Mrs. Kate Coon, Tipton Resident, Dies
Mrs. Kate Sproat Coon, who had made her home with her brother Chas. Sproat and sister Gertude Sproat, the past several months, died Monday, a short time after having suffered a stoke. Her sister, Mrs. Emma Reese, preceded her in death only last spring, there remaining now three of a family of twelve brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Kate Coon, one of a family of twelve children was born in Buena Vista county, Pennsylvania, March 24,1867. She passed away at the home of her brother, Charles Sproat, in Tipton, Monday, February 25,1935. She had reached the age of 67 years and 11 months. She had been in frail health for some time, but her death came as the result of a stroke which she suffered Monday morning. The Sproat family came from Pennsylvania to Iowa in an early day. In young womanhood Kate Sproat was married to Fred Coon, who preceded her in death on April 11, 1929. Mrs. Coon has lived in Perry, Iowa, for fourteen years where she has many friends. She was a faithful and interested member of St. Paul's Methodist church in Perry. During the past year she came to Tipton to make her home with her brother and sister.
She leaves to mourn her going, two sisters; Miss Gertude Sproat of Tipton, and Mrs. Martha Bower of Sublimity, Oregon; one brother Charles Sproat of Tipton; several nieces and nephews, Herbert Hillegas of Greene, Iowa; Lee Hillegas of Chicago; Roy and Helen Hoover of Pennsylvania; and Mrs. Teas Schutt of Cedar Rapids.
Short funeral services were conducted at the home in Tipton Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. Roscoe C. Jerrell and REv. H.N. Poston in charge. The body will be taken to Perry, at which place there will be a service and burial will be in the cemetery at Perry, Iowa.
Margaret Ballou Thomas, daughter of George and Hattie Ballou, was born in Bloomington, Ill., July 26, 1863, and died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Osborne in Rochester, Iowa, February 11, 1935, aged 71 years, 6 months, and 5 days. Her girlhood was spent in Bloomington. She was married at Thelma, Kansas, December 26,1888, to John C. Thomas. They spent the first six years of their married life in Thelma, removing in 1894 to Indiana, where they made their home for seven years. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas came to Tipton, Iowa, in 1911 where they resided for six years. They came to the Rochester community in 1917, living on a farm north of town. Three years later, they move to the Carey place where they made their home for five years. Later they lived for a year in Springdale and had just moved to a farm along the river south of Rochester when Mr. Thomas was stricken and died. A few days later, Mrs. Thomas came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Osborn where she was tenderly taken care of in her affliction of blindness, until her passing last Monday night.
She had been unable to do her work for 12 years and totally blind for 8 years. She was of a very kind disposition, always good natured and appreciative of what was done for her. Especially touching was her affection for Carrie, Mr. and Mrs. Osborn's granddaughter who read to her hour after hour.
The funeral service was held at Rochester church on Wednesday, February 13, with Rev. Otis Moore in charge.

