Joan Grusendorf
Joan Grusendorf, age 78, of Hewitt formerly of Valley Mills passed away Tuesday, May 30, in a local hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 3, at Patton Baptist Church near Valley Mills, under the direction of Foss Funeral Home. Interment icon was in Crawford cemetery. Grusendorf was born Dec. 14, 1927. She was the daughter of Walter and Bessie (Miller) Hurst. She was a graduate of Crawford High School. and had lived in the central Texas area all of her life. She was also a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. According to those who knew her, she loved to work in the yard and interior decorating. She had designed and sold many homes in the area. Grusendorf loved family and family gatherings. Survivors include two sons, Michael Allen Grusendorf and Timothy Earl Grusendorf, both of McGregor; a daughter, Debby Holmes Lynch of Valley Mills; a brother, W. A. Hurst of Waco; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to either the American Heart Association or to Patton Baptist Church.

Bill Woodside
Funeral services for Bill Woodside, 87, of Whitney, who was affectionately known as “Mr. Lake Whitney, ” were held Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney. Interment icon followed in Evergreen cemetery in Paris. He died Friday, June 2, 2006, in Whitney. Woodside was born on Dec. 7, 1918, in Paris, to J. Frank and Minnie Mae Ritchie Woodside. He served his country during World War II in the Marines. He married Hazel Lourie Coker on June 20, 1949, in Paris. She preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1990. He owned and operated Lake Whitney Views Newspaper in Whitney for many years, and had worked as a reporter and photographer for Hillsboro Evening Mirror. He was instrumental in getting Kimball Bend Bridge restored, and helped start the Lake Whitney Humane Society. He helped begin the Miss Lake Whitney Pageants over 50 years ago, a tradition that still continues. Woodside was a member of King Memorial United Methodist Church in Whitney, American Legion Post #522, VFW Post #8571, and the Whitney Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and son, Robert (Bob) Seymor Hirsch. Woodside is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Leonard W. Greenwade; grandsons Skip Greenwade and wife, Gabby, and Kyle Greenwade and wife, Carol; and great-grandson, Collin Buck Greenwade, all of Crosby. Memorials may be made to Whitney Area Museum, P.O. Box 1704, Whitney, TX 76692; Park Plaza Nursing Home, 1244 State Park Road, Whitney, TX 76692; or Hospice of the Heart, P.O. Box 2081, Whitney, TX 76692. Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors, Whitney, was in charge of arrangements.

Barbara McKinzie Kirbie
Barbara McKinzie Kirbie, 63, of Anchorage, Ala., died of congestive heart failure on May 31, at Providence Extended Care Center. Visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, with services following. Chaplain Don McCullough officiated. Kirbie was born Nov. 2, 1942, in Sherman. She moved to Alaska in June of 1970 and taught math at Mears Middle School unitl Bartlett High School opened in 1973. She taught math at Bartlett from 1973 until her retirement in 1989. She was the math club sponsor while teaching at Barlett High School. Her father, Otis McKinzie, preceded her in death. She is survived by her mother and step-father, Bobbie and Joe Denson of Clifton; sister, Linda Loyd of Irving; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Ken Morton of Anchorage; grandsons, Bradley Morton and Scott Morton of Anchorage; and numerous extended family members in Texas. There will be a memorial service at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. Fellowship and lunch will follow the service. All friends and relatives are invited.

