HAROLD BAXTER PENNINGTON

Harold Baxter Pennington, 62, of Houston, Texas, passed away Wednesday April 7, 2004. Harold was born in Houston, Texas, on September 4, 1941, and raised in Palacios, Texas, graduating from Palacios High School in 1959. Some of his fondest memories were of his childhood in Palacios, and he valued the many lifetime friendships he made there. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Maurice and Meta (Baxter) Pennington, who were born and raised in Matagorda, Texas, and Palacios, Texas, respectively. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, ViVi (Schmidt), his son, Jay Scott of New Orleans, Louisiana, his brother, John Edward Pennington and his wife, Mary B. of Houston, Texas, three sister-in-laws, Leonora Kuhn, Jackie Ball and her husband, Bruce, and Margaret Taylor all of Kingsbury, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. While attending the University of Houston, he began his career with Columbia Gulf Transmission Company, a major natural gas pipeline company serving New York and the East Coast headquartered in Houston, from which he retired as the Manager of Ad Valorem Taxes in 1994 after 28 years of service. He was a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers. After his retirement, he served on the Harris County Appraisal Review Board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge AFAM No. 990 of Palacios, and the First United Methodist Church of Palacios. He was very proud of the fact that the Church was organized in 1903 by his grandparents, David Ross and Carrie Isabel (Spoor) Baxter, and the first services were held in their home. Harold was an avid sportsman. He was an accomplished golfer with very low handicap. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. After his retirement, he became interested in his family's genealogy and spent many enjoyable hours tracing the Pennington family history back to 747 A.D. and the Emperor Charlemagne. He traced the Baxter family history back to Benjamin Wightman, his 3rd great-grandfather who was a fourth generation American born in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1755, who fought in the American Revolution with the Tryon County Rangers of New York and came to Texas in 1829 with his son, Elias, who surveyed the County of Matagorda for Stephen F. Austin, and was one of "Austin's Old Three Hundred". Elias received a grant of one league of land from Mexico in 1827 to establish the town of Matagorda at the mouth of the Colorado River. A funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Rick Smith at the Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, April 10, 2004. Interment with the Rev. Tom Bruns officiating will be conducted at the Schmidt family cemetery plot in Kingsbury, Texas, on Saturday, April 17, 2004.

LEWIS A. JENSEN

Private services for Lewis A. Jensen of San Marcos will be held at a later date. He died April 10, 2004 at Hays Nursing Center in San Marcos, TX. Mr. Jensen was born May 2, 1926 in Mankato, MN to Lewis M. Jensen and Hazel Amy Goff. He served in the Navy and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. Lewis was a machinist by trade and was employed by Stratoflex in Fort Worth, TX. He retired in 1988 and moved to Palacios, moving to San Marcos in 1992. He loved to fish spending numerous hours on the Texas Gulf coast and at Bayside RV Park. An avid domino player, Lewie had a large circle of friends in Palacios and at Sunrise Village in San Marcos and was well liked wherever he went. Mr. Jensen was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Chris Jensen and his loving friend, Jean Wickham. He is survived by one son, Martin Jensen of Texas; two sisters, Cheryl Edwards and Darlene Sabo of Minnesota; one brother and sister-in-law Ervin and Carmen Jensen of California and Denise and Diana Steinhagen whom he considered as daughters; several nieces and nephews; and numerous other relatives and close friends. Services handled by All Faiths Funeral Services in Austin.

CAROLYN SUNSHINE (BARNETT) EDWARDS

Funeral services for Carolyn Sunshine Edwards, 81, of Palacios, were held March 29, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church with Revs. Andy and Janell Blair officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Edwards was born April 20, 1922 in Palacios to the late John Franklin and Grace L. Menefee Barnett. She died March 24, 2004. Mrs. Edwards received her secondary education at Mary Harden Baylor College and returned to Palacios to teach the children that she loved so much. She retired after teaching in Palacios for 31 years, with a short break teaching in Vanderbilt several years. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Evelyn Edwards of Palacios; a son, Michael E. Edwards of Palacios; daughter-in-law Beverly Edwards; and a granddaughter, Dawn Edwards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Eugene Edwards; a sister, Grace Evelyn Ferguson; brothers John F. Barnett Jr. and Price Menefee Barnett; and one grandson., Damon Lee Edwards. Arrangements were with Artero Memorial Chapels of Port Lavaca.