Mrs. Nancy Van Zandt, 92, one of Wilton's oldest residents who came to Iowa with her parents in a covered wagon when six years of age, died at her home at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday June 12, 1935.
Mrs. Van Zandt continued to do her own housework and was unusually alert mentally until she suffered a stroke and paraplysis early Tuesday. She was the oldest member of Purity chapter No. 365, Order of Eastern Star.
Nancy Kelly was born in Lima, Indiana., November 11, 1842 and at the age of six years came to Iowa with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Kelly. They crossed the Mississippi river at Dubuque in a flat boat.
The family settled on a Cedar county farm north of Wilton in the Ayresvuike community where she grew to womanhood.In 1867 she was married to Cornelius Van Zandt and 10 years later they moved to Wilton, Mrs. Van Zandt residing here continuously since that time. Mr. Van Zandt died in 1910 while serving as postmaster of Wilton. He was a Civil war veteran. Mrs. Van Zandt's son and four daughters also preeded her in death.
Six grandchildren survive, Mrs. Gretchen Merrill of boston, Mass.; Mrs. Evelyn Chapin of Silver Creek, N.Y.; Mrs. Margaret Christiansen of West Liberty; Mrs. Mary Fox of Trenton, N.J.; Mrs. Gretchen Friedli of Wilton who made her home with Mrs. Van Zandt,; and Francis Mellicker of Chicago. Five great grandchildren, a brother, John Kelly of Jackson, Wyoming; and a sister, Mrsl Lucy Klotz of Columbus Junction, also survive.
Funeral rites were held at the Prebyterian church at 2 p.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. C.W. Pfeiffer, pastor. Burial was in Oakdale cemetery.
ANDREWS, THOMAS CLARK - age 59, of Knoxville, Solway Community, went to his
heavenly home on Wednesday, November 17, 1999. He was a member of the Smith
Grove Baptist Church. Employed by Lockheed Martin for 25 years as a
carpenter. Born August 25, 1940 in Launds Co., Columbus, Miss. where he lived
until 1956 then moved to Clinton where he attended Clinton High School and
graduated in 1959. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend
to many. Preceded in death by mother, Anna Fairchild of Mississippi.
Survivors: wife, Wilma Andrews of Knoxville; daughters, Terry Surrett of
Piedmont, Ala. and Tammy Dobbs of Piedmont, Ala.; son, Mitchell "Bud" Andrews
of Solway; step-son, David Milsap of Loudon County; father, Mitchell Andrews
of Oak Ridge; sisters, Brenda Joyce Atkins of Aberdeen, Miss., Carol Ann Cook
of Oak Ridge; 2 step-sisters, Jane Lancaster of Hamilton, Miss. and Faye
Saulvier of Murfreesboro; 10 grandchildren, and 1 great-granddaughter;
several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. The family will receive
friends 7-9 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 1999 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in
Clinton. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 19, 1999 in the
chapel with Rev. Darrell Hackworth officiating. Interment will follow in Oak
Ridge Memorial Park. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton in charge of all
arrangements.
CARR, DR. WALTER H. - age 89, of LaFollette, passed away Wednesday, November
17, 1999 at LaFollette Medical Center. He was a member of Fincastle United
Methodist Church, where he taught the Men's Sunday School Class for 15 years.
A retired dentist and teacher, he was a member of the Berwind Masonic Lodge
in West Virginia, the McDowell Dentist Society, 35 year member of the Kiwanis
Club, and Lieutenant Governor for the State of West Virginia. Preceded in
death by his father, Dr. Walter A. Carr; mother, Mrs. Hettie A. Carr; and
brother, James A. Carr. Survivors: wife, Mrs. Pauline Carr of LaFollette;
sons, Walter Allen Carr of Ft. Washington, Md., Phillip Arthur Carr of
Carbondale, Colo., Joseph Edwin Carr of Crescent City, Calif; five

resident of Oak Ridge since 1947. Emma, who was affectionately known to her
family as "Mimi", was a mother and homemaker who was skilled at quilting,
crocheting, knitting, growing flowers, and cooking. She is lovingly
remembered by her family and friends as a generous and hospitable woman. A
long-time member of Central Baptist Church, Oak Ridge. Preceded in death by

Rev. David Probst, a pioneer Welsh Baptist preacher and well known in
Sharon, died at Youngtown last Friday, aged 86 years. He was born in Wales
on Christmas, 1814, and in addition to the Welsh Baptist Church of Youngstown
[he] organized congregations at Niles, Girard, Churchill, Coleburg, Hubbard,
and other places.
Surgeon W. T. McAdam, the youngest son of the late Rev. W. T. McAdam, at
the breaking out of the Civil War pastor of the First Presbyterian Church
here and afterwards chaplain of the 57th Pennsylvania Volunteers, died
recently of yellow fever at Key West, where he was located as a member of the
Army Medical Corps.

