GERALD L. McGREGOR
DANSVILLE - Gerald L. McGregor, 68, of 1 North Clinton St., died Wednesday (Aug. 20, 2003) unexpectedly at his home.
He was born in Hornell, July 28, 1935, a son of Lester and Avis Fisher McGregor. He had resided in the Troupsburg, Canisteo, Hornell and Dansville areas all his life. He had served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and had been employed as a sanitation worker for Kraft Foods in Avon for 20 years prior to his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the Arkport American Legion.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Matt Rose and Charles McGregor.
He is survived by four daughters, Laura (Donald) Black of Canaseraga, Patricia (David) Scouten of Hornell, Debra (Max Sanford) McGregor of Adrian and Melissa (Brian Lander) Pearl of Hornell; one stepdaughter, Mary (Gary) Howell of Maryland; four stepsons, James (Rosetta) Osmin of Arkport, Robert (Tracy) Osmin of Arkport, Kevin (Stephanie) Cady of Alfred and Michael (Janeen) Cady of Canisteo; one brother, George McGregor of Hornell; one sister, Ida; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell, on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-8 p.m., where funeral services will follow calling hours at 8 p.m., with Rev. Dudley Jenkins officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends wishing to remember Gerald are asked to make a contribution to their local Humane Society or local Food Pantry.

SPARTA - James F. Forrester, 88, of the Parker Hill Road, in Sparta, passed away Tuesday morning (Aug. 19, 2003) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, following a long illness.

ATLANTA - Todd A. Sawyer, 41, died unexpectedly Sunday (Aug. 17, 2003) at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester.

GENEVIEVE M. "GEN" GRISWOLD
HORNELL - Genevieve M. "Gen" Griswold, 71, of 47 Bennett St. passed away peacefully Saturday morning (Aug. 23, 2003) at her home, following a lengthy illness, surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren.
A native and life resident of Hornell, she was born April 23, 1932, and was the daughter of Stanley and Marie (LaLoire) Hall.
Genevieve was best known for many years as an outstanding seamstress who sewed many wedding gowns, band and cheerleading uniforms and performed general clothing alterations for the community. She crafted a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. But to her family, she was more than a sewer of clothes. She wove her amazing spirit, love and compassion for life into the lives of her family, church and community. She was happiest when giving and doing for others.
She was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1950) and later attended dietary school in Binghamton. She was a communicant of both St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann's Church where she had served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a dedicated rosary maker for the "Ten Million Rosaries" for the world project.
Gen had been employed as a cook at SKOEP, Mercycare and St. James Hospital and had also worked as a desk clerk at the Hornell YMCA.
She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter, whose talents supported local and youth organizations. Gen was known for her countless hours of volunteer work throughout the community, especially with Girl Scouts of America, Boy Scouts of America, Hornell YMCA and various church and youth activities. She, along with her husband, was instrumental in the formation of the Hornell Cinderella Softball League.
She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Ladies of Columbus, Women of Moose, and a former member of Hornell Zonta Club.
Gen was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Griswold; one sister, Bernadette Mullen and two brothers, Charles Hall and Stanley Hall.
She was married on Aug. 26, 1950 to Robert Griswold, who survives. Also surviving are six sons, Dr. Robert (Peggy) Griswold of Staten Island, Terence "Terry" (Carol) Griswold of Rochester, Thomas (Pam) Griswold of Sudbury, Mass., David (Joan) Griswold of Holmdel, N.J., Dr. John (Amelia) Griswold of Buffalo, and Chris (Jennifer) Griswold of Oakland, Calif.; six daughters, Linda (David) Holevinski of Hemlock, Marie (Chuck) VanHeusen of Fayetteville, N.C., Margaret (George) Nobilski of Rochester, Patricia (Bruce) Covert of Eden, Jackie (Shawn) Day of Hornell and Kathy (Mike) Congdon of Richmond Hill, Ga.; two sisters, Yvonne Youll of Batavia and Jackie (Bill) Hawkins of Leesburg, Fla.; 38 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was also "2nd Mother" of Kathleen (Oyer) Nash and Nora (Oyer) Casey.
The family of Genevieve M. "Gen" Griswold will receive friends Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St., Hornell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to either St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, to Southern Tier Hospice, 11751 East Corning Road, Corning, NY 14830 or to Catholic Daughters of America, C/O Peg Brewer, 65 Cedar Street, Hornell, NY 14843. RUTH L. FREELAND
HORNELL - Ruth L. Freeland, 80, of 7555 Airport Road, died unexpectedly at her home Thursday (Aug. 21, 2003).

