Irene M. Lapointe
Irene M. Lapointe, 86 of 38 Mt. Auburn Street died Thursday June 12, 2003 at Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center after a period of failing health.
Irene was born in Somersworth on February 3rd 1917 and was the daughter of Joseph and Elmina (Turgeon) Lapointe. She was raised in Somersworth, attended St. Martin Academy, and was a lifelong resident of this community. She was a communicant of St. Martin Catholic Church.
Prior to her retirement, Irene had been employed at Dover Shoe Company for many years and retired from Encore Shoe Company in 1980.
Family members include 2 sisters, Claire and Rita Lapointe both of Somersworth and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Irene was predeceased by 3 brothers; Roland, Joseph and Robert Lapointe and by three sisters; Elmina Audet, Jeannette Poitras and Lucille Lapointe.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00am in St. Martin Catholic Church, W. High and Maple Street with Rev. Aaron Pfaff, Pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth. The family respectfully declines flowers. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Statue Restoration Fund c/o St. Martin Catholic Church. Envelopes
will be available at the funeral. The Bernier Funeral Home 49 South Street Somersworth is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Romeo Messier
Romeo MessierSomersworth - Romeo "Rum" Messier 83, of 215 Main Street died Monday June 2, 2003 at Riverside Rest home, Dover after a period of failing health.
Romeo was born in Somersworth on October 1, 1919 and was the son of Wilfred and Alma (Dubois) Messier. He was raised in Somersworth and graduated from St. Martin Academy. Romeo was a life long resident of Somersworth.
He was a veteran of WW II serving with the U. S. Army. Romeo served as caretaker for St. Martin Catholic Church, Somersworth with over 50 years of service, starting as a janitor at the former St. Martin Academy. He is best known for his work at Mount Calvary Cemetery, a job he held and loved up until his illness.
Romeo was very active in veteran's affairs serving as Commander of the Catholic War Veterans, Donald Roberge Post 1755. He was past Commander of the American Legion Post 69 of Somersworth, and a member of the 40 and 8. Romeo was also a Past President of the Holy Name Society of St. Martin Parish.
He will always be known for his service to the city, where he Served Somersworth as a Councilman of Ward 5 for over 28 years.
Family members include his wife of 54 years, Marie Ange (Bernier) Messier of Somersworth. 4 sons, Normand Messier of Berwick, Maine, Leo Messier of S. Berwick, Maine, Martin Messier of Somersworth and Ben Messier of Berwick, Maine. 3 daughters, Mrs. Peter (Rachel) Spainhower of Somersworth, Marie McKenna of Somersworth and Mrs. Michael (Michelle) Cox of Berwick, Maine. 1 brother, Roland Messier of Somersworth, 17 Grand children, 8 great grand children. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Messier, a sister, Loretta Demers and by his son, David Messier who died in 1989.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00am in St. Martin Catholic Church, W. High and Maple Street with Rev. Aaron Pfaff, Pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow with military honors in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth. Because Romeo had served St. Martin Parish for over 50 years calling hours will be held in St. Martin Church on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A combined veteran's service will be held at 7:30 PM. The family respectfully declines flowers. Memorial contributions may be made in Romeo's name to The Mount Calvary Cemetery Statue Restoration Fund or to Riverside Rest Home Unit 5. The Bernier Funeral Home 49 South Street Somersworth, NH is handling funeral arrangements.

Eileen E. Bennett

Eileen E. Bennett, 86, of 329 Main St. died Sunday May 11, 2003 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover following a lengthy illness.
Eileen was born in South Berwick, Me Feb. 9, 1917 the daughter of Arthur and Annie (Dooley) Blake. She was educated in South Berwick Schools and had attended Berwick Academy.
On July 30, 1935 she married David Bennett, they resided in South Berwick and Berwick for many years. Later they moved to Rochester, and for the past 20 years they lived with their son in Somersworth.
For most of her working career she was a supervisor of the packing room in area shoe factories.
Eileen was a Communicant of Holy Trinity Church. She had been a member of the Knights of Pythias, South Berwick Grange, Somersworth Woman's Garden Club, the Rochester Organ Club, and the Pocahontas and Rebecca's.
Eileen was very active in the affairs of her Parishes during her life making items for church fairs and teaching religion classes in the South Berwick Baptist Church.
Eileen was predeceased by 2 brothers Walton and Kenneth Blake and a sister Avis Blake.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years David Bennett of Somersworth, a son Thomas Bennett and his wife Betty. A daughter Deborah Anderson and her husband Bill of Berwick, ME. 7 grandchildren, Dale Bennett of Cave Creek, AZ, Eric Bennett of Somersworth, Mark Bennett of Sunnyvale, CA, Scott Paradis of Springvale, ME, Sandy Paradis of Seabrook, NH Beth Paradis Nudd of Stratham, NH, and Tom Paradis of Dover, NH. 7 Great-grandchildren T.J. Elias, Ken York, Mike Bennett, Dakodah Paradis, Adrianna Paradis, Tanner Paradis, And Jennaleah Paradis, Nieces and nephews.

