William E. Jackson Jr.
William Edgar “Bill” Jackson, 74, of 5 Rockcroft Drive, Berryville, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Jackson was born May 18, 1925, in Berryville, the son of William Edgar Jackson Sr. and Catherine L. Kennan Jackson. He retired from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after 37 years and was a part-time employee of Enders & Shirley Funeral Home. He was an Army veteran of World War II with the rank of corporal. He served in the Pacific Theatre and received the Purple Heart.

He was a member of Berryville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He helped organize youth sports in Berryville and served as a coach for baseball football and basketball. For 27 years he was a Scoutmaster for Troop 34 and was awarded the Order of the Arrow and Silver Beaver. He also was a member of VFW Post 9760, American Legion Post 41, the Clarke County Ruritan Club, and John H. Enders Fire and Rescue Company.

He married Beulah “Boots” White Jackson on July 14, 1946, in Berryville.

Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Connie J. Childs of Berryville; a brother Charles A. Jackson of Berryville; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with Dr. William E. Ingram officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Clarke County Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be members of the Clarke County Ruritan Club.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Violet M. Cavan
Violet Madeline “Granny” Cavan, 73, of Green Street, Winchester, died Saturday, April 30, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Cavan was born April 22, 1927, in Romney, W.Va., the daughter of James and Anna Ganoe. She had worked as a waitress at the Travelodge of Winchester.

She married John E. Cavan on Oct. 9, 1983, in Winchester.

Surviving with her husband are five daughters, Nadine Sanderson of Reedville, Cynthia Ann Pratt of Whiting Vermont, Joan Marie Ridenour of Pasadena, Md., Robin Lee Maloney of Naples, Fla., and Beverly Lee Rule of Middlebury, Vt.; two sisters, Audrey Dawson and Stellaa Buckley, both of Romney; and 16 grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel, with pastor David R. Witt officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Pownall, Tom Ganoe, Jim Ganoe, Elwood Ganoe, Thomas Sanderson, Ralph Sanderson, and Monty Miller, and Edward Faryniarz.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight and 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Roy L. Andrews Jr.
Roy Lee Andrews Jr., 44, of White Oak Road, Round Hill, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Andrews was born March 3, 1956, in Winchester, the son of Roy Lee and Virginia Ritenour Andrews.

He was a heavy equipment operator for William A. Hazel Construction Co. in Chantilly.

Surviving with his mother, of Winchester, are a daughter, Julia Lee Andrews Chapman of Winchester; two sons, Roy Lee Shell of Berryville and Ripley Edward Andrews of Slanesville, W.Va.; four sisters, Mary Lantz of Martinsburg, W.Va., Kathye Trenary of Charles Town, W.Va., Nancy Andrews of Front Royal, and Judy Mason of Winchester; three brothers, Otis Andrews and Douglas Kelly, both of Winchester, and David Kelly of Timberville; and a grandson.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Isaac L. Luttrell, D.D., officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove United Methodist Cemetery, Frederick County.

Pallbearers will be James Dill, Bernard Thompson, Harry Andrews Jr., Dale Lantz, Scott Dunlap, and Otis Andrews II.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Billie J. Bell
Billie Jean Bell, 56, of 294 N. Hayfield Road, Winchester, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Bell was born July 22, 1943, in Cumberland, Md., the daughter of Richard Eugene and Emma George Atkinson.

She was office manager for the Foot & Ankle Center and a 1961 graduate of Fort Hill High School.

She attended Melvin United Methodist Church.

She was married to Jerry Bell.

Surviving with her husband, and her mother, of Cumberland, Md., are two sons, Stephen Randall and Michael Shane Bell, both of Winchester; and two brothers, Richard E. Atkinson Jr. of Carpendale, W.Va., and Randy Atkinson of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, Cumberland, with the Rev. Daniel Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Bettie A. Funkhouser
Bettie A. Funkhouser, 69, of Chapel Road, Middletown, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Funkhouser was born May 6, 1930, in Lost River, W.Va., the daughter of Stanley and Ruth Moore Combs.

She was a former member of Carpers Valley United Methodist Church and was superintendent of Sunday school.

She married Jimmy R. Funkhouser on Dec. 22, 1952, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with her husband, are two sons, Jamie R. Funkhouser of Stephens City and Miles S. Funkhouser of Middletown; a niece, Marie Lineberg, and a nephew, Bizzy Cochran, both of Winchester, whom she raised; a brother, Donald M. Combs of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Jones Funeral Home, Stephens City, with the Rev. C. Mitchell Emswiler officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Lost River.

Pallbearers will be Leonard Bauserman Jr., Richard Stickley, Gilbert Strosnider, Rick Lineberg, Donnie Cochran, and Carl Strosnider.

