AGNES HOLMES BARKER

Graveside services for Agnes Holmes Barker, 91, of Austin, Tx., were held July 20, 2012 at Live Oak cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at Manchaca United Methodist Church.

Agnes was born in Palacios, Tx. to Burrel and Frances Holmes. She passed away July 17, 2012.

She was one of the five “Beautiful Holmes Girls.”

Agnes moved to Austin where she met and married ND Barker. She later joined Capital National Bank where she became the first female Vice President. Upon retirement, Agnes and ND moved to Florence, Tx. and enjoyed ranching.

Agnes is survived by her daughter “Kiki” Dian Warden and husband Jerry; grandchildren, Julie Franki, Mark Warden, and Kimberly Stein; three great-grandchildren, Peter William Stein, III, Elizabeth Anne Stein and Sophia Marie Franki.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, Texas 75265.

JOAN LUCILLE HOLMES CREWS

Funeral services for Joan Lucille Holmes Crews, 91, were held July 19, 2012 in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel in Austin, Tx. with Pastor Dan Toepperwein officiating. Interment was at Forest Oaks Memorial Park.

Mrs. Crews was born Jan. 8, 1923 in Palacios, Tx. She passed away July 15, 2012 in Austin. She was a descendent of one of the original 300 families that settled Texas with Stephen F. Austin.

Joan will be remembered for her adventurous spirit. She joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served her country proudly as an aviation metal smith welding on airplanes that were damaged during WWII. She then went on to travel with Jim and her family during his 28 year Army career. She was an avid seamstress, oil painter, homemaker and general jack of all trades. She left her children and grand children a great legacy of her “can-do” attitude.

She is survived by her son, Darius James Crews, II and his wife Carolyn; daughters Janet Pyle and Gina Sheftall and husband Dell; grandsons Travis Crews and his wife Jarrott, Tyler Crews, Todd Crews, Jason Pyle and his wife Shanna; great-granddaughter Brooklyn Pyle; brother-in-law Albert Johs; and several nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Darius James (Jim) Crews (Major, US Army, Ret); and sister, Margaret Johnson, Leanora Young and Elizabeth Johs. Her remaining sister, Agnes Barker passed away two days after Joan.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

JOYCE DAVIS CARR

Graveside services for Joyce Davis Carr, 85, were held July 11, 2012 at Cedarvale cemetery.

Joyce was born Jan. 1, 1927 in Luling, Tx. to the late E.C. “Buck” and Myrtle Sanders Davis. She left her mortal family to be with her eternal family on July 8, 2012.

She was a devoted school teacher, who liked to live her life near and on the water.

She is survived by grandchildren Christopher Adam Carr of Midway, Tx., Sarah Schaefer and husband PFC Gregory T. Schaefer of Fort Carson, Colorado; great-grandchildren Isabelle and Chelsie Schaefer; sister Dorothy Davis Birkner of Bay City; and other loving family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Thomas “Toney” Carr; and son Christopher Scott Carr.

Arrangements are with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

PATSY (Pat) JEWEL RICHARDS

Funeral services for Mrs. Patsy (Pat) Jewel Richards, 86, of El Campo, Tx., were held July 10, 2012 at First Baptist Church in El Campo with Reverend Rick Dubroc officiating. Private interment followed the services.

Mrs. Richards was born in Palestine, Tx. on Sept. 7, 1925 to the late Howard Claybourn and Judy Boyd-Claybourn. She entered heaven’s gates Friday morning, July 6, 2012.

After her family moved to Palacios, Tx., she graduated from Palacios High School in 1943, and shortly after, met her husband of 67 years, Joe E. Richards, also a Palacios High School graduate. Joe and Pat met when he returned from Los Angeles, California, to visit his family before entering Flight Instructor School at Randolph Field in San Antonio at the onset of World War II. They were married on Sept. 11, 1944, at the First Baptist Church of El Campo and moved to Alabama during World War II.

