Anne Herron Johnson

Raised in slightly Victorian Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, schooled at Miss Doherty's College Preparatory School for Girls and Chatham Hall, she had a taste for adventure which she found in Charlottesville when she left school early and went to work in an architects' office.

In 1938, she married one of the bosses, Floyd Johnson, who became and remained closely allied with Monticello and neo-classical architecture in and beyond Albemarle for over 60 years.

Together they rescued a derelict house near Scottsville, where they raised five children and lived until his death and the recent decline of her health.

They spent many hours with family and friends in the mountains, and were the original James River canoers and tubers.

Anne loved to entertain, worked hard in her gardens, volunteered for the Scottsville Rescue Squad, St. Annešs Parish, the Scottsville Library and numerous activities over the years, and long enjoyed a sewing circle which predated official feminism.

During the war years, she traveled with her growing family to be near her husband, but always managed the home and farm through years of tumultuous change to the country and Albemarle County.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999, her daughter, Mary Stuart, in 1969; her sister, Louise Locke of Setauket, N.Y.; and half brother, Andrew Herron, of West Palm Beach, Fla.

A service in celebration of her life will be held at Christ Church, Glendower, in August.

The family is very grateful to the staffs at Winterhaven and Hospice for their generous, loving help and care of their mother as she was dying.
