Harriet Ming

Harriet Howarth Ming, 90, died Thursday morning, Dec. 3, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home.

Born May 6, 1908, in Westfield, N.J., she was the daughter of William Howarth and Harriet Chariton Howarth.

She was married to Herbert Edward Ming, who predeceased her on Oct. 25, 1986.

She was a resident of Danville since 1975, and was a member of Northview Presbyterian Church. She was a former executive secretary with Mack Trucking Company, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Harriet M. Thompson of Danville; one brother, Myrton Howarth of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and one grandchild.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at Northview Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Adolf Otersen and the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, 115 Wendin Lane.

James McKeever

CHATHAM - James McKeever, 76, of 409 Spruce Hill, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998.

Born Sept. 9, 1922, he was the son of James Guy McKeeve and Muriel Godwin McKeever.

He was married to Nan Sours McKeever, who predeceased him May 14, 1994.

He was retired from the Pittsylvania County School System after 30 years. He served at Gretna High School as coach of football and track, athletic director, physics and chemistry teacher.

He ws a graduate of Virginia Tech, and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a captain in the United States Army and served in World War II. He received the Silver and Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Medal. He served on the Chatham Town Council from Sept. 1, 1994, until Aug. 31, 1998. He served on the Board of Directors of Oak Grove Lodge and the Chatham Volunteer Fire Department. He was a past president of the Cedars Country Club, having served in that position for 12 years. He was active with historical dramas with music written by Frances Hallam Hurt.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lee M. Black of Chatham; one brother, James Guy McKeever of Summerville, S.C.; one grandson, Cameron James Ayres of Chatham; and a son-in-law, William P. Black of Chatham.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Chatham Burial Park with Father David McGuire officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence of the son-in-law, 338 North Main Street.

Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harriet Ming

Harry Rhudy

Harry Pope Rhudy, 89, of 120 Westmore Drive, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 4, 1998, at his residence.

Born Jan.13, 1909, in Oklahoma, he was the son of Pyott Samuel Rudy and Kizzie Lee Funk Rhudy.

He was married to Evelyn Frances Cantrell Rhudy, who survives.

He was formerly employed as a clerk in the boiler room at Dan River Mills for 16 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one son, Clark Lee Rhudy of Pleasanton, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Betty Cantrell Carneal of Richmond and JoAnn Cantrell Bradley of Newport News; one sister, Helen Rhudy Cording of Wallace, N.C.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Burial Park with the Rev. J.C. Raper officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Townes Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

William Rigney

DRY FORK - William Jaycob Rigney, 3, of 1652 Hill Creek Road, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born July 14, 1995, in Danville, he was the son of Michael Douglas Rigney and Christina Farthing Rigney, who survive.

He had lived his entire live in Dry Fork and attended the Swansonville Pentacostal Holiness Church.

In addition to his parents of the residence, survivors include one sister, Mason Dawn Rigney of the home; maternal grandparents, Rudy Farthing and Shirley Parrish Farthing of Chatham; paternal grandparents, Madison Rigney and Linda Hardy Rigney of Dry Fork; paternal great-grandmothers, Virginia Mitchell and Irene Scearce of Dry Fork; and paternal step-great-grandfather, Roy Scearce of Dry Fork.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Swansonville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Mike Hearp officiating. Interment icon will be in the family cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Swansonville Pentacostal Holiness Church and at other times at the residence.

Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kent White

John Kent White, 81, of 6137 Slatesville Road, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, at his residence.

Born Dec. 20, 1916, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of A. Cooper White and Lydia Byrd Dodson White.

He was married Feb. 1, 1936, to Gladys Dunn White, who survives.

He had lived his entire life in the Keeling community and was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Ingram Christian Church.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include one daughter Joan W. Shelton of Java; two sons, Lonnie White and Kevin White, both of Keeling; three sisters, Evelyn Ingram of Keeling, Adele Lewis of Knightdale, N.C., and Lucy Saunders of Danville; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Burial Park with the Rev. Herman Absher officiating.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the residence.

Queen Willis

YANCEYVILLE - Queen Goins Price Willis, of 4651 Hwy 158 West, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born April 26, 1928, in Danville, Va., she was the daughter of Jack Goins and Beatrice Thompson Goins.

She was married to Solomon Willis, who predeceased.

