Josie E. Smith
Josie Ellen Smith, 86, of Front Royal, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Mrs. Smith was born July 15, 1913, in Warren County, the daughter of Lena Sealock and Grover Cleveland Rutherford.

She was a member of First Assembly of God, Font Royal, the Front Royal Camp of Gideon's International, and the National Chapter of the AARP.

She was married to Gilbert Daniel Smith.

Surviving are two sons, William G. Smith of Las Cruces, N.M., and Carroll Dennis Smith of Berkeley Springs; a sister, Ann R. Beaty of Front Royal; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Greg Amos officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal.

Pallbearers will be Charles Franklin, Russell Henry, Frankie Knight, Gene Mills, Ralph Murphy, and Michael Sharp.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal.

James Alton Thompson
James Alton Thompson, 81, of Winchester, died Friday, July 7, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Thompson was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Winchester, the son of Alex W. and Lelah E. Shearer Thompson. He was retired from Perry Engineering. He was a member of Wardensville Presbyterian Church.

He was an avid craftsman, crocheter, and painter.

He was married to Pauline Hahn for 38 years.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, C. Kelly Thompson of Brucetown, James A. Thompson II of Loudoun County; a daughter, Donna Patterson of Winchester; a brother, W. Henry Thompson of Winchester; two sisters, Peggy Sirbaugh McKee and Lovelle Sargent, both of Winchester; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. July 15 at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, W.Va.

Memorials may be made to Winchester-Frederick County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 202 N. Washington St., Winchester 22601.

Sgt. Terry L. Plotner
Sgt. Terry L. Plotner, 53, of Herndon, formerly of Stephenson, died June 6, 2000, at his home.

Sgt. Plotner was born Dec. 23, 1946, in Martinsburg, W.Va., the son of Kenneth L. and Mary R. Plotner. He was in the Air Force. He grew up in Stephenson and graduated from James Wood High School.

He was married to Sharon Gobel.

Surviving with his mother, of Roanoke, are a daughter, Robin Lynn Plotner of Radford University; a stepson, Brian C. Plotner of Springfield; a sister, Brenda K. Jones of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother, Vic C. Plotner of Roanoke.

A memorial service was June 9, 2000, in Greene Funeral Home, Herndon. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery on June 15.

Ann L. Masters
Ann L. Masters, 63, of Middletown, died Friday, July 7, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home.

Burial will be private.

Friends may call anytime at the funeral home.

Stevie W. Baldwin
Stevie William Baldwin, 45, of 1569 Whitacre Road, Gore, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Baldwin was born May 21, 1955, in Baltimore, the son of John W. Baldwin and Lillian Lloyd Grimm. He was a carpenter for Kraft Foods in Winchester. He attended Redland United Methodist Church in Cross Junction.

He married Pamela Jean Becker on June 27, 1986, in Albuquerque, N.M.

Surviving with his wife, are his father, of Cross Junction; his mother, of Cumberland; his maternal grandmother, Anna Lloyd of Cumberland; a son, Harold Hammons of Cross Junction; two daughters, Jean Marie Baldwin of Annapolis, Md., and Tammy Fuller of Cross Junction; a brother, John R. Baldwin of Marion, N.C.; a sister, Kathy Hedricks of Cumberland; and six grandchildren.

His stepfather, Joseph A. Grimm, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with the Rev. Jack Julcher officiating. Inurnment will be private at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Malena J. Lee
Malena Jade Lee, infant daughter of Kenneth Wayne Lee Jr. and Angela Lawhorne Lee, of 991 E. Washington St., Strasburg, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

She was born July 1, 2000, in Winchester.

Surviving with her parents, are a sister, Savannah Grace Lee; her maternal grandparents, Paul Cecil and Lena Ramsey Lawhorne of Roseland; her paternal grandparents, Kenneth W. and Joanne Frank Lee of Afton; and her maternal great-grandmother, Christy Bell Lawhorne of Arlington.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Paul Phillips officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

Wanda E. Smallwood
Wanda “Pinky” Elizabeth Smallwood, 55, of 209 Chalmers Court, Apt. 1A, Berryville, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Smallwood was born May 21, 1945, in Clarke County, the daughter of Lemiel Crim and Beulah Bayliss Kackley.

She was married to James Smallwood Jr., who died March 13, 1973.

