Fern Gaines
Funeral services were held for Fern Gaines, 76, of Houston, on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Brookside Funeral Home Chapel, Cypress Creek. Fern McFadden was born July 12, 1925, in Clifton, to George and Minnie Lee McFadden. She passed away on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, in Houston. Her spirit of joy and laughter can still be heard in the heart’s of her family and friends and is now lifted to the ears of angels. She was preceded in death by her parents; the father of her children, Emil H. Enger (May 1983); her husband, James Gaines (September 1988); and three brothers, Clyce, Norwood, and Chris McFadden. Survivors include her daughter, Gayle Jones Rosales, and husband, Robert; her son, Bobby Enger and wife, Delma; grandchildren, Kenda Beall, Kendall Crawford, and Kevin Enger; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Texas Texas Medical Center, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston 77030. Interment icon was in Memorial Oaks cemetery under the direction of Brookside Funeral Home.

Roy Bean
Funeral services for Roy Bean, 89, of Clifton, were held Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Clifton, Dr. Jerry Smith officiating. Interment icon followed in Clifton cemetery. Bean died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Bean was born Jan. 20, 1912, in Huntsville. He was one of three children born to Edwin and Eunice Brake Bean. He grew up in the Huntsville area, then his family moved to Bosque County. As a young man he lived in the Norse community, working in farming and construction. He helped build the school and did other WPA projects during the Great Depression. He also worked for Schow Lumber Company and the milling company for a number of years. He married Ruby Barton on Sept. 27, 1938. The young couple made Clifton their home, where he operated a concrete contracting company most of his adult life. Most of the curbs, gutters, sidewalks, cemetery borders, and many foundations were done by Bean and his crew. Bean and his wife Ruby had six children, and they also raised many of their extended family’s nieces, nephews, and other kinfolk. He was preceded in death by his brother, Simon Bean, and a sister, Myrtle Gustafson. Bean is survived by his wife, Ruby Bean; son James Bean; daughter Betty (Ruthie) and husband Wayne Light; son Eddie (Rudy) and wife Rachel Bean; and son Kenneth Bean, all of Clifton; daughter Pat Perkins, of Arlington; stepdaughter Wanda Jean Thomas of Waco; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert William Lammert
Funeral services for Herbert William Lammert, 90, of Old Glory, were held at Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, with interment following in Old Glory cemetery. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home Chapel. Lammert died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, in Clifton. He was born July 28, 1911, in Bosque County. He lived near Old Glory from 1942 to 2001. He was the son of Henry and Martha (Goeke) Lammert. Lammert is survived by his son, Herb and wife Barbara Lammert of Clifton, daughter Gloria and husband Bert Turner of Lubbock, son Danny and wife Helen Lammert of Sagerton, sisters Lillie Aaneson and Clara Albrecht of Clifton, sister Edna Mgebroff of Giddings; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Nell O. Maynard
Nell O. Maynard, 70, of Austin, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001. Funeral services were held at Messiah Lutheran Church Tuesday morning, Nov, 13, 2001, with Pastor Sandi Wilcox officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Hill Park. She was born in Cranfills Gap on Aug. 20, 1931, to Alfred Nelson and Palma Malinda Olson. She married Felix Raymond Maynard on Dec. 26, 1951. She attended Nixon Clay Business College, and went on to become the head cashier for 27 years at The Texas School for the Blind and Deaf. She was an avid member of Messiah Lutheran Church, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Creedmore Chapter #607. Maynard enjoyed cooking, was an avid gardener, an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed making crosses that she gave to people to show her appreciation for their kindness. No two crosses were ever the same, allowing people to choose the one they wanted. She was a very unselfish person putting everyone’s needs before her own. Nell never met a stranger. She was proceeded in death by her sister Maryann Nelson. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Maynard; children, Pamela Hausmann, and Susan Brown and husband Max; grandchildren, Teresa and Malinda Hausmann, and Christopher and Melissa Brown; and brothers, Archie Nelson, Donald Nelson, and Gerald Nelson. She will be remembered by numerous loved ones and friends. The family expressed its thanks to Lone Star Hospice (especially Edith), and for the exemplary care Maynard received from all at North Austin Medical Center. For those desiring, memorial contributions can be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 5701 Cameron Road, Austin, TX 78723. Amey-Rockwood Lane Funeral Home, Austin, was in charge of arrangements.