Death of Mrs. Blaize - Last Saturday night
at half-past eleven o'clock the death angel visited the home of H. B.
Blaize, in Logan township, and took away the mother, Mrs. Martha Jane
Blaize; after an illness of intense suffering of several weeks, caused by a
stroke of paralysis. The deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John
Borders, who preceded her to the celestial shore several years ago. She was
born June 11, 1828; being 80 years and 9 days old when God relieved her from
her sufferings and claimed her soul as His own. She was united in the bonds
of matrimony to Isaac Blaize in the year 1850. She was the mother of four
children. Jon B. Blaize, superintendent of the schools of Pike County, and
trustee of Logan township at the time of his death; H. B., S. R. and J. W.
Blaize---also nine grand children, and five great grand children who survive
her. For thirty-six years she lived happily with her husband when he was
taken from her by death. She was a devoted member of the Regular Baptist
church of Bethel for thirty-five years. She was one of Pike County's most
highly respected citizens; loved by all who was acquainted with her. Rev.
J. W. Richardson conducted the funeral services at the Bethel church at
three o'clock Sunday afternoon; hundreds of sorrowing friends attending.
Her body lies at rest in Popular Grove cemetery. The highest testimonial
that could be written of her is that as a girl, wife, mother, christian, and
a friend she fully measured up to the highest type---her influence always
being used for that which was elevating and good---a rich legacy left her
children. As a christian servant she has answered her Master's summons to
come up higher and reap the rich reward that awaits her. W. T. H.

HAMPTON, Va. - Edwin T. Parrish of Hampton died of natural causes Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Hampton Veteran Hospital, Hampton. He was 77.
Mr. Parrish was born on Jan. 24, 1922, in Wilmington, Del., the son of the late Edwin T. and Mary Ivory Parrish Sr.
He retired after 21 years of service with the United States Army, as Lt. Col. In the Army Corps of Engineers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Karcher Parrish, on May 21, 1990.
He is survived by a son, Thomas E. Parrish of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Theresa M. Richey of Newport News; a brother, Karl J. Parrish of Wilmington; and two grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fleegle, & Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro, Md.
Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Greensboro Cemetery, Greenboro.
LEWES - Stephen R. Kay of Lewes died of cancer Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in Lewes Convalescent Center, Lewes. He was 54.
Mr. Kay was born on May 14, 1945, in Wilmington, the son of Jean Cashell Kay of Lewes and the late Walter Kay.
He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1963 and attended Oxford Academy in 1964 and 1965 in Pleasantville, N.J. He graduated from Wilmington College with a degree in hotel management.
He retired in 1992 from DuPont, and recently worked for Brighton Suites Hotel until his death.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1449 Kings Hwy., Lewes.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to: Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 600 North DuPont Hwy., Georgetown, DE 19947.
DOVER - Victoria A. Carney of Dover died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 51.
Mrs. Carney was born on Feb. 3, 1948, in Dover, the daughter of Marjorie Hughes Mosley of Dover and the late Thomas Mosley.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Carney was a member of the Immanuel Union Methodist Church, Cheswold.
She is survived by her husband of four years, Garland R. Carney of Dover; two sons, Roger Pritchett and Michael Pritchett, both of Dover; a daughter, Marjorie Hammond of Dover; a sister, Lisa Milligan of Dover; and two grandsons, Wesley Mitchell and Josh Hammond, both of Dover.
Memorial service will be 7 p.m. today at Immanuel Union United Methodist Church, U.S. 13 and Del. 42, Cheswold, where friends may call one hour prior to service.

GREENWOOD - Edward W. "Edd'' Parsons of Greenwood died of congestive heart failure Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 71.
Mr. Parsons retired from the Seaford DuPont plant in 1984 after 35 years of service. He was a supervisor in the BCF area, where he was inspirational in many of the quality systems implemented in the early 1980s.
He loved to spend his leisure time with family and friends and fishing on the Delaware Bay.
Mr. Parsons was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 4-12 for many years, where he taught safe boating programs. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Bridgeville, for 20 years, serving as vestryman and senior warden.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary A. Parsons; two sons, Rhett E. of Fenwick and Scott B. of Milford; and four granddaughters, Kattie, Mallorie, Julie and Jennie.

