TRAVIS LEE JEWELL

Funeral services for Travis Lee Jewell, 22, of New London, formerly of Mount Pleasant, Hillsboro and Palacios, Tx. were held April 13, 2007 at Palacios Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.

Mr. Jewell was born Oct. 4, 1984 in Palacios. He was the son of Regena Faye Jewell. He died April 5, 2007 at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Ill., as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

He was a 2003 graduate of Harmony High School and was studying criminal justice at Indian Hills Community College. He worked in landscaping. He was of the Christian Faith. He had a passion for art and drawing. He enjoyed derby-car racing and riding snowmobiles. He loved the outdoors and having barbeque parties with friends.

He is survived by his mother, Regena Faye Jewell, of Palacios; grandfather B. J. Jewell of Port Lavaca; grandmother Mary Katherine Jewell of Palacios; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

ANCELMO JUAREZ, JR.

Funeral services for Ancelmo (Al) Juarez, Jr., 61, of New Orleans, LA and formerly of Baytown, Tx, were held April 10, 2007 at St. Patrick’s Church in Houston, Tx.

Mr. Juarez was born Aug. 12, 1945 in New Gulf, Tx. He passed away peacefully on April 4, 2007.

He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1966.

He is survived by his brother, Robert Juarez, of Palacios, Tx., sisters Eva DeLeon and Maria Villarreal Garza of Houston, Tx.; sons Tommy Juarez, of Colorado Springs, CO, Andy Juarez, of Providence RI, Juan Carlos, of Deer Park, Tx, and daughters Angel Hux of Baytown, Tx. and Misti Juarez, of Houston; life companion Mary Reuter and daughter Christian Asevedo of New Orleans, LA; grandchildren Jonas Rodriguez, Jr., Jacob Rodriguez, Joshua Rodriguez, Juliana Marie Hux, and Kayla Alicia Juarez; and numerous family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arnulfo C. Villarreal and Luisa (Amaro) Villarreal.

JANE MARIE ARNOLD

A memorial service for Jane Marie Arnold was held April 7, 2007 at Memorial Baptist Church in El Campo, Tx.

Mrs. Arnold was born March 27, 1948 to Calvin and Lorraine Orsak in Wharton, Tx. Following 18 months of battling an aggressive illness, she died March 29, 2007 in Georgetown, Texas.

Mrs. Arnold is survived by her mother, Lorraine Orsak of Rosenberg, Tx; her 2 sisters, Wilma Russell of Rosenberg, Tx, and Diana Thrash of Bay City, Tx; her 1 brother, Danny Orsak of Sealy, Tx; her sons Dennis Orsak of Arkansas and John Breithaupt of El Campo, Tx; her daughter, Lorie Lankford of Georgetown, Tx; her son, Lawrence W Arnold IV of Blessing, Tx; her children's spouses; and her eight grandchildren, Scott, Josh, Shelby, Kellina, Aubrie, Emily, Lawrence Arnold V, and Leah.

She was preceded in death by her father, Calvin; her sister, Carolyn, and niece Dondie; and her husband, Lawrence W. Arnold Jr.

JESSE GILBERT RAMOS

Funeral services for Jesse Gilbert Ramos, 47, of Palacios, were held March 31, 2007 at The Church of God of Prophecy, 510 4th street, in Palacios. Interment will be at Palacios Cemetary.

Mr. Ramos died March 27, 2007 in Victoria.

He is survived by his parents, Josephine Rosas and Edward Ramos Sr.; sisters, Diana Gayton, Cathy Garcia, Sarah Garcia, Vicki Rodriguez, and Terri Gonzalez; and brother, Edward Ramos Jr.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Larry Ramos.

Pallbearers were Victor Chavez, David Brandstand, David Gonzalez, Michael Roy, Raymindo Garcia, and Carlos Diaz.

HARDY ROSS

Hardy Ross, pioneer in the petrochemical industry, was born May 6, 1926 to J. Hardy Ross and Minnie Lee Jones Ross in Teague, Texas. After a full life of 80 years, Hardy died peacefully on March 24, 2007.

He is survived by his wife Nita; his daughter Karen and husband, Dr. John D. Oswalt of Austin, Texas; his son George Hardy and wife Karen Schramek Ross of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Sara Oswalt Leete, Claire Oswalt, Matthew Ross, and Chris Ross; his brother, Reverend Gilbert Ross and wife, Carolyn of Dublin, Texas; sister-in-law and her husband Georgene and Dr. Thomas Brandon; and nephews Steven and Ross Brandon.

