TROY, Va. -- Gary Potter, 46 years of age, formerly of Big Rock, Va., passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. He was born Jan. 28, 1954, in Buchanan County, Va., and he was the son of the late Sidney (Kenny) Potter and Mrs. Etta Skeens Potter Street of Baptist Valley, Va. He was of the Holiness faith, a 1972 graduate of Grundy Senior High School and a 1976 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Va., where he earned his bachelor of science degree in mining engineering. He was employed by the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy as an environmental engineer consultant. He was an avid outdoorsman, a loving husband of 23 years to his wife, Sue McClanahan Potter, Troy, Va. Additional survivors include his stepfather, Paul Street, Baptist Valley, Va., one sister, Cynthia Kay Potter, Swords Creek, Va.; two brothers, Billy Darrell Potter and wife Sue of Willis Springs, Va., and Kenneth Potter of Grundy; his father and mother-in-law, Earl and Bessie McClanahan, Hurley, Va.; a stepsister, Mrs. Paula (Wayne) Compton, Compton Mountain, Va.; stepbrothers, Teddy Street and wife, Julie, Vansant, Va., Harrison Street, Richlands, Jeff Street, Vansant, and Keith Street and wife, Lisa, Abingdon, Va. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at 1 p.m. in The Word Evangelistic Outreach Church at Hurley with Rev. Darrell Davis, Rev. Jerry Wilson, and Elders Jimmy Kerr and E.C. Honaker officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Active pallbearers will be Dickey Joe Belcher, Allen Bishop, David Benner, Gary Barney, Charles Hale, Conrad Spangler, Mack Hagy and Dick Rapp. Honorary pallbearers will be management and staff of the Division of Mineral Mining of Charlottesville, Va., and Dr. Gordon Morris. There will be services at the church Monday evening at 7 p.m. The family of Gary Potter is being served by the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.

RICHLANDS, Va. -- Mrs. Sue Jewell Messick, 61, of 222 Philpot St., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in a Bristol, Tennessee hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Whitewood, Va., and was a daughter of the late Elbert C. and Agnes M. Brown Jewell Sr., both Buchanan County natives. She was a graduate and valedictorian of the Class of 1956 at Whitewood High School and received her business degree from Emory & Henry College at Emory, Va. She was a former employee of Richlands National Bank and Southwest Virginia Community College. She had made her home in the Richlands area the past 42 years and attended Richlands First Assembly of God Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Michelle Messick and one sister, Lenore Ann Jewell. Survivors are: one son, William F. "Billy" Messick Jr. of the home; one sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Clifton R. (Kay) Jewell McPeak of Richlands; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. Shelby Jewell and wife, JoAnn of Whitewood, Mr. Ronnie D. Jewell and wife, Charlotte of Pembroke, Va., and Mr. Ebby Jewell and wife, Teresa of Tazewell, Va.; two special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Jim (Pat) Ray, Mrs. John (Shirley) Fagan, Mr. Sam Messick and Mr. Glenn Messick. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Buddy Hearld officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Nephews and first cousins will serve as pallbearers. MAXIE, Va. -- Clyde Murphy Sr., 73 years of age, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born at Hatfield, W.Va., he was a son of the late Wess and Alice Adkins Murphy. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life, a member of Harman Holiness Church and was a retired coal miner. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Edith White Murphy, June 17, 1992. He is survived by three daughters, Brenda Rice and husband, David, Grundy, Va., Patsy Belcher and husband, Jerry, Maxie, Va., and Linda Elswick and husband, Brady, Lieele Mountain, S.C.; one son, Clyde Murphy Jr. and wife Brenda, Keen Mountain, Va.; and special friend, Opal Baker, Maxie. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Marie Rose. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Harman Holiness Church, Harman, Va., with Revs. Danny Hess, Rudolph Sesco and Darrell Davis officiating with burial to follow in the Cantrell Cemetery on Poplar Creek, Route 2, Grundy, Va. NILES, Ill. -- James I. Evans, 60, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in the Regency Nursing Center following an extended illness. Born at Roseann, Va., he was a son of the late Troy and Orpha Kitemiller Evans. Survivors include: one brother, Charles Evans, Benton, Ky. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va., with Rev. James Chapman and Rev. Junior Pack officiating with burial following in Mountain Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Active pallbearers will be friends. GRUNDY, Va. -- Diana Faye Wagner Matney, 49, of the Slate Creek area, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born at Paynesville, W.Va., she was a daughter of Mrs. Peggy Mullins Wagner, War, W.Va., and the late Carl Wagner. She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years, a graduate of Iaeger High School and a member of Tookland Pentecostal Church. She was a retired employee of Sears Roebuck and Company with 19 years of service. Mrs. Matney was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Lee Matney, Nov. 4, 2000. Survivors include four sisters: Betty Blankenship and husband, Alda, Tulsa, Okla.; Wilma Thomas and husband, Wayne, Grundy; Carol Wagner, Burbank, Calif.; and Brenda Ward and husband, Raymond, Tazewell, Va.; three brothers, Kennith Wagner and wife, Linda, Tazewell, Va.; Tommy Wagner and wife, Pam, Patrick Springs, Va.; and Billys Wagner and wife, Genee, Salisbury, N.C. BUCHANAN COUNTY, Va. -- Funeral services for Andy Basil Cantrell will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain, Va. The Revs. Troy Lester and Ralph Horton will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill with military graveside rites by John Ratliff Post 164 of the Americna Legion. Mr. Cantrell, 74, of the Horne Mountain section died Friday, April 28, 2000, in a Richlands hospital. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. H.C. BIG ROCK, Va. -- Helen Virginia Ramey, 86, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, in a Grundy hospital. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Ance and Lessie Roberts, was a homemaker and a member of Big Rock Church of Christ for 24 years. She was the widow of Carl Ramey. Surviving are a son, Jessie Ramey of Cedar Bluff; six daughters, Betty Breeding, Mrs. Ralph (Agnes) Cordle and Phyllis Leonard, all of Big Rock, Shirley Burnette and Paula Thornbury, both of Pikeville, Ky., and Mrs. Richard (Mary) Justus of Grundy; a half-brother, Ance Roberts Jr. of Abingdon; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Big Rock Church of Christ by Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy. Evangelists Bob Miller, Michael Trent and Jim Viers will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock. CEDAR BLUFF -- Hazel Lee Horne Boyd, 81, died Sunday, April 30, 2000, at home. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Ezra Maze and Nannie Belle Lowe Horne. She was a member of Richlands Tabernacle for 45 years and the widow of Frank Boyd. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Bob (Geneva) Sanders, Mrs. Fred (Betty Josephine) Altizer and Mrs. Richard (Shirley) Toutaint, all of Williamsburg, Va., and Mrs. Jack (Ruby) Bragunier of Greencastle, Pa.; two sons, Cecil Boyd of Mocksville, N.C., and the Rev. Roger Boyd of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Margaret Endicott of Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Ira (Mavis) Horne of Richlands; a brother, James Horne of Cedar Bluff; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands. The Revs. Ralph Horton, Bob Osborne and Mike Roberts will officiate. VANSANT, Va. -- Gertie May Childress Arms, 86, of the Leemaster area, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Sparrell and Martha V. Owens Childress. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Little Martha Old Regular Baptist Church and a housewife. She was the widow of Vince E. Arms. Surviving are a daughter, Kelsey Jean Earp of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two sons, Josh Jerry Vince Arms of Grundy and Tivis Arthur Arms of Mayodan, N.C.; a brother, Andy Granville Childress of Betsy Layne, Ky; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ancil Childress, elder Jackie Church and evangelist Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mr. Skeens, 75, formerly of Buchanan County, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, in Harbor Hospital in Baltimore. He was a son of the late John Skeens and Roxie Stiltner Skeens. He was a minister for 45 years, pastor and organizer of Jumper Hole Road Eternal Pentecostal Church of Christ and pastor for 25 years of North Eastern Conference District of the Eternal Pentecostal Churches of Christ, which are headquartered in London, Ohio. He was owner//operator of Baltimore Crane Rentals. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lola M. Shortridge Skeens; three sisters, Della Graham and Jetty M. Palmer, both of Florida, and Elloise Keen of Virginia; three brothers, Earl Skeens of Florida, Troy Skeens of Maryland and Taw Skeens of Grundy; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Skeens was also preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Skeens and Curtis Skeens. Pallbearers will be Freddie Shortridge, Johnny Shortridge, Carl Shortridge, Tony McClanahan, Steve McClanahan, Troy Skeens, Earl Skeens and Keaster Skeens. ROANOKE -- Gladys Lester "Tiny" Wachob, 66, formerly of Harman, Va., died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in Roanoke. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Noah and Belva Browning Lester. She lived in Buchanan County before moving to Roanoke four years ago. She was a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church and a former Sunday School teacher and choir member. Surviving are her husband, William R. Wachob; a daughter, Judy W. Sublett of Roanoke; a son, James William Wachob of Bristol Virginia; a sister, Marie Hunt of Kimper, Ky.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don Pope will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mrs. Wachob was also preceded in death by 11 sisters and brothers. Among survivors are a son-in-law, Don Sublett of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Donna Wachob of Bristol Virginia; and three grandchildren, Randi Wachob and Jason Wachob, both of Meadowview, and Charles Sublett of Roanoke. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va., with full military rites by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Mr. Smith, 73, of the Smith Branch section, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a son of the late William Harrison Smith and Frankie Vance Smith. He was of the Holiness faith and attended Deliverance Tabernacle Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion and a retired coal miner from Harman Mining Corp., where he was employed for 47 years. He was a member of UMWA Local Union 7025. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Virginia Beatrice Walters Smith; two daughters, Sarita Smith of Chicago, Mrs. David (Kathy) Looney of Vansant, Va.; a son, Harold David Smith of Grundy; a sister, Mildred Rogers of California; a brother, Troy Smith of Bassett, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was also preceded in death by two sisters, Alta Smith and Faye Smith; and four brothers, Kermit Smith, Andrew Smith, Curtis Smith and Ken Smith. BUCHANAN COUNTY -- Oma Thacker Kinder, 77, of the Harman section, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital. She was born in Pike County, Ky., a daughter of the late Jessie and Mamie Childress Thacker. She was a member of the Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was the widow of Clarence Kinder. Surviving are three daughters, Betty Kinder-Kirby of Richmond, Judith Hagy of Richlands and Patsy Lockhart of Harman, Va.; a sister, Thelma Fife of Oakwood, Ohio; a brother, Dave Thacker of Mouthcard, Ky.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. Evangelist Frank Crum will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Mrs. Kinder, a loving wife, moither and grandmother, was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Hagy Orander; a sister, Jessie McGuire; and five brothers, Don Thacker, Jack Thacker, Freeda Thacker, Frank Thacker and Ballard Thacker. LEBANON -- Carter Shortridge, 74, of 279 Ridgewood Drive, formerly of Rowe, Va., died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, in a Lebanon hospital. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Thomas and Delia Arwood Shortridge. He was a lifelong resident of Rowe before moving to Lebanon nine years ago. He was a member of Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church and most recently attended Glorious Church. He was an employee of Harman Mining Corp. and retired from Island Creek Coal Co, Beatrice-Pocahontas Mine. He was a member of UMWA Local 1374 in Oakwood, Va. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mae Coleman Shortridge; four daughters, Anna S. Street of Rowe, Judy S. Presley of Honaker, Donna S. Tiller of Hansonville, Va., and Cynthia S. Boyd of Lebanon; three sons, Jerry Shortridge and Larry Shortridge, both of Rowe, and Chester Shortridge of Belfast, Va.; two sisters, Violet Street of Pocahontas and Oakley Slone of Vansant, Va.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Ancil Childress and Lester Sexton will officiate. Burial will be in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Mr. Shortridge was a devoted husband and loving father. Among survivors are many friends. OAKWOOD, VA. -- Lola Griffith Layne, 86, of the Dismal Route section, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy. She was born in Pike County, Ky., a daughter of the late William Frank and Tilda Kinder Griffith. She was a resident of Pike County for several years and moved to Buchanan County in 1937. She was a member of Big Branch Church of Christ for 66 years, where she was a Sunday School teacher and active in other areas of the church. She and her husband owned and operated Clyde Layne General Merchandise Grocery Store for several years. She was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Virgil Clyde Layne; two daughters, Ruby Jean L. Ratliff of Abingdon and Garnette Ann L. Stewart of Roanoke; two sons, Dallas Layne of Pikeville and Donald L. Layne of Oakwood; four sisters, Sophia G. Smith of Abingdon, Ruby G. Fletcher of Johnson City, Beatrice G. Keene of Mouth Card, Ky., and Shelby Jean G. Compton of Grundy; a brother, Leo Griffith of Grundy; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. Among survivors are a son-in-law, Frank Ratliff of Abingdon; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Layne of Oakwood; three brothers-in-law, Alvie Fletcher of Johnson City, Marcum Keene of Mouth Card and Blake Compton of Grundy; and a sister-in-law, Patty Griffith of Grundy. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Layne Ross, David Layne, Paul Layne, James Rasnake, Charles Edward Yates and Bill Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be men of Big Branch Church of Christ. There will be services in the funeral home chapel at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GRUNDY -- Lula Mae Stiltner Blankenship, 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, in Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late William Henry and Mary E. Hogston Stiltner. She was a lifelong resident of the Grundy area, a member of Grundy Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was the widow of Ira H. Blankenship. Surviving are two grandsons, Dennis Blankenship and Richard Wayne Blankenship, both of Grundy; two great-grandchildren, Tina Rena White of Oakwood, Va., and Dennis Brian Blankenship of Lebanon; and a great-great-granddaughger, Brianna Shea Blankenship of Grundy. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Church of Christ by Grundy Funeral Home. Evangelists Clarence Greenleaf, Michael Trent and Hillary Underwood will officiate. The body will be taken to the church at 5 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mrs. Blankenship was also preceded in death by two daughters, Loraine and Rose Blankenship; five sons, Jessy Lee "Jack" Blankenship on Jan. 3, 1993, Ira Blankenship Jr., Lloyd Denver Blankenship, Arthur Johnson Blankenship and Eugene Blankenship; nine sisters, Anny, Angie, Jane, Vida, Nicketie, Ethel, Judy and Mary; and six brothers, Lon, Robert, John, Thomas, Pete and Ranse Stiltner. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Pallbearers will be Brian Blankenship, Ryan White, Butch Stiltner, Wayne Blankenship, Dennis Blankenship, Ricky Cochran, Roland Lester Jr., Leonard Bowman, Dean Wagner, Arnold Clark, Ira Stiltner, Luther Whitt, Monroe Stiltner, Rodney Lee and Frank Reedy. Honorary pallbearers will be elders and deacons of Grundy Church of Christ. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Services will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the church. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jack Lambert, 64, of 401 Tilley Drive, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at his home. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Roosevelt and Fannie Lambert. He received his masters of education degree from East Tennessee State University and was a retired teacher and principal of Washington County, Va., School System. He was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Lambert; three sons, Steffen Lambert, Denny Lambert and Chris Lambert, all of Bristol Virginia; and two granddaughters. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Gradys Parsons and Davis Whitesides will officiate. Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel with entombment in Glenwood Mausoleum. Mr. Lambert enjoyed operating some rental property in the Bristol area. Among survivors are two precious granddaughters, Christina Lambert of Bristol Virginia and Sarah Lambert of Greensboro, N.C.; and a loving daughter-in-law, Angela Lambert. Pallbearers will be Hubert Keen, Leon Presley, David Odum, Dan Puckett, Ron Keen and J.B. Wampler. Honorary pallbearers will be Guessner Musick, Harlan Church, Bobby Hammond and members of Session of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday before the chapel services in Weaver Funeral Home.

PRATER, Va. -- Agnes Marie Colley Deel, 36, of Sunset Hollow, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a daughter of Edward George Colley of Bandy, Va., and the late Onie Mae Stacy Colley. She was a member of Fountain of Life Tabernacle Church and a homemaker. Surviving, besides her father, are her husband, Larry Lee Deel; a son, Larry Wayne Deel of Prater; a sister, Linda Colley Vandyke of Bandy; a half-sister, Valerie Colley of Richlands; two brothers, Tony Colley and Eddie Dean Colley, both of Grundy; her grandmother, Juanita Stacy of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. George Proffit will officiate. Burial will be in Stiltner Cemetery near the church on Poplar Creek, Route 2, Grundy. Pallbearers will be Eric Stiltner, Bobby Cox, Chris Skeens, John Ramey, Robbie Davis, Arvill Quinley, Larry Mosley and Tim Riffe. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel. There will be services in the funeral home chapel at 7 p.m. Sunday. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
