Margaret J. Nichols
VIRGINIA BEACH - Margaret Jean Nichols, born Jan. 24, 1933, died at home in Virginia Beach Sept. 15, 2007. She was 74 and was the daughter of William James Connell and Gertrude Mary Steinbacher of Williamsport, Pa. She retired from Virginia Beach General Hospital. She had a degree as a medical assistant.
She is survived by 10 children, Christopher Nichols and wife Jacqueline, David Nichols, Mary Ann Nevins and husband Wade, Linda Swanson and husband Robert, Michelle Smith, Lawrence Nichols Jr., Valerie Webb and husband Dick, Bonnie Wobler and husband Donald, Cynthia Dougherty and husband Donald and William Nichols and wife Juanita; and her sister, Rose Strouse. She was blessed with 26 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was a loving, caring mother of strength and courage. She was loved by her family and friends who will dearly miss her.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, where the Rev. Father Luke Policicchio OSB will offer a prayer with the family at 7 p.m. A funeral will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 4832 Haygood Road, Virginia Beach. Pastor Ernest Robuck will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be offered to the Nichols Family c/o Linda Swanson, 1013 Holladay Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. Russell F. Crutchlow
SEAFORD - On Sept. 16, 2007, Col. Russell Francis Crutchlow, U.S. Air Force retired, passed away at his home at the age of 86. Col. Crutchlow served 32 years in the U.S. Air Force. He began his service as a fighter pilot in World War II, then went on to serve in the Korean Conflict during which he was awarded the Purple Heart and distinguished flying cross with three clusters. He then served three tours in Vietnam. He retired from service at Langley Air Force Base in 1974.
Col. Crutchlow was preceded in death by his mother and father, two brothers and two sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 58 years, Alethia Gibney Crutchlow; two sons, Russell F. Crutchlow Jr. of Seaford and Larry D. Crutchlow and wife Judy O. Crutchlow of Columbia, S.C.; and one daughter, Lynne C. Hodges and her husband Robert W. Hodges of Gloucester, Va. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Lindsey A. Hodges of Williamsburg, Va., Whitney L. Hodges of Centreville, Va., Robert E. Hodges of Tallahassee, Fla., Larry D. Crutchlow II of Columbia, S.C., and Jason B. Crutchlow of Greenville, S.C.; and one great-grandchild, William P. Crutchlow of Columbia, S.C.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. The family will receive friends following the service.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, in Arlington National Cemetery.

Paul D. Crockett
CHESAPEAKE - Paul Davis Crockett, 83, of the 2900 block of Mattox Drive, passed away Sept. 18, 2007, in his home. Paul was an Army veteran serving in the 82nd Airborne during World War II. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Station police department after 32 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Carita Payne Crockett; three sons and one daughter, Paul David Crockett Jr. (Beth) of Como, N.C., Michael A. Crockett (Linda), Paul Michael Crockett and Kimberly S. Crockett, all of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Shawn Crockett, Brian Crockett, Kevin Crockett and Paula Hamilton; and four great-grandchildren.
His children greatly appreciate the time he devoted to teaching them right from wrong and always making time to help them when needed.
At his request, there will be no service. Mr. Crockett will rest in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk.
To Celeste, Scott, Cheryl and all of Heartland Hospice, God bless and many thanks for your care. Cremation Society of Virginia, Virginia Beach office, is assisting the family.

Kendrick O. Johnson
CHESAPEAKE - Kendrick O’Neal “K.O.” Johnson Sr., 81, of the 3100 block of Guenevere Drive, passed away Sept. 16, 2007. He was born April 26, 1926, in Goldsboro, N.C., where he graduated from Dillard High School. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1974 after serving 30 years. Mr. Johnson also retired from the Journal and Guide where he was a field representative.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shirley R. Johnson of Chesapeake; two daughters, Willette W. Barnes (Winston) of Greensboro, N.C., and Paulette W. Matthews (Larry) of Goldsboro, N.C.; one son, Kendrick O’Neal Johnson Jr. of Newport News; three stepchildren, Walter J. Wilkins Jr. (Brenda), Kevin Wilkins and Sharon Wilkins; one brother, Marcellus Patrick Johnson (Venella) of Goldsboro, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; a special sister, Ruth Ward of Dallas, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St. Dr. Kirk Houston will officiate. Interment will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Family and friends will assemble at the chapel for the service. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.

