Vernon D. Phillips

CROSS PLAINS - Vernon D. Phillips, 66, died Wednesday in an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, in the Rising Star Church of Christ with Jim Nash and Richard Massey officiating. Burial will be in the Pioneer Cemetery, directed by Higginbotham Funeral Home of Cross Plains.

Mr. Phillips was born in Eastland County. He married Glenda Boyd on Jan. 2, 1955 in Owens. He was a farmer and a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of Cross Plains; three sons, Glen Dale Phillips of Alpine, and Howard Phillips and Allen Phillips both of Cross Plains; two brothers, Homer Phillips Jr. of Stephenville and Bobby Phillips of Eldorado; and two sisters, Minnie Roberts of Copperas Cove and Nancy Wolf of Midland.

Visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, July 9, at the funeral home.

Iva B. Crowder

BROWNWOOD - Iva B. Crowder, 85, died Sunday in Carmel, Ind.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, in the Early Church of Christ with Donny Carroll officiating. Burial will be in Ebony Cemetery in Mills County, directed by Heartland Funeral Home.

Mrs. Crowder was born in Fort Scott, Kan. and had lived in Brownwood since 1975, having moved there from San Antonio. She was the widow of Truman Crowder, whom she married in Las Vegas, Nev. in 1943. She had worked in the garment industry and was a member of the Early Church of Christ.

Survivors include four sons, Clayton Whalley of Regency, Lester Whalley of Torrance, Calif., James Crowder of San Angelo, and Lawrence Crowder of Thornton, Calif.; two daughters, Iris Andrews of Ammon, Jordan and Sharon Stokes of Carmel, Ind.; one sister, Ruth Marks of Eugene, Ore.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Buford 'B.B.' Lee

COLORADO CITY - Buford "B.B." Lee, 88 died Tuesday at his residence.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, in the Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel in Colorado City with Dr. Ted Spear and the Rev. Glenn Roenfeldt officiating.

Mr. Lee was born in Mitchell County where he was a lifelong resident. He married Annie Mae Smith on May 24, 1935 in Roscoe. He was retired from the U.S. Soil Conservation Service and was a farmer. He was a member of the Colorado City First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of Colorado City; two daughters, Annette Chesser of Snyder and Janie Harris of Bryan; one sister, Wilma Hudgins of Colorado City; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Leona Hogan

ABILENE - Leona Hogan, long time Merkel resident, died Wednesday in a local care center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, at the Merkel First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Greg Kennedy and Derm Thiel officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.

Mrs. Hogan was born in Merkel where she attended school. She was the widow of F.T. "June" Hogan Jr., whom she married on Feb. 14, 1937 in Sweetwater. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Methodist Women Quilters. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include three daughters, Jackie Alexander of Bullard, Sandy Beasley of Abilene, and Wendy Motley of Merkel; one sister, Zada Bird of Merkel; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Windcrest Alzheimer's Care Center, 6050 Hospital Drive, Abilene, TX 79606 or the donor's favorite charity.

Betty Jo Butler

CISCO - Betty Jo Butler, 62, died Tuesday in an Abilene hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9, at the Wayside Cemetery with Larry Fitzgerald officiating, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home of Cisco.

Mrs. Butler was born in Weinert. She married James Butler on June 4, 1956 in Cisco. She was a homemaker and a member of the I-20 Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband of Cisco; three sons, James Richard Butler of Cisco, Billy Joe Butler of Abilene, and David Wayne Butler of College Station; two sisters, Mary Lou Yates of Cisco and Glenda Faye Gartman of Baird; and three brothers, W.R. Alexander of Benbrook, Willie Earl Alexander of Fort Worth, and Charles Ray Alexander of Cisco.

Willie ‘May’ Ellerd

Willie “May” Ellerd, 65, died Thursday in a local hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at the Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy. 277 South with the Rev. Jim Reid officiating. Burial will be in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories.

