Paul Cumbie
1927-2003
ASPERMONT -- Paul Cumbie, a native of Clairemont, died Sunday, March 23, in a Big Spring medical facility.
Service for Mr. Cumbie, 79, is set for 3 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Double Mountain Cemetery. The Revs. William McCall and Jason Coveington will officiate. Services are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Born on Jan. 26, 1927 in Clairemont, he married Joan Wright on Aug. 31, 1946 in Jayton. A farmer and rancher, Mr. Cumbie was a veteran of World War II. He served as sheriff for Andrews County from 1961-1964.
He was preceded in death by his parents, B.A. and Ada Cumbie; one sister, Virginia Paylor; and one brother, R.T. Cumbie.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Cumbie of Granbury; three daughters, Pam Cumbie of Arlington, Diann Borne of Jacksonville, Fla. And Jeffery Ann McClanahan of Granbury; two brothers, B.A. Cumbie of Hamlin and Thomas Cumbie of Sweetwater; two sisters, Elva Rie Stafford of Holdenville, Okla., and JoAnn Gardner of Tahoka; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Greg Porter
1962-2003
BIG SPRING -- Greg Porter, 41, former Snyder resident, died Wednesday, March 19, in Scenic Mountain Medical Center after a sudden illness.
A memorial service is set for 3 p.m. Tuesday in Snyder Cemetery with the Rev. Danny Williams officiating.
A service was held Saturday at Myers and Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Willard of Mt. Bethel Baptist Church officiating.
Born on March 11, 1962 in New Ulm, Minn., he had lived in Snyder and worked for White’s Auto Store. He later moved to Colorado City and then to Big Spring three years ago where he worked for Dave’s Tubing Testing.
Survivors include his wife, Shelia Porter of Big Spring; three sons, twins Micah and Malachi Porter of Tennessee Colony, formerly of Snyder, and Christopher Clark of Big Spring; one daughter, Brandy Clark of Big Spring; his parents, Allen and Lucille Porter of New Ulm, Minn.; and one brother, Brad Porter of Rockford Minn.

Leroy Ward
1930-2003
Leroy Martin Ward, 72, died Monday, March 24, in Snyder Oaks Care Center.
Graveside service was held at 10 a.m. today in Hillside Memorial Gardens with Steve Highfield officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Wright Colonial Funeral Home.
Born March 29, 1930. Mr. Ward has no known family members although he is survived by a host of friends and caretakers from Snyder Oaks Care Center.

Katherine Stack
1941-2003
ABILENE -- Katherine Stack, former Snyder resident, died Sunday, March 23.
Service for Mrs. Stack, 61, is set for 10 a.m. Friday at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home Chapel in Walbridge, Ohio. Burial will follow in Lake Township Cemetery. Local arrangements are under the direction of Abilene Funeral Home.
She was born on Aug. 4, 1941 in Montgomery County, Va. She and her husband, Jack A. Stack, lived in Ira for 10 years. She worked as a nurse’s aid for Cogdell Memorial Hospital and also Snyder Oaks Care Center. They lived in Abilene the past 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Jack A. Stack of Abilene; two sons, Jack Stack Jr. of Snyder and James Andrew Stack of Abilene; two granddaughters, Hollie Stack of Nacogdoches and Tiffany Stack of Snyder.

Authula Simpson
1919-2003
LUBBOCK -- Authula Simpson, sister of Donell Kelley of Snyder, died Monday, March 24, in Lubbock.
Service for Mrs. Simpson, 84, is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Quaker Avenue Church of Christ. David Langford will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park.
Born March 14, 1919 in Bell County, she married C.E. “Edd” Simpson on March 6, 1937 in Clovis, N.M. She was a homemaker and had at one time volunteered at Girls Town in Whiteface. She was a member of Quaker Avenue Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by a son, Doug Simpson on June 29, 1998; and three brothers, Swaim, Weldon and Marvin Kelley.
Survivors include her husband, Edd Simpson of Lubbock; a son, Eddie Simpson of Lubbock; a daughter-in-law, Terry Simpson of Lubbock; four sisters, Marie Allison, Dortha Reat, Arjorie Wolfenden and Joyce Pool, all of Lubbock; two other brothers, Pete Kelley of Sealy and Ewell Kelley of Dimmitt; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock, 1102 Slide Road Suite 3, Lubbock, 79416.