She was a homemaker.

MARYDEL - Andrea Jean Loatman of Marydel, formerly of Barclay, Md., slipped into the arms of Jesus Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999. She was 19.
Ms. Loatman had attended the Sudlersville (Md.) Elementary and Middle schools.
She had worked for eight months for the Sudlersville Deli in Sudlersville.
Ms. Loatman was very active in sports.
She was a beautiful and very-much-loved young lady who will be greatly missed by all.
Ms. Loatman was a member of the JV soccer team and recorded stats for the boys varsity lacrosse team attending Queen Anne's County (Md.) High School. She also was a member of the high school's choir and a member of the Solid Rock Church in Hartly for 14 years.
She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandmother, Dolly Loatman.
She is survived by her father and stepmother, Donald and Debbie Loatman of Marydel; her mother and stepfather, Janet and Rusty Hewitt of Barclay, Md.; two sisters, Hilary Hewitt and Janette Hewitt, both of Barclay; a brother, Sean Loatman of South Carolina; three stepsisters, Wendy Hewitt and Heather Hewitt, both of Florida, and Carrie Wallace of Marydel; a stepbrother, Shane Wallace of Barclay, Md.; her maternal grandparents, Henry and Betty Lutton of Marydel and Betty L. WILMINGTON - Helen R. Douglas of Wilmington died of natural causes Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington. She was 78.
Mrs. Douglas was born in Dover July 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah Raikes.
She graduated from Delaware State College.
She was a teacher for the Brandywine School District for 35 years, and had retired.Mrs. Douglas was a member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church, Dover, and of Ezion-Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Alpha Pi Chapter.

MASSEY, Md. - James H. Wallace of Massey died of natural causes Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, in the Townsend, Del., home of his son. He was 84.
Mr. Wallace was born Jan. 18, 1915, the son of the late Clarence and Bertha Dixon Wallace. He was a lifetime resident of Massey.
He was employed by the Maryland State Highway Administration for 23 years on the road crew, and as a bridge tender at the Sassafras River Bridge, until his retirement in 1977.
Mr. Wallace enjoyed gardening and baseball.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Virginia Ford Wallace, in 1994.

MILFORD - Charles G. Carter Jr. of Milford died of natural causes Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in the Bryan Center, Wilson, N.C. He was 80.
Mr. Carter was born in Milford, the son of the late Charles G. and Mabel McCullough Carter.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He owned and operated Carter Home Improvements in Milford for many years, before retiring in 1970 due to disability.
Mr. Carter was a member of Temple Lodge 9, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, where he was an instructor. He also was a member of American Legion Post 3, Milford, where he acted as adjutant for 17 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen M. Carter, in 1994; and a daughter, Patricia C. Watkins, in 1999.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Kenneth and Susan Carter of Wilson, N.C., with whom he lived for the past five months; a son-in-law, John Watkins of Milford; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

STOCKTON, Md. - Lillie Mae Ayers Corbin of Stockton died after a long illness Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in her home. She was 69.
Mrs. Corbin was educated in the public schools of Worcester County.
She was employed as a school-bus driver for the Worcester County public schools for a few years, after which she became a domestic engineer.
Mrs. Corbin married Othaniel Corbin Sept. 29, 1969.
She was a member of Mount Wesley United Methodist Church, where she served on the usher board and the finance committee, as a communion steward and member of the United Methodist Women and the Wesley Gospel Singers, and in many other organizations within the church.
Mrs. Corbin was a very loving and caring person.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988; and by a daughter, Iva Richardson, in 1983.
She is survived by three sons and three daughters-in-law, Andrew and Stephanie Richardson of Stockton, Dewayne and Tia Ayers of Wilmington, Del., and Willie and Jo Ann Purnell of Philadelphia; two brothers, Johnny Ayers of Newark and Wilford Ayers of Snow Hill; three sisters, Lola Harmon of Wilmington, Nancy Foreman of Snow Hill and Ada Mills of Selma, Ala.; two godsons, Ronnie Briddell of Wilmington and Dayquan Foreman; a goddaughter, Denise Deshields of Pocomoke City; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

