Mary Augusta ‘Gussie’ Boone Watson
Mary Augusta "Gussie" Boone Watson, 97, of Junction, departed her earthly life Thursday, February 20, 2003, in Kimble Hospital. She had sustained a broken hip in a January 30 accident at her ranch home and underwent surgery in the Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg prior to transferring to the local medical facility.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 22, at the Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Monte Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Junction cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Graham Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Bennett Boone, Bubba Boone, Mike Graham, John Graham, Tim Graham and Pat Graham.
Gussie was born December 18, 1905, to John William and Mary Talburt Boone at the family's original homeplace near Telegraph, where the Boones had established a ranch when they moved to Kimble County a century ago. Soon thereafter, the family bought and moved to another nearby ranch location, where Gussie was still maintaining a home at the time of her death.
She and some of her siblings received their early education at the Evergreen School, walking two miles to and from class each day. The parents later purchased a home in town adjacent to the school grounds to provide their children with a higher education, but the summer months were spent on the ranch. When Gussie graduated as valedictorian in 1923, one of her classmates was the late Congressman O.C. Fisher.
Early in life, Gussie set her goal to become a teacher, and her career in that field was to span more than forty-five years. She touched many lives during that time, as countless students benefited from her knowledge and expertise. She received a teaching certificate, and her first position was in the fall of 1923 at the new Deats School in Edwards County, where she boarded in the home of Josh and Daisy Deats. The Paint Creek School, sometimes known as the County Line School, had disbanded that same year, and its successor - the Deats - was established further upstream on the South Llano River.
In the ensuing years, Gussie attended Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton and subsequently received a bachelor's degree at West Texas College in Canyon. She was to further her education by attaining a master's degree in education at the University of Texas. Later, she received a second master's - one in Library Science - from UT.
Gussie taught in Junction, Newcastle in Young County, and at other schools. She retired at Iraan in 1971 and returned to Kimble County.
In 1935, before the advent of the local bus system, she commuted from the ranch into Junction each day to teach. Her pickup was equipped with improvised seats and cloth windows for the back of the truck, and under the auspices of the Evergreen District, she provided transportation in her converted "bus" for rural students enroute to the town school.
At Goldsmith, in Ector County, Gussie served as the school's principal. In later years, when she again returned to Junction for a repeat assignment, she was the elementary principal.
She married Ray D. Watson of Young County, and they became the parents of one daughter, Janis Raye.
Gussie was an Episcopalian and a longtime member of both Delta Kappa Gamma and the Highland Study Club. As a volunteer for the Kimble County Library, her knowledge was a significant asset for that facility in the 1970's when a move was made to the present library building. At that time, a modernized card filing system was instituted under her supervision. In 1998, while observing the 75th anniversary of her graduation from Junction High School, she and another surviving member of the class, Velma Dutton, served as Grand Marshals of the Hill Country Fair Associations annual parade.
Throughout the years, Gussie maintained an avid interest in the lives of her former students, rejoicing in their accomplishments and empathizing in their disappointments. Her retirement years were a special time for Gussie as she continued to ranch on part of the Boone homeplace on her beloved South Llano River. One of her favorite past times until recent weeks was tending her flock of chickens.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers - Jack, Llano, Debs, Richard and Floyd W. Boone.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Jerry Kirby of Junction; two granddaughters, Kim Kirby Golson and her husband, Randy, of Midland; Kara Kirby Wood and her husband, Rick, of Midland; three great-grandsons; three sisters, Flossie McLendon of Manford, Oklahoma, Tempa "Tempie" Reynolds of Junction and Maude Graham and her husband, Callan, also of Junction; nieces, nephews, many former students and a host of other friends. She will be missed by the many who knew and loved her.