Shorty Halford
1935-2003
Weldon “Shorty” Halford of Snyder died Tuesday, March 25, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Graveside service for Mr. Halford, 67, has been set for 10 a.m. Thursday in Snyder Cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry White, minister of Faith Baptist Church, will officiate.
Born Oct. 31, 1935 in Jester, Okla., he married Bennie McFatridge on April 26, 1958 in Snyder. Mr. Halford was owner of Lease Equipment and a member of the Rock Island Masonic Lodge No. 869.
He was preceded in death by one brother, J.W. Halford.
Survivors include his wife, Bennie Halford of Snyder; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Kerry Fritz of Big Spring, Sam and Tracy Dennis of Lubbock and LaDonna Halford and Lonnie Pitts of Big Spring; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and LaDonna Halford of Post; two sisters, Ila Rae Eagan of Lone Grove, Okla., and Edna Gail Pitts and husband Bill of Corn, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Richard Halford and wife Devin of Post, Ricky Halford and wife Keri of Washington, Larissa Halford of Post, Shiloh and Brittany Fritz of Big Spring, Jason and Madison Dennis of Lubbock, Dakota Teaff of Big Spring and Samantha Pitts of Garden City; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 this evening at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Rosalio Gutierrez
1944-2003
Rosalio Gutierrez Sr., 58, died Tuesday, March 25, in Cogdell Memorial Hospital.
Rosary for Mr. Gutierrez is set for 8:15 p.m. Thursday in the Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Frank Ortegon officiating.
Funeral mass is set for 10 a.m. Friday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Leo Moras officiating. Burial will follow in the Snyder Cemetery.
Born Sept. 4, 1944 in Sabinal, he married Rosalinda Olvera on April 8, 1962 in Carrizo Springs.
A mechanic, Mr. Gutierrez was preceded in death by a brother, Hilario Gutierrez; and a sister, Paula Marie Perez.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalinda Gutierrez of Snyder; three sons, Rosalio Gutierrez Jr., Eddie Gutierrez and Joe Angel Gutierrez, all of Snyder; four daughters, Melinda Piru of Austin, Josie Juarez of Calwell, Nancy Gutierrez and Esmeralda Maldonado, both of Snyder; his mother, Lorenza Gutierrez of Snyder; two brothers, Santos Gutierrez of Snyder and Jose Gutierrez of Salem, Ore.; six sisters, Hilaria Gutierrez of Hermleigh, Consuelo Gallegos and Esperanza Renteria, both of Snyder, Lorenza Jimenez of Eagle Pass, Maria Aguilar of Mission and Dolores Gutierrez of Conroe; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Eckert
1932-2003
BIG SPRING -- Dorothy Bernice Eckert, sister-in-law of Juanita Eckert of Snyder, died Monday, March 24, at her home in Big Spring.
Service for Mrs. Eckert, 71, is set for 10 a.m. Friday in Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at the Miles Cemetery in Miles, Tex.
Born Jan. 17, 1932 in Cameron, she married Elmer Eckert on April 8, 1951 in San Angelo. He died April 30, 1988.
Mrs. Eckert had lived in Big Spring since 1974 and had been a caretaker for the elderly. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Carl Elmer Eckert on March 19, 2002.
Survivors also include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Chester Eckert, Steve Eckert and Fred and Becky Eckert, all of Big Spring; a daughter and son-in-law, Dornell and Lanny King of Big Spring; a brother, Mondrow Stork of Rockdale; four sisters, Doris Junek of Graham, Ona Faye Skrhak of Bastrop, Leola Sladek of San Antonio and Florence Downey of Big Spring; a niece, Lujean Eckert of Snyder; two nephews, Gary Eckert and Nelson Eckert, both of Snyder; and seven grandchildren.

Paula Bylsma
1940-2003
SIOUX FALLS, Idaho -- Paula Ann Bylsma, a former resident of Snyder, died Tuesday, March 25, at her home under the care of Avera Mckennan Hospice.
Committal service for Mrs. Bylsma, 62, is set for 11 a.m. Friday in the Woodlawn Cemetery and a memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the First Presbyterian Church.
Born June 11, 1940 in Gorman, she moved with her family to Snyder in 1947 and was a 1958 graduate of Snyder High School. She graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1962 and completed her master of arts degree in history at the University of Iowa in 1963.
She married John Bylsma on Dec. 28, 1963.
Mrs. Bylsma taught English and history for two years in Columbus Junction, Iowa, and social studies and English for eight years at Patrick Henry Junior High in Sioux Falls. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and served on boards and committees. When the church sponsored Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s, Mrs. Bylsma began her involvement with the refugee community in Sioux Falls. She was a volunteer and teacher of English as a second language for Lutheran Social Services.
Mrs. Bylsma also was one of the founders of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls and was active in its growth during its first years of its existence.
Survivors also include her husband, John Bylsma of Sioux Falls; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Engebretson of Fargo, N.D.; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Lisa Bylsma of Ashland, Ore.; her parents, Bob and Henrietta Dupree of Snyder; a sister, Dena Ferrell Bryant of Arlington; and grandchildren, Ariel, Benjamin and Samuel Engebretson, and Noah and Micah Bylsma.
Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church’s Malawi and One Great Hour of Sharing missions or to Habitat for Humanity.
