Frances E. Gant
Frances Edmonia Gant, 81, of Winchester, formerly of Bunker Hill, W.Va., died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Winchester Manor.

Mrs. Gant was born Feb. 2, 1919, in Berkeley County, W.Va., the daughter of Floyd C. and Annie Williams Dorman. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Bunker Hill.

Surviving is a sister, Betty Jackson, of Winchester.

A funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, W.Va., with the Rev. Arthur Patterson and the Rev. Peter Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Noah E. Helman
Noah Edward Helman, 93, of Purgitsville, W.Va., died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Helman was born July 15, 1906, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the son of James S. and Rose Mae Leatherman Helman.

He was a lifelong farmer.

He was married to Bertha Mae Miller, who died March 13, 1995.

Surviving are a daughter, Beatrice “Toodie” C. High of Purgitsville; and a grandson.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, W.Va., with the Rev. Herman Goede and the Rev. Steve Blaisdell officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.

Helen M. Hicks
Helen Montgomery Hicks, 92, of Unger, W.Va., formerly of Arlington, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Hicks was born Nov. 30, 1907, in Ashburn, the daughter of William and Julia Garrett Weeks.

She had worked as an operator with C&P Telephone Co. in Washington, D.C.

She was a member of the Baptist faith.

She was married to Leonard David Hicks.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Arlene LaFalam of Roseville, Calif., Marsha F. Cox of Unger, and Dottie M. Benson of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two sons, David C. Hicks of Arlington and Leonard E. Hicks of Winchester; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A son, Donald C. Peacher, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with the Rev. Robert S. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in National Memorial Park, Falls Church.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Jeraldine V. Moore
Jeraldine Virginia Moore, of 101 Plantation Drive, Winchester, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Moore was born in Zepp, the daughter of Hermace and Fannie Herbaugh Orndorff. She was a member the Methodist faith.

Surviving are a son, Patrick H. Tevalt of Winchester; a daughter, Mary E. Sager of Wilmington, N.C; a sister, Katie Whittington of Woodstock; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A daughter, JoAnn Tevalt, is deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with Pastor Doug Wright officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Barbour, Michael Buzby, Stanley Wallace, Russell Oates, Brian Oates, and Robert A. Carter.

Thelma E. Welch
Thelma Elizabeth “Sis” Morehead Welch, 75, of 939 Happy Creek Road, Front Royal, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Welch was born April 23, 1924, in Botetourt County, the daughter of Daniel Clayton and Mary Frances St. Clair Morehead. She was retired from the former FMC Corp. in Front Royal after 35 years.

She was a member of Happy Creek United Methodist Church, Front Royal, and the National Chapter of the AARP.

She was married to Samuel Cooke “Cookie” Welch Jr.

Surviving are a son, Samuel Cooke Welch III of Richmond; a daughter, Caprice “Cappy” Welch Hough of Front Royal; two brothers, Leonard “Brother” Morehead and Bobbie Morehead, both of Shady Side, Md.; three sisters, Alleen Peffer and Genevieve Morehead, both of Middletown, and Sandra Walker of Winchester; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick, with Pastor Theresa Hoffman officiating.

Friends may call anytime at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Della M. Ogden
Della Mabel Ogden, 95, of 170 Shepherds Mill Road, Berryville, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Ogden was born July 29, 1904, in Webster County, W.Va., the daughter of John Richard and Melvina Cogar Chapman.

She was a member of the Methodist faith.

She married James Marvin Ogden on Feb. 1, 1925, in Helvetia, W.Va. Mrs. Ogden died Oct. 30, 1988.

Surviving are a daughter, Opal Hall of Berryville; a son, James J. Ogden of French Creek, W.Va.; two sisters, Avis Hawkins of Buchannon, W.Va., and Ruth Fisher of Glenville, W.Va.; two brothers, Gorman T. Chapman of Corvallis, Ore., and Johnny Chapman of West Miffling, Pa.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Robert Tomblyn & Sons Funeral Home, Buckhannon, W.Va., with the Rev. James Huff officiating. Burial will be in Rock Cave Cemetery, Rock Cave, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be Jesse Huff, Marvin Chapman, James Chapman, Duane Ogden, Jerry Ogden, and Tom Ogden.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Robert Tomblyn & Sons Funeral Home.

John J. Bowers
John Joseph Bowers, 85, of HC 64 Box 201, Wardensville, W.Va., died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Bowers was born on Oct. 9, 1914 in Perry, W.Va, the son of the late Joseph Franklin and Mollie Heishman Bowers.

He was married to Mildred Hott Bowers on Dec. 26, 1951, in Wardensville. Mrs. Bowers died on Sept. 19, 1999.

He was a member of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wardensville, W.Va.

Mr. Bowers served in the Army during World War II. He was in the first Armor Division in North Africa and Italy. He was also Master Mason of Moorefield Lodge No. 29, a life member of the Wardensville VFW Post No. 2102, and a charter member of the Wardensville Lions Club.

