Gladys Gordon

SOUTH HILL, Va. - Gladys Thomas Gordon, 85, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Samuel S. Thomas and Bernice Crowder Thomas. She was married to Haywood Elam Gordon Sr., who predeceased her.

She was retired from La Cross Sportswear and was a member for more than 60 years of Union Level Baptist Church, serving as secretary and treasurer for more than 35 years. She also served in the WMU of the church.

Survivors include one son, Elam Gordon of South Hill; two sisters, Edna T. Hamlin of South Hill and Hazel Snead of Kenbridge; one brother, Snead Thomas of Danville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Farrar Funeral Chapel with the Rev. William Blalock and Dr. Buddy Miller officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ruby Graves

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruby Willie Graves, 95, of 450 Piney Forest Road, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Piney Forest Nursing Home.

Born April 30, 1903, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Bill Saunders and Lydia Osborne Saunders.

She was married to Charlie Wilbert Graves, who predeceased her.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann Barber of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Kate Adams of Ringgold; and two sons, Percy Graves of Detroit, Mich., and Deacon Rodgers Plunkett of Washington, D.C.

She was the last surviving member of her generation.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ by Bishop Peggy Motley. Burial will be in the Saunders family cemetery in Ringgold. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Kate Adams, 5231 Tom Fork Road, Ringgold.

Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Pearl Osborne

CHATHAM, Va. - Helen Pearl Osborne, 96, of 2135 Cooksburg Road, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999, at her residence.

Born June 15, 1902, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of John Thomas Barbour and Mary Hardy Barbour. She was married to Frank James Osborne and was the oldest member of Greenbay Christian Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Bertha Osborne of Martinsville, Claire I. Osborne and "Trudie" Owen, both of Chatham; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at Greenbay Christian Church with the Rev. Rudy Hearn, the Rev. J.D. Hunt III and the Rev. Darrell Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alise Rowland

RINGGOLD, Va. - Alise Shelton Rowland, 73, 1149 Fall Creek Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for several years.

Born June 15, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of E.B. Shelton and Ola Owen Shelton.

She had lived all of her life in Pittsylvania County and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. On Sept. 30, 1942, she was married to Millard Curtis Rowland.

In addition to her mother of Danville and her husband of the residence, survivors include two daughters, Cynthia R. Rozewicz of Danville, and Ellen R. Whitt of Knightdale, N.C.; one son, Richard W. Rowland of Callands; one brother, Barnard B. Shelton of Danville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Douglas Carroll Rowland Sr.A private graveside service will be held Thursday in Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Howard Green officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. today at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel.

Jeff Walker

DANVILLE, Va. - Carroll Eston "Jeff" Walker Sr., 80, of 1559 Kentuck Road, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Danville Regional Medical Center after declining in health since 1995. He had been hospitalized for six days.

Born Oct. 1, 1918, in Franklin County, he was the son of William Henry Walker and Lucy Maude Adams Walker.

He was married March 25, 1950, to Jerrine Brown Walker, who survives.

Mr. Walker had lived in Danville and Pittsylvania County his entire life. Prior to his retirement, he was an auto body technician. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, a trustee and former lay leader and Sunday school superintendent. A member of the Hall of Fame and a life member of the Danville Bowling Association, he was a member of the Danville chapter, American Legion Post No. 325.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include three sons, Carroll E. Walker Jr. and his wife, Martha A. Walker, of Ringgold, Michael A. Walker and his wife, Charlotte P. Walker of Dallas, Texas, and Jerry E. Walker of Danville; four sisters, Evelyn Hall and Mildred Thomas, both of Danville, Ada Pleasant of Purley, N.C., and Mabel Paschal of Ruffin N.C.; three granddaughters, Jennifer Walker of Ringgold, and Whitney Walker and Adrienne Walker, both of Dallas, Texas; and two grandsons, Matthew Walker of Ringgold and Brent Walker of Dallas, Texas.

He was predeceased by one sister, Ellen Brumfield; and three brothers, Willie Walker, Turner Walker and James Walker. A funeral will be held 2 p.m. today at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard Green officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park with military honors by American Legion Post No. 325.

The family will receive friends at the residence. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Joe Wilson

DANVILLE, Va. - Joseph "Joe" Paul Wilson Jr., 54, of 127 Berman Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at his residence after a decline in health for the past year.

Born July 23, 1944, in Danville, he was the son of the late Joseph Paul Wilson Sr. and Bertha Coffey Wilson.

He had lived in Rochester, N.Y., prior to moving back to Danville to live for the past 12 years. He had worked as house manager for the Danville Post No. 1097, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, until his health began to fail. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard.

