Ruth Womack

DANVILLE, Va. - Ruth Womack, 61, of 6531 Old Richmond Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 1, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Marie Glass Womack and John Womack, who survives.

She was employed in the Food Service Department at Danville Regional Medical Center and was a member of the Riceville Baptist Church.

In addition to her father, of the residence, she is survived by two sisters, Joan Womack of Washington, D.C. and Emily Womack of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, Edward Womack of Danville, Michael Womack of Panama City, Fla. and Thomas Womack of Cascade.

The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Riceville Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Walker officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

A viewing will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday.

Bishop Ruby G. Woodson

DANVILLE, Va. - Bishop Ruby G. Woodson of 123 Heritage Towers, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at the Beverly Health Care Center in Martinsville.

She was born in Pittsylvania County.

She was the founder, pastor and Bishop of St. James Holiness Church in Greensboro, N.C. and Mt. Zion Holiness on Betts Street, Danville.

She was married to Walter T. Woodson, who predeceased her.

She is survived by one son, James Woodson; one sister, Carrie Bethel and one brother, George Stanfield, all of Danville.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the James Street Holiness Church, Danville. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. at the Saint James HOFS Church, 4795 North Church St., Greensboro. At other times they will be at the home of her son, 419 West Thomas St.

Dorothy Hodnett

RINGGOLD, Va. - Dorothy Bane Hodnett, 87, of 505 Hillside Drive, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at the residence.

Born June 3, 1914 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of J.W. Bane and Berta Moorefield Bane.

She was married March 29, 1937, to Edward Morrison Hodnett, who survives. She was a member of Kentuck Baptist Church and lived in the Glenwood community of Pittsylvania County. She had been a resident of Kentuck since 1978. She had worked for Dan River Mills Inc. as an inspector prior to becoming a homemaker.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two daughters, Nancy H. Eanes of Dunwoody, Ga. and Lena H. Kent of Ringgold; two sons, Samuel M. Hodnett and Jack B. Hodnett, both of Ringgold; three brothers, J.W. Bane and Lacy Bane, both of Vernon Hill, and Woody Bane of Halifax; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two brothers, Kermit Bane and James Edward Bane, and one sister, Lillian Bane.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Kentuck Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. A.C. Smith and Carl Burger officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Kentuck Baptist Church and at other times at the residence.

Leonard Howard

THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Leonard L. Howard, 78, of 310 Fritts Drive, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at the residence.

Born March 2, 1924, he was a son of George Edward Howard and Alma Cassada Howard.

He was first married to Mary Ethel Daniel Howard Sakellaris, who survives, then to Gloria Maree Taylor McKinney Nostrandt Howard, who predeceased him, and then most recently to Ruth Elaine Pierce Summit Howard, who also predeceased him. He was an iron worker and boilermaker for Babcock and Wilcox and a veteran of World War II, during which he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of VFW Post #647 and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers.

Survivors, in addition to his first wife, include three daughters, Elizabeth "Becky" N. Pippin of Danville, Va., and Susan N. Jones and Terri N. Lingle, both of Thomasville; two sons, Joseph Thomas McKinney of Gretna, Va. and Richard "Ricky" E. Nostrandt of Ringgold, Va.; one brother, Gerald Howard of Danville, Va.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased, in addition to his parents and second and third wives, by one daughter, Mary Lea Howard Mahaley Myers; two brothers, George Edward Howard Jr. and Kenneth Clinton Howard; and one sister, Helen Gloria Howard.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Johnny Ray Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors by American Legion Dan River Post #1097.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Swicegood Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Becky Pippin, 681 Laniers Mill Road, Danville.

Donations may be made to the Danville Cancer Association, 1225 W. Main St., Danville, Va. 24541.

Virginia Kernodle

DANVILLE, Va. - Virginia W. Kernodle, 89, of 123 Winslow St., died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 6, 1912 in Danville, she was the daughter of Charlie and Sue Williams.

She was married to James H. Kernodle, who predeceased her.