PEGGY ANN LAYTON
WARD - Peggy Ann Layton passed away on Friday (Aug. 22, 2003).
At her request, there will be no prior visitation and the service will be at the convenience of the family.

HAROLD J. "PETE" COOPER JR.
AVOCA - Harold J. "Pete" Cooper, Jr., 78, of 4605 County Route 105, passed away Friday (Aug. 22, 2003) at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira.
Born in Avoca on Oct. 28, 1924, he was a son of the late Harold J. and Gladys Bates Cooper.
He attended Avoca School prior to being employed on the Olmstead Hill Farms with his father and brothers for more than 20 years.
Pete was employed by the Town of Avoca Highway Department for 20 years, before his retirement.
Since his retirement he enjoyed Sunday morning coffee at his home with his brothers and nephew. Pete also enjoyed doing woodworking projects for his family.
His family includes his wife of 57 years, Norma Mattoon Cooper; his daughters, Candace (Sandy) Hosier of Hammondsport and Jeanne (Robert) Fisher of Ashburn, Va.; his brothers, Bud (Dorothy) Cooper of Bath, Bob (Mary) Cooper, Dick (Marilyn) Cooper and Donny (Molly) Cooper, all of Avoca; his sisters, Betty "Tootie" (Bob) Fisher of Conesus, Bernie (Jim) Worden of Prattsburgh, Sally Hughes of Bath, Judy (Jerry) Zeh of Cohocton and Linda (Jeff) Gardener of Avoca; his brothers-in-law, Harold (Phyllis) Mattoon of Avoca, Don Mattoon of Florida, Gerald (Rosemary) Mattoon and Erwin Mattoon, both of Medina, and Larry (Janice) Mattoon of Florida; his aunt, Bernice Osborne of Atlanta, Ga.; also his many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Pete was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Lou Robords and Midge Rector.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Avoca Funeral Home (formerly Bond-Davis & Bishop Funeral Home), 22 N. Main St., Avoca. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Methodist Church with the Rev. Melanie Beardslee officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at Vale of Rest Cemetery, Avoca.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in Pete's memory to either the Wallace Methodist Church or to Corning Dialysis Unit, 8 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY 14830.
The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and doctors at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center and the Corning Dialysis Unit for nearly 11 years of care.

LUCILLE M. LaMONTE
DANSVILLE - Lucille M. LaMonte, 65, of Elizabeth Street passed away unexpectedly Friday morning (Aug. 22, 2003) at Rochester General Hospital.
She was born in Dansville on Jan. 23, 1938, a daughter of the late Gordon L. and Catherine A. Wallace LaMonte.
Lucille was formerly employed at Instructor Publications as an Editorial Secretary. She was a lifetime social member of the West Sparta Volunteer Fire Dept. and a former member of the Women of the Moose #607 of Dansville.
She is survived by her son, Thomas LaMonte of West Sparta; a daughter, Mary Price of Dansville; three sisters, Sandy (Walter) Gilman and Sharon (Charles) Cobb Jr., both of West Sparta and Joyce LaMonte of Jamestown; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service and reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, from 2-4 p.m. at the West Sparta Fire Hall.
Contributions in Lucille's memory may be made to the West Sparta Volunteer Fire Dept., 4451 Red School Rd., Dansville, NY 14437. Arrangements are by the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville.

