C. Bryce Thomas, M.D.
1934 - 2007

C. Bryce Thomas, M.D., of Jasper, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2007, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. A native of San Augustine, TX he had graduated from Texas A & M University and from University of Texas Medical School in Galveston on May 27, 1960. Dr. Thomas was a very caring man who dedicated his life to medicine and was a team doctor in Jasper for over 20 years. He also enjoyed woodworking and spending time on his farm with his wife and grandchildren. According to his wishes, private funeral services were held on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at the Thomas Cemetery on his farm. The public is encouraged to sign a memorial book at Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Jasper from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. on Monday, October 22, 2007. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, DuAnne Thomas of Jasper, Texas; Sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Renee Thomas of Jasper, Texas, and Ron and Karen Dupre of Houston, Texas; Daughter and son-in-law, Candace and Doug Hughes of Colmesneil, Texas; Grandchildren, Christopher and Jacob Thomas and Thomas and Conner Hughes. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be directed toward the Jasper Public Library, 175 Water St. Jasper, TX 75951 or toward the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

James Horne

James Horne, 83, of Brookeland, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church with interment to follow at Magnolia Springs Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Shultz Funeral Home in Jasper.

James was born on August 11, 1936 in Huntsville, Texas, he was a resident of Pasadena and had been a resident of Brookeland since 1980. A Veteran, he served his country in the United States Navy and worked for Souhwestern Bell as a PBX Installer. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Betty Horne of Brookeland; sons Curtis R. Horne of Brookeland and James Allen Smith of Brookeland; a daughter Rebecca Cunningham of Kountze; grandchildren Amanda, Tisha, Ashlyn, Chris, Alan, Derek, April, Josh, and Brittany and 22 great-grandchildren.

Erma Grace Anderson

After slightly more than 99 years, we emotionally announce that Erma Grace Anderson, on August 2, 2020 has completed her lengthy journey on earth and began her new life in heaven. She left us while sleeping peacefully at her residence in Woodville, Texas.

Born in 1921, Erma lived an amazing and interesting life as a true Renaissance Woman. She was a child of the Great Depression who persevered to gain a degree in watch and clock repair from the Houston Technical School, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, Minor in Music, and a Master’s in Education from Lamar University. She was a long-time business owner of Jasper Jewelry, as well a recognized educator in the Kirbyville School District. She was also an amateur pilot, a great cook, and a lover of art and music. She was a dedicated Christian and friend to countless numbers of people. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Eula Anderson as well as her three brothers, Tommy, Robert and Elmer Anderson. She leaves behind a sister-in-law Billie Anderson, an array of nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends who will miss her tremendously.

Erma specifically wanted to thank the management and staff of the Orchard Assisted Living in Woodville, TX, particularly the Paper Pusher, The Hoot and the Clean Freak who embraced her into their lives and became dedicated members of the Erma Grace Fan Club. The family would also like to thank the Olive Branch Hospice for their dedication and devotion to Erma and the family members during her last days and a thank you to her dear friend Liz Weaver.

Mikie Simmons

Mikie Simmons, 68, of Call, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2020 at his home. Private Celebration of Life Services were held and a public service will be held at a later date.

Mikie was born on December 30, 1951 to Raymond & Martha Simmons in Jasper. He was a life-long resident of Call and was a member of Call Junction Baptist Church. He worked for Seafarer's International Union as a Seaman. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Renie Simmons of Call; son Will Simmons Jr. & wife Tracie of Call; sisters-in-law Laura Simmons of Vidor, Cahy Simmons of Maryland and Etta Faye Simmons of Kirbyville; as well as grandchildren Paige Simmons and Jordan Montes with one great grandchild on the way.

Gloria Bowling

Gloria Jean Young Bowling, 74, of Jasper, passed away on Thursday, July 23, 2020 surrounded by her loved ones. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday evening, July 25, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. at Shultz Funeral Home. The family will greet friends on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until service time.