Mr. Bowers worked as a field inspector of the Motor Carrier Division for the Public Service Commission of W.Va.

Surviving is one son, Joseph R. Bowers.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wardensville. Internment will be at the Greenfield Cemetery in Wardensville.

Pallbearers will be Julian Hott, Greg Hott, R.J. Coffman, Michael Funkhouser, Mitch Orndorff, and Dennis Dale.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Loy-Giffin Funeral Home in Wardensville.

Alec C. Gunter
Alec Clabe “Bud” Gunter, 82, of Welltown Road, Clearbrook, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Gunter was born Aug. 30, 1917, in Cleveland, Miss., the son of Charles and Bessie Gunter.

He retired in 1997 as owner of Bottlers Inc. Ltd. in Clearbrook. He was manager of quality control and then president of Tru Ade Co. of Elgin, Ill., where he had worked from 1947 to 1963. He held two U.S. patents.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served as an engineer and line officer in the amphibious forces. He was engineering officer on the USS Stoddard, with the rank of lieutenant.

He was a member of Genoa Masonic Lodge 288 in Genoa, Ill., for more than 50 years.

His wife of 51 years, Marjorie Ruth Gunter, died March 22, 1995.

Surviving are three daughters, Cheryl G. Wilson of New Castle, Del., Georgene A. Gunter-Middleton of Clearbrook, and Sandi G. Burgoyne of San Diego; a son, Alec Craig Gunter of Winchester; a sister, Mozel Betty Arnold of Chicago; a brother, Charles Gunter of Chicago; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned.

John Henry Parker Jr.
John Henry Parker Jr., 81, of Romney W.Va., died Friday, March 17, 2000, at his residence.

Mr. Parker was born July 12, 1918, in Romney, W.Va., the son of the late John Henry and Kate Parker Sr.

Mr. Parker was a 1936 graduate of Romney High School. He also attended Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., and West Virginia University.

He was a life-long farmer and provided on-the-farm training to military veterans. He was also employed as a school bus driver by the Hampshire County Board of Education for 12 years and retired in 1976 from the West Virginia Department of Highways as a weigh master.

He served in the Army Air Corps. during World War II in the European Theater and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Wappocomo Post 1101 in Romney.

Mr. Parker was the past president of the Hampshire County Farm Bureau; past president the Millcreek Ruritan Club; and past vice chairman of the Hampshire County Republican Executive Committee. He also held a private pilot license.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years Ruth Harmison Parker; one son David Renick Parker; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Shaffer Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Reece officiating. Interment will be at the Indian Mound Cemetery in Romney.

The family will receive friends at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Daniel Wessel
Daniel Wessel, 62, of P.O. Box 134, Bloomery, W.Va., died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Wessel was born Sept. 29, 1937, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Charles and Helen Walters Wessel. He was retired from Briggs & Stratton.

Surviving are his wife, Marcia A. Wessel; a daughter, Trisha Brooks of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; two sons, Daniel Wessel of Milwaukee and Sando Wessel of Germantown, Wis.; and three grandchildren.

A private service is planned for today. Burial will be in Augusta Cemetery, Augusta, W.Va.

McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, is handling arrangements.

Otis D. Sager
Otis Davis Sager, 83, of HC-83, Box 12A, Lost River, W.Va., died Friday, March 17, 2000, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg.

Mr. Sager was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Trout Run, W.Va., the son of Hosea Davis Sager and Annie Elizabeth Ridenour Sager. He was a saw mill operator. He was a member and trustee of Union Church of the Brethren of Trout Run.

He married Ruby Kathleen Bare on Feb. 25, 1935, in Harrisonburg.

Surviving with his wife, are eight daughters, Betty Miller, Carol Bailey, Catherine See, and Sandra Barb, all of Mathias, W.Va., Patsy Dove of Broadway, Nancy Fitzwater of Rio, W.Va., and Phyllis Yeakey and Barbara Robinson, both of Lost River, W.Va; two sons, Michael D. Sager and Larry D. Sager, both of Lost River; a sister, Judy Miller of Lost River; a brother, Tony Sager of Lost River; 22 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McKee Funeral Home, Baker, W.Va., with the Rev. Olin Bailey and the Rev. Wayne Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Sager family Cemetery, Lost River.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home, where friends may call anytime this afternoon.

Lawrence D. Foster
Lawrence Douglas “Doug” Foster, 64, of Front Royal, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at his home.

Mr. Foster was born Sept. 17, 1935, in Rappahannock County, the son of William Edward and Gertrude Nichols Foster.

He was a retired sheet metal worker in the Washington, D.C., area and a Navy veteran.

He was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 101, the American Legion, and the VFW.

He married Frances Catherine Cave on Sept. 5, 1958.

Surviving with his wife, are two daughters, Tammy Lynn Bolden of Orlando, Fla., and Donna Marie Sullivan of Front Royal; a son, Brian Edward Foster of Front Royal; a sister, Frances M. Spain; four brothers, William E. Foster, Howard D. Foster, Paul J. Foster, and Daniel A. Foster; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. Jerry Young officiating. Burial will be in Bennett’s Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Marty Funk, Elmer Williams, Lewis “Peanut” Tharp, Steven Sager, Dr. Richard Nanna, Danny Silvous, Bruce Ring, and Steven Sager.