WINIFRED M. JOHNSON
BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Winifred M. Johnson, 88, of Brooksville, Fla., died Wednesday (Aug. 20, 2003) at Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, Fla.
Born in Chasm Falls, she came moved to Brooksville, Fla., 22 years ago from Sarasota, Fla. She was a teacher, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma of New York and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Penny Barnes of St. Paul, Minn., and Faith Schaff-Brehm of Norfolk, Va.; a sister, Phyllis Hatch of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by the Merritt Funeral Home Brooksville Chapel, Florida.

RICHMOND, Va. - John S. Berry, 72, passed away Friday (Aug. 22, 2003).

JUDY A. RINALDO
PRATTSBURGH - Judy A. Rinaldo, 58, of 9685 Lynn Rd., passed away Saturday evening (Aug. 23, 2003) at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, after a long illness.
Born in Seattle, Wash., on May 29, 1945, she was a daughter of Joseph Peterson, who survives; and Gladys Morrill Peterson, who predeceased her. On July 6, 1963, she was married in Staten Island to George Rinaldo Jr., who predeceased her.
A former resident of Staten Island, where she attended school, Judy had resided in Prattsburgh for the past 10 years.
She was a homemaker and a loving and devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and sister. Judy enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Besides her father, Joseph Peterson of Corning, her family includes her seven daughters, Judiann (Gustavo) Paz of Staten Island, Neida (Juan) Vasquez of the Bronx, Joann Rinaldo of Bath, Joyce (Edward) Carvalho of Staten Island, Esther Rinaldo, Jennifer DuBois and Diana Rinaldo, all of Prattsburgh; her 12 grandchildren; her four sisters, Joyce (Edward) Nygren of St. Petersburgh, Fla.; Marie (Mike) McFarland and Marlene Green, all of Avoca; and Lisa Peterson of Corning; her five brothers, Roger (Virginia) Peterson of Hudson, Fla., Peter Spak of Avoca, James (Ann) Peterson of Pittsburgh, Pa., Brian (Angela) Peterson of Charlotte, N.C., and Ray Peterson of Corning; her aunt, Janet Brown of St. Petersburgh, Fla.; her uncle, Thomas Peterson of Toms River, N.J.; also her many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her mother and husband, Judy was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Peterson.
Calling hours are from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Avoca Funeral Home (formerly Bond-Davis & Bishop Funeral Home), 22 N. Main St., Avoca, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at noon Tuesday, with the Rev. Joanna Vessella officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

COREEN L. MILLIS
GENEVA - Coreen L. Millis, 72, of 18117 Doral Dr., Ft. Myers, Fla., formerly of Geneva and Auburn, died Friday (Aug. 22, 2003) at Hospice House, Ft. Myers, Fla.
Coreen was born in Hornell, the daughter of the late Jack and Asastasia (Haddock) Mahoney. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Richard, in 1996.
She spent the last 27 years of her life in sobriety, with the help of her friends and family and Alcoholics Anonymous.
She was employed as a counselor at Taylor Brown Hospital and C.H.A.D. of Auburn, retiring in 1996. During this time she was NYFAC counselor of the year in 1993, and selected citizen of the year in 1996 by the Citizen newspaper in Auburn. She also was involved in the Girl Scouts of America.
She is survived by her son, Gregory (Tracy) Millis of Ft. Myers, Fla.; her daughter, Rebecca Field of Olean; one sister, Betty (John) O'Donnell; two brothers, Richard (Dottie) Mahoney of Toledo, Ohio, and Francis (Noreen) Mahoney of Hornell; three grandsons, Jason Millis of Ft. Myers, Fla., Damion Millis of Oswego and Marcus Field of Olean; two great-granddaughters, Brittany Millis of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Kaitlin Field of Olean; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Jack (Aileen) Mahoney of Hornell.
Friends may call at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva, Wednesday (Aug. 27) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Aug. 28) in the funeral home. Ruth Page Pastoral Assistant for the Roman Catholic Community of Geneva, will officiate. Burial will be in Sandhill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice House, Ft. Myers, Fla., or the American Cancer Society, or a charity of one's choice.