GREENWOOD - William R. "Gummy" Faulkner of Greenwood, formerly of Bowers Beach and Wilmington, died Monday, Oct 4, 1999, in Country Rest Home. He was 90.
Mr. Faulkner was born Aug. 5, 1909, in Wilmington, the son of the late Herman and Annie S. Faulkner.
He was a graduate of Wilmington High School, where he played football for two years,
While still attending Wilmington High, Mr. Faulkner also played semi-professional football for Pen-Del in Kennett Square, Pa., as Delaware had a blue law, which allowed no football games on Sundays. The Pen-Del team went undefeated for five years. He then played with the Penns Grove (N.J.) Red Devils, and played for Allied Kid, Cubs, St. Mary's and the Southside Terrapins. During his football career, Gummy was considered the best running back Delaware ever produced.
He also starred and excelled in baseball, and later in bowling on a local bowling team. On Nov. 14, 1992, he was inducted into the Southside Athletic Association's Sports Hall of Fame.
He and his wife, Edna, owned and operated Faulkner's Pier in Bowers Beach for more than 50 years, before retiring in 1975 and turning the business over to his two daughters and son-in-law, Maureen Irons and Phyllis Kay Moore and William Moore.
He was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing golf and riding a bicycle.
Mr. Faulkner was a member of the Hillcrest-Bellefonte United Methodist Church in Wilmington, and of the Granite-Corinthian Lodge 34, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Edna D. Faulkner, on Aug. 23, 1997.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Phyllis F. and William Moore of Dover and Maureen F. Irons of Milford; four grandchildren, Lauren M. Smith of Hockessin, Gregg Moore of Dover, Stacey Bowen of Milford and Wayne M. Irons Jr. of Frederica; and six great-grandchildren.

DOVER - Patricia Lue "Patti" Isiminger of Dover died of cancer Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in her home. She was 38.
Miss Isiminger was born Dec. 4, 1960, on the Misawa Air Base in Japan, the daughter of Sherlene Isiminger of Dover and the late Capt. Garland "Ike" Isiminger.
She graduated from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, where she received a degree in special education. She also graduated from the Philadelphia School of Culinary Arts and attended Salem College in West Virginia.
She taught for the Devereux Foundation in Devon, Pa., as a psychoeducator; for the Department of Defense in the Vicenza American School in Vicenza, Italy, as a behavior-management specialist; in the Wurzburg American High School in Wurzburg, Germany, as a teacher of learning-impaired students; for Polytech High School, Woodside, as a special-needs instructor; and for the Mountainside Elementary School at Fort Carson, Colo. She also taught homebound students throughout Delaware.
Miss Isiminger volunteered for United Way on the Fund-raising and Allocations Committee; for Planned Parenthood; for the American Red Cross as a certified AIDS instructor; for the Parent-Teacher-Student Association, serving on the Child-Centered Committee; for the Council for Exceptional Children; and for the Humane Society; and served as the Bosnia Refugee Family Assistance Coordinator at Camp Ucka in Croatia.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a brother, Scott Nelson of Dover; three sisters and a brother-in-law, her twin, Cathy Isiminger, of Acworth, Ga., Sandy and Bill Hannon of St. Augustine, Fla., and Shelli Isiminger of Dover; three nephews; a niece; and special uncles and aunts. HARRINGTON - Helen O. Luffman died of pneumonia Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 60.
Mrs. Luffman was born in Dover, the daughter of the late John F. and Florence H. Poore.
She worked as a nurse's aide; she loved to take care of her patients and visit the sick.
Mrs. Luffman was a member of the Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church, where she also helped the Wesleyan Women's Missions.
She loved to crochet, often giving away her crafts as gifts. She also enjoyed eating out with her husband, visiting many local restaurants.
Mrs. Luffman was a very devoted and loving wife who also enjoyed and loved her grandchildren, who were her life. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

Mr. Pruett was born in Sayersville, Va., the son of the late Earl McMinn Pearson Pruett and Amelia Ann Zarilda Shrader Pruett.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
For many years, he worked for Gale Electric in Denton, until 1974. In 1976 he went to work for General Foods in Dover, Del., until retiring in 1988.

