Mattie Lucille Ward

COLEMAN - Mattie Lucille Ward, 87, died Saturday at an El Paso hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Coleman Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Hammonds officiating, directed by Stevens Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ward was born in Coleman County and lived in Coleman before moving to El Paso in 1954. She was a member of Grandview Baptist Church in El Paso. She was the widow of Henry Ward.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Ward and Jeffrey Ward, both of El Paso; one sister, Dorothy Ray of Abilene; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Grandview Baptist Church, 3331 Idalia Ave., El Paso 79930.

V.W. 'Dick' Cumby

TUSCOLA - V.W. "Dick" Cumby, 84, died Sunday at an Abilene care center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tuscola United Methodist Church with the Revs. James Martin, T.C. Melton and Scott Latham officiating. Burial will be in Rogers Cemetery, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home.

Mr. Cumby was born in Lawn and lived in the Rogers community before moving to Tuscola in 1948. He was a heavy equipment operator, most recently for Taylor County Precinct 3, where he retired in 1981. He was a stock farmer and a member of Tuscola United Methodist Church. He married Francis Jones in 1934 in Winters.

Survivors include his wife, of Tuscola; three sons, James Cumby of Abilene, Tommy Cumby of Ovalo and Jackie Cumby of Tecumseh; three daughters, Wilda Burnett and Brenda Smith, both of Tuscola, and Karen Yost of Ovalo; one sister, Flossie Smith of Abilene; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Rogers Cemetery Fund, c/o First State Bank, Tuscola 79562; Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory, Abilene 79601; or West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene 79605.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Denver Doug White

ANSON - Denver Doug White, 63, died Friday at a Fort Worth hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Anson Church of Christ with P.B. Middlebrook officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.

Mr. White was born in Anson and graduated from Anson High School in 1953. He was an Air Force and Navy veteran and worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Waukegen, Ill., retiring in 1991. He worked for M System grocery store after returning to Anson and was a member of Anson Church of Christ. He married Elizabeth White in 1977.

Survivors include his wife, of Anson; one daughter, Susan White Kelly of Des Moines, Iowa; one stepdaughter, Kim Dreamer of Grayslake, Ill.; two stepsons, Jon Sutter of Green Bay, Wis., and Joe Sutter of Kenosha, Wis.; one brother, Dennis White of Pearland; and four grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. today.

Mary Cathryn 'Kitty' Hammett

DALLAS - Mary Cathryn "Kitty" Hammett, 71, died Friday in Dallas.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at The Heights Baptist Church in Richardson with Dr. Sidney Spain and the Rev. C. Darrell Grice officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco, directed by Restland Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hammett was born in Cisco and was a member of The Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Allen Hammett; one son, John Hammett; one daughter, Sue Cangelosi; one brother, James Shepard; four grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.

Memorials may be made to Cisco Cemetery Association or The Heights Baptist Church.

Mary Elizabeth 'Liz' Smith

ASPERMONT - Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Smith, 77, died Saturday at a Lubbock hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Brazos Valley Cemetery, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith was born in Swenson and was a homemaker and a waitress. She was a Baptist. She married Dub Smith in 1943 in Peacock; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Camilla Serrano of Albuquerque, N.M., and Lesette Harrington of Bernalillo, N.M.; one son, Spencer Smith of Hermleigh; five brothers, Red Alls, Buddy Alls and Henry Alls, all of Clovis, N.M., John Alls of Amarillo and Sid Alls of Denver, Colo.; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Alvin Lloyd Chambers

SNYDER - Alvin Lloyd Chambers, 83, a longtime Snyder resident, died Saturday at a local nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Snyder Cemetery with Howard Jernigan officiating, directed by Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Mr. Chambers was born in Coryell County and had lived in Snyder since 1962. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for 41 years, retiring as section foreman. He was a member of Primitive Baptist Church. He married Lura Mae Hale in 1936 in Snyder.

Survivors include his wife, of Snyder; two daughters, Janet Nix of Snyder and Betty Norwood of Kermit; one son, Steve Chambers of Littlefield; one sister, Leone Wroten of Hemmitt, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Primitive Baptist Church, 2011 Avenue M, Snyder 79549; or the American Cancer Society, c/o West Texas State Bank, Snyder 79549.

Billy Allen Bryant Jr.

BROWNWOOD - Billy Allen Bryant Jr., 33, died Saturday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Chapel with the Rev. Mike Miles officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Park, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. Bryant was born in Smithville, N.C., and moved to Brownwood in 1993. He was employed by Brownwood State School and was a Baptist. He married Debra Jones in 1994 in Brownwood.

Survivors include his wife, of Brownwood; three sons, T.J. Hubbard and Joshua Hubbard, both of Brownwood, and Ethan Bryant of Wilsons Mills, N.C.; one daughter, Hanna Bryant of Wilsons Mills; his father, Billy Allen Bryant Sr. of Wilsons Mills; his mother and stepfather, Ann and Loftin Beasley of Four Oaks, N.C.; one sister, Lori Ann Bryant of Wilsons Mills; and a grandmother, Mattie Bryant of Wilsons Mills.

Mrs. Garland (Annie Mae) Powell

SANTA ANNA - Mrs. Garland (Annie Mae) Powell, 91, died Sunday at a Brownwood nursing home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mike Efird and Bobby Weathers officiating. Burial will be in Santa Anna Cemetery, directed by Henderson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Powell was born in Coleman County and attended Buffalo schools. She lived in Coleman County all her life and was a member of First United Methodist Church and a homemaker. She married Garland Newton Powell in 1923 in Bangs.

Survivors include her husband, of Brownwood; one daughter, Dorothy Burrell of Arlington; one son, Dorman Powell of Lamesa; two grandsons, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Santa Anna.

Sidney Wagner

SWEETWATER - Sidney W. Wagner, 77, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Joel McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Mr. Wagner was born in Mitchell County and had lived in Sweetwater since 1945. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was self-employed in construction. He was a past foreman for Sweetwater Ready Mix and was a Baptist. He married Hazel Green in 1945 in Sweetwater; she preceded him in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara King of Sweetwater; three brothers, Jack Wagner and Cliff Wagner, both of Colorado City, and Fred Wagner of Odessa; four sisters, Wanda Jameson of Silver, Amber Oden of Westbrooke, Una Goswick of Big Spring and Dorothy Rose of Lamesa; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