Forrest P. Old Sr.
CHESAPEAKE - Forrest Paul Old Sr., 80, of the 500 block of Saber Drive, died Sept. 18, 2007, in his home. Born in South Mills, N.C., he was the son of the late Joe Frank Old and Lena Small Old. He was predeceased by two sisters, Louise and Pauline; seven brothers, Herman, Rufus, Parker, George, Curtis, Frank and Talmon. Forrest joined the U.S. Navy at age 16 and served in the Pacific during World War II. He attended the University of North Carolina. He worked for Ford Motor Company for 38 years and retired as the operations accounting manager. He coached Little League baseball and basketball and reportedly served as the first athletic director for Chesapeake Parks and Recreation. Forrest was a charter member of the Great Bridge Lions Club. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the NAE Federal Credit Union since its inception. He will be remembered for his love of The Wednesday Night Card Club.
Forrest is survived by his loving wife, Anne Southerland Old; his daughter, Joy Austin Young and husband Tom of Norfolk; two sons, F. Paul Old Jr., M.D. and wife June of Moyock, N.C., and Michael J. Old and wife Tommie of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Ashley Austin George and husband Bryan, Alison Austin Garter and husband Churchill, all of Richmond, Sarah Old Simpson and husband Michael of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Forrest Paul Old III of Radford, Va.; one great-granddaughter, Madison Anne George; one sister, Faye and husband George; and two brothers, Small and wife Elsie and Howard and wife Lois Jean.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The viewing will begin Friday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Herbert Smith Jr.
CHESAPEAKE - Herbert Smith Jr. of the 2800 block of Aaron Drive died Sept. 17, 2007. He was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Thelma L. Smith; six daughters, Debra Chandler (Morris), Cheryl Smith, Tonya Walden (Darryl), Paula Curry (Ed), Darlene Burton (Leroy) and Vera Thomas; two sons, Kerry Chandler (Valerie) and Ronnie Chandler (Karen); five sisters, Anita Smith (Harry), Barbara Hunter (Donald), Shirley Brown (Willis), Janet Gholson (James) and Justine Ringo; three brothers, George Smith (Barbra), Eugene Smith (Evelyn) and Clifton Smith (Cherlene); 19 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday by the Rev. E.T. Knight in Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Deep Creek Blvd. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, in charge.

Vinnie Mae Gee
NORFOLK - Vinnie Mae Gee, known as “Sis. Gee,” 72, of the 2400 block of E. Virginia Beach Blvd., passed away Sept. 15, 2007.
Vinnie was predeceased by her mother, Lorine Arnold and a son, James H. Gee Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, James H. Gee; two daughters, Ivy M. Gee and Cheryl A. Gatlin; four sons, Julian, Arnell, Cedric and Meric Gee; her father, Bishop Elijah Arnold; two sisters, Magnolia Johnson and Donnetta Riddick; 10 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at noon Saturday in St. Paul COGIC, 1615 Isaac St., Norfolk, Dr. Wilbert L. Daniels Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will be Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. in Beach Funeral Services Inc., 4456 Bonney Road, Virginia Beach.