Norman E. “Rusty” Day
Norman E. (Rusty) Day, of Clifton, formerly of Fort Worth, passed away peacefully Monday, June 5, at his home in Clifton, after a courageous battle against lung cancer. Funeral service were held Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran cemetery. Born July 3, 1931 in Olton, Day graduated from Austin High School in El Paso. He served as a marine in the Korean War, married Eileen Florence Polsley in San Diego, Calif. in 1954, and began his remarkable 29 year career with General Dynamics in 1957. He received a Certificate of Management from Texas Christian University and completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard University. The crown jewel of his career was the highly successfully F-16 Fighting Falcon program which continues today. According to those who knew him, Day was a highly talented and admired materials contract negotiator who was known for his outstanding leadership. He loved his work and his co-workers. He retired as Vice President of Material, Fort Worth Division in 1986. He and his wife moved to their cattle ranch in Clifton, in 1986, where they have spent the last 20 years. He loved being a rancher and loved the land, especially growing and sharing the abundant crop of vegetables from his garden. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, caring for his cattle and passing on his love for these things to his children and grandchildren. Known for his incredible wit and free spirit, his values of kindness, integrity and honor, and his enthusiasm for life and love for his family are his legacy. Day was preceded in death by parents Herbert and Lottie Belle Day; mother Gertrude Fuchs; sister Elaine Wright; and brother Waymon Day. He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Eileen; son Michael Norman Day and wife Karen of Round Rock; daughters Colleen Bocanegra and husband Willie of Decatur, Carrie Oberle and husband Jack of Decatur; grandchildren Troy Michael and Paul Timothy Day; Sophie Eileen, Sarah Colleen and Elise Marie Bocanegra; and Katie Marie and Nicholas Edward Oberle; step-sister Johnell Day of Hurst; Aunt Margie Smith of Mineral Wells; and many nieces and nephews and best friend, P.B. (Preacher) Knight of Clifton. Pallbearers included Troy Day, Paul Day, William Bocanegra, Jr., Jack Oberle, Stephen Brady, and Scott Weathersby. Honorary Pallbearers were P.B. Knight, Ray Emerson, Ray Jones, Lewon Simpson, Charles White and Don Wren. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church of Clifton. Clifton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Olita Coronado Gutierrez
Olita Coronado Gutierrez, age 61, of Waco passed away Sunday at her residence. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Valley Mills, with Rev. Christi Robins officiating. Interment icon was at Hillcrest cemetery in Temple, under the direction of Foss Funeral Home. Gutierrez was born in Snyder, on Oct. 9, 1944. She was the daughter of Augustine and Maria (Rios) Coronado. She was married to Douglas Jeffries Sr. in 1965. She later married John Gutierrez who preceded her in death in 2001. According to those who knew her, Olita loved family gatherings, gardening, and the outdoors. She was known for her outgoing spirit, laughter, and love for all. Survivors include her children, Douglas M. Jeffries Jr., Maurice Jeffries, Daniel Jeffries, and Zina Hoisington; step-children, Virginia, Janie, and Juan Jr.; sisters, Mary Felan, Gloria Guerrero, Maria Merriman; brothers, Manuel Cantu, Raymond Coronado; grandchildren, April Lewis, Richard Hoisington, Cameron Jeffries, Connor Jeffries, Maurice Jeffries Jr., Ivelisse Rodriguez, Antonio Rodriguez, Krystal Chapman, Brittany Chapman, Buddie Chapman; great-grandchildren, Damian Lewis, Keenan Lewis, and Marcel Douglas; and a special granddaughter by heart, McKenna Rae Harper.

Rodger Dale Dove, Sr.
Funeral services for Rodger Dale Dove, Sr., 61, of Laguna Park, were held on Thursday, July 6, at the Lake Whitney Baptist Church, with Pastor Ken Stevens presiding. Dove passed away at his residence on Monday, July 3. Interment icon was at the Smith Bend Cook Creek cemetery. Dove was born Nov. 12, 1944, in Gonzales, to Lanom and Gladys Knapp Dove. He attended Gonzales High School. On July 18, 1964, he married Shirley Margaret Johnson “Owen” in BayCliff and the couple had seven children. He worked as a corrections officer for Limestone County and Bosque County. Those who knew him said that he was a loving husband and father who will be missed Dove was preceded in death by his son, James Howard Dove; daughter-in-law, Carla Ann McElyea Dove; and his parents. He is survived by his wife Shirley; sons Wendell Johnson and wife Toni; Jimmy Johnson and wife Debbie; Roger Johnson and wife Debra; Noland Johnson and wife Debbie; Rodger Dove, Jr; Obie Dove and wife Tiffany; 24 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; sisters Sharon Biehuake “Dove, ” Brenda Rhoads, and Beverly Irle. Pallbearers were members of the Bosque County Sheriff’s Office, including Sheriff Charlie Jones, Investigator Adam Sowder, Patrol Sergeant Trey Sowder, Investigator Darren Artzt, Deputy Lucas Speer, Deputy Lance Barner, and Chief Albert Biggs. Funeral services were under the direction of Clifton Funeral Home.