She was a renowned gospel singer. She was the founder and leader of the gopsel group, Sister Queen Willis and the Gospel Allstars and was a member of the former group Gospel Four. She joined Smith Chapel and later became a member of Blackwell Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Circle, Senior Choir, Pastor's Aid, church musician and choir director. She was also a retired teachers aide in the Caswell County school system and was a school bus driver.

Survivors include three sons, John H. Price, Jr. of Reidsville, Roger Lee Price and James William Price, both of Yanceyville; one daughter, Elsie M. Long of Yanceyville; three step-daughters, Margo Crisp of Mebane, N.C., Elaine Anderson of Long Island, Va. and Sharon Clark of Lynchburg; one foster son, Donald Gunn of Reidsville; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Blackwell Baptist Church with the Rev. Everett Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. at the church and at other times at the residence.

Henry Bourne

Dr. Henry Reid Bourne, 92, of 1111 Main St, Stratford House, died Saturday night, Dec. 5, 1998, at Danville Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 7, 1906, in Wythe County, he was the son of William A. Bourne and Mary Watkins Bourne.

He was married to the former Virginia Holmes Davis on April 15, 1939, who predeceased him October 28, 1987.

He attended undergraduate school at the University of Virginia from 1924-1926 and graduated from the university of Virginia Medical School in 1930.

He did his surgical internship and residency in Baltimore from 1930-1934. His career in private practice of medicine in Danville spans from July 1934 until July 1987, except for military service during World War II when he served as an officer in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was commanding officer of the only U.S. Field Hospital in the Soviet Union from 1943 to 1944. His military service also included Fort Worth Texas, Iceland and western Germany, until being honorably discharged in 1945.

He practiced part-time at the Mental Health Clinic in Danville from 1988 to 1996. His medical career spanned 66 years. He was a member of the American College of Surgery.

Survivors include three sons, Dr. Henry R. Bourne, Jr. of Mill Valley, Calif., Prof. Richard W. Bourne of Baltimore, and W. Randolf Bourne of Saint Paul, Minn.; and five grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday. A memorial reception and celebration will be held 2-5 p.m. in the Evergreen Room at Stratford House.

The family will receive friends at the residence 7-9 p.m. Friday.

David East

John David East, Sr., 83, of 17 Ashlawn Drive died Friday afternoon, Dec. 4, 1998, in the Piney Forest Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1915, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of John Jefferson East and Nellie Forney East.

He was married to Edith Maxie East on Dec. 23, 1938, who survives.

He lived most of his life in Danville and had worked for Dan River Inc. and later with the CIT group. He was a member of The Tabernacle.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include a daughter, Bertha E. Vaughan of Hurt; two sons, James C. East of Clarksville and John David East, Jr. of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Paul East and Sam East, both of Sheva; three sisters, Edna E. Townsend of Sheva, Ora E. Purdue of Edison, N.J., and Gladys E. Lewis of Lynchburg; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. today at The Tabernacle with the Rev. Lamarr Mooneyham officiating. Interment icon will be in the Mountain View cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Herman Lowe

Herman Edward Lowe, 85, of 255 Brightwell Court, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, in the Riverside Health Care Center.

Born April 19, 1913, in Danville, he was the son of Clate Everret Lowe and Lucy Lester Lowe.

Lowe was married to Empress Samuels Lowe, who survives.

He was retired from Dan River Inc. where he was employed as a store keeper. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he had served as an Elder and Ward Clerk.

In addition to his wife of the residence, survivors include a son, Carl D. Lowe, of Roanoke; two daughters, Judith L. Martin of Leesburg and Brenda L. Watlington of Danville; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop W.T. Collins, Jr. officiating. Interment icon will be in Highland Burial Park.

The family will receive friends following the service at the residence.

Townes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Emma Mangum

ALTON - Emma Tuck Mangum, 86, of 2187 Harmony Road, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at The Woodview in South Boston.

Born June 10, 1912, in Person County, she was the daughter of Ethorn Tuck and Bedie Morris Tuck.

She was married to Robert M. Mangum, who predeceased her.

She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, Sonny Mangum of Roxboro, N.C. and Bernice Mangum of Alton; one brother, Walter Tuck of Roxboro; two sisters, Mattie West and Ruth Phelps, both of Roxboro; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Bobby Mangum; and three daughters, Elizabeth Mangum, Malinda Roberts and Daisy Hendricks.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Harmony United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 at Brooks Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of his son, Sonny Mangum, at 209 Winsor Drive, Roxboro.
