Mary D. Harbison
Funeral services were held for Mary D. Harbison, 75, of Clifton, on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Clifton, with Rev. Bill Schibler officiating. Interment icon followed in the Smith Bend/Coon Creek cemetery near Laguna Park. She passed away on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 15, in the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. Harbison was born Nov. 8, 1930, in Webb City, Mo., a daughter of the late Rex and Pansy Barber. On Aug. 7, 1950, she was united in marriage to Alton C. Harbison in Ulysses, Kan. The couple lived in Perryton, Texas for several years before moving to Laguna Park in 1983, and later into Clifton a few months ago. She was a member of the Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Clifton. She was preceded in death by her parents and by a daughter, Susan K. Harbison. Harbison is survived by her husband A.C. Harbison of Clifton; daughters Lillian Bost and husband, Jerome of Perryton; Tina Anderson and husband, Donny of McQueeney; son, Kent Harbison and wife, Denise of Clifton; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers were Dewey Ratliff, Melvin King, Kent Harbison, Jerome Bost, Donny Anderson, and David Selsor. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 26460, Austin, Texas, 78755-0460. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Lawson Funeral Home.

Ola Deal Hix
Graveside funeral services for Ola Deal Hix, 100, of Waco and formerly of Valley Mills, were held on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Valley Mills cemetery. She passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, in a local hospital. Hix was born July 5, 1906, in Clifton, the daughter of Calvin M. and Pearl (Barnard) Deal. She lived in Valley Mills and was a 1925 graduate of Valley Mills High School. At the time of her death, she was the oldest know living graduate of Valley Mills High School. She has lived in Waco for the past 70 years. She married Alton Hix in 1929. He preceded her in death in 1936. Also preceding her in death was her son, Joe Alton Hix, Jr. Hix is survived by a grandson, Jimmy Hix. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Foss Funeral Home.

Van Doren Olsen, Sr.
Funeral services for Van Doren Olsen, Sr., 71, were held on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Clifton, with Pastor B.I. Dahl presiding. Interment icon followed in the Clifton Lutheran cemetery. Olsen passed away on Monday, Oct. 2. Born Sept. 24, 1935, in Clifton, he was one of five children born to Willie and Helga Dahl Olsen. He was baptized on Dec. 1, 1935, and confirmed in the faith on June 18, 1950, both in Trinity Lutheran Church of Clifton. He attended first through twelfth grade and graduated from Clifton High School, recently attended his 50th class reunion. After graduation, he worked for Clifton Mercantile, Sormrude’s, Lisa Warren, Bonny Holly’s Sewing, and Clifton Funeral Home. On Sept. 1, 1962, he married Jackie Hammond at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap. To this union, three children were born, including Vanessa Ann, Dorothy Marie, and Van Doren, Jr. They lived in Clifton all of their life. Olsen was in the National Guard from 1955 to 1986. Those who knew him said that he enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren and he loved rides with his son and son-in-law, as well as his scratch off lottery. He was a kind man and would do anything for another person. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Leon. Olsen is survived by his wife, Jackie; brothers, Willie and wife, Jenice of Robinson and Jimmie and wife Beth of Aquilla; sister Wilma Emming of Clifton; and an aunt, Louise Outlaw of Clifton; two daughters, Vanessa Olsen of Clifton and Dorothy Hartley and husband Charles Dean of Clifton; a son, Van Doren Olsen, Jr., and wife Brenda of Clifton; grandchildren Dana Hartley Murphy and husband Eric, Lana Hartley, Elizabeth Olsen, Emily Olsen, Vincent Olsen, and Joshua Olsen; and a great-grandson, Dayton Murphy. Pallbearers included Roy Dale Eary, Danny Hartley, Lee Burgamy, Billy Eary, Dwayne Burgamy, Jason Terrell, Danny Fewins, and Gary Glenn. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Clinton Fay
Funeral services were held for Clinton K. Fay, 91, on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Zion United Church in Womack. He passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Clifton. Fay was born in Port Wing, Wis., on April 16, 1915. After serving as a B-29 crew chief in the Army Air Force during WWII, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, he worked for Baker-Hughes in Houston. Upon retiring from Baker, he began farming the land he had acquired in Port Wing. At 89, he retired again and moved to Clifton, where he met and married Doris Cox. He was preceded in death by former wives Thelma Keyes Fay and Sophie Sharpe Fay. Fay is survived by his wife Doris of Clifton; daughter Patricia Pate of Clifton; sons Ken and wife Tess Fay of San Antonio; Mike and wife Teri Fay of Colleyville; grandchildren Doug and wife Trish Fay of Frisco; Matt Fay of San Antonio; Clint and wife Tina Pate of Clifton; Nick and wife Irina of Ashburn, Va.; and Ryan Ray of San Antonio. Also surviving him are great grandchildren Amanda, Ashley, and Allison Pate of Clifton; Sydney and Skylar Ray of Frisco; and Anthony Pate of Ashburn, Va. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Donald ‘Don’ Nelson
Funeral services were held for Donald “Don” Nelson, 72, of Victoria, on Thursday, Sept. 7, with Rev. Mike Singenstreu officiating. He passed away on Monday, Sept. 4. Nelson was born on Oct. 20, 1933, in Bosque County, to the late Alfred and Palma Olson Nelson. He was an underwriting manager for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co., and a Presbyterian. He was preceded in death by sisters Nell O. Maynard and Mary Ann Nelson; and brother Archie Nelson. Nelson is survived by his wife Gladys Jaschke Nelson; daughter Sharon M. Nelson of Fort Worth and Janis L. Nelson Smith of Arlington; son Gary A. Nelson of Houston; brother Gerald Nelson of Cranfills Gap; and three grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers included Rebecca Nelson, Kathy Nelson, Robert Nelson, Loeen Nelson, Nathan Tisdale, David Smith, Cody Bagnall, Benjamin Baylor, Walker Baylor, Charlie Braun, Glen Dietzel, and David Smith. Memorials may be made to the Christ Presbyterian Church of Hospice of South Texas. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Rosewood Funeral Chapels of Victoria.