C. Herbert Benson
C. Herbert Benson, 72, of 14 Cedar Road, Strasburg, died August 28 at his home.

Mr. Benson was born July 17, 1927 in Washington D.C., a son of William Prescott and Mary Jane Johnson Benson. He was a member of the Strasburg Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and chairman of the Christian Education Commmittee; a member of Westminster Brotherhood, a member of the Board of Review of Boy Scout Troop 57. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy. He was retired from the Government Affairs Office of Texas Gas Transmission Corp., Washington, D.C.

Surviving are his wife, Mary “Polly” Quinlan Benson; four daughters, Jean Benson Bernstein of Salem, Mass., Mary Benson of Malmsheim, Germany, Sara Benson of Boulder, Colo., and Suzanne Benson of Seattle, Wash.; two step-daughters, Valerie Kelly of Middleburg and Paula Wash of Napa, Calif.; two step-sons, John Longo of Ajax, Ontario, and Richard Longo of Romney, W.Va.; three sisters, Elizabeth Coleman of Denver, Pa., Mary J. Beem of Berea, Ohio, and Carol Milligan of Sidney, Ohio; one brother, William P. Benson of Baltimore; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Strasburg Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery with military honors by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77, Strasburg.

Pallbearers will be Charles R. Daly, Denis J. Driscoll, Lawrence C. Hogan, Joseph A. Lukowski, and William A. Scates.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Stover Funeral Home.

Philip B. Good
Philip Burns Good, 70, of 2 East Crescent St., Boyce, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Good was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Millwood, the son of Lester Martin and Myrtle Beulah Kent Good. He was a department leader for Abex Friction Products for 41 years.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of United Auto Workers Local 149.

He and his wife, Betty Viola Good, were married March 13, 1954, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife, are three daughters, Gail Carpenter and Joyce Lynn Riley, both of Winchester, and Jo Ann Clark of Leesburg; three sons, Philip B. Good Jr. and Luke M. Good, both of Winchester, and Mark A. Good of Boyce; four sisters, Gladys Ragsdale and Margaret O’Brien, both of Berryville, Ella Sue Smith of Rockland, Maine, and Frances Fox of Winchester; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with the Rev. Jay Kelchner officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, with military honors by the Clarke County Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Clifford Grimsley, Jack Smith, Rocky Lane Grimsley, Rufus C. Good Jr., Arthur Stewart, and Billy Shaw.

Russell W. Anderson
Russell W. “Andy” Anderson, 74, of 817 Plainview Drive, Shelbyville, Ky., died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, near White Sulfur Springs, W.Va.

Mr. Anderson was born Sept. 16, 1925, in Frederick County, the son of George W. and Jessie McElwee Anderson.

He was a manager with Kentucky Utilities for 41 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member and deacon of Shelbyville First Baptist Church and a member of Howard Lodge 15 of the Odd Fellows.

Surviving are two sons, Russell Wayne Anderson of Shelbyville and Lee Roy Anderson of Griffith, Ind.; four sisters, Lois McKee and Jessie Brumback, both of Winchester, and Alice Wood and Marilyn Brewer, both of Long Branch, N.J.; two brothers, Andrew W. Anderson and Charles D. Anderson, both of Winchester; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Shelbyville First Baptist Church, with Dr. Ed Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Shannon Funeral Home, Shelbyville, and after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity or to the Henderson House of the First Baptist Church, Shelbyville.

Clarence R. Williams
Clarence Raymond Williams, 65, of 393 Cardinal St., Strasburg, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Williams was born May 31, 1934, in Strasburg, the son of the Rev. Donald F. Williams and Phyllis Corthelia Banks Williams. He was retired from Atlantic Auto as a master machinist.

He was an Army veteran and a member of Esbie Baptist Church.

Surviving are eight sisters, Pearl L. Johnson of Philadelphia, Anna Mae Jackson and Minister Frances L. Stewart, both of Strasburg, Selma C. Jackson of Fredericksburg, Mildred J. Foster of Dimock, Pa., Cecelia M. Williams of Delaplane, Janice J. Tyler of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Bernice J. Washington of Highland Springs; and two brothers, Donald Frederick Williams Jr. of Beltsville, Md., and Paul D. Williams of Temple Hills, Md.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Esbie Baptist Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. Bessie L. Jett officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, Front Royal, with military honors.

Pallbearers will be nephews: Wesley Williams, Larry Williams, Donald White, Norris Tyler III, and James Jones.

Bertha L. Smith
Bertha Lee Smith, 98, of Baker, W.Va., died Monday, April 24, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 6, 1901, in Rio, W.Va., the daughter of David and Julie Gochenour Dove. She was the oldest member of Zion Lutheran Church in Baker.

She was married to William Henry Smith, who died April 13, 1953.

Surviving are two sons, Orvin “Charlie” Smith of Baker and Lenard “Dit” Smith of Wardensville, W.Va.; two sisters, Betty Anderson of High View, W.Va., and Thelma King of Charles Town, W.Va.; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, Baker, with Pastor Russell Yoak officiating. Burial will be in Zion Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Billy Smith, Ricky Smith, Lenard Smith Jr., Alton Smith, David Smith, Jerry Anderson, and Michael Smith.

