ELEANOR ANN LEWIS

Graveside services for Eleanor Ann Lewis, 72, of Palacios, were held Aug. 7 at Highland cemetery in Durant, OK. with Rev. Nancy Taylor officiating.

Mrs. Lewis was born Aug. 5 1934 in Clovis, NM. She died Aug. 4, 2007 in Palacios.

She attended San Angelo High School in San Angelo, TX. She served in the U. S. Air Force for 6 years and worked for Verizon (formerly GTE) from which she retired. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios as well as a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles there.

She was a business woman in Palacios and very active in the Senior Citizens Program and as a member of the Palacios community that she so loved. She was a strong advocate for people and their rights both while working and in her retirement years.

She is survived by her son Terry Miller and his life partner, Steven Young of Portland, OR; her twin brother and sister-in-law Dr. Frank and Gloria Lewis, Dallas; brother and sister-in-law Jim and Marge Lewis of Belen, NM; sisters Lorraine Lewis of Concord, CA, Elizabeth and her husband George Brassovan, Houston, and Charline Eblen of Durant, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Paul Dewey and Lucille Howze Lewis and brothers Paul Jr., John Henry, Sam and Charlie Lewis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Citizens Center, 705 Commerce, Palacios, TX 77465.

RICHARD RIVERA

Funeral services for Richard Rivera, 51, of Palacios were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at the Living Word Church with the Reverend Tony Flores officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.

Mr. Rivera was born May 1, 1956 in Cameron County to Arturo Rivera, Sr. and Dora Cervantez. He died July 18, 2007.

He is survived by his wife Theresa Cruz Rivera, daughters Andrea Le, Dolores Torres and Paula Manrriquez; sons Mario Manrriquez and Simon Rivera; brothers Arturo Rivera, Jr., Jesse Guillen and Anthony Guerra; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Rose Mary Cruz.

Arrangements were with Artero Memorial Chapels of Port Lavaca.

GAIL LAVERNE MURPHY BORN

Funeral services for Gail Laverne Born, 40, of Edna, Tx., were held July 18, 2007 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Edna. Interment was at Memory Garden cemetery in Edna.

Mrs. Born was born in Palacios on June 17, 1967, to Ben and Sarah Murphy. She died July 14, 2007.

Gail is survived by her husband Steven Born of Edna; her parents; sister Susan Hornstien and husband Darren of Goliad; brother Kenneth Clayton Murphy of Bay City; Christy Fitzpatrick, Jessica Konvicka, Colton Fitzpatrick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were James Hebel, Marshall Murphy, David Sappington, Charles Born, Ray Born and Clifford Born.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Edna or the Humane Society.

Arrangements under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home, 361-782-2221.

GLENDA BEN MADALENA

Funeral services for Glenda Ben Madalena, 53, were held July 18, 2007 at the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Houston. Interment was at Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

Mrs. Madalena died July 15, 2007 in Port Lavaca, Tx.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Samuel Madalena; parents, Larry G. and Nan Ortiz; brothers Michael Ben Ortiz, Timothy Ben Ortiz and Robert Ben Ortiz; sister Larry Ann Ott; and eight nieces and nephews.

LEON SMITH

Funeral services for Leon Smith, 81 of Palacios, Tx., were held July 13, 2007 at the First Baptist Church of Palacios with Pastor David Gruhn officiating. Interment was at Hawley cemetery in Blessing.

Mr. Smith was born April 12, 1926 in Ada, OK to Olin Ray Smith and Ruth May Conely Smith. He died July 10, 2007.

He was a longtime resident of Palacios and was a shrimper and a welder. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Palacios and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his daughters Cathy Shearin and husband Bruce of Rocky Mount, NC, Margaret Smith of Palacios, and Terry Brooks and husband David of Victoria, Tx.; son-in-law Delbert Dannels of Bay City, Tx.; sister Kathleen Caldwell of Bay City; grandchildren David Dannels, Dennis Dannels, Christa Haynie, Travis Schulte, Callie Dixon, Dee Ann King, Leon Falks, Kristan Harr, Kathalene Brooks, and Emily Brooks; and great-grandchildren Elizabeth Dannels, Melody Dannels, Emma Haynie, Sydney Haynie, and Wyatt Evans.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathalene Smith; his parents Olin Ray and Ruth Smith; his daughter, Ann Dannels; brother, O.R. Smith; and sister Connie Sutherland.