Viola Schramm
Graveside services were held for Viola Emilie Schramm, 95, of Houston, on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at 1 p.m., at Clifton cemetery, with Martin B. Mueller officiating. Viola Schramm was born on Sept. 3, 1906, to Otto Albert and Emma Lange Schramm, in Burton, Texas. She passed away on Dec. 25, 2001, in Northwest Hospital in Houston. The Schramm family moved to the Clifton area in 1908, and Viola attended school at Womack. She moved to Dallas in 1927, and to Houston in 1934. She worked in sales at the Smart Shop, Phoenix Furniture, and Weingarten’s until she retired. She lived a full and active life and was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Houston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Emma Lange Schramm, and a brother, Herburt (Dick) Schramm. Survivors include a brother, Walter Schramm and wife, Ora Bell; a sister, Leona Whatley; a sister-in-law, Ivy Lee Schramm; three nieces, four great-nephews, and one great-niece. Interment icon was in Clifton cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Lillie Rachel Bonner Stubbs
Funeral services were held for Lillie Rachel Bonner Stubbs, 90, of Gatesville on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of the Gatesville Funeral Home. Lillie Bonner was born on March 7, 1911, on the family farm in the community of Retreat near Corsicana in Navarro County. She was the oldest of five children born to Grennie Leven and Addie Thedochic Cox Bonner. She died on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, in Gatesville. On May 12, 1950, she and James Clifford Stubbs were united in marriage in Corsicana. She lived most of her life in Gatesville. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church. She sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School classes. She had been a member of the Singing Sixties and loved to sing and play the piano. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Stubbs; her parents; three sons, Leo Carroll, Gene Felix, and John Clinton Stubbs; one daughter, Elnora Estelle Stubbs Burns; one brother, Olan Bonner; two sisters, Edna Hedrick and Opal Roberson; and one grandson, Craig Burns. Survivors include one sister, Francis Perry; one brother, Lowell Bonner, both of Corsicana; three sons, E.T. Stubbs and wife, Dorothy of Waco, Charles Stubbs and wife, Gloria of Livingston, James Stubbs and wife, Barbara of West Columbia; two daughters, Betty Haven of Garland, and Sarah Gohlke and husband, Robert, of Jonesboro; 17 grandchildren, Clark Burns, Coby Burns, Terry Taylor, Jeffrey Stubbs, Barry Stubbs, Linda Stubbs, Lori Kramer, Kevin Stubbs, Pamela DeRita, Heidi haven, Rhonda Youngblood, Ryan Stubbs, Melissa Bendele, Stephanie Condojani, Nathan Gohlke, and J.C. Stubbs; and great-grandchildren Emily Herzog, Katlyn Burns, Kelly Burns, Caden Ridley, Colton Ridley, Jessica Taylor, Tyson Taylor, Chris Stubbs, Deanna Stubbs, Dylan Stubbs, Morgan Stubbs, Isabela DeRita, Claire Haven-Leal, Scott Youngblood, Logan Youngblood, Amber Bendele, Colton Bendele, Bailey Gohlke, and Kendra Condojani, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Pallbearers were the grandsons. Interment icon was in Boggy cemetery near Cranfills Gap under the direction of Gatesville Funeral Home.

Jim Leslie Lowrance
Funeral services were held for Jim Leslie Lowrance, 48, of Clifton, on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 10 a.m., at Overby Funeral Home in Kerrville. Lowrance was born on Dec. 16, 1953, in Kerrville. He died on Dec. 25, 2001, due to complications following a lengthy illness. He was born and raised in Kerrville. He married Linda R. Dickey of Lubbock in 1974. After graduating from the Paris Junior College School of Jewelry and Watch Technology in 1977, the couple moved to Clifton in 1979. They opened Clifton Jewelers and continued to operate in downtown Clifton until 1986. From 1986 to 1998, the Lowrances owned and operated Farmer’s State Pawn and Clifton Jewelers. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the great outdoors and life on the Long Shot Ranch in the community of Harmony. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, talent as a jeweler and watchmaker, swapper and trader, and his love of live and his family. He will be remembered as a beloved father, husband, and friend. He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola Peel Earehart, his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Peel, his paternal grandmother Mrs. Tommie Lowrance, and brother-in-law David M. Dickey. Survivors include his wife, Linda R. Lowrance of Clifton; two children, Michelle Lowrance Crawford and Chris Crawford of San Antonio, and Wesley R. Lowrance of Lubbock; his father, James Lowrance of Kerrville; four brothers and one sister, Johnny R. Treadwell of Kerrville, Kenneth Treadwell of Beeville, Keith Treadwell of Leander, and Bonnie Lockridge and James E. Lowrance Jr., both of Kerrville; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Pallbearers include Johnny Treadwell, Gene Wilson, John Lowrance, Tony Harden, Steve Kluting, Ellis Hunter, Aime Real, David Cullison, Jerry Miller, and Robert Barron. Interment icon was in Sunset cemetery at Mountain Home under the direction of Overby Funeral Home in Kerrville. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society in memory of his mother, Viola Earehart.

Clarence E. Bohn
Clarence Edward Bohn, 87, a forensics expert who worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1939 to 1975 and retired as a senior document examiner, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Virginia, following a heart attack. Bohn was a native of Gillett, Wisc., and a 1938 graduate of Michigan State University. He was a 1950 graduate of Georgetown University’s law school. Bohn taught forensic science and document examination at George Washington University from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. He then operated a private forensic-expert consulting business until 1999. During his career, Bohn testified as an expert witness in numerous FBI cases nationwide. Among the most prominent was identification analysis of the diary of Sirhan Sirhan, the killer of Robert F. Kennedy. His memberships included the golf committee at Belle Haven Country Club, and Aldersgate United Methodist Church, both in Alexandria, Va. His marriage to Wilma Bohn ended in divorce. Bohn is survived by his wife, Frances Bakke Bohn, whom he married in 1952 in Alexandria.

Irvin Joel Grimland
Funeral services were held for Irvin Joel Grimland, 79, of Norse, on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at 4 p.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Norse. Irvin Grimland was born on Aug. 21, 1922 at Norse to Oscar and Annie Grimland. He passed away at his home on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. Grimland went to school at Bee Hill, Boggy Creek, and Turkey Creek. He was a life-long member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He was drafted into the Army and fought on Normandy Beach on D-Day. During his military service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, along with several other awards. On June 15, 1947, he married Vernell Johnson. The couple had one daughter, Diane, and one son, Ronnie. Grimland worked for Gearench for 30 years, along with his farming. He loved watching football, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, J.C. and Allen Grimland. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Vernell; daughter, Diane Remington and husband, Danny Sr.; son, Ronnie Grimland; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one brother, Milton and wife, Elizabeth; and one sister-in-law, Janelle Grimland. Memorials may be made to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church or Prividence Hospice of the Heart. Interment icon was in Norse cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