Margaret A. Tumblin
Margaret Agnes “Nanny” Tumblin, 71, of Leesburg, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Tumblin was married to Latha Tumblin.

Surviving are five children, William Tumblin and JoAnn Fields of Leesburg, Charles Tumblin of Stephens City, Margaret Anderson of Winchester, and Sylvia Payne of Warrenton; a sister, Helen Groves of Stephens City; a brother, Preston Birkett of Stephens City; 15 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Royston Funeral Home, Middleburg, with Pastor Robert Warnick officiating. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Upperville.

Clyde B. Bordwine
Clyde Benton Bordwine, 84, of 336 George Street, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 in the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Bordwine was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Russell County, the son of Joe Freemont and Lakie Hickey Bordwine.

He was employed by Godfrey Volkswagen in the auto parts department, retiring in 1980. He was a graduate of Mary Dalton Frye Private Business School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a second class, petty officer in the Navy.

He was married to Blanche Montgomery on December 6, 1937 in Abingdon.

Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Joan Bly of Stephens City; two sons, Christopher Bordwine of Bristol and Bill Bordwine of Wilmington, N.C; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville with Pastor Ray Rolen officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring.

F. Elizabeth Vance
Florence Elizabeth McDonald Vance, 67, of Chantilly, formerly of Front Royal, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, in Fair Oaks Hospital, Chantilly.

Mrs. Vance was born May 25, 1932, in Warren County, the daughter of Iva Mae Tanner and Robert Frank McDonald.

She was a secretary at Chantilly High School.

She was a member of Fairfax Education Association, the Fairfax Association of Educational Personnel and the Office Personnel Advisory Council.

She was married to William C. Vance for 46 years.

Surviving with her husband, are a daughter, Karen “Terri” Teresa Vance of Chantilly; and a brother, Robert F. McDonald of Panama City, Fla.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. William Withers and Father Marcus Pollard officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Ray McDonald, Joe-Lauck Weakley, Roger McDonald, Carroll McDonald, Johnny Davis, John Vance, Don Hilton, and David Thurston.

Mary Lee Sencindiver
Mary Lee Sencindiver, 47, of 349 S. Fort St., Strasburg, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Ms. Sencindiver was born April 18, 1953, in Frederick, Md., the daughter of John Frederick and Eva Lee Sencindiver. She was a graduate of Yorktown High School in Alexandria and a member of Strasburg Presbyterian Church.

Surviving with her mother, of Strasburg, are three brothers, John Frederick Sencindiver III of Vienna, Steven White Sencindiver of Chantilly, and Scott Crim Sencindiver of Strasburg; and a sister, Susan Lee McGinn of Manassas.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverview Cemetery, with the Rev. David Howard officiating.

Genevieve L. Berger
Genevieve Lucille Berger, 68, of 9 West Hart St., Winchester, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Berger was born Aug. 7, 1931, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Esther Berger Gaither.

She was a member of the Jolly Poodles Club, John Mann United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of Maggie Farrar Desmond Temple 760, and the Rainbow Council of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia.

Surviving with her mother, are a son, Charles Richard Berger of Stephens City; two brothers, William Washington Jr. and David Washington, both of Washington, D.C; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral was Monday at John Mann United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lorenzo Hill Sr. officiating. Burial was in Locust Grove Cemetery, Stephens City.

Edward E. Haley
Edward Elmore Haley, 86, of 102 E. Main St., Apt. E10, Berryville, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mr. Haley was born Oct. 6, 1913, in Salem, the son of James and Lula Barber Haley. He was a retired farmer and farm caretaker.

He was a member of Leesburg Christian Fellowship.

He married Charlotte Owens on Dec. 31, 1945, in Front Royal.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Leslie Allen Haley of Berryville and Robert Elmore Haley of Lorain, Ohio; a daughter, Peggy L. Haley of Leesburg; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with Pastor Ronnie Beeler and Pastor Larry Cochran officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Nettie F. Hoover
Nettie Frances Nickleson Hoover, 69, of 2648 Martinsburg Pike, Stephenson, died Saturday, April 22, 2000.

Mrs. Hoover was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Winchester, the daughter of Earl Jackson and Lillian Lee Smith Nickleson.

Surviving are two sons, Larry T. Hoover of Stephenson and James E. Hoover of Fort Bragg, N.C.; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Spence of Winchester; a sister, Nancy C. Simpson of Jacksonville, Fla.; four brothers, Ray O. Nickleson and Acy L. Nickleson, both of Winchester, Earl J. Nickleson of Kittery, Maine, and Ralph Nickleson of Augusta, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A son, Gibson R. Hoover Jr., is deceased.

A private service is planned.
