She grew up on the family farm in Lineville, Ala., and after graduating from high school, moved to Chattanooga, Tenn. She met Bill Bankhead on a blind date and married him six months later on March 1, 1953. She always said she was a country girl, but her life as a military wife, took her to live in places around the globe - Germany, Okinawa, Arizona, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Georgia. In nearly 50 years together, she and Bill loved and raised three children, then watched as their children fell in love, married , and raised families of their own. There was no role Bankhead relished more than being Nana to her seven grandchildren. She worked outside the home for most of her adult life, but one particular job, ministry, actually allowed her the opportunity to be God’s hands and feet. She started as a volunteer at the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Columbus, Ga., helping young women with unplanned and often unwanted pregnancies, see they had options besides abortion. Before long, her convictions and compassion for these women and their unborn babies, led her to become the director of the center. No one will ever know how many hearts she touched, but hanging in her bedroom is a portrait of a few of the hundreds of babies who were given a loving family and a future through the center’s adoption agency. Bankhead is survived by her husband, Bill Bankhead of Valley Mills; son, Bill Bankhead, Jr. and wife, Donna, of Boise, Idaho; son, Jeff Bankhead and wife, Kathy, of Mesquite; daughter, Kim Mensching and husband, Bill, of Cordele, Ga.; six grandchildren, Emily, Chance, and Abby Bankhead of Boise, Kerry and Jenna Bankhead of Mesquite, and Johnathan Mensching of Cordele; three brothers, Hugh and Martha Henderson Hendon, George and Jessie Hendon, and Lewis and Edna Hendon; a sister, Dorothy and James Daniel; several sisters-in-law and families, including Margaret Compton, Bobbie and Robert Tagg, June and Cotton Garner, Juanita Boren, Donna Ballard, Maybelle and Bud Toten, Linda and Jerry Fulcher, Anne and Ed Honea, Barbara Salazar, Joyce and Tim Beadle; several brothers-in-law and families including Lawton Bankhead, Larry Bankhead, Jerry and Donna Bankhead, Kenneth and Judy Bankhead, Gary and Jo Bankhead, and several nieces and nephews.
