JoAn FRANKLIN STEWART

Funeral Services for JoAn (Franklin) Stewart, 76, of Lubbock, Tx., were held Oct. 6, 2007 at First United Methodist Church in Snyder, Tx. with Rev. Buddy Payne officiating.

Mrs. Stewart was born May 26, 1931 in Wink, Tx. She died Sept. 22, 2007 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

She moved to Snyder in 1962 and resided in Snyder till moving to Lubbock in April of this year. She married Robert H. "Bob" Stewart on Dec. 21, 1962 in Midland. She was a homemaker and member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband Robert H. Stewart; daughter Annette Woods-Tornick of Santa Fe, NM; son David S. Stewart of Lubbock; sister Betty Miller of Odessa, Tx.; and brothers John M. Franklin of Lubbock, James Franklin of San Antonio and Tommy Franklin of Albuquerque, NM.

NORVAL W. MCCARTY

Memorial services for Norval W. McCarty, 78, of Palacios will be held at a future date at the National cemetery in Baltimore, MD.

Mr. McCarty was born Nov. 19, 1928 in Baltimore, MD to the late Frank N. and Alice L McCarty. He died Sept. 24, 2007 at Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Mr. McCarty was a disabled veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his brother, Frank A. McCarty, sister-in-law Kathleen M. Price; sister Patricia Baker; nephews John R. and Kathy Baker and Larry McCarthy; nieces Judy and Lawrence Purser, Robin and Jason Little, Cherrie Juran, Jeanie Brandon, Mary Alice Rydall, Teresa Ellis and many great-nephews and great-nieces..

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dave McCarty, and sisters Elizabeth Probst and Mary Bell Plitzko.

Condolences may be sent to Pat Baker at P.O. Box 102, Palacios or Frank McCarty, 408 Matagorda, Palacios.

ETHEL B. ABRAHAM

Funeral services for Ethel B. Abraham, 96, of Palacios, were held Sept. 26, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Palacios with Rev. June White officiating. Interment was at the Olivia cemetery.

Mrs. Abraham was born Oct. 3, 1910 in Olivia, TX to the late Servan and Emma Wilson Swenson. She died Sept. 23, 2007.

She was a longtime resident of the Olivia and Palacios area and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived daughters Lorraine O’Connell of Arkansas, LaVerne Zandanel of Pennsylvania, Betty Amador of Mont Belview, TX and Sandra Dudley of Humble, TX; sons Robert Abraham of Palacios, Herbert Abraham of Virginia and Dennis Abraham of West Columbia; brother Ralph Swenson of Louisiana; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Herbert Abraham.

Pallbearers will be Robert Dudley, Michael Dudley, Martin Amador, Ronald Rathnau, Dwight Elledge and Robert Janis.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 25) at the funeral home.

Arrangements are with Palacios Funeral Home, 361-972-2012.

SUE CAROLYN UPTON JAHNS

Funeral services were held for Sue Carolyn Upton Jahns, 71, Sept. 19, 2007 at St. James Lutheran. Interment followed at Ganado cemetery.

Mrs. Jahns was born Sept. 11, 1936 in Alto, TX to Everett and Lillie Matlock Upton. She died Sept. 17 in Ganado.

Mrs. Jahns was a member of the Blessing American Legion and Midfield Community Church.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Jahns of Ganado, daughter Peggy Jahns New of Ganado, son Everertt Jones of Ganado, brother Bob Upton of McRae, AK, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jahns was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ginger Upton, brothers Jack and Kenneth Upton and sons Gerald Jones and Michael Fritz Jahns.

Pallbearers were Vernon Hunt, Howard Shafer, Joe Ray Beard, Gene Woodson, Kyle Roy, Douglas Larson and Fernando Gonzales.

Memorials may be made to Crown Hospice or Blessing American Legion Auxiliary.

MRS. DON THU NGUYEN

A funeral Mass for Mrs. Don Thu Nguyen, 47, of Palacios, was held Sept. 15, 2007 at St. Anthony of Padua Church Vietnamese Apostolate with Father Joseph Pham officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.

Mrs. Nguyen was born Dec. 4, 1959 in Sao Bien, Vietnam to Mr. Lai Van Nguyen and Mrs. Mo Thi Nguyen. She died Sept. 11, 2007 in Victoria.

Mrs. Nguyen has been a resident of Palacios for the past 29 years, and a Member of St. Anthony of Padua Church Vietnamese Apostolate.