Alice Sofie Creswell
Graveside funeral services were held for Alice Sofie Creswell, 94, on Monday, Oct. 16, at Waco Memorial Park. She passed away on Oct. 13, in the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home. Creswell was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on May 28, 1912, to Norwegian immigrants Sofie N. Nilsen and George Arnt Arnesen. In 1916 the family came by boat to Galveston, and settled in Port Arthur, where Mr. Arnesen worked on the docks as a stevedore. Creswell was a long-time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Port Arthur, where she was confirmed and married . She was very active in the Sunday school, youth group, ladies organizations, and the church choir. In 1934 she married Philip B. Creswell and they had two daughters, Shirley and Phyllis. Those who knew her said that Creswell was very devoted to her family. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She also enjoyed sewing, painting, and playing her organ. In 1973 she and Philip retired first to Lakewood, Colo. and then to Hewitt, Texas, where they joined Christ Lutheran Church in Waco. She is preceded in death by her husband Philip Creswell and her sister Florence Gentis. She is survived by her brother George R. Arnesen of Bridge City; daughter Shirley and husband Harold Meissner of Dallas; Phyllis and husband Craig Fleming of Georgetown; nine grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren Memorials may be made to Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home, P.O. Box 71, Clifton, Texas 76634. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Connally/Compton Funeral Directors.

Marie Hill
Funeral services for Marie Hill, 93, of Whitney, were held on Sunday, Oct. 1, at First Baptist Church in Whitney, with Rev. Joe Bob Boyd and Rev. Eddie Booth presiding. Interment icon followed in Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Hill passed away Friday, Sept. 29, at Lake Whitney Medical Center. Born July 14, 1913, in Whitney, the daughter of John Henry and Lila (Sharp) Hampton, Hill graduated from Whitney High School in 1931. She went to work for Community Public Service Utilities Company, working in their offices in Whitney, Clifton, and Valley Mills. She married Ansel Boyd Hill on Dec. 21, 1936. During World War II, the couple, along with their parents, worked in Naval shipyards in Bremerton, Wash. Returning to Whitney in 1948, the two established Hill Dry Goods just as Whitney Dam and Lake Whitney were being completed. She continued operation of the business being very dedicated to Whitney in every way. She was involved in civic and church affairs and sat on many committees for the betterment and beautification of Whitney. The Hills were very involved with the establishment of Whitney Hospital in the 1950s and 60s. She was a charter member of many organizations including Lake Whitney Chamber of Commerce, Lake Whitney Association, Downtown Whitney Merchants, Whitney Area Museum, and Whitney Ex-students Association. She was named Citizen of the Year in 1987. She loved traveling, camping, and animals, especially dogs. She joined First Baptist Church at an early age and was a faithful member as long as health permitted, serving in many areas. Marie has resided at Park Plaza Nursing Home for the last year and a half and considered staff and residents her extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ansel Boyd Hill on Jan. 12, 1990; and one sister, Ruth Keeton. Hill is survived by cousins Margaret Nowlin, Whitney; Darlene Halbert and husband Jodie, Whitney; Tim and Loretta Halbert and family, Whitney; Mark and Lisa Halbert and family, Whitney; Martha and Denton Yocum, Pearland; Carolyn and Jeff Fleming and family, Austin; Michael and Deborah Yocum and family, Pearland; Bill and Mary Lou Bilski, Eagle Pass; William Bilski, Eagle Pass; Janet and Joe Crider and family, Missouri; and Wayne and Bertie Bilski and family, Eagle Pass. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors.