Surviving wtih her mother, of Stephenson, are a son, Kevin Smallwood of Berryville; two daughters, Shannon Stokes of Winchester and Paula Unger of Berryville; a brother, Ray Crim of Bluemont; three sisters, Maxine Boyd of Arizona, Janet Hummer of Charles Town, W.Va., and Linda Smallwood of Albin; a stepbrother, William Briggs of South Carolina; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Harvey Warnick officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Rob Amick, Charlie Baker, Johnny Foreman, James Ferguson, Ronald Didawick, and Kim Feltner.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Mary S. Rollings
Mary Stewart Rollings, 88, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Rose Hill Nursing Home, Berryville.

Mrs. Rollings was born Aug. 2, 1911, in Wardensville, the daughter of Benjamin and Susan Rinard Stewart. She was a member of Wardensville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed hunting and fishing.

She married Dr. Harry W. Rollings Jr. in 1942. Dr. Rollings died in 1968.

Surviving are a stepson, Ted Rollings of Stephens City; two stepdaughters, Mary Lou McQuail and Janet R. Thomas, both of Richmond; and two stepgrandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, with the Rev. Luther “Nip” Crites officiating. Burial will be in Greenfield Cemetery, Wardensville.

Pallbearers will be Gary Hott, Steve Stewart, Alvin Smith, Arnold Fishel, Billy Rinard, and Andy Rinard.

Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. today at Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Lucy V. Strother
Lucy Virginia Strother, 83, formerly of Winchester, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, in Lexington.

Miss Strother was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Gainesboro, the daughter of Harry Lee and Blanche Smith Strother.

Surviving are a brother, John R. Strother of Frederick County; and two sisters, Ella Baughman of Silver Spring, Md., and Mary Jane Williams of Winchester.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating.

Friends may call anytime Sunday at the chapel of Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City.

Gary R. Wolford
Gary Russell Wolford, 64, of 735 S. Kent St., Winchester, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Wolford was born March 8, 1936, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the son of Harry and Ida Lewis Wolford.

He was an auto mechanic for the Emmart Oil Co. in Winchester and had served in the Air Force for 13 years.

Surviving are three sons, Gary R. Wolford II and Danny Wolford, both of Oregon, and Timothy Wolford of Winchester; two daughters, Melody Moran and Staci Wolford, both of Oregon; a brother, Arlen Wolford of Missouri; three sisters, Iris Snyder of Stephenson, Deloris Ridgeway of Maurertown, and Marilee Lewis of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; and 12 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Branch Mountain Cemetery, Three Churches, W.Va., with the Rev. Gregory R. Kenney officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

John J. Bradley
John J. Bradley, 48, formerly of White Post, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Bradley was born Feb. 6, 1952, in White Post, the son of Junior Bradley and Gladys Smith.

He was an Army veteran.

Surviving with his mother, of Winchester, are three sisters, Diane Turner of Leesburg, Lowane Green of Winter Haven, Fla., and Joyce Green; and a brother, Alfred Smith Jr. of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cartwright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Franklin S. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Charles “Buster” Jackson Community Cemetery, White Post.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

John D. Brown
John D. “Big Jim” Brown, 52, of 614 Gray Ave., Winchester, died Monday, July 3, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Brown was born June 23, 1948, in Winchester, the son of Anna Bell Brown. He was a member of John Mann United Methodist Church, Winchester.

He was married to Shelby Baltimore.

Surviving with his wife, are a stepdaughter, Alice Carperter of Dallas; two stepsons, Larry Ferguson of Naples, Fla., and Eugene Baltimore of Woodstock; a sister, JoAnne B. Chambers of Winchester; two brothers, Sammy Brown of Berryville and Warren Brown of Winchester; and three step grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at John Mann United Methodist Church, Winchester, with the Rev. John G. Scott Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Cartwright Funeral Home.

Paula J. Hottle
Paula Jean Bowers Hottle, 38, of Winchester, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Hottle was born Sept. 2, 1961, in Winchester, the daughter of Ray A. and Pauline Strosnider Bowers.

She worked at McDonald’s restaurant on Route 11 North.

She was a 1979 graduate of James Wood High School and a member of Winchester Eagles Aerie 824.

Surviving with her mother, of Winchester, are a daughter, Tara Lynn Pitcock, at home; and a sister, Carol Hawkins of Bunker Hill, W.Va.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday in Mount Olive Cemetery, Frederick County, with the Rev. Paul E. Shallenburg officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of the service at Omps Funeral Home.

Veda Kees Stuck
Veda “Tootie” Kees Stuck, 78, of Winchester, formerly of Hedgesville, W.Va., died Monday, July 3, 2000, in Integrated Health Services, Charles Town, W.Va.