When the war ended, they moved to Wharton and opened a laundry and dry cleaning business they operated together for five years, until they purchased Pat’s father’s business in El Campo, Sunshine Laundry and Dry Cleaners. Pat and Joe operated the business for 65 years. In addition to helping her husband own and operate a business, Pat was a journalist, editor, and also had a radio program three days a week.

As a journalist, Pat wrote women’s news in El Campo for the El Campo News, The Citizen, and the El Campo Leader-News. Her columns “News” and “About Town” focused on women’s interests and social happenings. Her radio program aired on Radio Station KULP three days a week.

Pat was an active member in philanthropic and social clubs including: an afternoon bridge club, The Garden Club, a dedicated member of First Baptist Church, a couple’s club, the PTA, Beta Sigma Phi, and organized the Sesame Club with Mrs. Farley Sanford.

An energetic and passionate woman, Pat loved and relished her time with her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and employees. Her sister, Betty Welch, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband Joe Edward Richards of El Campo; children, Sherilyn Perilloux and husband Tom of El Campo, Joe H. Richards and wife, Veronica of El Campo; grandchildren Tom Perilloux and wife Lisa of El Campo, Tia Thompson and her husband, Jason of Austin, Patricia “Trish” Portella-Wright and husband Bob Wright of Solana Beach, CA, Chad Richards and wife Kim of Katy, Tx.; and great-grandchildren, Celeste Portella, Colin and Charlie Thompson, and Lucas Richards.

Special thanks to all the caregivers who loved and cared for Pat. She loved each and every one of you.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elk’s Lodge or to First Baptist Church of El Campo.

MAUDELL GILLETTE HIDY

Funeral services for Maudell Gillett Hidy, 87, were held July 8, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Palacios with Rev. Chris Webb officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.

Maudell was born Sept. 9, 1924 in Orangefield, Tx. to the late Emanuel and Palmy Broussard Gillett. She went to be with her Lord, dying peacefully at home July 5, 2012

Maudell enjoyed duck hunting and finding native American arrowheads. She traveled all over the world taking cruises and playing golf. Maudell started playing the piano at church and social functions from a very early age.

She worked at Camp Hulen during WWll with her father. She was one of the original pink ladies at Wagner General Hospital. During the 1960’s she worked at the First Baptist Church in Palacios as Nursery Director and Church Secretary. She also helped her husband Buster on the operation of Gillett Net Shop. She was a beloved wife and caregiver to her husbands. She was a member of the Grace Fellowship Church at Fair Oaks Ranch, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Palacios for 40 years.

She is survived by her children, Stanley Gillett of Boerne, Tx. and Edward Gillett of Palacios, Tx.; sisters Leta Bristol of Renton, Washington, Lois Gilliam of Centerville, Tx., Pam Connis of Palacios, Tx.; Morgan Gillett & wife Valerie of Palacios, Mandalyn Felix & husband Mike of Damon, Tx., Meagan Gillett of Pearland, Tx., Maslin Campbell & husband Mike of Alexandria, Louisiana, Stacie Gillett of San Antonio, Tx., Jana Bayless & husband Kevin of Kaiserslautern, Germany, Jack Gillett of Houston, James Gillett of Baytown, Halie Gillett of The Woodlands, Barbara Gillett of Boerne, Tx; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in Palacios area.

She was preceded in death, son Jack Lee Gillett; sisters, Evelyn Blanchard, Lara Sinclair Eisman; husbands James Barbour “Buster” Gillett, Retired Col. USAF, Charles B. “Chuck” Rummel, and James O. “Jim” Hidy.

Pallbearers were Wayne Hunter, Dolan Dixon, Stuart Gillett, David Gillett, David Gillett, Jr., and Morgan Gillett.

JAMES ROBERT GWIN

Funeral services for Rev. James Robert Gwin, 85, were held July 3, 2012 at Sugar Creek Baptist Church Chapel in Sugar Land, TX, with his final resting place at Hawley cemetery, in Blessing, TX where he will be placed next to his daughter, Janice. Lifelong friend, Brother Tom Hebert officiated.

