Lydia Smith
Lydia Smith, 87, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Elmwood Memorial Park with Harry Whitt officiating, directed by North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.
Mrs. Smith was born in Eastland, where she grew up. She married James Leonard Smith in 1927 in Eastland and was a homemaker. She moved to Knox City in 1947 and Abilene in 1972, and was a Baptist.
Survivors include four daughters, Mary Masters, Loretta Spinks and Betty Ary, all of Abilene, and Ella Mae Park of Odessa; three sons, J.P. Smith of Martin Springs, and T.L. Smith and J.L. Smith, both of Hamby; one sister, Agnes Wilson of Eastland; one brother, W.B. Greenwood of Munday; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Alfred Eberling
Alfred Eberling, 86, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Dr. Tim Temple officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be at 2:15 p.m. Friday in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
Mr. Eberling was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and attended school in Jamaica, N.Y. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked for Long Island Railroad and, later, for the New York City Subway Authority for many years before retiring. He moved to Abilene in 1976 from Freeport, N.Y., and owned and operated House of Alfred, a gift shop in Abilene for three years. He returned to New York before moving back to Abilene in 1994. He attended Abilene Bible Church.
Survivors include one sister, Katherine Loftin of Abilene; several nieces and nephews; and one great-nephew, Chad Chapman of Hamby.

Jay Alexander
CLYDE - Jay T. Alexander, 48, died Wednesday at his home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Bailey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. H.G. Barnard officiating.
Mr. Alexander was born in Knox City and graduated from Abilene High School. He married Darla Gibson in 1988 in Abilene and moved to Clyde in 1989 from Abilene. He worked as a truck driver for Joe South Trucking and was a life member of the Old Timers Association in Stamford.
Survivors include his wife, of Clyde; two sons, Robert Alexander of Abilene and Jeremiah Gibson of Clyde; four daughters, Louetta Cagle of Clyde, Nisha Alexander of Brownwood, and Jennifer Alexander and Jenean Alexander, both of Abilene; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Alexander of Abilene; two brothers, Mike Alexander and Dane Alexander, both of Abilene; one sister, Vicki Craig of Abilene; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Theresa Sue 'Terry' Marentes
COLEMAN - Theresa Sue "Terry" Marentes, 47, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
A prayer service will be at 8 p.m. today in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Lawrence Cyr officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.
Mrs. Marentes was born in Brownwood and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Abilene and Abilene Commercial College. She married Nick Marentes in 1973 in Abilene and moved to Coleman in 1992 from Abilene. She worked as a checker at the Shoppin' Basket and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Coleman; one son, Jeffrey Marentes of Coleman; one daughter, Kari Marentes of Coleman; her parents, John and Otila Gonzales of Abilene; one brother, James Gonzales of Denton; one niece and one nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Charlotte Craig
RUIDOSO, N.M. - Charlotte Craig, 55, formerly of Abilene, died Feb. 17 in a local hospital.
The body was cremated and cremains were disbursed on the Capitan Mountains in the Lincoln County National Forest. Arrangements were made by LaGrone Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Craig was born in Ruidoso and was a trustee of the village of Ruidoso Downs from 1991-96. She was mayor pro-tem from 1992-96, and was a volunteer at the Ruidoso Downs Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of Ruidoso Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Tony Craig of Ruidoso Downs; one son, Lester Hancock of Las Cruces, N.M.; two daughters, Norma Jean Pinkston of Ruidoso Downs and Dixie Morris of Abilene; two brothers, Ernest Burgess of Roswell, N.M., and Clifford Burgess of Baird; five sisters, Rachel McMenemy of Reseda, Calif., Dixie Burgess of Van Nuys, Calif., Geneva Weygandt and Mary Burgess, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Ima Jean Burgess of Ruidoso Downs; and nine grandchildren.

Samuel Eugene 'Gene' Gilder
COLEMAN - Samuel Eugene "Gene" Gilder, 80, died Tuesday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Richard Gilder and Reed Justus officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.
Mr. Gilder was born in Hill County and attended school in Coleman County. He was a longtime Coleman County resident and married Velma Hollon in 1935 in Coleman. He was a retired automotive garage owner and was a stock farmer. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, of Coleman; one son, Larry Gilder of Coleman; two daughters, Patsy Neal and Coleen Donica, both of Coleman; three brothers, Herman Gilder and Lee Gilder, both of De Leon, and Richard Gilder of Whitney; two sisters, Shirley Parker of Crowley and Christine Lawson of Edna; 10 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

George Lee Garrett
WINTERS - George Lee Garrett, 64, died Wednesday at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Winters First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff May and the Rev. Glenn Shoemake officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, directed by Winters Funeral Home.
Mr. Garrett was born in Ballinger and grew up in Fort Worth. He attended Southwest State and Texas Christian universities, and married Virginia LaRue Brown in 1963 in Tyler. He worked as a maintenance supervisor for the Texas Highway Department before retiring in 1986. He returned to Winters and was a Mason and Shriner. He also was a member of the Winters Lions Club, a motorcycle association, Order of Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Winters; one son, Neil Garrett of Moorepark, Calif.; one daughter, Elizabeth Lee Lee Garrett York of Weatherford; his mother, Lura Lee Garrett of Winters; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Martha Elizabeth Vaughn
COLORADO CITY - Martha Elizabeth Vaughn, 69, of Odessa, sister of two Colorado City residents, died Tuesday at her home.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Colorado City Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Burgess officiating, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Vaughn was born in Forman, Ariz., and married Paul Vaughn in 1951 in Oakland, Calif. She was a homemaker and moved to Odessa in 1972. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, of Odessa; one son, Jeffry Vaughn of Allen; one brother, Clyde Clevenger of Andrews; two sisters, Addie Swann and Bea Smith, both of Colorado City; and one grandchild.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite children's charity.

Inez Evers Brownlee
DE LEON - Inez Evers Brownlee, 81, secretary at the United Pentecostal Church for more than 50 years, died Wednesday in De Leon.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in United Pentecostal Church with Wayne Collins and Sam Koontz officiating. Burial will be in De Leon Cemetery, directed by Nowlin Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brownlee was born in Comanche County and was a lifelong De Leon resident. She married Cecil Brownlee in 1933 in De Leon and was a homemaker. She was a member of United Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include her husband, of De Leon; three sons, Dryl Brownlee and David Brownlee, both of De Leon, and Lyndon Brownlee of Brownwood; one sister, Hazel Ripley of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
