Bertha Bearden
Funeral services for Bertha Irene (Downey) Bearden were held on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Connally officiating and the Rev. Don Bearden assisting. Bearden was born to Will R. Downey and Mary (Riddle) Downey in Mosheim on Jan. 15, 1903. She passed away on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home in Clifton. As a child, the Downey family moved to Jones County in West Texas, where they lived only a short time. Beartha became ill and the family doctor advised them to travel for her health. With that advice they moved to Hill County for a year or so, finally moving to Bosque County in 1905, where she lived the remainder of ther life. On De.c 9, 1923, she married Audie Russell Bearden. They continued to live in Bosque County where they farmed and ranched in the Cayote-Fairview communities. They were married 71 years before her husband died suddenly on May 5, 1995. At that time, Bearden moved to the Sunset Home. Her daughter-in-law, Joyce Bearden, passed away on June 5, 1995. Bearden loved to farm as she did all of it for several years because of her husband’s back injury. She loved to help with the cattle, always enjoyed gardening, and canning all kinds of vegetables and fruit. She loved having company and enjoyed cooking her the hired hands that worked for them on the farm. She loved her grandchildren and was always teaching them to cook, sew, how to work in the garden, and how to help with the chores. One can only imagine living before the invention of the automobile, airplane, radio, television, space shuttles, running water in the home, electricity, and telephones in the country communities. Bearden often told of her seeing the first automobile. She stated that it was white and belonged to a doctor that made a home visit in the country. She said it was a great cloud of dust following the car so she and her brothers and sisters hid until the dust had cleared. She loved her church and was always in attendance. She belonged to the First Baptist Church in Fairview for many years. After her mother died, she joined the Cayote Methodist Church where she was still a member at the time of her death. For many years, this church and the Methodist Church at Cayote, only had a half-time preacher. Every other Sunday there was preaching at each church, and the family attended church on that basis. There was a lot of question by family and community members that she was able to answer due to her longevity. We are all thankful that we were able to know and love her through the generations. She will be missed by all in the years to come. The family feels truly blesed for having her these many 101-plus years. Our thanks to the Lord! Survivors include one son, Welden Bearden of Lorena; one granddaughter, Susan Harding and her husband, Ken; a great-granddaughter, Kelsie Harding, all of Kennet Square, PA; one grandson, Bart Bearden and his wife, Connie; great-granddaughters, Kendall and Campbell Bearden, all of Frisco; an adopted brother, David Brittain and his wife, Mary, of Clifton; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Bobbie Bearden, Clarkie McMillan, Mike Mireles, Ken Hardin, Bill Law, and Bart Bearden. Honorary pallbearers were all men of the Fairview Baptist Church. Beartha is the last of W.R. and Mary Downey’s six children. She was also the last in-law of her husband’s family which had eight children all deceased. Memorials can be made to the Fairview cemetery Assn., C/O Jerry White, Valley Mills, Texas, or the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home.
