, and Craig Herman and wife Jan of Fredericksburg; and her daughter-in-law Elaine Herman of Baytown; as well as 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert Herman, her son Wayne Herman, and a grandson, Brad Herman.

MILDRED CUNNINGHAM JARVIS

Graveside services for Mildred Cunningham Jarvis, 85, were held May 10, 2011 at Memory Gardens cemetery in Victoria, Tx. A memorial service followed at Grace Presbyterian Church in Victoria with Rev. Dan Fultz officiating.

Mrs. Jarvis was born Oct. 11, 1925. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 4, 2011, after a short illness.

Mildred grew up in Palacios, Tx. where she loved dancing with the soldiers at the USO. She then joined the Corps of Nurses at the end of WWII. While she was working as a registered nurse at a hospital in Wharton she was introduced to William Jarvis, a pastoral student working as a teacher in Kingsville, who was not given to dancing. They soon married and served the Lord together at Presbyterian Pan American School in Kingsville, and several church communities in northeast and south Texas.

After pastoring the First Presbyterian Churches in Falfurrias and Premont, for 15 years, her husband retired from the ministry and they moved to Victoria, where Mildred continued to work at Devereux Foundation until her retirement. She was a volunteer at Citizens Hospital in Victoria until she moved to Memphis for a time with her daughter Recently she and her son, Charles, moved back to Austin.

Mildred loved her God, family, nursing career and music. She loved working at the church as an officer and with the women of the church and participating in the church voice and bell choirs. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sister Janice Harvey; sons Robert and Charles; daughter Robin Mokry; grandchildren, Michelle Morkry Bakewell and Matthew Mokry; and great-granddauther Liesel Mokry.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

SANDRA LOGGINS BROWN

Sandra Loggins Brown, 68, beloved wife and mother went to be with our Lord and Savior on May 2, 2011.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marie Loggins, and infant son, Jerry D. Brown, Jr.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry D. Brown; brother, Bobby (Jane) Loggins; daughters Cheryl (Billy) Alley and Laurie (Tim) Garner of Birmingham, AL; son, James (Melissa) Brown of Palacios; grandchildren Joey (Alexandria) Alley, Bethany (Tim) Rigg, Ashleigh (Brad) Davis, Candice Alley, Christian Garner, Eric Hatfield and Miranda Garner of Alabama and Christopher and Taylor Brown of Palacios; great-grandchildren, Jackson Trusty and Ally Davis; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jerry and Sandra lived in Palacios for several years in the 80’s. She attended First Baptist Church of Palacios at that time and made many long time friends in Palacios. She was a devoted servant to our Lord and taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and GAs through the years. She was involved with Women on Mission and was a member of Republic Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed by her adoring family and friends.

Funeral services were held on May 4, 2011 with family, friends and pastor Brother Guy Moore officiating.

RICHARD BYRON HAMLIN

Funeral services for Richard Byron Hamlin, 69, of Palacios, Tx., were held April 28, 2001 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Chaplain Don Storey officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.

Mr. Hamlin was born Dec. 7, 1941 in Palacios to the late Eldon H. Hamlin, Sr. and Dorothy Thompson Hamlin. He passed away April 26, 2011.

He is survived by daughters Sheila Valcik and husband Gus of Palacios, Vickie Edwards of Palacios, and C. J. Wallace and husband Mike of San Angelo, Tx.; brother Kenneth Hamlin and wife Yvonne of Palacios; 7 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Richard Byron Hamlin, Jr., sister Dorothy Marie Hill and brother Eldon H. Hamlin, Jr.

Pallbearers were Michael Penland, Brandon Edwards, Philip Hamlin, Allen Adams, Albert Gonzales and Eldon Hill.

ROBERT G. CHRISTIANSON

A Memorial Service for Robert G. Christianson, 85, of Palacios, Tx., was held April 17, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church in Palacios.

Mr. Christianson was born April 18, 1925 in LaCrosse, WI to the late Casper and Esther Houska Christianson. He passed away April 10, 2011.

He graduated from LaCrosse Central High School and the University of Wisconsin. He was part of the ‘Great Generation’ and served in the Navy as an AEM during World War II. He worked with the FAA until retiring. Later he went to work for STP and retired again. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and Elder.