ROBERT ROLAND "SHINNY" SHINEBARGER
LAKEVILLE/NAPLES, Fla. - Robert Roland "Shinny" Shinebarger, 81, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 2003) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. Bob, formerly of Hornell, had been residing with his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Shirley, in Naples, Fla., and Conesus Lake.

ISABELLE M. DIBBLE
CANISTEO - Isabelle M. Dibble, 83, of 1 Russell St., entered into rest shortly after arrival at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell on Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2003).
She was born June 6, 1920, in Hartsville, a daughter of Frank and Delighta King Keough. She was married June 21, 1938, in Canisteo, to Stanley Eugene Dibble, who died in 1981. She was also predeceased by two sons, Darwin James Dibble in 1948, and Robert Eugene Dibble in 2003.
She had lived in the Hartsville and Canisteo area all of her life, where she had been a homemaker. She was the greatest grandmother anyone could ever want. Her family always came first and she always made sure that they had life's needs.
Her family includes two sons, Nelson (Sharon) Dibble of Hornell and Ronald (Yvonne) Dibble of Canisteo; three daughters, Connie (David) Carl, Jan (Gene) Davis, Shirley (Edward) Abbott, all of Hornell; her sister, Louise (Carlton) Howard of Canisteo; her brother, Oliver (Goldie) Keough of Horseheads; 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo, where a funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Tony Ross, Pastor of the Adrian Freewill Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hartsville Center Cemetery, Hartsville.

CLAYTON E. MARLATT
CANISTEO - Clayton E. Marlatt, 74, of State Route 36, Canisteo, entered into rest shortly after arrival at the St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell on Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2003) after being stricken at home.
Clayton was born in Jasper on Aug. 23, 1929, the son of Elwin and Rachel Birchard Marlatt. He married Sheila Butler in Canisteo on Jan. 16, 1954, who survives. He was predeceased by his father, Elwin "Mike" Marlatt in Feb. of 1991; and a granddaughter, Tasha Carson.
Clayton lived all of his life in the Canisteo area. He was a graduate of Canisteo Central School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He had worked as a maintenance man for Stern & Stern Textiles of Hornell until his retirement. He was an avid hunter, race car fan and loved to bowl. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Clayton enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports throughout the years.
In addition to his wife, Sheila, he is survived by his son, Rich Marlatt (Jennifer Bailey) of Canisteo; his daughter, Michaeleen (Don) McCaig of Woodhull; his daughter-in-law, Sheila M. Marlatt of Canisteo; his mother, Rachel Marlatt of Canisteo; two brothers, Charles (Shirley) Marlatt of Canisteo and Donald (Carol) Marlatt of Hornell; five grandchildren, Brett and Julie Marlatt of Canisteo, Kyle and Jeremy Carson and Rachel Raish of Woodhull; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo, where a funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Carl Chamberlain, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Canisteo, officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.

MARION AHREM
HORNELL - Marion Ahrem, 59, of 109 Hill St., passed away Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2003) peacefully at home.
Born in Queens, Jan. 24, 1944, the daughter of William and Helen Clifford, she had resided in Hornell since June of this year. Marion had lived in Long Island all her life.
She was predeceased by her brother, William Clifford.
She is survived by one daughter, Debra Ahrem (Patrick Brown) of Hornell; two sons, Thomas (Rachael) O'Connor of Florida and Timothy O'Connor of Florida; two sisters, Geraldine Wiezel of Seaford and Elizabeth Fisher of Mastic; two brothers, Peter Clifford and Roy Clifford of Mastic; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will be present today from 2-4 p.m. at the Bender-Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 354 Canisteo St., Hornell, where funeral services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 4 p.m., Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

