MARTHA THATE, age 83, of Coleman, died Friday (October 19, 2001) at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday (October 21, 2001) at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Northway officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thate was born June 30, 1918 at Stacy, Coleman County, Texas and was a daughter of the late Will and Rosie Mae Johnson Dobbs. She grew up in Coleman County. On April 13, 1934 she married John Henry Thate and he preceded her in death on August 1, 1971. She was a housewife and a member of Bible Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Roy Lee Thate (and wife Bettie) of San Angelo; three daughters, Emma Lou Brammer (and husband Kyle) of Ferris, Texas, Ann Neuens (and husband Bob) of Cedar Hill, Texas and Linda Sue Thate of Coleman; one sister, Liddie White of Coleman; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Thate and a son, Sonny Thate; two grandchildren, Luis Gonzales, Jr. and Kyle Brammer, Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Lynn Thate and Jonathan Lee Thate.

PEARL HORNE, age 90 of Coleman, died Friday, October 26, 2001, at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2001, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Loyd Hopper officiating, assisted by Rev. Jeff Robinett. Burial will follow in Coleman cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Horne was born August 12, 1911 in Lawn, Texas, a daughter of Emmett Clarence Jameson and Lettie Eudora Davis Jameson. She was raised and attended schools in Coleman and married Cecil Edgar Horne on May 16, 1931. Mrs. Horne was active in the Coleman County Home Demonstration Club, Bowen Home Demonstration Club and Centennial Home Demonstration Club for 38 years. She was also a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Triple L Club, the Farm Bureau, Breeder-Feeder and the Centennial and Talpa Centennial P.T.A. for 20 years. She was a retired Rancher and a member of the United Christian and Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Leta Pearl Brown of Coleman, Mary C. Roberts (and husband Donald Milford) of Forney, Texas, Edwina Hopper (and husband Loyd) of Coleman; one brother, Robert Jameson (and wife Helen) of Coleman; one brother-in-law, Doyle Glasson of Coleman; six grandchildren, Leslie Fambrough (and wife Donna) of Bonneterre, Missouri, David Fambrough of San Angelo, Stephanie Franciso of New Mexico, Wayne Roberts (and wife Caran) of Forney, Texas, Jackie Talley (husband Robert) of Hewitt, Texas and Allena Yates (and husband Billy) of Phoenix, Arizona; 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Horne was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, two brothers and two grandchildren, Dorlah and James Hopper.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Holiday Hill Nursing Center, 245 State Highway 153, Coleman, Texas 76834 or the James Hopper Memorial Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 1001, Abilene, Texas 79604.

Pallbearers will be Leslie Fambrough, David Fambrough, Wayne Roberts, Milford Roberts, Robert Talley and Bob Tal.

RUBY R. WILKINS, age 69, of Rising Star and formerly of Coleman and Bangs died Monday, October 29, 2001, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2001 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Ford officiating. Burial will follow in the Cleveland cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilkins was born March 13, 1932 in Forman, Arkansas, a daughter of Tollie Bryan Chaffin and Hattie Abigail Deall Chaffin. She was raised and attended school in Amarillo. She married Albert Wilkins on September 18, 1948 in Amarillo. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Wilkins of Rising Star; two sons, Albert Dewayne Wilkins of Bangs, Darrell Wade Wilkins of Goldthwaite; two daughters, Rita Fay Rosalez of Coleman, Wanda Sue Eaton of Paris, Texas; one brother, Leroy Chaffin of Paris, Texas; two sisters, Alta May Green and Juanetta Stewart both of Horatio, Arkansas; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Eugene Chaffin and one sister, Loretta Johnson.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, 2001 at the funeral home.

LEAH NOWELL, age 78, of Coleman, died Wednesday (June 6, 2001) at her residence. Graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Fort Worth with her son-in-law, Darrel Hohmann, officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nowell was born December 16, 1922 in Grand Prairie, Texas and was a daughter of Walter Shelton Cunningham and Marguerite Hattie Pearl Turck Cunningham. She grew up in Arlington and graduated from Arlington High School. On May 14, 1944 she married Hiram W. Nowell in Arlington and he preceded her in death. Along with her husband, she owned Hi-Leah Drill Service. She moved to Coleman in 1998 and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include three children, Michael Nowell of Azle, Texas, Ireanne Hohmann of Coleman and Walter Nowell of Greenville, Texas; two sisters, Evelyn Cole of Arlington and Lula Mae Mitchell of Ardmore, Oklahoma; one brother, Walter Cunningham of Beaumont, Texas; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be held this evening (Thursday) from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.

RAMONA JEAN MARCEE, age 43, of Brownwood, died at her residence in Brownwood. Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday (today) at 2:00 p.m. at Coleman City cemetery with Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mona was born July 3, 1957 and was the daughter of Kenneth James "Mickey" Smith and Sharon Jean Ashley. She grew up in Coleman and Santa Anna and attended school in Santa Anna. She was previously married to Steven Curtis Marcee. She moved to Brownwood six years ago and had been employed as a music purchasing agent for music stores. She was a Baptist and a member of The Walrus Club.

Survivors include one son, Travis Michael Marcee of Abilene; her mother, Sharon Jean Ashley of Brownwood; her father and step-mother, Kenneth James "Mickey" Smith and Gussie Smith of Coleman; one brother, Randy Wayne Smith of Austin; one sister, Amy Smith-Ward and husband Daryl of Brownwood; her grandmother, Christine Singleton on Snyder; half-brother, Bryan Raney of Laredo; one step-brother, Ronnie (and wife Karen) Aycox of Brownwood; niece and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Marty Smith.