Anita Dubois
Somersworth - Anita Dubois 79, formerly of 5 Turgeon Lane died Monday May 5, 2003 at Riverside Rest home, Dover, after a period of failing health.
Anita was born on April 20, 1924 in Somersworth and was the daughter of James and Excia (Croteau) Vincent. She was raised in Somersworth and was a lifelong resident of this community.
Before her retirement, Anita had worked for Roberts Shoe and Somersworth Shoe in the leather room. She also worked for her son as a cook at Paul’s Fish and Chips in Somersworth.
Mrs. Dubois was a communicant of St. Martin Church and was a former member of the St. Anne Sodality. Anita was also a member and past president of the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary. She also held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary.
Family members include her son Paul Dubois of Somersworth. Her two brothers Paul Vincent of Gonic and Leo Vincent of Brunson, SC. 2 Grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several cousins, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by 5 brothers, Albert, Adrien, Lucien, William and Roland Vincent and by a sister Rose Caron. Her husband Euclide “Clyde” Dubois, who she married in 1948, predeceased her in 1978.
Calling hours at Bernier Funeral Home 49 South Street, Somersworth, NH will be on Friday from 6 to 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 9:00AM in St. Martin Church. W. High at Maple Street, Somersworth with Rev. Aaron Pfaff, pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth. Memorial contributions may be made in
her name to either Seacoast Hospice or to The St. Martin Parish Capital Improvement Fund.

Willis P. Gould
Rochester - Willis P. Gould, 71, of 76 Eagle Drive died Thursday May 15, 2003 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover after a long illness.
Willis was born in Rochester on July 6, 1931 and was the son of Willis and Lennie (Harlor) Gould Sr. He was raised in Somersworth and graduated from Somersworth High School Class of 1949. He furthered his education graduating from Macintosh College, Dover, Class of 1951.
Willis was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the United States Air Force. Prior to retirement, He had served as an accountant in the Office of the Comptroller, Pease Air Force Base, Portsmouth with over 34 years of service.
Mr. Gould was a member of the American Legion Post 69 of Somersworth and also held membership in the Somersworth Grange. Willis enjoyed all sports, but especially baseball and the Boston Red Sox.
Family members include his wife Jeannette (Lapointe) Gould of Rochester; His step mother Elsie Hallam of Alton; A son Jon Gould of Somersworth. Two daughters, Mrs. Montgomery Howe of Norwich, CT and Kimberly Gould of Derry. Two stepsons, Robert J. Lefebvre of Somersworth and Michael R. Lefebvre of Rollinsford. Two step daughters Patricia Tyo of Rochester and Mrs. Michael Janet McKay of Rochester. 13 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a half sister Ernestine McNally and by his first wife Anna (Cook) Gould who died in 1989.
Calling hours at Bernier Funeral Home 49 South Somersworth will be on Monday from 9 to 10:30am. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00AM in St. Martin Catholic Church, W. High and Maple Street with Rev. Aaron Pfaff, pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in Forest Glade Cemetery, Somersworth. The family respectfully declines flowers. Eliza Rose Aubert
Eliza Rose Aubert, 91,formerly of Emerald House, died Wed Apr. 9, 2003 at the Dover Rehab & Living Center after a period of failing health.
Eliza was born in Berwick, Me. Apr. 7, 1912 the daughter of Ernest and Marie (Renaud) Tanguay. She resided in Somersworth and was a communicant of St. Martin Church.
Eliza had been employed for many years at the Baxter Woolen Mill until her retirement in 1974.
Eliza was the Widow of Joseph Ernest Tanguay who died in 1956. She was also predeceased by 3 grandsons Keith Ferland, Stephen Ferland and Michael Clement, 3 brothers Albert Tanguay, Joseph N. Tanguay and Fr. Ovid (Paul) Tanguay OFM.
Survivors include 2 daughters Mrs. Norman (Rachel) Ferland of Dover, NH Mrs. Warren (Pauline) Clement of London, England. 5 grandchildren. A sister Annette Dumont of Somersworth. 2 brothers Valmore Tanguay of Somersworth and E.A. (Pete) Tanguay of Ocean Bluffs, Ma. Nieces and nephews.