Hardy grew up on his grandfather’s farm in Palacios, Texas. He attended Palacios High School where he graduated valedictorian of his class. He then entered Texas A&M; University, where his studies were interrupted by World War II. Hardy was a Merchant Marine officer on a tanker in the South Pacific when Hiroshima was bombed in 1945.

After completing his war service in the Army, Hardy returned to his studies in the School of Engineering at A&M;, ultimately landing a chemical engineering position with DuPont in Orange, Texas. There he helped research and develop new uses for polyethylene plastics. He continued his work with Dow Chemical Company and later became vice-president of Cities Service Company’s petrochemical division. Hardy retired in 1982. However, his reputation marked him as a capable consultant in the U.S. and Japan.

Retirement also brought the opportunity to design and construct Hardy’s own home in Chappell Hill. Later, he found great satisfaction in learning the craft of stained glass, providing art glass to many landmarks and residences in the area.

Throughout his life, Hardy was an outdoorsman. He was an avid fisherman and golfer as well as an accomplished photographer. As an engineer and artisan, Hardy was a creator, always constructing something new and beautiful for his family, friends, and community.

Private services were held on March 27, 2007 for Hardy’s family and close friends.

ETHEL ANN ALLEN GUYNES

Graveside funeral services for Ethel Ann Allen Guynes, 73, of Alvin, Tx. were held March 17, 2007 at the Palacios cemetery with Rev. Andy Blair officiating.

Mrs. Guynes was born Sept. 12, 1933 in Palacios, Tx. to the late Thelbert Allen and Bertha Green Allen. She died March 15, 2007 in Webster, Tx.

She was a resident of Alvin for the past three years and a former Matagorda County resident of the Palacios, Blessing, and Carancahua Bay areas. Ethel was a homemaker and enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, and painting.

She is survived by her husband, George Guynes of Alvin; daughters and sons-in-law Debra K. and Chris Grilli of Hempstead, Sherry L. and Maxwell Meador of League City and Karen R. and Terry Welker of Alvin; son and daughter-in-law Michael R. and Cherie Guynes of Alvin; sister and brother-in-law Peggy and Ray Michalik of Brazoria; and grandchildren Wade L. Jones; Aaron Connell, Michelle Welker, Christopher Welker, and Courtney Guynes.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Joe Edward Allen.

RUFUS ELDON ADAMS

A graveside service with full military honors for Rufus Eldon Adams, 85, of Palacios, was held March 16, 2007 at Kosse City cemetery in Kosse, Tx. with Rev. Tom Vance officiating.

Mr. Adams was born Nov. 26, 1921 in Kosse, Tx. to the late Jesse Jerome and Hattie Ford Allen Adams. He died March 13, 2007.

He served in the U.S. Army from November 1942 through March 1946. His combat troop “T” Force, 6th Army Group received commendation for their performance as an intelligence assault force in Alsace and in Germany during World War II. His troop was responsible for retrieving stolen artwork that Herrman Goering had hidden in a cave in Berchtesgaden in 1945.

He married “his girl” Bennye Dean Humphres on Sept 21, 1946. Rufus loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed working outdoors, golfing, camping, water skiing, and racing boats. He was retired from the Palacios ISD where he had worked as the transportation director. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Bennye Adams of Palacios; daughter, Carol Spree of Victoria; son, Jim Alan Adams of Richmond; two sisters, Janie Humphrey of Kosse and Betty Ruth Robbins of Marlin; brother, Jimmy Adams of Pasadena; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lytle Adams, and a brother, Howard Adams.

AURORA GARCIA ROCHA

Funeral services for Aurora Garcia Rocha, 91, of Palacios, were held March 14, 2007 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios with Father Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Ganado cemetery.

Mrs. Rocha was born Aug. 24, 1915 in Ganado to the late Jesus and Guadalupe Garcia. She died March 9, 2007.

She was a Catholic, she was a homemaker and owned her own home.

She is survived by two sons, Alfred “Chato” Garcia Rocha and Jesse “Chato” Rocha, both of Palacios.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Felipe Rocha; one sister, Adela Garcia Villanueva; and six brothers, David Garcia, Abel Garcia, Ruben Garcia, Richard Garcia, Frank Garcia and Daniel Garcia.

Pallbearers were Alfred Garcia Rocha, Jesse Garcia Rocha, Guadalupe Garcia, David Torres, John Rodriguez and Adam Rodriguez.