He is survived by his cousin Kathy Morrison and niece Linda Hunt.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia, in 1995; his second wife, Dottie, in July 2009; and son, Neal, in September 2009.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios or to the charity of donor’s choice.

LINDA VERNON HILLYER

Linda Vernon Hillyer of Palacios, Tx. took her place among the angels on April 14, 2011 after a sudden and brief fight with an infection.

The Lord granted her peace and took her home to reunite with her mother, Mary Powell; brother, Gary Powell; and many other family and friends who passed on before her.

She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Milton and Katherine Powell of Jackson, Wyoming; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Michael Cannon of Bay City, Tx; three grandchildren–Piper, Joshiah and one she was patiently waiting to meet in October of 2011 also of Bay City.

The sudden loss of her life has left holes in our hearts and we will miss her.

ROBERTA GRACE PETERSON BARRIER

Funeral services for Roberta Grace Peterson Barrier, 78, of Port Lavaca, Tx., were held April 10, 2011 at at the Port Lavaca Church of Christ with Shan Jackson officiating. Interment was at Olivia cemetery.

Mrs. Barrier was born May 2, 1932, in Olivia to Ola Mae Huddleston Peterson and the late Oscar Alvin Peterson. She passed away peacefully April 6, 2011 surrounded by family.

She graduated as valedictorian from Palacios High School in 1949. She began her career at Bauer Smith Dredging Company and spent several years at First State Bank and Trust Company where she forged many friendships that were to last a lifetime. She left the bank to raise her family before returning to work in the 1980’s at Formosa Plastics Corporation before retiring from STP Nuclear Plant as a Cost Controller.

She was admired and respected by all who knew her and was a positive influence to many of the young men and women she had the opportunity to work with through the years. She was a faithful member of the Port Lavaca Church of Christ, finding tremendous joy in service to others. She was also a member of the Calhoun County Quilt Guild where she was able to share her love for heirloom sewing. Her legacy will continue through the many lives she touched and example instilled in others. Her greatest desire was for her family to be faithful to the Lord and glorify Him throughout their lives.

She is survived by her mother; daughter, Starla Robin Barrier Mehaffey; sons, David Earl Barrier and Daniel Wayne Barrier; brother, Robert Marvin Peterson; grandchildren, Jonathan Barrier, Eric Barrier, Garrett Barrier, Austin Cox, McKenna Cox and Jessica Barrier and one great-grandchild. She spent the last four months of her life in Utah with Starla and her family and visiting specialists at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center. She enjoyed every minute of her visit, but was ready to return home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Earl “Sonny” Barrier; father and brother, David Alvin Peterson.

Pallbearers were Allen Abraham, Dale Abraham, Paul Abraham, Wayne Abraham, Austin Cox, Dallis Douglas, Walter Rosenbrock, Gerald Griffith, Mike McGuire, Kenneth Peterson and Tommy Pilgrim.

Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Paul Bunnell, Charles Crutcher, Rick Gangluff, James McSpadden, Michael Moore, Paul Poston, Edwin Simons, Milam Simons, and Tom Underwood.

JOHN KENNETH RAMPMEIER

A Memorial Mass for John Kenneth 'Ken' Rampmeier, 78, of High Point, North Carolina, was held April 7, 2011 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point.

Mr. Rampmeier was born Jan. 23, 1933 in the Deutschburg Community near Palacios, Tx. to the late Alvin and Rubye Rampmeier. He died April 4, 2011 at the High Point Hospice Home after a brave battle with cancer.

The first in his family to go to college, Ken earned his degree at Texas A&I-Kingsville;, followed by service in the U.S. Army. He was then employed for 29 years by Union Carbide, first at Seadrift where he met his wife of 46 years, Carolyn Tasin Rampmeier. His career then took him to Texas City, West Virginia and Connecticut, before retiring to High Point where his love of golf led him to work at the local golf course for many years.

Ken was a loving husband, father and Paw Paw.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; brother Al of Bryan, Tx.; sisters, Norma and Janice of Palacios; son Keith of San Diego, CA; daughter Cara Dudley and husband David of Charlotte, NC, and grandchildren Christopher, Victoria, Kathryn and Matthew John Dudley.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church-Building Fund, 4145 Johnson St., High Point NC 27265 and the Hospice Home at High Point, 1801 Westchester Dr, High Point NC 27262.