A native of San Antonio, Gloria was born on February 21, 1946 to Thomas & Dorothy Runnells Young. She was a 1964 graduate of Devine High School in Devine, Texas, where she met her high school sweetheart and husband Bill Bowling. They married on June 5, 1965. Moving to Jasper in 1974, she worked for State Farm Insurance for 45 years. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bill Bowling of Jasper; daughter Kim Bertrand & husband Glenn of Jasper; son Jeff Bowling & wife Kimberly of Spurger; sister Nancy Bourcier & husband Mike of Tehachapi, California; brother Richard Young of El Campo, Texas; cousin Mary Lou Brennan of Tyrone, Georgia; a soul sister Lanell Smith & husband Dan of Jasper; a sister-in-law Rebecca Pape of Alpine, Texas; grandchildren Jessica Cooper & husband D.J., William Treadway & wife Morgan, Matthew Treadway, Westen Bertrand, Montana Cooley, Cheyenne Cooley, Braxton Bowling,and Kayleigh Bowling; and great grandchildren Kamden Cooper, Kayden Cooper, Konnor Cooper & Ella Treadway. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, Tennessee 37214.

Ruth Gill

Ruth Burney (Smith) Gill, 91, of Jasper, passed away on July 22, 2020. A visitation will be held on Friday July 24th from 5-7 pm at the Shultz Funeral Home in Jasper followed by a Celebration of Life Service to be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday July 25th at First Baptist Church in Jasper.

She was born August 14th, 1928 in Rockdale, Texas as the first child of farmers, Edwin Basil Smith and Mabel Zelma (Burney) Smith. She graduated from Hearne High School in 1945 and although she held many different job titles through the years such as telephone switch board operator, office manager, and business owner, her proudest job titles were that of Wife, Mother and Grandmother.

Ruth loved gardening, sewing, crafting, and experimenting with new recipes. She was always very active in church whether it was teaching Sunday School or leading Vacation Bible School, she served the Lord in any way she could. She had been a member of First Baptist Church Jasper for the past 14 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Myron Alenzo Gill, sons, David Gill and Jerry Gill, daughter Wanda Morgan and granddaughter Eva Key. She is survived by her daughter Pat and husband Bobby Lockhart of College Station, Texas; son-in-law Joe Morgan of Magnolia Springs, Texas; daughter Patti and husband Jackie Norsworthy of Magnolia Springs; son Dwayne Gill of Kirbyville Texas; daughter Robbie and husband Wade Peek of Magnolia Springs; daughter Gale and husband Mackey Willis of DeRidder, Louisiana; and son Brian and wife Kimberley Gill of Jasper, Texas along with twenty four grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her Sister, Mary Sue Attaway of Mabank, Texas and brother, Edwin Barkley Smith and wife Frances of Houston, Texas.

Lawrence Hopkins

Larry "Hoppy" Hopkins, 85, of Jasper, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at his residence. Private Celebration of Life Services were held, and a public Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

A native of Blakesburg, Iowa, Larry was born on September 8, 1934 to Frances & Clara Hopkins. He moved from Forsythe, Missouri in December of 2017 to Jasper, Texas. Owner of Hoppy's Machine Shop in Houston, he was a tool and die man. A charismatic salesman, he could sell anything to anyone, whether they needed it or not. He enjoyed fishing, making jewelry, shopping and having garage sales. He also served in the United States Army where his job was a meteorologist. He is survived by his wife, whom he married on July 15, 1994 in Caldwell, Texas, Kim Hopkins of Jasper; son Lee Hopkins of Waxahachie; daughter LeAnne Bennie & husband James of Dallas; sister Rose Myers of Jasper; as well as grandchildren Alan & Alaina. He is preceded in death by a son Larry Hopkins and a daughter Linda Owens.

John Stansill

John Stansill, 78, of Sam Rayburn, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2020. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Jasper County Cowboy Church with a reception to follow.

A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, John was born on November 12, 1941 to James & Lucille Stansill. A resident of Corpus Christi, he moved to Sam Rayburn Lake in the fall of 2011. John happily retired in 2013 so he could enjoy life. He loved to fish, play on his John Deere zero turn lawnmower and take his two terriers, Mickey and Addylaide on daily drives. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myra Stansill of Sam Rayburn; sons Dennis Ray Stansill of Corpus Christi and Eddie Grant of Corpus Christi; niece Tina Simmons of Houston; grandchildren Jonathan, Kelli & Beth; as well as great-grandchildren J.J., Clyde, Ashlyn & Apollo. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Jasper County Cowboy Church, 2200 W. Gibson St. Jasper, Texas 75951 or to a charity of your choice.
