Morris Otto Huse
Funeral services for Morris Otto Huse, 95, of Clifton, were held Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap, Pastor Terry Atkins officiating. Interment icon followed at Boggy cemetery, near Cranfills Gap. Huse died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. He was born June 16, 1908, in Cranfills Gap, to Ole and Mary (Olson) Huse. He attended school at Mountain View. On Feb. 29, 1928, he harried Lucy Stanford at the Old Rock Church, where he was baptized as a Lutheran. He lived in Bosque and Hamilton Counties all his life. Huse was a farmer in Hamilton County for 74 years, before moving to the Sunset Home in 2003. He took great pride in his farming, producing fields of maize, corn, and cotton. He would load the watermelon and canteloupe he grew into his car and take them to Cranfills Gap to share each year. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. In 1941, he entered an opossum hide in the Sears, Roebuck Fur Show in Dallas, and his pelt was judged the best in the nation at the finals in Chicago. He received the first-prize award at a ceremony held in his honor at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. He was presented with a check for $1, 000 by the general manager of Sears, and he purchased a 1936 Chevrolet with his prize money. Huse was a rock mason and carpenter who helped build the Cranfills Gap school. He served on the school board as a trustee for many years. He also helped build the Sunday School building at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap. In his early years, he enjoyed playing baseball. Years later, he coached youth baseball in the summer. In the winter months, he liked to carve figures out of wood and draw animals on paper. He also enjoyed playing croquet and dominoes at the Gap with all of friends. Later in life, he made arrowheads out of pieces of flint rock he had found. He was considered a great storyteller who could tell true hunting and fishing stories, and his grandchildren often asked him to tell their favorite stories over and over. He was a Norwegian, whose father came to America from Norway as a youth with his family to seek a better way of life. Huse believed God gave him six days of the week for work and play, and the seventh day was always set aside for worship and to thank God for all his blessings. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Huse, who died in December 2002; his parents; three sisters; one brother, and a grandson, Brian Ratliff. Huse is survived by daughters Maxine and husband Bill Maxwell of China Spring, Deloris Jean and husband Raymond Shelton of Murchison, Margie and husband Steve Zobal of Seabrook, Shirley and husband Butch Thompson of Meridian, and Rita and husband Gary Ash of Cranfills Gap; son Dennis Ralph Huse of Whitney; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers included grandsons Randall Maxwell, Steven Zobal, Larry McFarland, Michael Shelton, Tommy Thompson, Barry Thompson, Robbie Thompson, and great-grandson Donny Ratliff. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Barton Bean
Funeral services were held for Ruby Barton Bean, 86, of Clifton on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at First Baptist Church Clifton with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Bean was born on July 15, 1917, to James and Dora (Wyatt) Barton in Mosheim. She passed away on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Scott and White in Temple. She attended school in Mosheim, and on Sept. 27, 1938, she married Roy O. Bean. Baptisted on May 15, 1938, Bean was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clifton. Bean was employed by Harris Laundry and Walls Manufacturing. Her hobbies included canning and gardening. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and friend. Survivors include three sons, James Bean, Kenneth Bean, and Rudy Bean and wife, Rachel, all of Clifton; three daughters, Wanda Jean Thomas and husband, Jim, of Waco, Pat Perkins of Arlington, and Betty Light and husband, Wayne, of Clifton; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchlildren. Pallbearers included Gary Arnold, Jamie Zander, Rex Anderson, Roy Eary, Bill Eary, and Danny Patterson. Internment was at Clifton cemetery under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Yvette Elaine Deibert Marshall
