John W. Keltner
Gravesite services were held for John W. Keltner, 82, of Valley Mills, on Friday, July 26, 2002, at the Eagle Springs cemetery near McGregor with Dr. John Hogan and Rev. Ed Brentham officiating. Keltner was born December 27, 1919, in Speegleville. He passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2002, in a Temple hospital. Keltner was a World War II Army Veteran, receiving a Purple Heart. He was in Normandy, Northern France, Ardenne, Central Europe, Rhineland, Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, and Tunisia. Keltner married Mary French in August of 1979 in Osage, and was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church of Moody, Texas. Survivors include his wife, Mary Keltner of Valley Mills; two sons, Richard Dwayne Keltner of Georgia and David Keltner of Waco; one daughter, Gwendolyn Kitchens of Moody; one sister, Dee Fletcher of McGregor; and 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Arrangements were made by Foss Funeral Home.

Otis Miles
Funeral services will be held for Otis Miles, 96, of Mosheim, on Sunday, July 28, 2002, at 2 p.m., in Mosheim Baptist Church with Doris Stevens officiating. Otis Miles was born on Dec. 10, 1905, in Coryell County, to Arthur and May Blankenship Miles. He passed away in Athens, Texas, on Thursday, July 25, 2002. On July 8, 1939, he married Louise Garren. He lived in the Mosheim community for 93 years until after his wife’s death in March 1999, when he moved to Athens to be near his daughter and her family. He worked at farming and ranching all his life. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, and cattle. He was a member of the Mosheim Baptist Church. He will be remembered for loving his family, along with all other people. He was friendly and generous. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Garren Miles; and two brothers, Monroe and Charley Miles. Survivors include a daughter, Ann Spitzer of Athens; a son, Larry Miles of Mosheim; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister Grace Wilson of Spur, Texas. Pallbearers will include grandsons, Steve Spitzer, Stuart Spitzer, Wesley Miles, Jeffrey Miles, Seth Miles, and grandson-in-law, Rob Risko. Interment icon will be in Turnersville cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

John Hamer
Graveside funeral services for John Hamer, 82, of Whitney, were held Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Whitney Memorial Park, the Rev. Terry Gayle officiating. Hamer died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, in Clifton. Hamer was born June 19, 1920, in Meadville, Neb., the son of Charles and Nola (Betts) Hamer. He married Ella Melinda Hatfield on Jan. 3, 1939, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 2001. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class with G Company, 184th Infantry, 7th Division, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He participated in the Okinawa Campaign, as well as in Korea. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with one bronze star, the WWII Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Overseas Service Bar. Hamer moved to the Dallas area in 1961, then moved to Whitney in 1985 when he retired. He is survived by his sons, John Jr. and wife Martha Hamer of Gun Barrel City, Richard Louis and wife Debbie Hamer of Clifton, and Dale Allen Hamer of Huntsville; brother Everett Hamer of California; sister Mary Hamer of Alabama; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors, Whitney, was in charge of arrangements.

James Madison Scheuber, Jr.
Funeral services for James Madison Scheuber, Jr., 81, of Clifton, were held Monday, July 15, 2002, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home Chapel, Chaplain Pat Dietrich officiating. Interment icon followed at Clifton Memorial Park. Scheuber died Friday, July 12, 2002. He was born in Eastland in 1921, to James Madison, Sr. and Ruth Amelia Pearson Scheuber. He served his country in Europe during Word War II. During the Korean Conflict, he trained troops in Colorado. Scheuber worked extensively throughout the United States as a construction engineer, then worked for 35 years designing bakeries, building some of the largest bakeries in the world. Jim and his wife, Jan Scheuber, retired and moved to Clifton in 1984, where he could enjoy his workshop, his dogs, and his camper. The couple traveled throughout much of the United States, pulling their beloved camper-trailer. His is survived by his wife, Janice Scheuber of Clifton; a son, James M. Scheuber III of Seattle; a daughter, Tomi Jensen of Denver; a sister, Virginia and husband Winton Studt of Longview; daughter-in-law Sherry Scheuber of El Dorado, Kan.; three grandchildren, Cory Ceh, Chris Scheuber, and Ryan Scheuber; three great-grandchildren, Mia Schulze, Eva Ceh, and Brycen Wade Scheuber; and a very special friend, Albert Bunnell. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

David E. Smith
Funeral services were held for David E. Smith, 90, of Meridian, on Sunday, July 14, 2002, in the Meridian Church of Christ with Carlon Lemons and Gary Phillips officiating. Smith was born on Nov. 30, 1911, in Dalby Springs, Bowie County, Texas. He was the son of the late John W. and Mary McMillan Smith. He passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2002, in the Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. He had lived in Oklahoma and later in West Texas and Bowie County in his younger days, where he worked on farms and ranches. On Jan. 11, 1931, he was united in marriage to Gladys M. Cockrell at Knott, Texas. He farmed for several years in West Texas before purchasing a farm just south of Meridian in 1947. In addition to his farming operation, he also worked as a service station operator, county road maintenance, and a carpenter, to supplement his income to care for his family and give his children a good education. For many years, he was an active member of the Meridian Church of Christ and was one of the several that helped construct the present facility. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; a son, Wendell Dean Smith; and a daughter, Betty Lou Smith. Survivors include three sons, David L. Smith and wife, Pauline, of Lubbock, Robert L. Smith and wife, Gailya, of Stinnett, and Dale Smith and wife, Faye, of Abilene; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Bonnie Reed of DeKalb; a brother, Bill Smith of Dallas; a special friend, Faye Chamber of Meridian; and a number of nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and a host of friends. Pallbearers were Daniel Phillips, Charles Howard, George C. Phillips, Ronnie Baker, Smokey Jorgenson, Mike St. Clair, and Ike Williams. Interment icon was in Meridian cemetery under the direction of Lawson Funeral Home of Meridian.