Alice E. Cain
Alice Elizabeth Cain, 74, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Cain was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Jones Springs, W.Va., the daughter of Samuel Joseph and Mary Beulah Clem Kyne.

She retired in 1983 from Hartz Sewing Factory in Brunswick, Md. She had been a seamstress with London Fog Manufacturing in Hancock, Md., during the 1970s.

She attended public schools in Berkeley County.

Surviving are three sons, Charles Ray Cain of Augusta, W.Va., David R. Cain of Manassas, and Terry Wayne Cain of Chambersburg, Pa.; a daughter, Sharon K. Davis of Berkeley Springs; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Dan Howard officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hattie P. Brown
Hattie Pearl Brown, 84, of 22 Blackburn St., Berryville, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Brown was born Nov. 20, 1915, in West Point, Ga., the daughter of Jack and Lucy Lewis Jackson Brewer. She was retired as a nursing assistant and earned a nursing assistant certificate from Winchester Memorial Hospital in 1966.

She was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church.

She was married to Thomas Jefferson Brown, who died Nov. 13, 1960.

Surviving are three daughters, Anne B. Clarke of Washington, D.C., Lucia B. Wilson and Joan B. Payne, both of Berryville; a sister, Helen Reese of West Point, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

Two sons, Master Sgt. Thomas J. Brown and John B. Brown, are deceased.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Baptist Church, Berryville, with the Rev. Charles Dekle officiating. Burial will be in Milton Valley Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be John “Sonny” Brown, Wayman Davis, Paul Moore, Otis Harper, Page Williams, and Steve Washington.

John W. Hockman Jr., 74, of West Point, died Monday, March 13, 2000, in West Point.

Surviving with his wife, Maurine O. Hockman, are a daughter, Alison H. Freeland of Keysville; his mother, Lelia Hockman of Strasburg; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg, with the Rev. Thord Einerson officiating.

Eufa K. Sisler
Eufa Kaufman Sisler, 83, of 19 Richards Ave., Winchester, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Sisler was born July 11, 1916, in Wardensville, W.Va., the daughter of John Samuel and Lucy Dellinger Kaufman. She retired in 1985 as a nurse’s aide at Welcome Haven Home for Adults after 15 years.

She was a member of Faith Mission Church, Wardensville.

She married Boyd L. Sisler on Dec. 25, 1937, in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Surviving with her husband, are two sons, David L. Sisler of Middletown and Kenneth L. Sisler of Winchester; two daughters, Loretta S. Swartz and Judy A. Kanotus, both of Winchester; a brother, Lawrence Kaufman of Wardensville; three sisters, Peggy Kerr and Betty Merriman, both of Wardensville, and Lola Funkhouser of Baker, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Faith Mission Church, Wardensville, with Pastor David Garns and the Rev. Eric Farel officiating. Burial will be in Wardensville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Brill, Lawrence Jordan, Wayne Sievers, Allen Sine, Pat Grim, Leonard Fahnestock.

Dudy Marie Lockhart, 54, of 412 Butts Park, Martinsburg, W.Va., died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Mrs. Lockhart was born Jan. 9, 1946, in McCoole, Md., the daughter of Olen B. and Nancy Peacemaker Shumaker.

Surviving are three sons, C. Kelly Lockhart of Winchester, Brancen D. “Bucky” Lockhart of Inwood, W.Va., and Andrew S. Harler of Martinsburg; a daughter, Sue Lynn Peffer of Winchester; a brother, Stephen Shumaker of Winchester; a sister, Linda Shumaker of Winchester; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with the Rev. Patrick Kerr officiating. Burial will be in Quaker Cemetery, Capon Bridge, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be Joey Lightcap, Keith Hubbard, Steve Hubbard, Tim Weaver, Tim Barnes, and George Lebon.

George Lee Sheetz
George Lee Sheetz, 84, of 691 National Ave., Winchester, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Sheetz was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Woodstock, the son of Oscar Lee and Maude Golladay Sheetz. He was an electrical contractor and had retired as manager of the Workingman’s Store.

He was a graduate of Massanutten Military Academy and the Cincinnati College of Embalming.

He served in the Maritime Service as a pharmacist mate.

He was a member of Hopewell Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, where he was clerk of the Building and Grounds Committee. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League, the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society, and the Shenandoah Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia.

He was a member of the founding committee for Camp Rock Enon and scoutmaster of Troop 20 for 14 years.

He married Martha Walker Lupton on May 1, 1939, in Winchester.

Surviving with his wife, are a daughter, Marjorie S. Lewis of Winchester; a son, Thomas Lupton Sheetz of Austin, Texas; a sister, Rosalie Jennings of Edinburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hopewell Friends Meeting, Clearbrook.
