Mittie I. Wratchford
Mittie Ileta Wratchford, 73, of Huntcrest Circle, Winchester, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Baltimore.

Mrs. Wratchford was born June 18, 1926, in Greenbrier County, W.Va., the daughter of Charles A. and Pearl Humes Pennington. She worked for Drug Fair as a fountain manager and pharmacy clerk and retired in 1987.

She married James A. Wratchford on June 7, 1946, in Cumberland, Md. Mr. Wratchford died March 12, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Steven E. Wratchford of Chesterfield, Mich., and Maynard L. Wratchford of Odenton, Md.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Harry Michener, David Housley, Derek Wratchford, Paul Hoffman, and Millard Wratchford.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Brent H. Parker
Brent Henry Parker, 41, of Paw Paw, W.Va., died Sunday at Augusta Correctional Center, Craigsville.

Mr. Parker was born Aug. 3, 1958, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., the son of Bonnie Kesecker Parker and William Foster Parker.

He was a carpenter.

Surviving with his mother of Paw Paw are a daughter, Heather Brown of Paw Paw, and a granddaughter.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sulphur Springs Cemetery near Paw Paw, with Pastor Earl Travis officiating.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Fraley-Kimble Funeral Home, Paw Paw.

Etta V. Swearer
Etta Virginia Swearer, 90, of Vanderbilt, Pa., formerly of Purgitsville, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at the Blue Ridge Hospice Home near Berryville.

Mrs. Swearer was born Jan. 12, 1910, in Purgitsville, the daughter of Homer and Mabel Fleming Mellon. She worked for Sears & Roebuck Co. in Cleveland.

She married John R. Swearer on July 12, 1961, in Cleveland.

Surviving with her husband, are a daughter, Mabel Corbin of Gore; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, W.Va., with Pastor Glen Hamric officiating. Burial will be in Old Pine Cemetery, Purgitsville.

Pallbearers will be Carl Corbin II, Corey Corbin, Dallas Rinker, Charles Rinker, Buddy Kemper, and Kevin Synovec.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Nancy W. Lee
Nancy W. Lee, 67, of Front Royal, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Lee was born Oct. 4, 1932, in Broad Run, the daughter of Clarence E. and Betty Taylor Wiser. She retired as a manager with C&P Telephone Co., where she was one of the first women managers. She was the first woman chairman of the Winchester Chamber of Commerce. She was past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Marshall Chapter 101, and a member of Front Royal Presbyterian Church.

She was married to Joseph Dill Lee.

Surviving with her husband, are two brothers, George Wiser and Raymond Wiser, both of Broad Run; and two sisters, Bessie Lunsford of Buckland and Bertha Mae Nelson of Warrenton.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Front Royal Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Thomas Rhyne officiating.

Friends may call anytime at the Lee home.

Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Front Royal Presbyterian Church, 115 Luray Ave., Front Royal 22630.

Elsie V. Catlett
Elsie Virginia Catlett, 85, of 100 Massanutten Manor, Strasburg, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Woodstock.

Miss Catlett was born Dec. 17, 1915, in Whitehall, the daughter of Jacob A. and Bessie Luttrell Catlett. She was a member of Whitehall United Methodist Church.

Surviving is a brother, Harry Catlett of Strasburg.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Debbie Powell officiating.

Pallbearers will be Harry LaFollette Jr., Harry LaFollette Sr., Charlie LaFollette, Raymond Terrell, and Keith White.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Omps Funeral Home.

Anna Marie Smith
Anna Marie Smith, 92, of 652 North Buckton Road, Middletown, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Mrs. Smith was born April 3, 1907, in Northampton, Pa., the daughter of John and Mary Milkovits Weaver. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Kreidersville, Pa.

She married Theodore William Smith on Oct. 2, 1926, in Northampton. Mr. Smith died July 2, 1989.

Surviving are two sons, Theodore J. Smith of Middletown and Thomas H. Smith of Coopersburg, Pa.; a daughter, Joanne R. Simon of Southampton; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Schisler Funeral Home, Northampton, with the Rev. Ivan Koberlein officiating. Burial will be in Allen Union Cemetery, Northampton.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Stephens City, and from noon until the time of the service at Schisler Funeral Home.

Patrick H. Whittington
Patrick Henry Whittington, 74, of Stephenson, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Whittington was born March 17, 1925, in Clarke County, the son of George Washington and Martha E. Mose Whittington. He retired from Burch’s Manufacturing Co. of Summit Point, W.Va.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He married Geraldine L. Everhart on June 24, 1967, in Frederick County.