JOHN S. BERRY
RICHMOND, Va. - John S. Berry, 72, passed away Friday (Aug. 22, 2003).
He is survived by his former wife, Mimi Berry of Richmond, Va., his five children, John Berry Jr. of Jupiter, Fla., Matthew Berry of Orlando, Fla., Sheila Jones of Richmond, Va., Linda Kharrazian of San Diego, Calif., and Luke Berry of Richmond, Va.; his mother, Margaret Berry of Hornell; four grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Karen L. Berry of Hornell.
He was predeceased by his father, Paul S. Berry; and his brother, James E. Berry Sr.
His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., Richmond, Va., where his funeral services were handled.

RAYMOND L. WISE
ARKPORT - Raymond L. Wise, 62, of 23 Oak Hill St., Arkport, died Wednesday (Aug. 27, 2003) at Highland Hospital, Rochester, after a short illness.
Born Sept. 3, 1940, in Hornell, he was the son of Lloyd and Esther Smith Wise. He was married July 31, 1971, in Arkport to Linda E. Thomas, who survives. Besides his parents, Ray was predeceased by two brothers, Paul and Roy Wise.
He had resided all of his life in the Hornell-Arkport area. A heavy equipment operator, he was employed by Steuben County Highway Department in Bath for 30 years and also had been an auctioneer since 1982. An avid hunter and motorcyclist, Ray was a member of the HOG and Fingerlakes Chapter of ABATE. He was also a member of Hornell Lodge #210 LOOM.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Tina (Ron) Mefs and Robin (Gilbert) Colunga, both of Auburn, Ga.; Vicki Abernathy, Oklahoma City, Okla.; Hope (Robert) George, Newborn, Ga.; a son, Timothy (Cindy) Clanton, Buford, Ga.; a sister, Judy (John) Vinciguerra, Livonia; five brothers, Lester (Alice) Wise, Nunda; Kenneth (Maryann) Wise, Dalton; David (Luella) Wise, Dalton; Jack Wise, Arkport; William Wise, Hornell; 11 grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, with Rev. Dudley Jenkins officiating.

ROGER J. "SNUFFY" LANDSCHOOT
SPRINGWATER - Roger J. "Snuffy" Landschoot, 65, of the Carney Hollow Rd., Springwater, passed away Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 27, 2003) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, following a brief illness.
He was born in Rochester on July 31, 1938, a son of the late Raymond and Lucille Kuchman Landschoot. On June 28, 1975, he was married to Sheila Rohr Landschoot, who survives.
Snuffy was employed at Eastman Kodak in Rochester as an electrician for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was currently employed as a bus driver for the Livingston/Wyoming ARC.
He was a member of the Dansville Fish and Game Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose #1130 of Dansville. He was also a past chief and member of the Greece Lake Shore Fire Department for 16 years.
Surviving in addition to his dear wife, Sheila, are two sons, Stephen (Cathy) Landschoot of New Jersey and John (Amber) Landschoot of Greece; two daughters, Kristina (Rob) Reamer of Cohocton, Cindy (Rich) Bailey of Walworth; a brother, Ronald (Pat) Landschoot of New Mexico; and a sister, Nancy (Bruce Noltee) Giamberdino of Rochester; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
An informal memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Dansville Fish and Game Club (Gibson Street), followed by a reception. Arrangements are by the Hindle Funeral Home, 271 Main St., Dansville.

LOWELL D. BRIGGS
ARKPORT - Lowell D. Briggs, 65, passed away unexpectedly Thursday (Aug. 28, 2003) at St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell.

