Marian St. Louis
GAASTRA — Marian St. Louis, 80, of 118 Main St., Gaastra, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility.
She was born Feb. 16, 1921, in Gaastra, daughter of the late George and Harriet (Shaeffer) Frederickson. She grew up in Gaastra and graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1938.
On June 30, 1938, she married John J. Heikkila and the couple lived in the local area until moving to Chicago in 1962.
While residing in Chicago, Marian worked in the underwriting department for a Chicago based insurance company. She returned to Iron River in 1976 and her husband preceded her in death in February of 1980.
She married Edwin St. Louis, in 1991, and the couple made their home in Gaastra.
Marian enjoyed sewing, gardening and traveling. She and her husband, Edwin, would spend winter months in Florida and Texas.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Frederickson; two sisters, Dorothy Frederickson and Arlene Oberg, and a great-granddaughter.
She leaves her husband, Edwin; a son, John C. (Angela) Heikkala of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; two daughters, Janice (Lee) Hoglind of LaGrange Park, Ill., and Dorothy (Joe) West of Abilene, Texas; a brother, Edwin (Belma) Frederickson of Grand Rapids, lower Michigan; a sister, Alice Mae Pierantoni of Greenville, lower Michigan; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Langenberg Funeral Home-Stambaugh Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Rev. Gary Spurgeon of Phelps, Wis., will officiate.
Burial will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.
Soloist Norma Spurgeon will sing, “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Kathryn Wills
IRON MOUNTAIN — Kathryn “Rena” Wills, 86, of 1208 West A St., Iron Mountain, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born July 27, 1915, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Serafino and Dominica (DeBernardi) Borla. She had lived in Iron Mountain her entire life.
Rena worked in the stockroom at J.C. Penney Co. for 41 years. She loved her job and really hated to retire.
She loved to cook, bake and feed all her neighbors and friends. Her pizzelles were legendary.
Above all else she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rena was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, J.C. Penney retirement group and a long time member of the Birthday Club.
She leaves her daughter, Sharon (Joseph) Pollard of Iron Mountain; five grandchildren, Linda Zahm of Livonia, lower Michigan, Peggy (Steve) Miller of Streamwood, Ill., Sharyl Pollard of DeWitt, lower Michigan, Lt. Col. Todd (Marilyn) Pollard of Mt. Laurel, N.J., and Mary Ellen Pollard of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; eight beloved great-grandchildren, Emily and Sarah Zahm, Lindsey Rae, Jeremy and Justin Miller, Kyle and Jordan Pollard, Bridget Pollard, and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard, in 1993, and six brothers, Frank, Spirit, Eddie, Charles, Peter and Alfred Borla.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain. Fr. Charles Piper will officiate.
Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Rick and Clem Gingras, Bob and Jim Markell, Mark Ellingson and Bill Mugford.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain or the American Cancer Society.

Irene Petroff
IRON RIVER — Irene L. Petroff, 85, of Iron River passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Iron River Care Center.
She was born March 8, 1916, in Caspian, daughter of the late August and Louise (Emer) Paul. She was a lifelong resident and attended the Stambaugh and Caspian schools.
Irene married Joseph Stromberg and he preceded her in death on May 2, 1964. She later married Anthony Petroff on Sept. 16, 1966, in Iron River.
The couple owned and operated Pine Acres Tavern on the Michigan-Wisconsin border for many years, retiring in 1999. After retirement the couple moved to Iron River to the City View Apartments.
Irene was a sportswoman, an avid hunter and fisherman.
She enjoyed cooking, cleaning and picking mushrooms.
Irene was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Caspian.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Arnold Paul, and a sister, Veronica Allard.
She leaves her husband, Anthony “Tony” of Iron River; a daughter, Janice (Noah) Brow of Curtis, Mackinac County; three sisters, Laverne Cook of Caspian, Geraldine Maki of Billings, Mont., and Agnes Frailing in Kingsman, Ariz.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services will be held at Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River. Rev. Norman Clisch will officiate.
Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association.
The Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River is in charge of arrangements.