Funeral services were held for Yvette Elaine Deibert Marshall on Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Hemet, Calif., at McWane Funeral Home. Marshall was born in Fort Gordon, Augusta, Ga., on Sept. 27, 1955, the granddaughter of the late Henry and Anna Hampe. She passed away on Oct. 10, 2003, in Hemet, due to complications from cardiomyopathy, diagnosed in 1989. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith in Augusta, Ga., and became a confirmed Lutheran in Killeen. She began her education in Clifton, moved to Killeen, where she attended Peebles Elementary and Rancier Junior High. She graduated from Killeen High School and attended Central Texas College to study art. She married , started her family, and continued her education in computers, as well as the arts. She loved family, friends, and animals. All children were special to her, and many spoke of the good food, acceptance, and counseling she provided for them. Preceding her in death was her father Frederick Lynn Deibert. She is survived by her children, Lena, William, Nicholas, and Katie of Hemet, Calif.; one granddaughter, Angelique Marshall of Phoenix, Ariz.; her mother, Laverne Adams; step father, Leon Adams of Temple; four brothers, Clayton and wife, Florence Deibert, of Hewitt; Michael Deibert of Austin, Fred and wife, Patricia, Deibert of Killeen, and William and wife, Karla, Deibert of Highland Village; three sisters, Claire and husband, Stephen, Alford, of Southlake, Donna Linn of Plano, and Sue and husband, David, Faught of Anchorage, Ark.; and 12 nieces, nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Royce Cooper
Graveside funeral services were held for Royce Cooper, 78, of Meridian on Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in the Meridian cemetery with Rev. Richard Creech officiating. Cooper was born Jan. 18, 1925, in the Spring Creek community of Bosque County near Iredell, the son of the late James Fletcher and Velma McElroy Cooper. He passed away early Saturday morning, Oct. 11, 2003, in the Scott & White Hospital in Temple after an extended illness. Cooper completed school in Iredell, and on Feb. 4, 1948, he was united in marriage to Hilma Jermstad in Iredell. He was a long-time resident of Meridian where he was a member of the First Baptist Church. He worked for many years as a bulldozer operator on various farms, ranches, and constructin projects until his health forced him to retire. He is preceded in death by a son, James Russell Cooper, on June 27, 2001. Survivors include wife, Hilma Cooper of Meridian; daughters, Donna Offutt and husband, Wallace, of Lewisville and Rita Sowers and husband, Michael, of Hewitt; grandchildren, James and Krista Offutt, Michael Rudd, Stephanie and Denbigh Cherry, and Daniel Tonya Cooper; brothers, Kenneth Cooper of Clifton and Donnie Cooper of Bryan; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Emil Tyson Stubbs
Funeral services will be held for Emil Tyson (E. T.) Stubbs, 68, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Woodway First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Smith and Dr. Bill Austin officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. Family will receive visitors from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey, 6101 Bosque Blvd. in Waco. Stubbs was born February 9, 1935 in Hamilton County, Texas to James Clifford and Hilma (Enger) Stubbs. He passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, in a Waco hospital. He was christened and confirmed at St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap where he spent his youth, graduating from high school in 1953. Stubbs served in the United States Army and attended Texas A&M; University. He worked in the Waco office of the Texas Farm Bureau for over 21years where he met his future wife. Stubbs married Dorothy Feller on Oct. 14, 1960, in Waco. He moved to Giddings in 1980 and served as General Manager for Giddings Petroleum Corporation. After his retirement in early 2001, he returned to the Waco area. He was an active member of the Robinson Drive Methodist Church serving on the administrative board. He was later a member of the United Methodist Church in Giddings, again serving on the administrative board. While in Giddings, Stubbs was active in the community serving for three years as a director of the Giddings Chamber of Commerce, with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and as a member of the Noon Lions Club. He also served on the advisory board of the Giddings State School. Upon returning to Waco, he became a member of the Woodway First United Methodist Church enjoying the company of other members of the OWLS organization. Stubbs was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Preceeding him in death were his mother and father; stepmother, Rachel (Bonner) Stubbs; brothers, Leo Carroll, Gene Felix, and John Clinton Stubbs; and sister, Elnora Estelle Burns. Stubbs is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dorothy Stubbs of McGregor; sons, Jeffrey Scott Stubbs and wife, Danna, of Headland, Alabama; Barry Glenn Stubbs and wife, Wendy, of Huntsville; daughters, Terri Deanne Taylor and husband, Johnny, of Lorena, and Linda Carol Stubbs of Spring; grandchildren Christopher and Deanna Stubbs, Jessica and Tyson Taylor, and Dylan and Morgan Stubbs; brothers, Charles Stubbs and wife, Gloria, of Livingston; James Stubbs and wife, Barbara, of West Columbia, Texas; sisters, Betty Haven of Garland; and Sarah Gohlke and husband, Robert, of Gatesville; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws, as well as loving friends too numerous to count. Memorials in Stubbs honor may be made to the International Rett Syndrome Association at (www.rettsyndrome.org), or 1-800-818-RETT, or to the Woodway First United Methodist building fund. Ethel M. Doty