MILLINGTON, Md. - Dorothy "Doris" Simon of Millington died of heart failure Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in Memorial Hospital at Easton, Easton. She was 76.
Mrs. Simon was born in Delaware, the daughter of the late John and Ethel Mae O'Neal.
Early in her life, she worked as a riveter and welder on ships during the war effort in the early 1940s.
After returning home, Mrs. Simon went to work for the Acme supermarket in Millington, and worked there several years. She also worked for the Millington Bank until she and her husband purchased the Old Mill Restaurant and operated it for six years. After closing the restaurant, she returned to the Acme market until she began receiving clients in her home, which was the beginning of Simon's Care Home, which she continued to operate for the following 28 years, until her retirement in 1996.
She loved to cook and to spend as much time as possible with family and friends. Homemade ice cream on Sundays following the weekly summer volleyball games was a standard. For many years she enjoyed playing, but most of those who knew her feel she excelled as a spectator with her always-humorous commentary on the game.
Mrs. Simon was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Millington.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, George R. Simon Jr., in 1992; a brother, John O'Neal Jr.; and two sisters, Henrietta Pratt and Ethel Shanahan

LARIMORE, N.D. -- Edith Spearman, 83, Minot, formerly of Larimore, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at home.
Edith Emma Dickinson was born June 25, 1916, the daughter of Walter and Kallie (Williams) Dickinson, in Des Lacs, N.D. She grew up and attended school in Minot. She married Lyall Spearman on Feb. 5, 1940, in Minot. They lived in Larimore, where they farmed before moving to Crookston, where they lived for 15 years. The moved to Honeyford, N.D., and then Winger, Minn., before moving to Minot 25 years ago to care for her sister, Florence Gorze.
She is survived by daughters, Grace Swanson, Larimore, Martha Spear, Aitkin, Minn., Norma Juhlke, Minneapolis, and Jean Snyder, Cheboygan, Mich.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She is survived by daughters, Adrienne (Paul Jr.) Toth and Nancy (Jamie) Dillon, both of Littleton; a son, John, Denver; two granddaughters; sisters, Margaret Stauning, Grand Forks, Lillian Hemenover, Anaheim, Calif., Gladys Rosenberg and Dorothy Fore, both of East Grand Forks, and Helen Schmuckal, Imperial Beach, Calif.; and a brother, Roy Amundson, East Grand Forks. She was preceded in death by brothers, Art Amundson and Don Amundson (Crown Hill Mortuary, Denver).
DEVILS LAKE -- Delbert M. Tollerud, 94, Devils Lake, formerly of Esmond, N.D., died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, in Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Delbert M. Tollerud was born June 23, 1905, the son of Dorph and Marie (Kopperud) Tollerud, in Rich Valley Township, Benson County, N.D., Esmond. He attended school in Esmond, Minnewaukan, Minot and Maddock, N.D. He attended Valley City (N.D.) Normal School and taught at North Fork Rural School, Esmond. He married Elizabeth Grady in 1925 in San Francisco. They farmed in Isabel Township, Benson County, from 1928 to 1942. In 1942, they moved to the D.O. Tollerud farm in Rich Valley until 1969. After retirement, they continued to farm until moving to Devils Lake. Elizabeth Tollerud died in February 1991. He lived in Lake Country Manor before moving to Good Samaritan Center.
He is survived by sons, Gordon (LaVonne), Honolulu, Clayton and Robert (Margaret), both of Devils Lake, and James (Jackie), Aurora, Colo.; daughters, Dorothia (Gordon) Kuist, Klamoth Falls, Ore., and Patricia (Nick) Eberle, San Lorenzo, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman (Helen), Esmond; and a sister, Agnes Moreen, Detroit Lakes, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a daughter and brothers, Arthur, Julian and Richard.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Esmond.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