Darlene McGeshick
IRON RIVER — Darlene Ann McGeshick, 53, of 418 Holly St., Iron River, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Marquette General Hospital.
She was born June 23, 1948, in Stambaugh, daughter of the late Harold and Eunice (Clements) Deiter. She grew up in the Scott Lake area and attended the Gaastra school and graduated from Stambaugh High School.
Darlene worked at the F. W. Means Co. in Caspian and was later a home health care worker. She had also been a nurses aid at the Iron River Nursing Home.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Deiter.
She leaves three sons, Cory (friend, Pamela Jenkins) McGeshick of Marquette, Ed Yackel serving in the U.S. Military in Korea, and Mike Yackel of Iron River; four brothers, Marvin (Fay) Deiter of White Pine, Ontonagon County, Ron (Sue) Deiter of Marquette, Gary (Linda) Deiter of Brillion, Wis., and Harold Deiter of Gaastra; three sisters, Bonnie (Bob) Vadnais of Skandia, Marquette County, Yvonne (Mike) Preiss of Iron River and Roxanne Deiter of Iron River; her stepmother, Beverly Deiter of Gaastra, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Langenberg Funeral Home-Iron River Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Norm Clisch, pastor of St. Cecelia Catholic Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bobby and Gary Vadnais, Shane and Mark Deiter, Michael Preiss, Lester Boodry and Michael Ritchie Jr.

Randy Smith
IRON MOUNTAIN — Randy G. Smith, 43, of Janesville, Wis., passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, in Janesville.
He was born Aug. 16, 1958, in Iron Mountain, son of Gerald and Rosalie (Martin) Smith of Florence, Wis.
He leaves a son, Randy G. Smith Jr. of Beloit, Wis.; two sisters, Deborah (Leon) Hesebeck of Oak Creek, Wis., and Michelle Smith of Florence; four brothers, Terry (Cindy) Smith of Florence, David (Karen) Smith of Edgerton, Wis., Glenn (Brenda) Smith and Bruce (Crystal) Smith, both of Beloit, Wis., and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
A private family service will be held at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Stanley March and Dan Swonger.
Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Florence.

Oscar Anttila
CRYSTAL FALLS — Oscar Raphael Anttila, 94, of Alpha died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Ruth Hospice in Milwaukee.
He was born March 2, 1907, in Mansfield, son of the late John and Hilda (Perry) Anttila. His parents were immigrants of Finland and in 1914 the family moved to Alpha. He graduated from Alpha High School in 1925.
Mr. Anttila joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He attended Army Radio School and became a communications technician. During World War II he served in the fighter squadron of the “Flying Tigers” in the China, Burma and India Theater of Operations. In November of 1945 he was honorably discharged from the service and received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal.
On Dec. 21, 1945, he married Edith Webber. The couple resided in Alpha. She preceded him in death on Dec. 28, 1995.
Before retiring in 1970, Mr. Anttila worked as a groundman and meter man for the Wisconsin Electric Power Co.
His interests were his family, reading, listening to the radio and keeping in touch with his friends.
Mr. Anttila was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2891 of Crystal Falls and a member of the United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls.
He had a deep faith in the “good Lord” and read his Bible daily.
He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Peter (Ora) Dillenburg of West Allis, Wis.; a granddaughter, Kara Dillenburg of West Allis; a cousin, Ralph Perry of New Mexico; his nieces, Mrs. Wilfred (Karen) Eckola of Appleton, Wis., Mrs. Glen (Jean) Tamminen of Black River Falls, Wis., Ms. Barbara Rochon of Three Oaks, lower Michigan, Mrs. Peter (Kathleen) Teitelman of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a nephew, John Johnson of Sacramento, Calif.
He was also preceded in death his a brother, Laurie; his sisters, Ruth, Mrs. Bruno (Bertha) DallaGrana of Florence, Wis., and Mrs. William (Kathryn) Johnson of Appleton, Wis.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home of Crystal Falls and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at United Lutheran Church in Crystal Falls. The Eastside Veteran’s Council will conduct a pass and revue at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Rev. Dr. John Linna will officiate.
A full honor guard will be provided at the graveside by the Eastside Veteran’s Council.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.

