Dorothy Cain

LAWN -- Dorothy Cain, 73, of Saginaw and formerly of Lawn, died Monday at her daughter's home in Saginaw.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Lawn Baptist Church with Jodie Boren officiating. Burial will be in Dewey Cemetery, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home of Tuscola.

Mrs. Cain was born in Cisco and attended school in Colorado City. She lived in Hobbs, N.M. before returning to Colorado City. She lived in Loraine and Abilene before moving to Lawn in 1980. She worked as a waitress at a truck stop in Colorado City, Henderson's Cafe in Loraine, and, for 13 years, Taylor's Cafe in Lawn. She was a member of Loraine Church of Christ and was the widow of W.D. "Boad" Cain, whom she married in 1943 in Colorado City.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia "Jenny" Thigpen of Saginaw and Kathy Pugh of Abilene; one son, Danny Cain of Anna; two sisters, Johnnie Mitchell of Hobbs, N.M., and Jessie Kennemur of Lawn; one brother, Edgar Hazelwood of Hobbs, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Holly Toler

DODGE CITY, Kan. -- Holly P. Toler, 59, brother of an Abilene resident, died Monday in a Wichita, Kan. hospital.

The body was cremated. A memorial service was held Wednesday in Dodge City First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dick Robbins and Dr. Mike Gardner officiating. Arrangements were made by Swaim Funeral Home.

Mr. Toler was born in Hamlin and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1960. He worked as a cattleman for many years and moved to Dodge City in 1979. He married Suzanne Martin in 1981 in Dodge City and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at SMU. He was a Stephen minister at First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Dodge City; one daughter, Emily Mecom of Houston; one sister, Suzanne Jones of Abilene; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene 79605; Salvation Army, 1726 Butternut, Abilene 79602; or a favorite charity.

Lola Sheppard

BIG SPRING -- Lola Sheppard, 88, died Monday in a local nursing home after a short illness.

A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. today in Big Spring First Baptist Church with Dr. Kenneth Patrick and the Rev. James Liggett officiating. Arrangements were made by Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Sheppard was born in Merkel and moved to Big Spring in 1939. She worked at Big Spring High School, Malone & Hogan Clinic and Cowper Hospital, and Nalley-Pickle & Welch and Myers & Smith Funeral homes. She sang in the Senior Choir at First Baptist Church and was the widow of W.J. "Bill" Sheppard Jr., whom she married in 1932 in Merkel.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Sheppard of Big Spring and Rodney Sheppard of Austin; one sister, Dorma Jay of Abilene; one brother, Lynn Shelton of Walla Walla, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Heritage Museum, 510 Scurry, Big Spring 79720; First Baptist Church, 705 Marcy, Big Spring 79720; St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1001 Goliad, Big Spring 79720; or a favorite charity.

Eunice Strickland

ROCHESTER -- Eunice Strickland, 99, died Wednesday in a Knox City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Faith Chapel Church with Kathryn Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery, directed by Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Strickland was born in Stonewall County and was a homemaker. She was a member of Foursquare Church and was the widow of W.L. Strickland.

Survivors include two sons, W.W. "Woody" Strickland of Abilene and Kenneth Strickland of Haskell; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Eddie Swagerty

BROWNWOOD -- Eddie Swagerty, 74, employed by the Brownwood Fire Department for 38 years until retiring as fire marshall, died Thursday in a local nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Chris Dibrell officiating. Burial will be in Bangs Cemetery, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. Swagerty was born in Portales, N.M., and moved to Brownwood in 1933. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps' Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II. He married Judy McClanahan in 1947 in Comanche and was a former officer of the Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Brownwood; two daughters, Sharon Konty of Hermiston, Ore., and Karen Earp of Abilene; one sister, Virginia Allen of New Braunfels; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Billy Ray 'Bill' Thompson

COLORADO CITY -- Billy Ray "Bill" Thompson, 64, lifelong local resident, died Wednesday in a San Angelo hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jake Chaney and Dr. Ted Spears officiating. Burial will be in Colorado City Cemetery.

Mr. Thompson was born in Colorado City and married Sandra Kay Watkins in 1959 in Las Cruces, N.M. He owned and operated Thompson's Body Shop and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, of Colorado City; two daughters, Paula Reed and Johnnie Kay Whatley, both of Corsicana; two sons, Ricky Thompson of Colorado City and Jimmy Thompson of Germany; seven grandchildren; one aunt; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Charles Reid

BROWNWOOD -- Charles L. Reid, 61, of Galveston and formerly of Brownwood, died Monday in a Galveston hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.J. Elkins officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery.

Mr. Reid was born in Brownwood, where he graduated from high school, and attended Howard Payne College. He lived in Odessa, Abilene and Houston before moving to Galveston in 1987 and was a retired diesel parts manager. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include one daughter, Charla Kay Lang of New Caney; one son, Steven Reid of Galveston; his mother, Mary Reid Fisher of Brownwood; one sister, Betty Reid Miller of San Antonio; four grandchildren; and one nephew.

Amador Benavides

HASKELL -- Amador Benavides, 59, mechanic at the Medford car dealership for 25 years, died Tuesday in an Abilene hospital.

A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today in St. George Catholic Church. Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Michael Melcher officiating. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery, directed by Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Benavides was born in Falfurrias and married Angelica Perez in 1957. He moved to Haskell in 1967 and was a member of St. George Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Haskell; four sons, Amador Benavides Jr. of San Angelo, Joe Benavides of Knox City, and Pablo Benavides and Hilbert Benavides, both of Haskell; three daughters, Elsa Rodriquez of Knox City, Zilda Tafolla of Denton and Emily Escobedo of Austin; three brothers, Gil Benavides and Jesse Benavides, both of Falfurrias, and Alex Benavides of Houston; one sister, Rufina Macias of Falfurrias; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Walter Cypert

THROCKMORTON -- Walter Cypert, 75, Throckmorton school teacher for 31 years until retiring in 1981, died Thursday at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Throckmorton First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ava Berry officiating. Burial will be in Throckmorton Cemetery, directed by Merriman-Archer Funeral Home.

Mr. Cypert was born in Hamlin and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He moved to Throckmorton in 1948 from Hamlin. He married Minta Sue Thompson in 1949 in Throckmorton and was a farmer and rancher. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Throckmorton; two sons, Chuck Cypert of Plano and Rick Cypert of Lincoln, Neb.; and one grandchild.

Memorials may be sent to Walter Cypert Scholarship Fund at Throckmorton First National Bank.

Altha Lakey Adcock

HAMLIN -- Altha Lakey Adcock, 85, died Thursday in an Anson hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Foster-Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Paige Baize officiating. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Adcock was born in Comanche and attended school in Olney. She worked as a beautician and lived in Sweetwater, Big Spring and Odessa before moving to McCaulley in 1976 and Anson in 1992. She was a member of Tuxedo Church of Christ and was the widow of Lindsey Adcock, whom she married in 1939 in McCaulley.

Survivors include one son, Lynn Adcock of Kingman, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