Frances Bakke Bohn
Funeral services were held for Frances Bakke Bohn, 88, of Alexandria, Va., on Saturday, July 13, at 10 a.m., at Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria, Va., and on Monday, July 15, 2002, at 2 p.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church cemetery at Norse. Frances Bakke was born on Sept. 15, 1914, in the Turkey Creek community of Bosque County. She passed away on July 10, 2002. She was the fourth child of eight born to Ole and Cora Bronstad Bakke. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Norse. She attended Turkey Creek School and Clifton Academy. After graduating, she owned and operated a beauty shop for several years. In the early 1940s, she began her employment in Washington, D.C. with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which she continued for many years. On Jan. 5, 1952, she married Clarence E. (Joe) Bohn. They made their home in Alexandria, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband who passed away in January 2002; her parents, Ole and Cora Bakke; brothers Curtis and Mervin Bakke; and sisters, Mayme Knudson, Faye Schurman, and Corinne Sander. Survivors include a sister, Gladys Johnson of Waco; brother Olee Bakke of Clifton; and five nieces and seven nephews. Pallbearers were Clinton Bakke, Ed Bell, Robert Schurman, Charles Johnson, Richard Bakke, and Kenneth Bakke. Interment icon was at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Martha Eloise Borom
Funeral services were held for Martha Eloise Borom on July 19, 2002, at 2:30 p.m., at The First United Methodist Church in Cranfills Gap, Texas. The church pastor, Wayne Lewis, officiated. Burial was in Boggy cemetery. Borom died on July 16, 2002, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton, Texas, following a short illness. Born on Dec. 8, 1919, to Jesse and Mattie Martin of Luverne, Alabama, Eloise lived in Alabama as a young girl, graduated from Luverne High School, Luverne, Alabama, and married Gerald Lee Borom of Glenwood, Alabama, on Jan. 1, 1943. Gerald and Eloise continued to live and have a family in Alabama until moving to Texas in the early 1950s. They moved to the Cranfills Gap area in 1968. Eloise Borom was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Cranfills Gap since 1968. In past years, she was active in the UMW at the church as well as the home extension club. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing. She like swapping recipes with the postmaster at the Gap. She loved pretty flowers, such as wildflowers and daylilies, and had even planted a bed of them on Friday before her death on Tuesday. She had sewn something for almost each one of the children/grandchildren at some point in her life. Eloise loved her husband and family with all her heart and lived each day for them. But, more than that, she loved Christ and worshipped Him as her Lord and Savior for many years. A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Borom had four sons and one daughter. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gerald L. Borom of Cranfills Gap; son, James M. Matthews of Corpus Christi; son, Gerald Patrick Borom of Glenwood, Alabama; son, Lewis A. Borom of Valley Mills; son, William B. Borom of Valley Mills; and daughter, Martha Anne Borom Dickey of Cranfills Gap. She also had numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Pallbearers included Brian Davis, Sidney Hodges, Terry Kirkpatrick, Doug Meyers, Jeff Meyers, and Richard Spitzer. Her grandsons served as honorary pallbearers. Arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Juanice Burgan
Funeral services were held for Juanice Burgan, 80, of Clifton, on Monday, July 22, 2002, at Lawson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Beaty officiating. Juanice Perry was born on Jan. 28, 1922, in Clifton, the daughter of the late Louis Clarence and Mary Ethel Smith Perry. She passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2002, in the Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton after a brief illness. She was raised and educated in Clifton. She married Wilkie N. Burgan and he preceded her in death on June 12, 1979. She was also preceded in death by a son, Bobby Leon Burgan. She lived in Fort Worth for many years where she worked as a technician at an optical clinic before retiring. After retirement, she moved to the Murt’s Lodge area on Lake Whitney, and moved into Clifton in 1979. She was a member of the Clifton First United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star #283, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies’ Auxiliary #8553 of Clifton. Survivors include five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Pallbearers were Danny Rudd, Brian Rudd, Brent Rudd, Brandon Rudd, Raymond Anz, and Michael Rudd. Interment icon was in Clifton cemetery under the direction of Lawson Funeral Home of Meridian.

Charles Mattlage
Funeral services for Charles Mattlage, 70, of Crawford, were held Thursday, July 18, 2002, at First United Methodist Church of Crawford, the Rev. Sidney Roberts and the Rev. Kay Hawkins officiating. Interment icon followed in St. Paul Lutheran cemetery in Crawford. Mattlage died Monday, July 15, 2002. He was born March 18, 1932, in Crawford, the son of Bill and Willie (Clemons) Mattlage. He attended elementary school at Prairie Chapel, graduated from Crawford High School in 1949, and attended Clifton College. He was formerly employed at Rocket-Dyne in McGregor, and later retired from Brown & Root, where he worked as a quality control manager in Bahrain and South Korea. When his children were younger, Mattlage was very active in Little League. He was a member of Crawford First United Methodist Church, Crawford Masonic Lodge #585, and was a board member of the Crawford Community Center. Survivors include one daughter, Charlsie and husband Curtis Whitney of Waco; two sons, Randy Mattlage of Valley Mills, and Kevin and wife Angie Mattlage of Pearland; and six grandchildren, Jason Hicks, Julie Hicks, Jordan Hicks, Scott Mattlage, Lance Mattlage, and Devin Mattlage. Memorials may be made to Crawford Masonic Lodge, Crawford Community Center, or Crawford First United Methodist Church. Foss Funeral Home, Valley Mills, was in charge of arrangements.
