Ruth Pownall, 74, of Wardensville, W.Va., died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at her home.

Arrangements with Loy-Giffin Funeral Home, Wardensville, are incomplete.

Mary A. Cook
Mary Argel Cook, 77, of Hidden River, Kearneysville, W.Va., died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mrs. Cook was born Oct. 20, 1923, in Tennessee, the daughter of Michael and Cordelia Davis. She was a homemaker.

She was a member and former deacon of Leetown Baptist Church, Leetown, W.Va., and the Women’s Missionary Union.

She was married to Desmond Cook, who died March 18, 1981.

Surviving are a son, Bobby Desmond Cook of Kearneysville; three sisters, Lucille Adams of Fayetteville, Pa., Mae Fisher of Columbia, Pa., and Clara Gibson of Scranton, Pa.; a brother, Arthur Davis of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and a granddaughter.

A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, W.Va., with the Rev. R. Dennis Campbell officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Meadow Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery, Elkridge, Md.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Charles T. Oliver
Charles Tinsley Oliver, 63, of Front Royal, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2000, in Warren County.

Arrangements with Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, are incomplete.

Elonzy Smith
Elonzy Smith, 78, of 1186 Millwood Pike, Winchester, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in a local nursing home.

Sally J. Stephenson
Sally Joan Larrison Stephenson, 70, of 238 Greenbriar Circle, Cross Junction, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mary W. Markle
Mary Windle Markle, 55, of 2796 Green Spring Road, Winchester, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Markle was born Oct. 2, 1945, in Woodstock, the daughter of George M. and Dorothy Maryland Windle. She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church, the Pine Knots Seniors, and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Virginia State Horticulture Society.

She was a 1964 graduate of James Wood High School.

She married James Richard Markle on Oct. 24, 1964, in Winchester.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Kimberly Markle Carrington of Winchester; a brother, Jerry L. Windle of Winchester; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Powell and the Rev. Margaret Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Strasburg.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Ballenger, Robert Belford, Robbie W. Robinson, Donald Bowers, Craig Rogers, Eric Rogers, James Boyd, and Kenneth L. Cameron.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Margaret M. Tigney
Margaret M. Tigney, 62, of Front Royal, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Judith F. Funk
Judith Fadely Funk, 62, of Front Royal, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Heritage Hall Health Care Center, Front Royal.

Mrs. Funk was born July 27, 1938, in Shenandoah County, the daughter of John R. and Joyce Williams Fadely.

Surviving are two daughters, Julie Darr Scammahorn of San Francisco and Susie Bourbon of Savannah, Ga.; a son, Michael Darr of Front Royal; four stepsons, Dennis Funk and Donald Funk, both of Middletown, Lynn Funk of Front Royal, and Ronald Funk of Baltimore; two brothers, Daniel Fadely of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Robin Fadely of Winchester; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 14 step grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren.

A son, Richard Gary Darr Jr., and a stepdaughter, Linda F. Nichols, are deceased.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home, Front Royal, with the Rev. L.J. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Panorama Memorial Gardens, Waterlick.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Funk Jr., Robert J. Henry Sr., Gary Lansberry, Steven Perry, Irvin Pingley, and Ray Rowe.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Kathleen J. Tabb
Kathleen Jayne Martin Tabb, 77, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in Outlook Pointe of Martinsburg.

Mrs. Tabb was born March 1, 1923, in Hampshire County, W.Va., the daughter of Rumsey and Lillie Haines Martin. She attended Hoy Grade School and a graduated from Capon Bridge High School in 1941.

She was a member of Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church, Bunker Hill, W.Va.

She married Paul C. Tabb on Sept. 16, 1942. Mr. Tabb died in 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Phillip Tabb of Bunker Hill and Jerry Tabb of Nipetown, W.Va.; two sisters, Onile Secindiver and Eulala Grapes of Romney, W.Va.; and five grandchildren.

A private service is planned.

Memorials may be made to Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church, Rt. 2, Box 325, Bunker Hill, W.Va. 25413; or to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Frank Floyd
Frank Floyd, 86, of 746 McIlwee Lane, Star Tannery, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at the home of John and Phyllis Orndorff, with whom he lived.

Mr. Floyd was born May 19, 1914, in South Carolina, the son of Frank and Viola May Cribb Floyd Sr. He retired as a policeman in Washington, D.C., after 29 years.