There will also be a community Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14 at Liberty Hill Baptist Church, San Augustine, Tx., and a Special Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m. July 15 at his present pastorate, Camp Springs Baptist Church, Hemphill, TX.

Rev. Gwin was born Dec 20, 1926 in Mobile, Alabama, to Robert and Ruth Quinnelly Gwin. He went home to be with his Lord on June 28, 2012, after a short illness in Lufkin, TX.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ethel Keith Gwin of San Augustine, TX; daughters, Joyce Lee of Spring, TX, Jill Sheppard and her husband Stan, and Jenta Frick and her husband Randy, both of Sugar Land, TX; and brother, Bobby Gwin and his wife Sara of Mobile, AL. He was Papaw to 7 grandchildren – Spencer, Shelby and Shane Rose, Janice Sheppard, Dakota Medley, and Kelsen and Trace Frick. Bob loved his wife’s family from Mississippi as his own. There has always been a special bond of love with them. This family includes survivors Joyce Wright and her husband Carl of Bentonia, MS; Faye Keith of Hollandale, MS; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Quinnelly Gwin; and daughter, Janice Ruth Gwin.

Bob grew up in Appalachicola, Florida, where he graduated high school. He then became a proud member of the United States Navy and a World War II veteran. Bob loved his country. Upon honorable discharge, he graduated from Mississippi College with a B.A. in Bible. He then attended and graduated from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX, with a Master’s Degree in Theology. Bob then began his 62 years of Ministry service to the Lord. Every congregation where he served was very special to him, and special relationships were made in Appleby, Nederland, Palacios, and in the East Texas area.

Bob was a former member of the Rotary Club of Texas and a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was always a staunch supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Bob was a member of the Ministerial Alliance organizations in every community where he served.

You could always catch him watching Houston sports or the Fox News channel! He kept up with the Astros, Rockets, Texans, and way back in the Luv Ya Blue Houston Oiler days. He had a passion for reading, mechanics, and working with his hands. He was always thinking about what he could make next. Bob loved keeping up with his grandchildren’s activities in school and sports. When he could, he would attend their softball, soccer, and baseball games. Recently he enjoyed watching the Kempner Cougar baseball team in their quest for the state tournament. Bob loved his family so much, every congregation where he served, and All people. He never knew a stranger and always reached out to people in the community wherever he was. Bob always had a smile on his face and a kind heart of compassion ready to serve.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society in his honor.

Special thanks to Dr. Oglesby in San Augustine for taking such good care of him over the years. Thank you also to the congregation of Camp Springs Baptist Church, and to everyone who prayed, sent cards/messages, and loved Bro. Bob.

ANGIE GARZA SAMORA

Funeral Mass for Angie Garza Samora, 76, of Palacios, Tx., were held June 27, 2012 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Palacios with Fr. Bryan Heyer officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery.

Mrs. Samora was born Jan. 14, 1936 in Charco to the late Andres and Maria Garza. She passed away June 23, 2012. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Pete Samora Jr. of Palacios; daughters Bonnie Navarro of Mineral Wells, Tx., and Vilda Morin, Cindy Samora Lopez, Sandra Samora, and Candy Samora Luna all of Palacios; son Randy Samora of Houston; sisters Genoveva Estrello of Palacios, and Rebecca Garza, Lucy Sanchez and Teresa Avalos all of Houston; brothers Andres Garza of Mathis, Tx. and Albert Garza of Sugar Land, Tx.; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Yolanda Rodriguez, Rosalie Garza and Evangelina Garcia; and brother Cesario Garza.

Pallbearers were Darryl Gallardo, J. R. Navarro, Markus Llanes, Nicholas Llanes, Jarred Roy, Darren Samora, Pete Villarreal and Ezequiel Lopez.