Survivors include four daughters, Ruth K. Anderson, Jennie B. McClary, Rosa Lee Hairston, and Annie Mae Kernodle, all of Danville; and two sons, William H. Kernodle, and Robert Kernodle, both of Danville.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. William Dixon officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Tony King

DANVILLE, Va. - Tony Allen King, 47, of 306 Guilford St., died Sunday morning, March 24, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born May 5, 1954, in Danville, he was the son of Elsie Cockran Campbell, who survives and Emmitt King.

He was married July 30, 1977, to Cynthia Tate King, who survives. He was a self-employed industrial painter and owned and operated the Briar Mountain Ostrich Ranch. He was raised and loved by his stepfather, Eugene Franklin Campbell.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Gretna and mother of Danville, include one son, Joshua Caleb King of Chatham; one daughter, Courtney King Foster of Gretna; one brother, Gary Steven Campbell of Dry Fork; three sisters, Donna Fay Campbell of Dry Fork, Gina Marie Harris of Danville and Sherry Crabb of Atlanta, Ga.; and one half-brother, Emmitt King III of Winston-Salem, N.C.

He was predeceased, in addition to his father and stepfather, by one one brother, Donald Ray King.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barker Funeral Home with speaker Wayne Roach officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Barker Funeral Home Chapel and other times will be at the residence.

Mary Matkins

DANVILLE, Va. - Mary Glass Reagan Matkins, 95, of 504 Parkland Drive, Danville, VA, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born November 22, 1906, in Danville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Hattie Lee Reagan, deceased.

She was first married to James Richard Barker, who died in 1938, and later married Willie F. Matkins, who died in 1963. Mrs. Matkins was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church where she served as Sunday School Superintendent Primary Department for 40 years. She was a member of the choir and Willing Workers Bible Class. She was also a member of Pocahontas Tribe Member Circle #1 and a former member of the Eastern Star. She had been employed at Dan River Mills.

Survivors include one son, Wallace E. Barker of Danville, VA; one step-daughter, Ruth Gibson of Yanceyville, NC; 3 grandchildren, Jeanette Blanks of Danville, VA, Richard Barker of Danville, VA, and Brenda Wood of Dry Fork, VA; 2 god-children, John Walker of Danville, VA, and Wendy Walker of Danville, VA; 5 great-grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Third Avenue Christian Church by the Rev. Freddie Vicks. Burial will follow at Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 25, 2002 from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at Third Avenue Christian Church and at other times the family will be at the residence.

Jessica McCain

KEELING, Va. - Jessica Carol McCain, 21, of 8841 Old Richmond Road, died Friday, March 22, 2002 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born Sept. 27, 1980 in Danville, she was a daughter of W. Phillip McCain and Janice Gosney McCain, who survive.

She was a member of Kentuck Presbyterian Church, where she served in the choir. She was also a 1998 graduate of George Washington High School. She was a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where she attended the VCU School of Music, attained dean's list status and was a National Dean's List Scholar in 2000 and 2001. She was a member of the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra, the Virginia Commonwealth University Orchestra and the Strings Ensemble. She was also a member of the Danville Symphony Orchestra.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one sister, Agatha Gaile McCain of the residence; one brother, Joseph Phillip McCain of the residence; and one grandmother, Geraldine C. Gosney of Keeling.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Townes Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Jeffrey L. Wright and Dr. O. Neil McCarter officiating. Interment will follow at the Gosney family cemetery in Keeling.

The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Danville Area Humane Society, P.O. Box 3352, Danville, Va. 24543.

Joshua Jordan Ott Thackston

CHATHAM, Va. - Saturday, March 23, 2002, God sent His angel to call one of His children home. We thank God for Joshua, the sweet, caring son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend to all that knew him.

Joshua was born July 21, 1985 in Pittsylvania County. He was the son of Toni Thackston and John A. Thackston.