Annie Baga
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Annie (Cesario) Baga, 103, of Melbourne passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Tandem Health Care in Melbourne.
Annie was born in Iron Mountain on Aug. 28, 1898, daughter of the late Carlo and Rose (Cerutti) Cesario.
She married Joseph Baga on May 20, 1920, at Immaculate Conception Church in Iron Mountain. They moved to Florida after retirement in 1958. Joseph preceded her in death on July 7, 1984.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur, Frank, John and Alex Cesario; and sisters, Mary Cesario, Erminia (Philip) DuCharme and Alma (Vincent) Cena.
She leaves her son, Edward (Dorothy) Baga of Melbourne; her daughter, Rosemary (Louis) Mosca of Iron Mountain; her grandchildren, Jane Baga of Melbourne, Mark Baga of Battle Creek, lower Michigan, Rosann Capra of Iron Mountain, Lawrence (Janee) Mosca and Laura (Matthew) Songer of Marquette; eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Bonnie Wobig
JANESVILLE, Wis. — Bonnie Rose Wobig, 59, of 3336 LaMancha Drive, Janesville, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, with her family and friends by her side.
She was born Aug. 29, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter of the late Leo and Dorothy (O’Grady) Beauchamp.
She married Ronald R. Wobig on Dec. 14, 1963, in Clinton, Wis. They lived in Janesville for the last 30 years.
Bonnie leaves her husband, Ronald; three children, Kathleen (Rick) DeGarmo of Janesville, Steven (Cathleen) Wobig of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Ronald Joseph Wobig of Janesville; her six beloved grandchildren, Chasity, Lukas, Joshua, Lauren, Jacob and Dylan; her three sisters, Deborah (Frank) St. Michael of Milton, Wis., Cynthia (Bruce Blanton) DeYoung of Jacksonville, Fla., and Tina Marie Titus of Janesville, and many cherished nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Bonnie Rose was a kind and generous woman whose love had no boundaries. Her care and devotion she showed through her imagination and creativity. Bonnie’s sense of pride and compassion will forever be carried on through her loving family and friends. Her love will remain in our hearts all our days. She will be greatly missed.
Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Schneider Funeral Home in Janesville.
Memorial services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Ruth Wanzer
IRON RIVER — Ruth M. Wanzer, 81, formerly of Stambaugh, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at the Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach, Fla.
She was born Oct. 28, 1919, daughter of the late Paul and Louise Houlmont. She grew up and attended school in Alpha.
In October 1940, she married James Wanzer. The couple lived in Stambaugh and also in Virginia and Maryland prior to returning to Stambaugh in 1985.
Mr. Wanzer preceded her in death on April 18, 1988. She later moved to Ocean View, Del. and also spent time in Vero Beach, Fla.
Ruth had been a former secretary for the Easter Seal Society. While living in Stambaugh, she had also been a member of the former Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Eugene “Moose” Houlmont.
She is survived by a son, Boyd (Mary) Wanzer of Bethany Beach, Del.; a brother, Howard Houlmont of Marquette; two grandchildren, Adam Wanzer of Reston, Va. and Chris Wanzer of Vero Beach, Fla.
There will be no services. Private burial will take place in the Stambaugh Cemetery.

Howard Bartelt
IRON MOUNTAIN — Howard J. Bartelt, 84, of Chapin Street Apartments in Florence, Wis., died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at his home.
He was born March 22, 1918, in Elkhart Lake, Wis., son of the late Ernest and Linda (Feldman) Bartelt.
Howard married Bernice Clara on Dec. 30, 1939. She preceded him in death in December 1998.
He is survived by a son, Wayne (Mary) Bartelt of Spread Eagle, Wis.; two brothers, Gene (Lucille) Bartelt of Milwaukee and Robert (Billie) Bartelt of lower Michigan; two grandchildren, Darrell Bartelt of Sussex, Wis. and Dennis Bartelt of Colgate, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson, David Bartelt.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chapel in Pinelawn Cemetery. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Rev. Lowell Timm will officiate. Burial will be in the Pinelawn Cemetery.

Rudolph Mott
NORWAY — Rudolph P. “Rudy” Mott, 70, of Norway died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born Oct. 30, 1930, in Norway, son of the late John and Rita (Orler) Mott.
Rudy married Dorothy “Dot” Peterson on Aug. 22, 1952, at Camp Polk, La.
He served in the U.S. Army for six years from 1947 to 1953.
Rudy then worked for Garvaligia Construction in Warren, lower Michigan. He became a police officer with the Warren Police Department and as a corporal he worked on road patrol, dispatcher and the criminal surveillance team. He retired from the Warren Police Department in January of 1984.
After moving to the area, he worked as a special deputy for the Dickinson County Sheriff Department and as a Dickinson County Court bailiff transferring prisoners.
Rudy enjoyed traveling with the fifth-wheel trailer and did lots of woodworking for friends, relatives and grandchildren. He was always ready to help anyone. He was especially proud of his sons and grandchildren and had many special friends and relatives.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Christopher Wouters Lodge in Warren and a life member of the Norvulet Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4581 of Norway.
He leaves his wife, Dorothy; his sons, Arty (Pam) Mott of Warren and Ted Mott of Mount Clemens, lower Michigan; his grandchildren, Rocky, Erin, Ryan, Brandon and Sara Mott; a sister, Alma Moraska of Norway, and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Rocky Mott, and a brother, Alfred “Hoppy” Mott.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Miner Funeral Home of Norway. The Norvulet Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4581 of Norway will render a memorial service at 6:30 this evening.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson, chaplain of the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, will officiate.
Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery.