MARYSVILLE, Ohio - Lucille Rex Crosby, 95, of Marysville, Ohio, formerly of Cohocton, died Thursday (Aug. 28, 2003) at Memorial Hospital of Union City, Ohio.
She was born May 29, 1908, in Cohocton, to the late Myron E. and Mary Cotton Rex.
Lucille was a bookkeeper for the Crosby family owned furniture store in Cohocton for many years. She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Cohocton, where she served as organist and pianist for 58 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Cohocton and attended the First Presbyterian Church of Marysville, Ohio. She was an avid reader, especially mysteries; and enjoyed knitting and playing bridge.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas J. Crosby, whom she married in 1926; and also by two sisters, Helen Hart and Dorothy West.
Lucille is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Robert) DeGroot of Marysville, Ohio, and Sally (Donald) Hoople of Castine, Maine; four grandchildren, Nancy Hoople, Douglas (Gwen) Hoople, David (Betsy) Hoople and Anne (Joe) Connors; two great-grandchildren, Peter and Emily Hoople.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. today at the Underwood Funeral Home, Ohio, where the family will receive friends following the service, Rev. John M. Groat will officiate and burial will be held later at Mapleview Cemetery in Cohocton.

GREENWOOD - Jenette L. Foster, 71, of 3510 Olds Road, passed away Friday (Aug. 29, 2003) at St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell, after a short illness.

CARL J. NELSON
WELLSVILLE - Carl J. Nelson, 73, of 2871 Sheridan Ave., died Thursday (Aug. 28, 2003) at the Veteran Administration Medical Center in Buffalo.
He was born Dec. 20, 1929 in Elmira, the son of Carl J. and Catherine (Nichols) Nelson. Carl was raised in Elmira and had resided in Wellsburg, prior to moving to Wellsville in 1980. He was a veteran of W.W.II serving with the Army Air Corps in the European Theater of Operation. He was a graduate of Elmira Community College and Cornell University. He was employed as an Electrical and Mechanical Design Engineer for American La France of Elmira, Corning Glass, Inficon Corp. and Carrier Corp, both of Syracuse, retiring in 1994. From 1998 until his death, he was the administrator and a member of the Wellsville Moose Lodge #601, a member of the Frank B. Church Post #2530 VFW in Wellsville, the Wellsville Elks Lodge #1495 and the John P. Eaton Post American Legion in Corning.
He is survived by five children, Kathy Mausfield of Arlington, Texas, Deborah Nelson of Dallas, Texas, Edward Nelson of Elmira, Sylvia Rogers of Leroy, and Weston Rogers of Wellsville; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; four sisters, Marjorie Branson of Oregon, Nancy Stewart of Ovid, Dana Nelson of Cocoa, Fla. and Kay Martinelli of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; his fiancé, Elaine Carrow of Wellsville; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Nelson.
Friends are invited to call Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral with military honors will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home.

DAN C. TRETHAWAY
HORNELL - Dan C. Trethaway, 78, of 156 Hornell St., died Thursday (Aug. 28, 2003) in St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell, following a short illness.
He was born March 2, 1925 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the son of Thomas and Viola (Foss) Trethaway. He was married Jan. 9, 1947 in Scranton, Pa., to Elizabeth F. Hughes, who survives.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Dean C. Trethaway, in 1975.
He was a graduate of Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and had been a resident of Hornell for 49 years. Dan was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a recipient of five bronze stars for service in the European and Asiatic Theatres. He was employed in the N.Y.S. Employment Office until he retired. He served several years on the Administrative Board of the Hornell United Methodist Church and was also a Board member of the former Hornell United Way. He enjoyed playing the game of golf.
He is survived by one son, Dan C. Trethaway of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hornell United Methodist Church with Rev. Beth Kottemann officiating.
Internment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

BETTY ANN MORRIS
NUNDA - Betty Ann Morris, 69, died Friday (Aug. 29, 2003).
She was born Dec. 6, 1933, in the Town of Mt. Morris, to Robert and Mabel Petrie Love.
She was a Nunda Village Board Trustee and Mayor. She was a Keshequa School District Treasurer, and also a member of the Oakwood Cemetery Board.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Nunda; two daughters, Janice Ann Morris-Pirrello of Nunda and Monica Jayne Morris (Edward Quackenbush) of Nunda; son, Randall R. Morris of Geneseo; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Courtney, Andrew, Evan and Olivia; two sisters, Joan (Lyle) Orton of Nunda and Nancy (Sidney) Mann of Nunda; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Church of Nunda. Rev. Masaki Chiba and Rev. Michael Poore will be officiating.
Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Nunda Ambulance.