JOE REYES, JR.

Funeral services for Joe Reyes, Jr., 55, of Houston and formerly of Blessing, were held March 29, 2004 at St. Robert's Catholic Church in El Campo with Rev. Lawrence Matula officiating. Interment was at Holy Cross Memorial Park in El Campo. Mr. Reyes was born June 18, 1948 in Matagorda County to Joe Reyes, Sr. of Houston and the late Frances Salinas Reyes. He died March 27, 2004. He was employed by Houston ISD at Greg Elementary as a special education teacher. He was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 2003 by Houston ISD. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Brazoria, a Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus, the Guadalupenas, and a former sponsor of the Key Club at Brazosport High School. He is survived by his father; his wife, Rosa Solis Reyes; daughters Frances Reyes-Matula of Lake Jackson, Katherine Reyes and Rosa Reyes both of Houston; sons Roland Reyes of Austin and Jose Reyes of Houston; sisters Lorena Villarreal of Wharton, Linda Cruz of Austin and Deborah Tovar of Blessing; brothers Ernest Reyes of Blessing and Leon Reyes of Bay City; and four grandchildren. Arrangements were with Triska Funeral Home, El Campo.

JACQUE L. MOORE

Funeral services for Jacque L. Moore, 75, of Palacios, were held March 24, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Palacios. Interment was at Hawley cemetery in Blessing. Family and friends will served as pallbearers. Mrs. Moore was born March 5, 1929 in Joplin, Missouri to Jack Hardy and Addie Mae Bigley Hardy. She died March 20, 2004 at her residence. A resident of Palacios since 1965, she had worked as Librarian for the Palacios Public Library for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3821, Friends of the Elderly, and the Palacios Area Historical Association (Musuem). She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Joseph Kalas of Bay City; son and daughter-in-law, Davie E. and Kathy Moore of Palacios; two sisters, Mary Grayson of Longdale, Okla. and Jayne Flesher of Webb City, Mo.; brother, Tom Lundstrum of Springdale, Ark.; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David E. Moore; son, Sandy Sam Moore; and 11 brothers and sisters. Memorials may be made to El Campo Hospice, Senior Citizens Center in Palacios, Texas Library Association, Houston Library Association, or the University of Houston Alumni Association. Arrangements are with Palacios Funeral Home in Palacios.

ELIAS S. DIAZ

Funeral services for Elias S. Diaz, 58, of Palacios, were held March 13, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Samuel Puccio officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Diaz was born Aug. 17, 1945 in Palacios to the late Manuel Diaz and Estefana Sanchez. He died March 9, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital in Houston. A lifelong resident of Palacios, he was a Presbyterian and retired from Alcoa Aluminum in 2001 after 28 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Mary Diaz, of Palacios; son and daughter-in-law Elias Carlos and Bridgette Diaz of Palacios; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra and Joseph Garcia of Palacios, Virginia and Michael Benavides of Victoria, and Myra and Marcus Sanchez of Port Lavaca; a brother, Guadalupe Diaz of Chicago, IL; and 16 grandchildrenÑCarlos, Eric, A. J., Christen, David, Natalie, Stacy, Alysia, Gabrille, Joseph, Mariah, Justin, Felipe, Alexis, Adriana and Ariel. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Hernandez and Anita Hernandez; and a brother, Daniel Hernandez, Sr. Pallbearers were Roy Villarreal, Valentin Perez, Michael Rodriguez, Andrew Sanchez Jr., Sam Luna and Sam Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers were Gilbert Sanchez Sr., Andrew Sanchez Sr. and Alec Garrison. Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home. (Submitted March 25)