Lina VanMarter
FLORENCE, Wis. — Lina VanMarter left this world Sept. 22, 2001, a day after her 92nd birthday.
Born in Schorendorf, Germany, in 1909, to Martha (Seger) and Ernest Bubeck, she joined her brothers Ernest and Gustaf.
This woman whose life would almost span a century was no stranger to hard work and hard times. This same Lina that loved to dine on good food with friends once stood in line for a whole day to buy two pounds of horse meat that had to last a week. In the midst of Depression and at the invitation and generosity of a neighbor, she came to America on a ship called the Stuttgart in 1929. Going through Ellis Island and unable to speak English she ended up in Chicago taking work as a housekeeper. There she met and married Buster (Ernest) Kuttner in 1933. She and her husband operated a small tool and die business.
Lina gave birth to Elinor, her only daughter in 1934. They moved to Florence in 1963, securing property by the Brule River. There they made their home for the balance of their life. Buster passed in 1972.
Lina remarried to Sidney VanMarter, in 1978, until his passing in 1985.
Elinor would also proceed her mother in 1993.
Lina always proudly said, “I had two good husbands.”
She enjoyed life to the fullest.
To know her was to love her.
She never formally attended a church, yet every aspect of her life portrayed a Christian walk.
Even when people she trusted let her down, she never spoke a harsh word.
At Lina’s request there will be no visitation or services.
A memorial services will be announced later.
The family is being served by the Jacobs-Lundholm Funeral Home of Florence.

Dale Doehr
IRON MOUNTAIN — Dale Denver Doehr, 76, of Ventura, Calif., passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, in Ventura.
Dale was born to Helmuth and Olga in Iron Mountain. He lived most of his life in suburban Detroit and southern California.
He served as a member of the Fourth Armored Division in World War II and then attended the University of Michigan.
Dale was a gentle, understanding father, grandpa and friend, and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by four beloved sons, Darrel (Cindy), Alex (Jackie), Jon (Lesley), and George Mundstock; his brothers, Everett (Gerri) and Verdain (Barbara); his sisters, Ruth and Muriel, and four grandchildren, Sierra, Mitchell, Maxwell and Sally Rose.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Quinnesec Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the ALS Association.

Dorothy Prittinen
GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. — Dorothy Prittinen, 73, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Trenton, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Green Valley.

Gerald Larson
AURORA, Wis. — Gerald M. Larson, 85, of Aurora, Wis., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Iron Mountain, son of the late George Larson and Hilma (Mickelson) Larson. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Iron Mountain High School.
He married the former Opal Peronto on March 15, 1941, at Wesley Methodist Church in Iron Mountain. They were married for 60 years.
Gerald proudly served during World War II in the Signed Aircraft Warning Battalion as a heavy equipment operator. He was honorably discharged from the service in October 1945 and received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operation Service Medal.
He was employed at Elmer’s Hardware Store for 19 years and later worked for Proksch Construction. His last job was with Mueller Pipeline and he retired in 1978.
Gerald was a member of the Aurora Free Church and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3635 of Florence, Wis. He served for many years as a youth 4-H leader for horsemanship and his whole life revolved around his love for horses.
He leaves his wife, Opal; his daughters, Bonnie (David) Schneider of Niagara, Wis., and Karen (Marcel) Vinyeta of Green Bay, Wis.; four grandchildren, Kerri (Ed) Olson of Iron Mountain, Amy (Scott) Servais of Kingsford, Mark (Elizabeth) Vinyeta of Barcelona, Spain, and Kirsten Vinyeta of Green Bay, Wis.; two great-grandsons, Cody Hakala of Iron Mountain and his namesake Gerald Vinyeta of Barcelona, Spain.
Those of us who really knew Gerald will truly miss him.
Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kingsford Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Pastor Carl Utzat of the Aurora Free Church, will officiate.
The funeral procession will proceed to the Aurora-Homestead Cemetery for a graveside service.
Complimentary lunch will be served at the Aurora Free Church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Kingsford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