ALEKOS I. "ALEX" SPYRALATOS
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Alekos I. "Alex" Spyralatos, 69, of Tilghman Estates, died at home, on Monday (Aug. 25, 2003).
He was born Nov. 20, 1933, in Greece, a son of the late Ionnis and Ionna Raptis Spyralatos.
He emigrated to the United States in 1955 from Greece and worked at the Texas Hot Restaurant in Wellsville, before moving to Alfred in 1965, where he owned Alex's Restaurant and other businesses over the years. He went to Myrtle Beach from Alfred in 1986 and in 1988 bought Garden City Pancake House. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Ahepa in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and the Masonic Lodge in Alfred.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Angiliki Grivas Spyralatos; a son, John Spyralatos and his wife, Salome, of Greece; a daughter, Penelope Vlandis and her husband, William, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three brothers, Constantine Spyralatos and Dimitrios Spyralatos, both of Greece, and Vasilios Spyralatos of Chicago; two sisters, Thekla Trakosis of New Jersey and Vasiliki Bambalos of Australia; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Thursday at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Burial was held in Southeastern Memorial Gardens in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

MARILYNN J. STAPLES
WESTFIELD, Pa. - Marilynn J. Staples, 82, of North Fork Road, Westfield, Pa., passed away Monday (Sept. 1, 2003) at the Green Home, Wellsboro, Pa.
She was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Westfield, Pa., the daughter of Lynn and Daisey Persing Woodcock.
She was a homemaker; attended the Jemison Valley Church; was an avid teddy bear collector; and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, as well as growing flowers and gardening.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; sisters, Madaline Gilbert, Westfield, Pa.; Pauline Lyon, Pine City; niece, Melody (Tim) LaChiusa, Hornell; nephew, Bill (Connie) Plummer, RD Westfield, Pa.; numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra, in 2002.
Friends are invited to call at the Kenyon Funeral Home, 222 W. Main St., Westfield, Pa., Thursday 12-2 p.m., where funeral services will be held following calling hours at 2 p.m., with Rev. Donald Johns officiating. Burial will be in Sabinsville Cemetery, Sabinsville, Pa.

SALLY D. JEROME
HARTSVILLE - Sally D. Jerome, 65, of Purdy Creek Road, Hornell, entered into rest Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2003) at the St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
She was born in Bath on April 3, 1938, a daughter of Joseph and Gladys (Woodhouse) Spallina. On Feb. 10, 1984, in Macedon, Sally married Norman C. Jerome, her loving husband.
Sally had lived in the Rochester area for several years and had worked as a bus driver for BOCES #1. She had resided in Florida for 11 years before moving to Purdy Creek Road.
Survivors include her husband, Norman C. Jerome; her sons, Sam S. (Tonya) Santillo Jr. of Ocala, Fla., and Anthony J. Santillo of Chicopee, Mass.; her daughter, Joanne M. (Paul) Brock of Penfield; stepdaughters, Debra (Mark) Alderson of Hampton, Va., and Donna Schumacher of Webster; brother, Joseph (Darlene) Spallina and sister, Diane Spallina (Al Schmitz), all of Rochester; uncles, Fred (Martha) Woodhouse of Florida, and Jack and Anthony Spallina, both of Rochester; aunts, Phyllis (Shirley) Russell of Hornell and Maurita Woodhouse of Canisteo; 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 E. Main St., Canisteo. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Greenwood Street, Canisteo.

GORDON G. SCOTT
CANISTEO - Gordon G. Scott, 90, entered into rest on Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2003) at his home on Fairview Place, after a long illness. He was able to remain in his home for the past several years due to the help of several compassionate and competent caregivers.