Funeral services were held for Ethel M. Doty, 90, of Meridian on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in the Lawson Funeral Home Chapel in Meridian with Rev. Richard Creech officiating. Doty was born Sept. 25, 1913, in Whitney, the daughter of Harvey L. and Myrtle Minnie Brooks Brown. She passed away on Friday, Oct. 9, 2003, in Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco after a brief illness. Doty lived most of her life in the Kopperl, Morgan, and Meridian areas. For many years she worked as a practical nurse for the Meridian Hospital and later for Meridian Manor before retiring. She was a long-time member of the Meridian First Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents; son, Charles Ray Paris; sisters, Bell Lane, Bonnie Barker, Clara Braziel, and brothers, Tracy Brown and Earl Brown. Survivors include sons, Jimmie Paris and wife, Cindy, of Cleburne, and Billy Joe Parker and wife, Kay, of Meridian; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grand children; sister, Wilma Brown of Kopperl; brother, Sid Brown and wife, Thelma, of Abbott; daughter-in-law, Theresa Paris of Laguna Park; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Weldon Brown, Ricky Jourden, Mike Braziel, Richard Braziel, John Brown, David Brown, Joe McAninch, and Murrie Plunkett. Burial was in the Morgan cemetery under the arrangements of Lawson Funeral Home.

John D. Sheppard
Funeral services for John D. Sheppard, 75, of Clifton, were held Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Marshall and Marshall Chapel in Whitney, with Bruce Martin officiating. Interment icon followed in Oak Grove cemetery at Walnut Springs. Sheppard died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton. He was the son of Samuel Henry (Dick) and Lottie May (Waddington) Sheppard. He graduated from Walnut Springs Schools, and attended Clifton College. He graduated from Texas Christian University with a B.A. degree in Education, and received his Master of Education from Tarleton State University. He first taught at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, then at Cranfills Gap. He taught in England in 1957, and returned to England in 1967, teaching grammar school at Whitton, Middlesex County, until 1969. He taught in Waco for several years, then returned to Cranfills Gap and retired. He had lived in Clifton since 1994. He married Agnes Mary Davidson in Fort Worth on Jan. 24, 1953. She preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 1995. Sheppard was also preceded in death by his parent, and by a sister, Mabel Hill, in February 1996. He was a member of Laguna Park Church of Christ. Survivors include children Frances and husband G. Glen Jones Jr. of Whitney, and Margaret and husband Robert Rodstrom of Cranfills Gap; sisters Elizabeth Davidson of Clifton and Pat Hedrick of Tyler; and grandsons Gus Jones III and Neil Jones. Memorials may be sent to King United Methodist Church’s Family Life Center, P.O. Box 612, Whitney, TX 76692. Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors, Whitney, was in charge of arrangements.

Daniel A. Amundson
Funeral services for Daniel A. Amundson, 71, a native of Clifton, were held at the Fort Logan National cemetery in Denver, Colo. Amundson was interred with full military honors. He died Oct. 15, 2003, in Topeka, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvina and Adolph Amundson; brothers Irving, Raymond, and Alton Amundson; and sister Alice Amundson. He is survived by his children, Deborah and husband Dennis Jones of Lakewood, Colo., and David and wife Diane Amundson of Sugarland; stepchildren Mike and wife Liz Heffernan of Napa, Calif., Jimmy Heffernan of Dallas, and Kathy and husband Gary Waites of Alta Loma, Calif.; grandchildren Amanda Rohleder, Abigail Amundson, Rhetta Amundson, Alex Amundson, Ryan and wife Caroline Jones, and Chris Heffernan; great-grandson Palmer Jones; brothers Jodie Amundson, Alfred Amundson, David Amundson, Jimmy Amundson, and John Amundson; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests memorial contributions be made in his name to the VFW Legislative Service at VFW National Headquarters, 406 W. 34th Street, # 718, Kansas City, MO 64111, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