CROOKSTON -- Ernest O. Ergeson, 91, Crookston, formerly of Shelly, Minn., died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.
Ernest O. Ergeson was born Dec. 29, 1907, the son of Ole and Elsie Ergeson, in Crookston. He married Avis Rognlie on April 9, 1928, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They lived in Crookston, where he worked at the Polk County Court House, retiring in 1969. They then moved to Shelly. Avis Ergeson died in July 1988. He moved to Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston, in 1993.
He is survived by children, Una Rae Riebling, Aurora, Colo., Janis (Ron) Maffia, Pasadena, Md., and Michael (Gloria) Ergeson, Elko, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry; a sister, Francis; and brothers, Al and Art.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Stennes Funeral Chapel, Climax, Minn.
Burial: Shelly Lutheran Cemetery.
GREENBUSH, Minn. -- Helen O. Johnson, 93, Greenbush, formerly of Badger, Minn., died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, in Greenbush Nursing Home, where she had lived for the past four years.
Helen O. Foster was born Oct. 3, 1906, the daughter of Hamlet and Helene (Helgeson) Foster, in Streeter, N.D. She moved with her family to Duxby, Minn., in 1913. She attended school in Duxby, graduating from eighth grade in 1921. She married Elmer Johnson on Dec. 12, 1929. They lived in Duxby until moving to Badger in 1952, where she worked for Johnson's Department Store and Badger Produce Station. Elmer Johnson died June 21, 1987.
She is survived by a daughter, Ruth (Robert) Graff, Greenbush; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Earl; brothers, Elmer and Clarence; and sisters, Lilly Haaland and Margie Tauer.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, Badger.
Visitation: After 5 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Gieseke Funeral Home, Greenbush, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Duxby.
BEMIDJI -- Wilbur E. "Swede" Johnson, 84, Bemidji, died of cancer Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Wilbur E. Johnson was born Dec. 29, 1914, the son of Otto and Lavinia (Arnitz) Johnson, in Bemidji, where he graduated from high school. He attended French's Business College, Bemidji. He served in the 31st Infantry Division from 1941 to 1944. He married Virginia Stenlund on Nov. 18, 1947, in Cass Lake, Minn. They lived in Bemidji, where he worked for the Bemidji Candy Co. for 43 years. He retired in 1979. He was the bookkeeper for Kelsey's As You Like It since 1978.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Jan Johnson, Seattle, Pamela (Michael) Kelsey, Bemidji, Kate (Dave) Kiceina, Ferndale, Wash., and Wendy Seely, Olympia, Wash.; a son, Robert (Gerry), Malvern, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence, Vin and Francis.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday, First Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church, North Country Hospice and House of Hospitality, all in Bemidji (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
INKSTER, N.D. -- Ronald A. Peterson, 44, Inkster, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, in Valley Eldercare, Grand Forks.
Ronald A. Peterson was born Dec. 31, 1954, the son of Raymond and Harriet (Guerard) Peterson, in Grand Forks. He moved to Inkster in 1971. He graduated from high school in Midway, N.D., in 1973 and worked on the family farm in Inkster until 1982. He married Debra Johnson on Dec. 16, 1980, in Grand Forks. He moved to Minneapolis, where he owned RAD Construction Co., and moved back to Inkster in 1995. He owned and operated the Ron Peterson Construction Co., in Grand Forks.
He is survived by daughters, Shanna and Cheryl Peterson, both of Montrose, Minn.; his parents, Inkster; sisters, Diane (Darrin) Hunter, Gilby, N.D., and Vicki (Mark) Hanson, Crookston; a brother, Daniel (Carol), Bismarck; and grandparents, Willard Guerard, Grand Forks, and Sophie Peterson, Puyallup, Wash.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Eugenia Guerard and August Peterson.
Services: 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Christ the King Lutheran Church, East Grand Forks.