Mrs. Stuck was born July 31, 1921, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the daughter of John Harrison Kees and Della Cain Kees. She was the former owner and operator of Tootie’s Place on Rock Cliff Drive and formerly worked at Crown, Cork and Seal.

Surviving are three daughters, Betty Shearer of Winchester, Donna Palmer of Glen Burnie, Md., and Eva “Dee” Graham of Gerradstown, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Louise Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Central Chapel Cemetery, Ganotown, W.Va.

Encie V. Ward
Encie V. Ward, 74, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Cross Junction, died June 28, 2000, in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Ward was born Sept. 8, 1925, in Cross Junction, the daughter of Earnest and Pearl Tinsman.

She was a member of Mountain View Church of Christ.

She was married to Vernon E. Ward.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Frances Ward of Jacksonville; two sisters, Wanda Lofthus of Arlington and Linda Tinsman of Cross Junction; and two brothers, Andrew T. Tinsman Sr. of Cross Junction and Earnest C. Tinsman of Beddington, W.Va.

Burial will be in Culpeper National Cemetery at a later date.

Duval County Cremation Society, Jacksonville, is handling arrangements.

Kathleen M. Curl
Kathleen Moorman Curl, 91, of Front Royal, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal.

Mrs. Curl was born in Sept. 11, 1908, in Warren County, the daughter of Pomp and Senora Partlow Moorman. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Front Royal.

Surviving are a son, James W. Curl Jr. of Front Royal; two grandchildren; and a great-grand daughter.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark R. Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Front Royal.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal.

James W. Fury Sr.
James Wilbur Fury Sr., 86, of Augusta, W. Va., died Monday, July 3, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 23, 1914, in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Riley Fury. He was a veteran of World War II.

He was married to Juanita Henry, who died in 1967.

He is survived by three sons, James Fury Jr., and Glen Fury, both of Augusta, W.Va., and Charles Fury of Alexandria; three daughters, Kathy Fury of Tampa, Fla., Doric Clatterbuck of Staunton, and Janie Fury of Maryland; one stepdaughter, Dorothy Boone of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.; two sisters, Lucille Sparks of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., and Hazel Sizemore of Jerrys Run; and one brother, Johnny Fury of White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the McKee Funeral Home Chapel in Augusta, W.Va. A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, with Minister Cliff Rayburn officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home.

George W. Lambert
George W. “Chuck” Lambert, 53, of Kearneysville, W.Va., died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Lambert was born Dec. 31, 1946, in Richmond, the son of George E. and Elsie Wells Lambert. He worked at General Motors Corp. and was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

He owned and raised thoroughbred horses.

He was married to Teresa “Terry” Dearing.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Michelle Dezan of Winchester; two brothers, Edwin Lambert and James Lambert, both of Winchester; a stepson, Colton Stonebreaker; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va., with the Rev. Douglas J. Hollida officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

William H. Patterson Jr.
William Henderson Patterson Jr., 59, of Berryville, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000 at a local nursing home.

Mr. Patterson was born Dec. 8, 1940, in El Paso, Texas, the son of William Henderson and Harriet Franklin Patterson. He worked as a security guard in the petroleum industry.

Surviving with his mother in Ellicott City, Md., are a son, Thomas Patterson of Clifton, N.J.; a daughter, Patricia Patterson, of Clifton, N.J.; a brother, George Patterson of Berryville; and a sister, Hallie P. Crouch of Ellicott City, Md.

A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with the Rev. Canon Dwight L. Brown officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester, Va. 22601, or American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 85, Berryville, Va., 22611.

Arrangements are being handled by the Enders and Shirley Funeral Homes and Crematory, Berryville.

John G. Prunty
John Gavin Prunty, 46, of 301 White Clover Drive, Winchester, died June 25, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Prunty was born Dec. 4, 1953, in Redwood City, Calif., the son of John W. Prunty and Anita Vidal Prunty-Decker. He was the director of sales of the National Wildlife Federation and was retired from the Air Force, with the rank of major.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in languages from Virginia Tech.

He was a member of the Winchester Chamber of Commerce and the Winchester Host Lions Club.

He played trombone in the Front Royal Community Band.

Surviving with his mother, of Front Royal, are a son, Jared Gavin Prunty of Winchester; a daughter, Ashley Heather Prunty of Winchester; a sister, Patricia Prunty of New York; and a brother, James Prunty of Washington, D.C.

A Rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.

A reception will follow the memorial service at Holiday Inn, U.S. 50 East, Winchester.

Memorials may be made to the Friends of Gavin Prunty, c/o Peter Ward, 9806 Bridleridge Court, Vienna 22181.