Pallbearers were Garry Seaman, Greg Seaman, Ricky Milam, Mark Bates, Vernon Bates, Jr., and James Georgi. Honorary pallbearers were the Employees of Gold Coast Seafood and his fellow shrimpers.

Arrangements were with Palacios Funeral Home, Palacios, TX (361) 972-2012.

ROBERT ‘BOB’ KUNEFKE

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Kunefke, Sr., 79, of Palacios, were held July 11, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios with Pastor David Gruhn officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.

Mr. Kunefke was born Nov. 13, 1927 in Winnie, Tx. to the late William Paul Kunefke and Gladys E. Adams Kunefke. He died July 8, 2007.

He served in the US Air Force during WWII. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios and retired from Sun Oil Co. after 36 years of service. He was an avid fisherman, shrimper, hunter and gardener. Everyone around the bay in Palacios knew him as “Uncle Bob”.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ethel Lee Kunefke of Palacios; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl Lynn & Brad Scott of Palacios; son and daughter-in-law Robert “Bobby” Kunefke, Jr. and Chris of Palacios; sister Thelma Standley of Hamshire, TX; brother Leonard D. Kunefke of Palacios; and two grandchildren Amy Lynn Foote of Plano and Nicole Ann Kunefke of Palacios.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph W. Kunefke and Vernon P. Kunefke.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Fields, Ted Bates, Jr., Vernon Bates, Sr., Tom O’Bannion, Art Lang and Johnny Brady. Members of the Truth Seekers Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Palacios.

LURA NELL ANDERS

Graveside services Lura Nell Anders, 78, of Palacios, were held July 9, 2007 at the Palacios cemetery with Colleen Claybourn officiating.

Mrs. Anders was born June 15, 1929 in Elk City, Oklahoma to the late Guy R. Claybourn, Sr. and Blanche L. Kirkwald Claybourn. She died July 4, 2007.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, a member of Athena Club, and an avid birdwatcher.

She is survived by her daughter Rebecca P. L. Raplee of Macomb, IL; sons Robert C. Raplee and Rick C. Raplee both of Nashville, TN, Randall C. Raplee of Lavergne, TN, and Ryan G. Raplee of Macomb, IL; sister Joann Dyson of LaSalle, TX; brothers Guy Claybourn, Jr. and wife Colleen of Palacios, James K. Claybourn and wife Dorothy of Powers, OR, Jon Claybourn and wife Kaye of Bay City; grandchildren Hanna G. Raplee Adkison and Abigail R. Raplee-Adkison; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ray Anders, sister Marian Claybourn Curran and brother Marshall Claybourn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bay City Nature Club or the American Cancer Soceity.

DEBRA LEIGH ARNETT

Funeral services for Debra Leigh Arnett, 53 of Palacios, were held July 7, 2007 at the Palacios Funeral Home with Rev. Don Kopecky officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Friendship cemetery in Chickasaw County, MS under the direction of Houston Funeral Home in Houston, MS (662) 456-3411.

She was born Feb. 27, 1954 in Columbus, MS to Russell Franklin Yeager, Sr. and Hazel Leigh Martin Yeager. She died July 3, 2007 in Bay City, Tx.

She was a resident of Palacios since 1996 and was an instructor at the Texas State Technical College in Palacios.

She is survived by her husband Fred Janise of Palacios, TX; sisters Jennifer McComus of Port Lavaca, TX and Pat Yeager of Ohio; brothers Russell Yeager, Jr. of Port Lavaca, TX and David Yeager of Palacios, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents Russell F. Yeager, Sr. and Hazel Leigh Yeager.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Debra with the American Cancer Society.