DAVID NELSON DAY

Funeral services for David Nelson Day, 77, of Bay City, were held March 19, 2004 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home in Bay City. Interment was at Hawley cemetery. Mr. Nelson wasborn September 28, 1926 in Bay City to the late Ed and Sophie Marie Schmidt Day. He died March 16, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for A. M. Ussery in Blessing, and a former longtime resident of Blessing. He had lived in Kerrville, Tx. for the last three years, most of that time living with his sister, Edna Mikus. On February 25, 2004 he moved to the Legacy in Bay City. Six days later he was hospitalized in Bay City for 2 days and was then transferred to the Methodist Hospital in Houston. He is survived by a brother, Henry Richard Day and wife Elaine of Blessing; sister-in-law: Elizabeth Fern Day of Deutschburg Community; nieces Sheryl Jeffery of Kerrville, Sophie Gates of Memphis, TN, Lisa Day Remmy of Blessing, and Geneva Day Socha of Deutschburg; nephews Tommy and Walter Day of Blessing, Richard Earl Day of Hugo, OK, and Charles Mikus of Yorktown; great nephews Ed Mikus of the US Army, and Michael Jeffery of Kerrville; great nieces Shannon Walter of LA, Kathy Socha of Deutschburg, Alicia Hart and Charlotte Mikus of Yorktown; great-great nephews Alex and Lewis Walter of Louisiana and Jason Hart, Jr of Yorktown, and a great-great niece Danielle Walter of Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Day, and his sister, Edna Louise Day Mikus. Pallbearers were Abner Ussery, Delvin Taska, Lee Hall Pierce, Joe Johs, Jr., Kenneth Johs, and Russell Bloom. Arrangements were with Taylor Bros. Funeral Home.

BLOSSOM EDWINA LIMAHAI SONNIER-ROHUS "LOVINA"

A small memorial service for Blossom Edwina Limahai, Sonnier-Rohus "Lovina", 58, of Bowie, Tx. was held March 17, 2004 in Palacios. Mrs. Sonnier-Rohus was born February 8, 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii and passed away March 7, 2004 in Bowie, Tx. She is survived by her husband Lloyd Rohus of Bowie, Tx; Donald Sonnier of Palacios; Ben Limahai, Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii and Mary Sonnier of Crowley, Louisiana; children Benedict Limahai of Honolulu, Hawaii and Ina Sonnier and Donald Sonnier, Jr., both of Palacios; grandchildren Jessica, Stephanie, Stacie, Ryan, Gerry, Jr., Garon, Micheal, Jennifer, Tyler and Layla, all of Palacios. She is preceded in death by her father, Ben Limahai; step-mother Eleanor Limahai; sisters Barbara L. Raines and Ann L. Baker; father-in-law Wilson Sonnier; and grandparents Felix and Elta Hanks.

EDWARD RAY SIMPSON

A memorial service for Edward Ray Simpson, 90, of Palacios, was held March 12, 2004 at the Palacios Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Wells officiating. Mr. Simpson was born Dec. 5, 1913 in Palacios to John Daniels and Edna Texas Crane Simpson. He died March 8, 2004 at the Palacios Healthcare Center. He was a 30 year resident of Palacios, a life member of VFW Post 14000, Disabled American Veterans, and Palacios Masonic Lodge 990 AF & AM. He is survived by his sister, Edna Ethel Looney of Palacios, nieces Elizabeth and husband, Don Owen, of Sugar Land, Tx., and Jeanie and husband Ken Smith, of Bosie, ID; great-nephew David Owen of Sugar Land, great-nieces Sarah Owen of Sugar Land, and Alex Smith of Bosie, ID; and long time friends Doug and Helen Callais of Palacios. Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by his parents and brothers John Price, William Howard, Clifford Preston and Robert Kenneth Simpson. Arrangements are with Palacios Funeral Home (361) 972-2012.

FREDERICK DAYLE COX, SR.

Funeral services for Frederick Dayle Cox, Sr, 84, of Stephenville, Tx., was held March 11, 2004 at Sheffield Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ann Hitt officiating. Interment was at Bellwood Memorial Park cemetery. Mr. Cox was born March 15, 1919 in Beverly Kansas. He died March 8, 2004. A graduate of Palacios High School, he was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII, and retired from civil service at the V. A. Hospital in Temple. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Temple. He is survived by a son, Frederick Dayle Cox, Jr. of Stephenville; a daughter, Cherie Irene Wallace of Belton, Tx.; brothers Kenneth James Cox of Lakewood, Col., and John Cox of Donna, Tx.; sisters Beverly Cox Neubert of Lakeland, Col., and Bobbie Cox Jewell of Arvada, Col.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie Cox, on Dec. 21, 2002.