He was a member of the Retired Policeman’s Association and the National Rifle Association. He was a member and trustee of the First Baptist Church of Hyattsville, Md., and a founding member and organizer of Poplar Hollow Gun Club of Star Tannery.

Surviving are his wife, Eunice Floyd of Hyattsville; two sons, Erol Floyd of Phoenix and Frank Douglas Floyd of Hyattsville; two daughters, Sandra Brooks of Bealeton and Louise Ritchie of Hyattsville; a sister, Irene True of Frederick, Md.; a brother, J.B. Floyd of Chesapeake Beach; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Strasburg Seventh-day Adventist Church, with the Rev. Carroll Brauer officiating.

Memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Winchester 22601.

Judith Fadely Funk, 62, of Front Royal, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at Heritage Hall Health Center, Front Royal.

Minnie F. Hartley
Minnie Frances Hartley, 78, of Wilson Boulevard, Winchester, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Hartley was born May 13, 1922, in Madison County, the daughter of Granville and Alice Smith Donald. She retired Aug. 30, 1981, from Capitol Records.

She was a member of Montague Avenue United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, Dallas Hartley Jr. of Clearbrook; a daughter, Barbara Short of Charleston, W.Va.; two sisters, Edna Randall and Grace Albright, both of Winchester; three brothers, Roy “Bill” Donald, Jesse Donald, and Granville Donald, all of Winchester; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, with the Rev. Herbert K. Seemann officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Junior Russell, James Dorsey, Marc Arnold, Carl Stotler, Parrish Trant, and Donald Brill.

Friends may call this afternoon and Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Thelma V. Lowry
Thelma Virginia Lowry, 82, of Front Royal, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at Susan B. Miller Nursing Home, Woodstock.

Mrs. Lowry was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Hancock, Md., the daughter of Vernon P. and Roberta Hill Mann. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Front Royal.

She was married to Roy W. Lowry. Her first husband was Paul Frederick Lesher.

Surviving are two daughters, Elaine L. Neff of Strasburg and Karen L. Bailey of Arlington; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Clear Spring, Md., with the Rev. Dr. R. Mark Jordon officiating.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 14 W. First St., Front Royal 22630; or the Woodstock Rescue Squad.

Frances S. Hitchings
Frances S. Hitchings, 96, of Evergreen Health and Rehab Center, Winchester, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at the center.

Mrs. Hitchings was born Jan. 2, 1904, in New Castle, Pa., the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Dixon Smith. She was a retired teacher and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Clairton, Pa. She was a graduate of Slippery Rock University.

She was married to Harry Hitchings.

Surviving are a daughter, Jean A. Hughes of Seminole, Fla.; two sons, Samuel Hitchings of Strasburg and Gordon Hitchings of Edinboro, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Clairton. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hill, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at A.J. Beckavac Funeral Home, Clairton.

Local arrangements are being handled by Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg.

Sloan O. Miller
Sloan Offutt Miller, 74, of North River Mills, W.Va., died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md., as a result of a tractor accident.

Mr. Miller was born Nov. 5, 1926, in North River Mills, the son of Charles Love and Wilma McDonald Miller. He worked for 40 years as a telecommunication engineer for the U.S. Government in Arlington. He was a Navy veteran.

He was a member of North River Mills United Methodist Church and Herndon Masonic Lodge.

He married Peggy Chapman on Nov. 23, 1951, in Hagerstown, Md.

Surviving with his wife are three sons, C. Craig Miller of Round Hill, Bradford L. Miller of Colonial Beach, and Kent E. Miller of Hamilton; a sister, Lake Henderson of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge, with the Rev. Patrick Kerr officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Salem Cemetery, Points, W.Va.

The family will receive friends one-half hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home.

Dianne L. Plaisted
Dianne Lynn Cox Plaisted, 44, of Floyd, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000.

Mrs. Plaisted was born in Winchester, the daughter of Chester and Dorothy Oates Cox.

She married Carleton Plaisted on Feb. 25, 1984, in Maine.

She was a 1974 graduate of James Wood High School and a 1978 graduate of Radford College School of Nursing.

She graduated with honors in 1990 from Radford University with a master’s degree in nursing. She was near completion of the post-master’s family nurse practitioner program.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Sarah Beth Plaisted, at home; a son, Ryan Plaisted, at home; her stepfather, Kenneth Dodson of Winchester; a brother, Dale Dodson of Winchester; and two sisters, Denise Swartz of Yellow Spring, W.Va., and Donna Sipe of Berryville.

A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Horne Funeral Service in Christiansburg.