Surviving with his wife, are two sons, Vernon R. Whittington of Stephenson and Kenneth D. Whittington of Winchester; two daughters, Patricia H. Coulahan of Willis and Sylvia K. Whittington of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; a stepson, Kenneth F. Fraley of Frederick County; a stepdaughter, Marlene Borman of Falling Waters, W.Va.; two sisters, Gladys LaFollette of Clarke County and Catherine Marie Owens of Charles Town, W.Va.; a brother, Charles E. Whittington of Harrisonburg; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Michael R. Phelps & Associates Funeral Directors, Stephens City, with the Rev. Anthony A. Wadsworth officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Robert LaFollette, Robbie LaFollette, Greg Scott, Todd Suling, Larry Signor, and David Bragg.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Anna Marie Smith
Anna Marie Smith, 92, of 625 North Buckton Road, Middletown, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Frances J. Underwood
Frances J. Underwood, 71, of 225 Chalmers Court, 3B, Berryville, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Underwood was born April 9, 1928, in Clarke County, the daughter of Bertrand and Minnie Wilson Smith. She was a member of Prosperity Baptist Church in Jamestown, W.Va., where she was a member of the Flower Club and Culinary Committee.

She was married to Ralph Underwood.

Surviving are five sons, Francis “Snookie” Underwood of New London, Conn., and Ralph Underwood, Michael Underwood, William “Curtis” Underwood, and Keith Underwood, all of Berryville; four daughters, Joan S. Henfield, Ruth Underwood, Virginia Underwood, and Kim Underwood, all of Berryville; four sisters, Virginia Williams and Elizabeth Robinson, both of Berryville, Ruth Hubbard of Boyce, and Theresa Potter of New London; two brothers, Stanley Smith of Berryville and Charles Smith of Boyce; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, Berryville, with the Rev. John Green officiating. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery, Franklintown, W.Va.

Pallbearers will be Reginald Smith, Timothy Smith, Douglas Hart, William Weaver, Robert Johnson, and James Lockley.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Cartwright Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Darlene W. Smith
Darlene Wilkins Smith, 56, of P.O. Box 115, Wardensville, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at her home.

Mrs. Smith was born March 25, 1943, in Hardy County, W.Va., the daughter of Nathan and Delia Miller Wilkins. She was a teller at Capon Valley Bank in Wardensville. She was a 1961 graduate of Mathias High School and graduated from Potomac State College in 1963 with an associate’s degree as a medical secretary.

She was a member of New Dale Church of the Brethren in Baker, W.Va.

She married Alvin E. Smith on May 24, 1970, in Baker.

Surviving with her husband, is her mother, of Slanesville.

A funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Wardensville United Methodist Church, with Pastor David Garns officiating. Burial will be in Greenfield Cemetery, Wardensville.

Pallbearers will be Leslie Barr, Alan Brill, Alfred Ludwig, James Dyer, Gerald Fishel, and Ed Music.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville.

Daisy D. Thorne
Daisy Dell Huffman “Shorty” Thorne, 84, of 132 Church Hill Lane, Fishers Hill, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the home of her son in Winchester.

Mrs. Thorne was born Aug. 30, 1915, in Craig County, the daughter of Tony and Cora Dell Huffman. She attended Emmanuel Evangelical & Reform Church of Fishers Hill. She was a charter member of the Strasburg Women of the Moose 1319 and a member of the College of Regents of the Moose Lodge.

She was married to P.W. Thorne.

Surviving are two sons, Charles Rogers Thorne of Winchester and Gary Kirkland Thorne of Kensington, Md.; and two grandsons.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, with the Rev. Dan Locke officiating. Burial will be in Fishers Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ray Ritenour Jr., William Baker, Edgar Hamrick Jr., Donald Vance, Roland Bagnell, and Warren Hamrick.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Evangelical & Reform Church of Fishers Hill or to the American Cancer Society.

Rev. William E. Eisenberg
The Rev. William E. Eisenberg, 97, formerly of Winchester, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in the National Lutheran Home, Rockville, Md.

The Rev. Eisenberg, who was born Jan. 3, 1903, in Staunton, was the former pastor of Grace Lutheran Church.

His wife, Dorothy D. Eisenberg, is deceased.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy E. Libby of East Brunswick, N.J., and Mary Martha Robertson of Miami; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Utt officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester.

Memorials may be made to Heritage for the Future Fund at Grace Lutheran Church, 26 W. Boscawen St., Winchester 22601.

Col. Elwin F. Holmes
Col. Elwin Franklin “Sherlock” Holmes, Air Force, Ret., 80, of Cross Junction, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Walter Reed Army Hospital.

Col. Holmes was born April 27, 1919, in Dunn, N.C., the son of Joseph and Florence Holmes.

His military career began in 1941 and included operational flights over the Assam-China air routes and the Berlin Airlift. He was a member of staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and retired in 1971. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the Legion of Merit.

He was a graduate of Dunn High School and attended Duke University. He was a fullback for the Blue Devils and a member of the 1939 Duke Rose Bowl Team.

Surviving are four daughters, Carol Dabrowski of Ashburn, Susan McPheters of New Port Ritchey, Fla., Sherry Brody of Sterling, and Beverly Turner of Alexandria; his former wife, Frances Sue Poe Holmes of Winchester; a sister, Edna Gray Strickland of Dunn; two brothers, Thomas E. Holmes of Charlotte, N.C., and Lt. Col. Oliver W. Holmes, Air Force, Ret., of Dunn; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service is planned.
