Jack Roberts Jr.

Jack O. Roberts Jr., 71, died Wednesday in a local hospital after a short illness.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Elmwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Rufus Wilson officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mr. Roberts was born in Manville, Ark., and moved to Texas in 1946. He married Patricia Flowers in 1947 and worked as a concrete and cement finisher before retiring several years ago.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one daughter, Alma Spencer of Abilene; two sons, Clif Roberts of Abilene and William Roberts of Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will be at 2133 Merchant.

Charles 'Chuck' Hall

Charles "Chuck" Hall, 67, died Tuesday at his home.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Round Mound Cemetery in Jones County with Waylan Jackson officiating, directed by Allen-Korzenewski Funeral Home, 1443 N. 2nd.

Mr. Hall was born in Smithville, Tenn., where he graduated from high school, and was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He moved to Abilene in 1978. He worked as the director of the Christian Alcohol Rehabilitation Program, now Serenity House, until 1983 and was operating Hall Auto Sales at the time of his death. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Makayla Hall of Abilene; one sister, Doris Barney of Panama City, Fla.; one brother, Bobby Hall of Watertown, Tenn.; and one nephew.

Roy Stone

Roy M. Stone, 88, died Wednesday in a local nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Elmwood Memorial Park with Dr. John Stevens and Mose McCook officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mr. Stone was born in Celina and graduated from Abilene High School, Abilene Christian College, now Abilene Christian University, and the University of Texas. He married Evelyn "Totsy" Campbell in 1931 and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a principal of Paschal and Arlington Heights high schools, both in Fort Worth, and, before retiring, was an assistant superintendent in charge of the high schools. He was an adult teacher at South Side Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one brother, Bob Stone; and one niece.

Memorials may be sent to Sears Methodist Center Benevolent Fund, 3202 S. Willis, Abilene 79605; or Christian Service Center, 901 Mesquite, Abilene 79601.

Juanita Middleton

LORENZO - Juanita E. Middleton, 91, mother of an Abilene resident, died Tuesday in an Abilene nursing home after an illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Ralls with Lee Henry officiating. Burial will be in Ralls Cemetery.

Mrs. Middleton was born in Stanton and was a homemaker. She lived most of her life in Dickens County near Afton and moved to Lorenzo in 1973 from Lubbock. She was a member of the Church of Christ and was the widow of Doyle O. Middleton, whom she married in 1923 in Roaring Springs.

Survivors include one daughter, Thressia Henry of Abilene; one brother, J.B. Greenwood Jr. of Hereford; one sister, Annie Henry Adams of Ralls; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Annelle 'Nellie' Peck Bowers

PECOS - Annelle "Nellie" Peck Bowers, 77, relative of an Abilene resident, died Tuesday in a Midland hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in St. Mark's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Charles McIntyre officiating. Burial will be in Balmorhea Cemetery in Balmorhea, Texas, directed by Pecos Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bowers was born in El Paso and lived in Fort Davis, Van Horn, and, for many years, in Pecos. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her husband, Forrest Bowers of Fort Davis; two sons, Charles Bowers of Pecos and David Bowers of San Antonio; one daughter, Marquita Wanslow of Round Rock; one sister, Ermine Hourigan of El Paso; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Anne (Bell) Pilgrim of Abilene.

Preble 'Nannie' Smith

JAYTON - Preble "Nannie" Smith, 98, died Wednesday in a local nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Jayton Baptist Church with the Revs. Glenn Shock and Truett Kuenstler officiating. Burial will be in Jayton Cemetery, directed by Campbell Funeral Home of Spur.

Mrs. Smith was born in Callahan County and attended school in Centerview. She attended Simmons College in Abilene and moved to Jayton in 1944 from Stonewall County. She was a homemaker. She was a Baptist and was the widow of Travis Smith, whom she married in 1925 in Plainview.

Survivors include two sons, Ray Smith of Jayton and Eldon Smith of Lubbock; two daughters, Louise Bybee of Lubbock and Marie Clayton of Anson; two brothers, Peyton Reese and Howard Reese, both of Littlefield; three sisters, Iva Rippstein, Lila Stokes and Viola McSwain, all of Plainview; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The body will be at the church starting at 10 a.m. Friday.

Martha Rohr Cloyd

BROWNWOOD - Martha Rohr Cloyd, 85, Brownwood school teacher for 41 years before retiring, died Monday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Greenleaf Cemetery with Dr. Norbert Peil officiating, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cloyd was born in Brownwood, where she was a lifelong resident, and graduated from Brownwood High School, Daniel Baker College and the University of Texas. She was a member of Brown County Retired Teachers Association and Union Presbyterian Church, and was the widow of Leon Clark Cloyd, whom she married in 1950 in Brownwood.

Survivors include two nieces, Wanda Rohr of Arvada, Colo., and Judith Ann Carlye of Mesquite; and several cousins.

Jerry Slemmons

CADDO - Jerry M. Slemmons, 56, died Wednesday at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Melton Funeral Home Chapel of Memories in Breckenridge with the Rev. Johnny Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Brad Cemetery.

Mr. Slemmons was born in Lubbock and was a longtime Caddo resident. He worked as a mechanic and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Slemmons Bruton of Newcastle; three sons, Ronnie M. Slemmons of Stephenville, Jerry Don Slemmons of Granbury and Terry Dean Slemmons of Mansfield; his mother, Grace Slemmons of Weatherford; one sister, Shirley Riebe of Weatherford; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity and left at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Vinora Beck Barron

Vinora Barron, 63, of Clyde, died Wednesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Clyde Church of Christ with Guy Orbinson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Anson, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mrs. Barron was born in Stephenville and was a homemaker. She was the widow of Joseph Beck, whom she married in 1955 in Breckenridge. She married James Barron in 1993 in Abilene and retired from Hallmark in 1996. She was an officer of the Big Country Apartment Association. She was a former member of Southern Hills Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school for several years in the pre-school department, and was a member of Clyde Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, of Clyde; one son, Sterling Beck of Abilene; three daughters, Pamela Prather of Roanoke, Sherri Lightfoot of Greeley, Colo., and Michelle Vandiver of Abilene; her father, John S. Freeman of Clyde; two brothers, Bill Freeman of Clyde and Sam Freeman of Denton Valley; two sisters, Johnnie Irene Hammett of San Saba and Mary Loy Hudnall of Odessa; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Christian Homes of Abilene, 242 Beech, Abilene 79601.