Melpa J. Breton
Melpa Breton, 81, formerly of 195 Main St., died Tuesday Apr. 15, 2003 at the Sunbridge Nursing Home in Rochester after a period of failing health.
Melpa was born in Somersworth June 25, 1921 the daughter of James and Violet (Libby) Yerakes. She was educated in Somersworth Schools.
Melpa then went to Boston to reside and work for the next 13 years. She then returned to Somersworth and remained here working in area shoe factories.
Melpa was an active Member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries with over 30 years participation.
Melpa was the widow of Alphege Breton.
Members of her family include a son Allen Breton and his fiancee Brenda Downs of Rochester, NH. 2 grandchildren Tanya Marie Breton and Alana Lynn Breton. Brenda's Children Brandi and Shane Downs. 3 Great-grandchildren. 2 sisters Alice Hartford of Somersworth and Bessie Shawcross of Watertown, NY. A brother Tony Yerakes of Rochester, NH. Nieces and nephews.

Rella M. Chasse
Rella M. Chasse, 79, of 28 Franklin St. Apt. # 6 died Monday Apr. 14, 2003 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Rella was born in Fort Kent, Me. Apr. 1, 1924.
She was the daughter of John and Josephine (Clavette) Chasse.
Rella resided in the Somersworth area most of her life and was educated in Somersworth Schools. She was employed in area Shoe factories and later worked at General Electric Co., Retiring in 1984 after 35 years of service.
Rella is predeceased by 6 brothers, Arice, Omer, Meril, Lionel, Roger and Leo Chasse. 2 sisters, Dula Toussaint and Lucille Heon.
Survivors include 3 brothers, Armand and Conrad Chasse both of Dover, NH. Roland Chasse of Plant City, Fl.
2 sisters, Elia Gouin and Theresa Richer both of Somersworth.
Several Nieces and Nephews.

Dean Dandurant
SOMERSWORTH — Dean J. Dandurant, 51, of 367 High St., died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his residence as a result of an accident.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1952, in Montana, the son of Paul and Alene (Guilmette) Dandurant.
He was educated in Amesbury, Mass., graduating from Amesbury High School, Class of 1970.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era.
He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator at Barletta Construction, later at Puma Construction, and most recently at Waterline Industries.
He had been a soccer and baseball coach for many years in Amesbury.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly (Wells) Dandurant of Somersworth; his mother, Alene Dandurant of Amesbury; his children, Robert and Brianna, both of Amesbury; four brothers, Timothy, Mark and Philip of Amesbury, and Michael of Arizona; three sisters, Donna Tessimond of Hampton Falls, Theresa Harding of Methuen, Mass., and Pauline Bourque of Haverhill, Mass.; stepchildren, Sherri Wood and Scott Dame, both of Somersworth; a grandson, Aaron Wood of Somersworth; nieces and nephews.

Andrew LaBranche
ROCHESTER — Andrew R. LaBranche, 82, of 45 Eagle Drive, Tara Estates, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Concord Hospital.
He was born in Newmarket on Jan. 29, 1922, the son of Felix and Marie (Grondin) LaBranche. He had been a resident of the Rochester area since 1960, previously residing in Newmarket.
He had been a longtime communicant of St. Mary Church in Rochester, and more recently attended St. Martin Church in Somersworth.
He had worked many years for Simplex Wire & Cable in Newington, prior to his retirement. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and enjoyed bowling, horse and dog racing and talking on his C.B. radio, using the handle "Spaceship."
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ethel Louise (Burres) LaBranche in 1985, and by his second wife, Laurette (LeHoullier) LaBranche in 2000.
Family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Kathy LaBranche of Strafford; his stepchildren and their spouses, Tom and Diane Brown of Somersworth, Linda and Lawrence Dumais of York, Maine, Dennis and DK Brown of Bloomington, Ind., David and Macine Brown of Peterborough, Larry and Linda Brown of Niskayuna, N.Y., Norman and Susan Brown of Sandown, Gary and Ann Brown of Berwick, Maine, and Jeff and Denise Brown of Savannah, Ga.; three brothers, Robert LaBranche of Zephyr Hills, Fla., Leo LaBranche of Newmarket, and Richard LaBranche of Rollinsford; three sisters, Edna Plante of Dover, Cecile Ross of Tampa, Fla., and Isabelle Demeritt of Belmont; twenty step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rena Mae Wilson
Somersworth - Rena Mae Wilson, 79 of 117 Franklin Street died Tuesday February 17, 2004 at her residence after a long illness. Rena was born in Northwood on September 11, 1924 and was the daughter of Irving and Hazel (Lang) Bartlett. She was raised in Northwood and graduated from Coe-Brown Academy.
Mrs. Wilson had been a resident of Dover from 1947 to 1972. She had resided in Somersworth for the past 32 years.
During WW II Rena had been employed as a “Rosie the Riveter” with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, something she was very proud of doing. She was also a CNA and had been employed in a nursing home in Berwick and with Langdon Place in Dover. Rena spent most of her adult life as a homemaker caring for her children and spending countless hours with her grandchildren whom she truly loved. Rena enjoyed crocheting and had made afghans for all of her grandchildren.
Family members include her two sons, Joseph Wilson Jr. and his wife Rita of Rochester, and David E. Wilson of Strafford. She leaves three daughters, Joyce Hilton and her husband John of S. Berwick, Maine, Nancy Anderson and her husband Michael of S. Berwick Maine and Janet Vaivods and her husband Joseph of Somersworth. She also leaves 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jolene Vaivods, her sister Francena Bartlett and Barbara Averill. Her husband Joseph R. Wilson predeceased her in 1983.
Calling hours at Bernier Funeral Home, 49 South Street, Somersworth will be on Friday evening from 7 to 9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00am in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, High Street Somersworth with Rev. Tom Coover, Pastor as celebrant. Spring burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Rollinsford.

