Posey Martin

RINGGOLD - Posey Martin, 78, 2785 Mountain Hill Road, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 29, 1997, at his residence.

Born Feb. 12, 1919, in Franklin County, he was a son of Charlie Craft Martin and Cynthia Chaney Martin.

He was married to Josie Pyrtle Martin, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.

He had spent most of his life in the Mountain Hill community of Pittsylvania County.

For many years, he worked at Dan River Inc., and later was a farmer.

He was a member of V.F.W. Ballard Pruitt Post No. 647, and he was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include three daughters, Margaret Ann Adkins of the Mountain Hill community, Marie Tate of Eden, N.C., and Janie Payne of Danville; two sisters, Hattie Davis and Hilda Cullop, both of Danville; two brothers, Claben Martin of the Mountain Hill community and Troy Martin of Ringgold; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William G. Mizelle. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be performed by the American Legion Post 325 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence.

Angie Matherly

Angie Hammock Matherly, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, at Gretna Health Care Center.

Born June 5, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of William Homer Hammock and Lillian Pruitt Hammock.

She was married to Joe Arthur, who predeceased her. She was later married to Lloyd Hampton Matherly Sr., who also predeceased her.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Sandy Level Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Quitman Arthur and L.H. Matherly Jr., both of Sandy Level, and Ken Matherly of Chatham; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Sandy Level Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Ashworth and the Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial will be in Liberty Memorial cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 tonight at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home, and other times at the residence of her son, Ken Matherly, 1135 Lark Drive, Chatham.

Douglas Motley

Douglas Lee Motley, 70, 418 Kemper Road, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Forest View Care Center in Forest Grove, Ore.

Born Jan. 21, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of John Burch Motley and Leeland Land Motley.

On Sept. 20, 1953, he was married to Lottie Starr Motley, who survives.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

He was a member of V.F.W. Post 647.

He attended the Dallas Aviation School and V.P.I.

He was a retired safety representative and worked for John W. Daniel Co., and Virginia Dept. of Labor and Industry and M.W. Manufacturing Co.

He was an amateur radio operator under the call letters "W4RKM."

He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, and served as Bishop of Danville Ward for more than four years.

In addition to his wife of Danville, survivors include a son, John Steven Motley of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Teresa M. Arnold of Henderson, Nev.; a brother, Bill B. Motley; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Jared Motley.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints by Bishop William Collins. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Melvyn Smith

Melvyn Leon Smith, 57, 1132 Halifax Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, at Piney Forest Health Care Center after 10 years of declining health.

Born Nov. 5, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of Howard Clifton Smith and Estelle Millstead Smith.

He had lived his life in the Glenwood community, and was employed with Dan River, Inc., as a roller repair person in the roller shop before his decline in health.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a half sister, Cornelia Johnson of Danville; and two brothers, Eugene L. Smith of Danville and Edwin Ronald Smith of South Boston.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Floral Hills Memory Gardens by the Rev. Roy Newton.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Fannie Webb

CHATHAM - Fannie A. Webb, 90, 2533 Strawberry Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 27, 1997, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1907, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Sammie Grant and Ann Mack Grant.

She was married to Joe Webb, who predeceased her.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Hopel Chapel Baptist Church in Dry Fork.

Survivors include three daughters, Geraldine Fuller and Annie Fuller, both of Chatham, and Louise Inge of Dry Fork; a son, Frank "Dink" Webb of Chatham; a sister, Mary Leftwich of Chatham; a brother, George C. Grant of Lumberton, N.C.; 24 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Inez W. Tarpley; two sons, Tommie Joe Webb and Louis E. Webb; a sister, Sallie Chappell; and two brothers, Frank Grant and Sammie Grant.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Hopel Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Delaware Clark. Burial will be in Callands Baptist Church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home, Gretna, is in charge of arrangements.

Isabel Bennett

Isabel Nofal Hagar Bennett, 89, formerly of Clement Avenue, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home following eight years of declining health. She had been a resident of Roman Eagle since February 1990.

Born March 27, 1908, in Timmonsville, S.C., she was the daughter of Alexander Nofal and Hannah Safy Nofal.

She was married to George Alexander Hagar, who predeceased her. She was later married to Charles Roger Bennett, who died Aug. 16, 1975.

Since 1938, she had been a resident of Danville. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, and a member of Ladies Benevolent Society. For over 40 years, she volunteered at Danville Regional Medical Center.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Burial Park by the Rev. Jack F. Heinsohn Jr.

Gladys Callands

JAVA - Gladys Glass Callands, 76, 408 Riceville Road, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 29, 1997, at her residence.

Born Sept. 21, 1921, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Lonnie Glass and Bridie Petty Glass.

She was married to Booker T. Callands Jr., who predeceased her.

Prior to her disability, she was employed by the Pittsylvania County School Board as cafeteria manager at Mt. Airy Elementary School.

She was a member of Riceville Baptist Church and a charter member of Eastern Star Chapter 168 of Riceville.

Survivors include two daughters, Althera Clark of Java and Lola Harper of Danville; a foster daughter, Rosie Layne of Albany, N.Y.; two foster sons, Hurt Callands of Clinton, Md., and Anthony Callands of Danville; two brothers, Lloyd George Glass of Java and Howard Glass of Gretna; a sister, Florence Fitzgerald of Java; three grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Charlie Glass and Carter Glass.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Riceville Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronnie Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Aubrey Harris III

Aubrey Junior Harris III, 6, 1575 Richmond Blvd., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997.

Survivors include his mother, Helen Clark of the residence; his father, Aubrey J. Harris Jr. of Graham, N.C.; three brothers, Cordaze Chandler of the residence, Douglas Clark of Madison, N.C., and Demetri Harris of Graham, N.C.; two sisters, Shantana Clark of the residence and Aubreya Harris of Burlington, N.C.; his maternal grandmother, Laverne H. Clark of Madison, N.C.; his maternal grandfather, Sammy Clark of Greensboro, N.C.; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Orbit Lee Richmond of Burlington, N.C.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home Chapel in Madison, N.C. Burial will be in Eden Gardens cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1:30-2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at the residence of Laverne Clark, 918 Fern St., Apartment A, Madison, N.C.

Olivia 'Sue' Jones

PHILADELPHIA - Olivia "Sue" Pritchett Jones, 68, 5429 Cedar Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at Manor Care Hospital in Philadelphia.

Born May 12, 1929, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Wiley Pritchett and Mable Ferguson Pritchett.

She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, and was an L.P.N. for Veterans Administration Hospital in Philadelphia.

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Carter and Stasia Darryl Jones, both of Philadelphia; two sons, Gerald Jones and Hanif Abdul-Rashid, both of Miami; two brothers, William H. Pritchett of Danville and Wiley N. Pritchett of Philadelphia; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas Johnson Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The remains may be viewed at the L.H. Brooks & Bro. Funeral Home today until 8 p.m.

The family will be at 6545 Old Richmond Road.