Joshua was known to many as "Ott." He was a junior at Chatham High School and was a member of the ROTC. He always had a smile and was friendly to everyone he met. Joshua will truly be missed

Those he leaves to cherish his memory are his mother, Toni Thackston; father, John A. Thackston, both of Chatham; one brother, John R. Thackston of the residence; grandmothers, Faye Motley of Chatham and Earlene Thackston of Bailey, NC; grandfathers, Ronnie "Dale" Motley of Chatham and James Thackston of Bailey, NC; three uncles, Brett Motley of Chatham, Jimmy Thackston and Allen Williams both of North Carolina; four aunts, Jennifer Motley and Patrice Motley, both of Chatham, Debbie Williams and Wendy Thackston, both of North Carolina; a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at 11:00 AM from the Scott Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Charles Wickham. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8 PM at Scott Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence, 1660 Hollywood Rd., Chatham. Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Janie Wagner

YANCEYVILLE, N.C. - Janie Everett Wagner, 68, of 131 Everett Road, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the residence after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 22, 1933 in Caswell County, she was the daughter of George C. and Lillian Burch Everett.

She was married to Clyde O. Wagner, who predeceased her Feb. 26, 2002. She retired from Dan River Mills after 33 years of service. She attended Caswell County Schools, was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher, a group leader, and member of the choir.

Survivors include three daughter, Janet Southern of Madison, Patricia Mitchell, and Judy Douglas, both of Yanceyville; one son, Clyde Keith Wagner of Yanceyville; three sisters, Roberta Catherine Coley, and Virginia Moore, both of Yanceyville, and Celia Alice Adkins of Danville; one brother, Clyde Everett of Yanceyville; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Beulah Baptist Church with Charles Briggs, the Rev. Jim Whitehead, and the Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday at Beulah Baptist Church and other times will be at the residence.

Thomas Walker

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Thomas Wendell Walker, 63, of 6041 Huell Matthews Highway, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the residence of his daughter.

Born July 17, 1938, in Halifax County, he was the son of Rosemond Whitt Walker, who survives, and William Thomas Walker.

He was married to Evelyn Lorene Jackson Walker, who predeceased him. He was an auto body mechanic and manager of Walker Auto Repair and Cole's Gun Shop.

He was a veteran of the U.S. National Guard and was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of Virginia Beach, include two daughters, Gail Dickerson Epps, and Wendy Walker Cole, both of South Boston; three brothers, Allen Walker, and Clifford Walker, both of South Boston, and William Walker of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren.

The funeral was held 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. H.V. Conner officiating. Interment will follow at Black Walnut Baptist Church cemetery.

The family received friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Wendy Cole, 4122 Virgie Cole Road in South Boston.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Halifax County Cancer Association, P.O. Box 875, South Boston, Va. 24592 or Halifax Regional Hospice, 2204 Wilborn Ave., South Boston, Va. 24592.

Catherine Walton Hall

DANVILLE, Va. - Catherine Walton Hall, 77, of 2880 Dodson Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002 at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after eight years of declining health.

Born Sept. 22, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Frank T. Walton and Sallie Slayton Walton.

She had lived her entire life in the Danville area and was a homemaker. She had previously worked for Dan River Mills in the No. 4 Gray Inspections at the Schoolfield division. She was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church. She was the last survivor of her generation.

She married Robey E. Hall on July 27, 1946.

In addition to her husband of the residence, she is survived by a daughter, Kathy Hall Hahn of Potters Spring, Ga.; an adopted son, Randy Walton Hall; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Walton; and a sister, Erma Hellman.

The graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. David Lefon officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and at other times at the residence.

Delmer Dewey Hamilton

RALEIGH, N.C. - Delmer Dewey Hamilton, 69, of Raleigh, died Friday, November 15, 2002. He was born January 4, 1933 to the late Samantha and Craig Hamilton in Pikeville, Ky.

Delmer always had a smile and a joke to share. He loved people, traveling and the wide open road. It's there that God called him home to be with HIS other angels.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from U.S. Steel after 30 years of service.

He had recently relocated to Raleigh to be closer to those he dearly loved, his daughter, Amy Hamilton-Weldon, granddaughter, Cynthia "Candy" Perry and his son-in-law, Mark Weldon. Delmer also leaves behind his cherished son, John Wayne Hamilton of Portage, Ind. and countless other beloved relatives in Kentucky, Indiana and Virginia.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Christian Church. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Paul's Christian Church, 3331 Blue Ridge Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609.