Donald Jones
NORFOLK - Donald “DJ” Jones, 42, of the 3900 block of Cape Henry Ave., departed this life Sept. 15, 2007, in his residence. Mr. Jones was born in Norfolk Sept. 15, 1965, to Marie L. Jones and the late Benjamin C. Jones Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Michael Wells; his mother, Marie L. Jones; one sister, Laurann Jones; five brothers, Benjamin C. Jones Jr. (Mamie), Michael Jones (Gloria), Ronnie Jones, Earl Jones and Curtis Jones; one uncle, James H. Minter; a special friend, Brenda Ruffin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St. Bishop Ronald Worrell will officiate. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at 435 Chapel St. one hour prior to the service for the procession to the chapel. Dorothy M. Oldaker
NORFOLK - Dorothy M. Oldaker, 89, went to be with the Lord Sept. 19, 2007. She was born April 25, 1918, in Weeksville, N.C., to the late Edward and Etta Elizabeth Markham. Dorothy had been a very active member of Tidewater Baptist Temple in Chesapeake for almost 30 years. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 26 years, Emery Ralph Oldaker.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Kenneth Oldaker of Norfolk; stepsons, Lawrence L. Oldaker of Auke Bay, Alaska, and Donald R. Oldaker of Charlottesville, Va.; sisters, Sarah A. Farris of Norfolk, Marie Jackson of Suffolk, Becky Kittrell of Portsmouth and Addie Maston of Virginia Beach; brother, Thomas Markham of Seattle, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral conducted by Pastor Charles Pearson, Dr. Paul Hawkins and Dr. D.M. Hardison will be held Saturday at noon in Tidewater Baptist Temple, 1316 Campostella Road, Chesapeake. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby Street, Norfolk. The family will receive friends in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Sarah Bonita Bunting
PORTSMOUTH - Sarah Bonita “Bonnie” Bunting, 79, passed away Sept. 18, 2007. She was a native of Georgia.
Mrs. Bunting was predeceased by her husband, Melville Bunting and a daughter, Susan L. Bunting. She was survived by two sons, Bruce A. Bunting and wife Bridget of Suffolk and Kenneth T. Bunting and wife Debbie of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Brian, Kenneth Jr., Kacey and Leilani; two great-grandchildren, Lilee and Justin; and numerous nieces and nephews
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Steve Bingham with burial at Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. Calvin B. Fields
PORTSMOUTH - Calvin B. “Tip” Fields, 56, of the 600 block of Henderson St., died Sept. 17, 2007, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. He was born in Portsmouth.
Survivors include his mother, Mable Fields and father, Waddell Fields, both of Portsmouth; two sisters, JoAnn Veale (James) of Portsmouth and Alyise Gaines (Carl) of Chesapeake; two brothers, Clarence Fields (Rose) of Capitol Heights, Md., and George Fields of Portsmouth; one aunt; nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Celestial Baptist Church, Portsmouth, with the Rev. Leon J. Boone officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Friday. The family will be at 1410 Lake Forest Drive, Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the procession to the church.

Aubrey D. Banton
VIRGINIA BEACH - Aubrey D. “Danny” Banton, 56, passed away Sept. 18, 2007. Born July 10, 1951, in Waynesboro, Va., to the late Aubrey W. and Dorothy M. (McQueen) Banton, he was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and employed with Sonny’s Mechanical Service for more than 31 years. In his free time, Danny enjoyed canoeing and spending time with his Labs, Buckwheat and Spanky.
He is survived by his wife, Linda D. Banton; son, Michael A. Banton; daughter, Stephanie R. Banton; two brothers, Jerry Robinson and wife Nancy and Greg Banton and wife Sophie; four sisters, Leslie Munden and husband John, Barbara Thompson and husband Doug, Donna Glass and Beth Brown; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Tolson; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Wright Brady and wife Linda.
A service with military honors by the U.S. Marine Honor Guard will be held at the gravesite in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens at 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Asa Lowe officiating. Fay Reuben Halpern
VIRGINIA BEACH - Fay Reuben Halpern, 91, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, died on Sept. 17, 2007.
A native of Portsmouth, she was the fifth of six children born to Isaac and Bertha Reuben. A graduate of Wilson High School during the Depression, her enthusiasm and intelligence propelled her into a series of responsible positions. She was always proud to have risen through the ranks of civilian employees at the Norfolk Naval Base to supervise 50 people in the payroll office of the Naval Supply Depot during World War II.
Her first husband, Milton Kruger, died in 1944. In 1947, Fay married Norris Halpern. During their 51-year marriage, Norris and Fay worked together side by side in Norris’ law office for almost 40 years. Under her husband’s supervision, Fay searched titles, ran real estate closings and even owned her own real estate title insurance company.
Fay’s brothers, George, Moses and Howard Reuben and her sisters, Lillian Juren and Celia Reuben, all predeceased her. She is survived by her three daughters, Linda Kent, Joan Halpern and Peggy Halpern Mitchel and four grandchildren, Melissa and Rochelle Kent, and Noah and Leah Mitchel.
A graveside funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at King David Garden at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6309 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk. There is an entrance to King David Garden at Newtown Road and Center Drive. Donations in Fay Halpern’s memory may be made to Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay Foundation, United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, or Temple Emanuel of Virginia Beach. No flowers please.