Barbara R. Cals
Somersworth- Barbara R. Cals, 63 of 11 Drew Road, died Saturday January 31, 2004 at the Rochester Manor after a period of failing health.
Born August 19, 1940 in Coraopolis, PA she was the daughter of the late John P. Hetzer, Jr. and Rose Anna (Mauer) Hetzer.
Survivors include her husband Paul J. Cals of Somersworth; two sons, P. Douglas Cals of Dover, Timothy J. Cals, SSGT USMC; one daughter, Kimberly A. Cals of Dover; one brother, Raymond R. Hetzer, Sr. of Coraopolis, PA; three sisters, Joann Dinell of Coraopolis, PA, Rose Ann Morgan of LaVergne, TN, Frances Mauer of Barrington and four grandchildren.

Delia L. Chase
New Port Richey, Florida Delia L. Chase, 88 formerly of 7 Cemetery Road, Somersworth, NH died Saturday January 30, 2004 in New Port Richey after a long illness.
Delia was born in Laconia, NH and was the daughter of George and Delia (Lessard) LaPierre. Before her retirement she had been employed as a surgical nurse and had worked for several Physicians' Offices.
While a resident of Somersworth, Delia was very active in the community. She was a Communicant of St. Martin Catholic Church. She also held membership with the Somersworth Historical Society and the Somersworth Golden Age Club.
She was also very active in the community of New Port Richey where she held membership with the VFW Aux. Post 7987, The Veterans Village Activities Association, Seven Springs Civic Association, The Five Lees Dramatic Club and was also a member of the Ladies Guild of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Mrs. Chase was an avid Golf Enthusiast and held membership with Sunningdale Golf Club of Somersworth and V.V. Golf Club of New Port Richey.
Delia was predeceased by her husband Chester Chase who died in 1978 and byher sister Delma Colby who died in 2000.
Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth, NH. The Bernier Funeral Home 49 South Street, Somersworth, NH has been entrusted with final arrangements.

Olympia "Bea" Jones
SOMERSWORTH-Olympia "Bea" Jones, 80, of 163 Main St., died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Dover Rehab and Living Center.
Born in Dover, November 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Stella (Demopoulos) Melitus.
A resident since 1962, she moved here from Dover. She was a graduate of Dover High School and worked for many years as a packing room supervisor at Miller Shoe Company of Dover.
"Bea" was a communicant of Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of Somersworth.
She was a member of AARP.
Family members include her son, James "Jimmy" Jones of Kingston; one brother, James Melitus of Barefoot Bay, FL; three sisters, Dinah Marouthis of Somersworth, Mary Valoras of Somersworth and Helen Valhos of Somersworth; two grandsons, Jess Jones and Jacob Jones , both of Kingston; nieces and nephews.

Eva Rose LePage
Berwick, Maine Eva Rose LePage, 83, of 15 Collins Lane died Thursday January 29, 2004 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital Dover, NH. Eva was born on August 15, 1920 in Rollinsford, NH and was the daughter of Emile and Melinda (Lacasse) Joncas. She was raised in Rollinsford and had been a resident of Berwick for the last 25 years.
Prior to her retirement, Eva had been employed in area shoe shops including Miller Shoe Co. During WW II she was employed with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Somersworth Plant in the electrical division.
She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church where she held membership in the Ladies of St. Ann. Eva was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 47 of Rollinsford.
Family members include her sons, Pete LePage and his wife Peg of Franklin, NH and Daniel LePage and his wife Debra of Berwick, Maine. Two daughters, Elaine Bonnell and her husband John and Patricia Collins and her husband Gary, all of Berwick, Maine.
She leaves a brother Paul Joncas of Rollinsford, NH and a sister, Rhenda Pinkham of Rochester, NH. 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Roland, Richard and Gerard Joncas. Her husband Armand J. Lepage predeceased her in 1972.
Burial will be in New Town Cemetery, Rollinsford, NH in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to: The American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720. Folders are available at the funeral home.