In addition to his mother of Danville, survivors include his life partner, Denise Mallon of the residence; one daughter, Kimberly Wilson of Rushville, N.Y.; and two sisters, Ann W. Jones of Gainsville, Ga., and Joyce W. Ingold of Monroe, N.C.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. John C. Gentry officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Leffie Brumfield

BURKEVILLE, Va. - Leffie Ray Brumfield, 77, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital.

Born Oct. 18, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of George W. Brumfield and Sallie Bowling Brumfield.

He was a retired employee of Burlington. He was of the Holiness faith.

Survivors include four sons, Henry Ray Brumfield of Ringgold, Moncie Lee Brumfield of Gretna, James Edward Brumfield and Leffie Dean Brumfield, both of Sutherlin; one daughter, Clara S. Smith of Hurt; four brothers Lloyd Brumfield, Lonnie Brumfield and Jim Brumfield all of Gretna and Guy Brumfield of Rustburg; one sister Sally Purdy of Gretna; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was predecesed by two sons Wilford Brumfield, J.C. Brumfield, and a daughter Kathy Pearl Brumfield.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Colbert-Moran Chapel with the Rev. David W. Rowland officiating. Burial will be in Brumfield Family cemetery, Brights.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Colbert Moran Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his daughter, 6149 Dews Road, Hurt.

Douglas Clark

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Douglas Rea Clark, 53, of 3323 Old Halifax Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at his home.

Born Feb. 2, 1945, in Martinsville, he was the son of Elmer Tune Clark and Frances Rea Clark.

He was pastor of Seven Oaks Baptist Church for many years and was the owner of Doug's Antiques and Reproduction Furniture.

Survivors include three daughters Wendy Michelle Clark and Karen Renee Clark, both of South Boston, and Amy Elizabeth Auld of Virgilina; one son Kenneth Rea Clark of South Boston; and one grandchild.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Centerville Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Saunders and the Rev. Rudolph Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. today at Powell Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

Estelle Currin

EASTHAM, Mass. - Estelle Tucker Currin died on Dec. 31, 1998, at Brewster Manor, Brewster, on Cape Code, Mass. at the age of 86.

She was born on May 23, 1912, in News Ferry, Va., the daughter of Fannie May Whitlow and Edgar Thomas Tucker.

She was married in 1935, to Walter Alexander Currin, who died in May 1959.

Returning to Danville in 1988, she resided at the Danville House until 1996, when due to failing health she moved to Massachusetts to live with her daughter. In Danville, she was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and actively involved with the church's programs. She was also well known for planning social activities at Danville House.

Survivors include her brother, W.E. Tucker of Danville, Va.; her daughter Gwen Pelletier of Eastham, Mass.; a son, D. Banks Currin of Arlington, Va. She had two other sons, Walter A. Currin, Jr. who died in September 1998, at the age of 62, and Henry Whitlow Currin, who died in September 1992, at the age of 48. In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews in the Danville and Rocky Mount areas.

She worked in retail in Rocky Mount, N.C. Later she worked as motel and apartment building managers in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Her position just prior to retirement was a resident manager of the Circle Apartment Building on North Adams Street in Arlington, Va. from 1967-1980. She loved traveling and was able to see much of the United States and Canada on visits to and with her children and friends. One of her grandchildren fondly referred to her as his "gypsy" grandmother.

The family will receive friends after 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17, at the home of her brother, 2837 Dodson Drive, Danville. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Jan. 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, Danville. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Dana Hunt and the Rev. George Neas. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. the same day at Red Oak cemetery, Highway 43, Red Oak, N.C. where she will be buried beside her husband. The family will receive friends following the burial service at the home of Steven and Deborah Shearin, 2334 N. Old Carriage Road, Rocky Mount, Va.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Lower Cape Cod Community Development Corporation, P.O. Box 1860, N. Eastham, Mass. 02651 or Main Street United Methodist Church, 767 Main Street, Danville, Va. 24541. Thomas Green

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Thomas L. Green, of 601 L. St., S.E., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at his residence.

Born in Danville, he was the son of Alexander Green and Catherine Green.

Survivors include two sisters, Catherine E. Mayo and Mariah Link, both of Danville; and one brother William F. Green.

A memorial service will be held Thursday in Washington, D.C.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Gladys Hylton

DANVILLE, VA. - Gladys Hylton, of 332 Horseshoe Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at her residence.

Born March 21, 1930, in Danville, she was the daughter of John Will Lipford and Mary Dove Lipford.

She was married July 23, 1949, to Ernest T. Hylton Jr. who predeceased her on Feb. 19, 1991.

She had lived all her life in the Danville area and was formerly employed with Dan River Inc. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Ernest T. Hylton III of the residence; one daughter, Susan H. Hutson of Dry Fork; one sister, Catherine L. Clements of Arlington; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Greenhill cemetery. Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