Donald Carr
Funeral services for Donald Carr, 68, of Buffalo, were held on Monday, June 26, at First Baptist Church in Buffalo. Rev. Dale Osteen, Rev. Jerry Smith, and Craig Graham officiated. He passed away Thursday evening, June 22, in Little Rock, Ark. Burial was in the Buffalo City cemetery. Carr was born March 19, 1938, in Lubbock, to Audry O’Neal and Ora Ella (Gray) Carr. He came to Buffalo from Rockport in 1965, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Buffalo. He retired after 32 years as a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. At the time of his death, he was serving as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1 in Leon County, having served in this capacity since his election in 1995. He enjoyed working on radios and televisions and this hobby developed into a side business. Those who knew him said that he was a devoted family man, loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandson. He loved to pick and play pranks on his grandchildren. He always treated people fairly in his court. Carr actively supported the Leon County Livestock Show, and he always got a group together to purchase animals at the show. He is preceded in death by his parents, and a granddaughter, Brandy Rutledge. He is survived by hi wife, Jo Ann Carr; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Melanie Carr of Elkhart; daughter, Justine Rutledge of Buffalo; cousin, Nellie Thorogood of Kingswood; and several other cousins; five grandchildren, Brandon Rutledge, Brian Rutledge, Brittney Rutledge, Kimberly Carr, and Alaina Carr; and one great-grandson, Brian Stephen Rutledge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brandy Rutledge Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Centerville High School, 813 South Commerce, Centerville, TX, 75833. Services were under the direction of Buffalo Funeral Home.

Charles Basham
Charles Oliver Basham, 70, of La Vernia, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 13. Graveside services were held Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Bethlehem cemetery in Whitney, with Dr. Jerry Smith officiating. Charles Oliver was born June 22, 1936 to Charles T. and Wilda Hensley Basham. He was baptized during his church’s revival at age 13. He attended Stephenville High School and Draughn’s Business School in Fort Worth. He was a Dallas policeman early in his adult life and later became a helicopter pilot in the army. During the Viet Nam conflict he trained new pilots at Ft. Walters, and later joined Air America spending several years as a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam, Thailand, and Laos, flying CIA support missions and downed pilot rescue missions. He loved flying and was always ready for high risk missions. Later, he worked in the commercial electronic sign business. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sons, Lewis Craig, Arlie Wayne and Charles Ricky. He is survived by two brothers, Wylie Basham and wife, Patricia of Clifton; and Gary Basham and wife, Jan of Plano; sons, Toby and wife, Janice of La Vernia, Mike and wife, Michelle of La Vernia; daughters, Renee Del Bosque of McAllen; Michelle Todd and husband, Cooter of Nocona; grandchildren, Luke Basham and wife, Natalie; Travis Basham, Hunter Basham, Kristin Basham, Cody Basham, Christopher Del Bosque, Jack Del Bosque, Kaitlyn Del Bosque, Dean Todd, Payton Todd, and Royce Todd. Funeral services were under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors.

Albin J. Zaremba
Services for Albin J. Zaremba, 79, of Temple, were held Saturday, Aug. 5, at the chapel of the Olin E. Teague Veterans Center in Temple. He passed away Wednesday, July 26. Burial was in the Clifton cemetery. Zaremba was born in Chicago to Ignatius and Wanda Mary Ner Zaremba. He moved to Temple in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years and was a veteran of the Korean War. He married Lela F. Anz on Dec. 27, 1950. He was a Catholic and a member of VFW Post No. 1820 and DAV State Chapter No. 2. Survivors are his wife of Temple; two sons, Gary Don Zaremba of Temple and Ronald Clifford Blassingame of Salado; a daughter, Shirley Marie Finstad of Goldthwaite; two brothers, Tony Zaremba and Eddie Zaremba, both of Chicago; three sisters, Wanda Kohan of Chicago, Genevieve Galuszka of Wilmington, Ill., and Julia Syrylo of Baltimore, Md.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials can be made to American Cancer Society, 2433 Ridgepoint Drive, Suite B, Austin, Tx, 78754. Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple is in charge of arrangements.