RANDY SMITH, age 20, of Coleman, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at San Angelo Community Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Elm Street Church of Christ with Jeff Robinett officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Randy was born October 6, 1980 in Brownwood, Texas and was the son of Sherman Smith and Tammy Baugh Smith. He grew up in Coleman and attended school here.

Survivors include his parents, Sherman and Tammy Smith of Coleman; one brother, Rick Smith of Del Rio, Texas; one niece, Ivie Shay Smith of Coleman; grandparents, Johnny and Melba Baugh of Coleman; great-grandmother, Virgie Baugh of Abilene; aunts and uncles, Dean and Patricia Constable of Midland, Darrell and Wanda Hunter of Burkett, Robert and Clarice Trammell of Midland, Tim and Dena Baugh of Midland, Terry and Penne Baugh of Breckenridge and John and Tina Hensley of Coleman; numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clarence and Bobbie Smith.

Memorials may be made to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605.

Family visitation will be held Thursday from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

ANDREW JOHN (A. J.) KIGHT, age 15, of Coleman died Sunday (June 17, 2001) at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Friday (June 22, 2001) at Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Mike McBride and Rev. Gene Kreig officiating, assisted by Rev. Don Northway and Rev. Ernie Kight. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

A.J. was born November 21, 1985 in Hutchinson, Kansas, a son of John David Kight and Teresa Ann Northway Kight. He was raised in Abilene and attended schools in Abilene and Coleman. He sang in the Junior High Honors Choir and played football. He moved to Coleman a year ago and was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Coleman.

A.J. is survived by his parents, John and Teresa Kight of Coleman; two brothers, Jason and Johnathon Kight of Coleman; one sister, Krystal Kight of Coleman; grandparents, Rev. Don and Myrt Northway of Coleman and Rev. Ernie and Carolyn Kight of Abilene; great-grandparents, George and Annabelle Schmitz of Iola, Kansas and Cecil and Lila Beeson of East Prairie, Missouri; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Family visitation will be Thursday evening (June 21, 2001) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers will be J.W. Vaughn, Kenji Ouchi, Michael Ouchi, Brandon French, Brandon Bouldin and Aaron Dobbins.

JOE STANLEY BLACKWELL, age 71, former Coleman resident, died Sunday (June 24, 2001) at a Bryan hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Elwin Collum officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. Blackwell was born September 18, 1929 in Rockwood, Texas and was a son of the late E. B. and Roberta Lee Fuqua Blackwell. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School. He attended Tarleton, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education from Texas A&M and received his Master of Education degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He served in the U. S. Army in Korea. On March 22, 1957, he married Patsy Scarborough in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He taught school in Coleman, Cloudcroft, NM, Mozelle, Anson, Winters and Coahoma. In 1995, he moved to Bryan, Texas where he was residing at the time of his death. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Bryan and also been a member of the Lion’s Club, Gideon’s International, a long-time member of the Appaloosa Horse Club and was instrumental in establishing the Junior Rodeo in Coleman. While living in Coleman, he was also an active member of the Breeder Feeder and, in Winters, was a member of the Young Farmers of America.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Blackwell of Bryan, Texas; one son, James Lynn Blackwell and wife Lauris of Austin; one daughter, Renee Blackwell of Bryan; one brother, James Burton Blackwell and wife Louise of Tulsa, Oklahoma; father-in-law, T. L. Scarborough of Coleman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy and Faye Scarborough of Buckeye, AZ; seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty June Ferguson and Joy Beth Emmer and by a brother-in-law, Ted Emmer.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Joseph’s Foundation in Bryan, Texas.

Family visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bill Stephenson, Bill Sneed, Marvin Dozier, Tommy Jamison, Leonard Ehrler and Jimmy Hemphill.

Honorary pallbearers will be Roy McCorkle, Jay Briggs, Olan Holtz, Bill Clifford, Fred Cross, Charles Williams, Don Norton, Stayton Delleny, Grady Joe Harrison, Roland Beal, James Laird, Mark Griffis, James Hargett, Mayo Marrs, John Walthall, J. L. Gandy, Sam Braswell, David Watson and Bob Russ.

VELMA HELTON, age 87, of Coleman, died Wednesday (June 27, 2001) at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Helton was born June 28, 1914 in Rockwood, Texas and was the daughter of the late George Henry Dunn and Sarah Shamblin Dunn. She grew up in Shields and attended school there. On December 7, 1935 she married Bailey Helton in Coleman and he preceded her in death on April 10, 1993. She lived in Cross Roads for a number of years and moved to Coleman in the 1950’s. She was a clerk at J. C. Penney’s and later at Grammer’s. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Rondald and Sandra Helton of Austin, Texas and Gale and Linda Helton of Covington, Louisiana; one sister, Doris Tillman of Coleman; three brothers, Rev. Raymond Dunn and Berlie Dunn both of Midland, Texas and George Henry Dunn of Grand Prairie, Texas; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 3113 Oldham Lane, Abilene, Texas 79602 or Holiday Hill Nursing Home, 245 State Highway 153, Coleman, Texas 76834.

Family visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