CPO J.S. Rose
Retired U.S. Navy Chief Hospital Corpsman Joseph “Joe” S. Rose passed away at his home in Meridian after his long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held on Oct. 21, at 1 p.m., at the flag pole on the family ranch in Meridian. Representatives from the U.S. Navy and a Masonic Lodge will be officiating. Following, his ashes will be laid to rest in the Rose Family plot in Upperville, Va. Rose was born on Sept. 17, 1930, to John Thomas Rose and Opal E. Lunsford. Proud of his 22-year naval career, Rose expecially loved to talk about his 18 months as a horse trainer at President Eisenhower’s farm in Gettysburg. Those who knew him best said that his gift for gab and fantastic memory for details amazed all. He received numerous decorations, served in the Korean conflict, three tours in the Vietnam War, including invaluable aid to the men during the USS Essex explosion. Rose was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John T. Rose and Martin E. Rose; and a son, Michael J. Rose. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie “Rosie” of Meridian; former wife Betty Willson; daughter Linda Utton and husband Ken of Meridian; sons Larry Rose of Corpus Christi and Lt. Col. David Rose and wife Katharine of Henderson, Nev.; and stepson Michael Gray of Capistrano Beach, Calif.; four grandsons, Christopher Utton and wife Shana of Glen Rose; Brian Rose of Chula Vista, Calif.; Kevin Rose of Corpus Christi; Jonathan Rose and soon to be born brother Michael Joseph Rose of Henderson, Nev.; sister, Barbara Jane Dean and husband Sam of Atoka, Va.; and aunt Mae Rosie Russell of Warrington, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Hear, P.O. Box 2081, Whitney, Texas, 76692. The family issued a special thanks to the oncology staff at the VA Hospital in Temple and to the nurses at Hospice of the Heart. For directions to the ranch, call 254/435-2792.

Bennie Perry
Funeral services for Bennie Frances Perry were held Monday, Oct. 9, at the Pavilion of Monahans Memorial Cemetary. Perry passed away on Thursday, Oct. 5. Perry was born July 16, 1922, in Winters, to Benjamin Franklin and Fannie Cora Pierce. The family moved to Lamb County, Bula, Texas, when she was a child. When she graduated from Sudan High School, she went to work in Littlefield. There she met John David, home from the war and building cotton gins. They moved to Imperial, where he began working for Magnolia Oil Company. They lived there until 1955 when Magnolia moved their oil field office to Monahans. They joined Calvary Baptist Church, where John became a deacon, and Bennie taught beginners in Sunday School. She worked at the cafeteria in Hudler Junior High School, in Monahans for several years. In 1999, she moved to her daughter’s home in Clifton because of failing health. She met new friends in Clifton, but her heart was always in Monahans, where she had buried her husband, and where she had been surrounded by many friends, including those in her Sunday School class. Perry was preceded in death by her loving husband, John David Perry in May, 1980; brother Knox Pierce, Russel Pierce, Phillip Pierce, and Son Pierce; sisters, Katherine Pierce and Ruth Calloway. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn and husband Ronnie Cosper of Clifton; her son David and wife Lucia Perry of Sherwood, Ark.; grandchildren Austin Perry and wife Ashley; Nathan Perry and wife Stacy; Amanda Perry; Corie Cosper Love and husband Weston; Colby Cosper; and one great-grandchild, Charles David Love. Also surviving her is one sister, Gladys and husband Travis Allen; brother Bud Pierce and wife LaJoyce; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Arrangements were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.