She is survived by her husband Tran Doc Dinh; mother Mo Thi Nguyen; daughters Crystal Diem Dinh and Diana Tu Dinh; son Jeffery Nhat Dinh all of Palacios; sisters Hor Thin Nguyen and Ngat Thu Nguyen both of Palacios, Anh Nguyen, Thao Nguyen and Hang Le Nguyen all of Houston; brothers Nghi Van Nguyen, Hor Thai Nguyen, Son Hai Nguyen all of Palacios, and Ha Nguyen of Houston.

She was preceded in death by her father Lai Van Nguyen and son Emanuel Nhat Dinh.

CARRIE MAE JUREK

Graveside services for Carrie Mae Jurek, 81, of Palacios, were held Sept. 12, 2007 at the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Rev. Robert LeBlanc officiating.

Mrs. Jurek was born July 21, 1926 in Wharton, Tx. to the the late Edwin Matula and Helen Janda Matula. She died Sept. 10, 2007 at Palacios Health Care.

Mrs. Jurek had been a resident of Palacios since 1960. She married Denver Milchion Jurek on May 12, 1951 and he preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1990.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed play cards and dominoes along with fishing for bass, perch and bream. Carrie was Lutheran by faith.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Jenkins and husband, Charles of Palacios; son, Larry Ridley and wife, Sherry of Webster; sister, Ida Mae Allen of Boling; brother Chester Matula of Wharton; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Carrie was preceded in death by her daughter; Janet Morgan, son in law, Pat Morgan and sisters; Mary Zahradnik and Helen Pavlicek.

MARIO GARCIA SANCHEZ, SR.

Funeral services for Mario Garcia Sanchez, Sr., 56 of Palacios, TX, were held Sept. 4, 2007 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Robert LeBlanc officiating. Interment was at the Palacios cemetery.

Mr. Sanchez was born June 11, 1951 in Palacios, TX to the late Frank Garcia Sanchez and Mary Garcia Sanchez. He passed away Sept. 1, 2007 in Bay City.

He was a life long resident of Palacios, attended Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Palacios and was employed as a painter at Brock Specialty Services.

He is survived by his wife Beatrice P. Sanchez; daughters Naomi Sanchez and husband Matthew Ortiz, Trina Sanchez, Frances Sanchez, and Beatrice Sanchez; sons Mario Sanchez, Jr. and wife Cynthia, and David Sanchez, all of Palacios; sisters Omega Espinosa of Houston, Josephine Carrizales and Emma Jones, both of Victoria; brothers Christopher D. Sanchez, Sr. of Temple, John M. Sanchez of Victoria, and Dario G. Sanchez of Beeville; and 12 grandchildren.

JUANITA JONES McGINTY

A requiem Eucharist for Juanita Jones McGinty were held Sept. 1, 2007 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Houston. The service will concluded with the burial liturgy in Glenwood cemetery. The Celebrant was The Reverend Ed Stein, a lifelong friend of the family.

Mrs. McGinty was born Aug. 17, 1934 in Greggton, Tx. to Harold Jones and Mary Baker Jones. She died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007 at her home on Carancahua Bay.

She graduated from Longview High School in 1952 and then attended Rice University, where she was Editor of the 1956 Campanile, elected one of Ten Outstanding Seniors graduating in the Class of 1956 with a B.A. in English. On May 4, 1957, she married her Rice classmate, John M. (Jack) McGinty, FAIA, who survives her and with whom she celebrated their 50th Anniversary earlier this year.

The couple has two children of whom they are very proud, Christopher Harold McGinty and Jacqueline McGinty Carlson, as well as five grandchildren, Hunter McGinty, Evan Reed, Jason Carlson, Jack Carlson and Jessica Carlson. Juanita is survived also by her sisters, Mary Winifred Bellido and Harriette Farley.

After graduating from Rice, Juanita devoted her immense talent and energy to the betterment of her family and the world she so deeply cared about. She served on the Board of The Houston Council on Human Relations and as Secretary of the American Civil Liberties Union. She was a founding Board Member and President of the Rice Design Alliance and also served as Vice President of The Association of Rice Alumni. As First Lady of The American Institute of Architects, she and Jack traveled the nation and the world as ambassadors for the AIA, exploring art and architecture and later, with their grandchildren, exploring cuisine and culture. Along the way, she found time to master the art of French cooking, a gift she shared with three grateful generations and that has been memorialized by her family for those yet to come in the book, “Big Mama’s Kitchen.” For the past 25 years, the family home has been on the shores of Carancahua Bay, near Palacios, where Juanita established a grove of Live Oaks, now named in her honor.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Hunter, Evan, Jason, Jack and Jessica along with her son-in-law, Captain Jeffrey Carlson, USN. Friends are invited to visit with the family following the services from 5-7 p.m at the home of Jack’s sister, Elisabeth Laigle, 5414 John Dreaper, Houston, TX 77027.