Mrs. Ellerd was born in Delhi and attended school in Aspermont and Hamlin. She moved to Abilene in 1969. She had worked for Timex Corporation and Texas Instrument before retiring in 1984. She married James Warren Ellerd on Feb. 10, 1973 in Abilene. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband of Abilene; two daughters, Sherry Pritchard and Charlotte Bruns, both of Abilene; one stepson, David Ellerd III of Corpus Christi; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Taylor-Jones Humane Society, 3811 N. 1st St. Abilene, TX 79603.

Thomas T. ‘Papa Ted’ Rives

Thomas T. “Papa Ted” Rives, 70, longtime resident of Abilene, died Wednesday in a local hospital.

The body will be cremated and graveside services will follow at a later date. Arrangements were by Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South.

Mr. Rives was born in Merkel and attended school in Abilene. He attended Hardin-Simmons for two years and served in the U.S. Army for nine years, including a tour in Korea. He married Dona Lee Bryant in 1973 in Oklahoma. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1985, after 23 years’ service. He was a past Post Commander at VFW Post 6873 and was a member of the Military Order of the Cooties. He was past Seam Squirrel of Pup Tent 36 and Seam Squirrel of the Year for the state of Texas in 1998-99. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife of Abilene; six sons, Thomas Rives, Steven Bryant, and Paul Bryant, all of Abilene, Nolan Rives of Redlands, Calif., Coy Bryant of Merkel, and Jeff Bryant of Sweetwater; four daughters, Betty Tabor of Newalla, Okla., Carol Sentena of Richland Hills, Diana Notgrass of Clyde, and Joana Kilcrease of Abilene; one sister, Louise Pruitt of Georgia; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Emma Baitz Raphelt

STAMFORD — Emma Baitz Raphelt, 92, died Wednesday in a local nursing home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Sagerton Faith Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Old Glory Cemetery in Old Glory, directed by Kinney Funeral Home.

Mrs. Raphelt was born in LaGrange where she attended school. She moved to the Old Glory area in 1921. She was the widow of Fritz Baitz, whom she married on Dec. 21, 1926. She was also the widow of Herman Raphelt, whom she married in 1952. She worked as the cafeteria supervisor in the Old Glory School for six years. She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible school, sang in the choir, and held various offices in the Women’s Missionary League of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod where she was a lifelong member through the Zion Lutheran Church of Sagerton, the Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene, and the Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton. She was honored as the Lutheran Woman of the Year in 1971.

Survivors include five children, Dorothy Clark, Mae Stegemoeller, and Melvin Baitz, all of Sagerton, Ruby Olson of San Angelo, and Leslie Baitz of Leander; two stepchildren, Herman Raphelt Jr. of Lubbock and Lillie Mae Reed of Roby; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jolene ‘Dusty’ Hartsfield

FORT WORTH — Jolene “Dusty” Hartsfield, 68, died Tuesday.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Westcliff United Methodist Church with Dr. Ruth Huber and the Rev. Verne Fuqua officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Breckenridge Cemetery with the Rev. Butch Pesch officiating, directed by Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home of Fort Worth.

Mrs. Hartsfield was born in McCauley and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1947. She was the widow of Billy Hartsfield. She was a member of the Westcliff United Methodist Church, Woman’s Club of Fort Worth, Woman’s Forum of Breckenridge, Ladies Oriental Shrine, Daughters of the Nile, Ladies Without Shriners, Order of the Eastern Star, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include one daughter, Melinda Sparks of Austin; one son, Billy Echols of Caddo; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her mother, Lorene Harris of Abilene; and two brothers, Lester T. Harris of Austin and William E. Harris of Keller.

Andrew Paul ‘Red’ Townsend

BROWNWOOD — Andrew Paul “Red” Townsend, 81, died Wednesday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Greenleaf Cemetery with the Rev. John Beckling officiating, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mr. Townsend was born in Austin and lived in Brownwood in his early life where he graduated from Brownwood High School. He served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Brownwood in 1982 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Early.

Survivors include three sisters, Elizabeth Richardson of San Antonio, Leona Jacob of Yakima, Wash., and Dorothy Stacks of Brownwood; one brother, Louis Townsend of Woodbridge, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
