Grace T. Hedgecoe

DANVILLE, Va. - Vivian Grace Talbott Hedgecoe, 88, formerly of 723 Arnett Boulevard, died Friday, September 28, 2001, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home after 3 years of declining health and 2 years as a resident at Roman Eagle.
Born April 1, 1913, in Gretna, VA, she was the daughter of Rober J. Talbott (deceased) and Sarah Will Lewis Talbott (deceased).
She was married to Luther Hedgecoe, who died October 22, 1983. Mrs. Hedgecoe lived her life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville area, where she was employed in the Number 3 dress department at Dan River Inc. and was also a baby sitter for a number of years prior to her retirement. Mrs. Hedgecoe was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include Daughter: June H. Guill of Danville, VA; Son: Clyde W. Hedgecoe of Lexington, NC; 2 Sisters: Cordelia T. Wallace of Danville, VA and Katie M. Huffstetler of Danville, VA; Special Friend: Nellie Moore, a Resident of Roman Eagle; 7 Grandchildren; 15 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great-Grandchild.
She was predeceased by Son: Troy Lee Hedgecoe; Brother: Guy Talbott and 2 Sisters: Lucille Anglin and Thelma Simms.
The funeral will be held Monday, October 1, 2001 at 11:00 AM at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with The Reverend Daniel Lackey officiating. Interment icon will be at Highland Burial Park.
The family received friends Sunday, 9-30-01 from 7:00 til 8:30 PM at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel and other times at the daughters’ residence 141 Nelson Ave.

Sandra Janowski

CHATHAM, Va. - Sandra Ann Janowski, 49, of 184 Lester Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the residence.
Born June 30, 1952, in Newark, N.J., she was a daughter of George Janowski and Stella Czerwinski Janowski. She was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include two sisters, Barbara J. Hamberger of Dover, N.J. and Joyce J. Stanzione of Island Pond, Vt.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Scott Funeral Home with Father David V. McGuire officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Scott Funeral Home.
Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marcie Kaiser

SEBRING, Fla. - Marcie Morton Kaiser, 90, of 13 Maranatha Boulevard, died Sunday morning, Sept. 30, 2001, at Stratford Health Care Center, where she had been a resident since June 29, 2001.
Born Jan. 8, 1911, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of Herbert E. Morton and Annie Rosalie Diaz Morton.
She was first married to the Rev. Paul M. Cell, who predeceased her and later married Walter Kaiser, who also predeceased her. She lived in New Jersey for many years and graduated from Hadden Heights High School, Glassboro Normal College and New Jersey State Teachers College in Patterson, N.J. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Education from the National Bible Institute of New York. She was in the United States Army from 1943-1946, during World War II, and earned the rank of Sergeant. She was a teacher for 40 years prior to her retirement in 1971. She was a resident of Maranatha Village for 18 years and was a resident of Stratford Assisted Living from Dec. 22, 2000 until June 22.
Survivors include her sister, Dorothy R. White of Danville, Va.
The funeral will be held in Sebring.

Neva ‘Peggie’ Kiser

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Neva Bervelle “Peggie” Kiser was born in Danville, Va., to Corrie D. Harris and Richard D. Harris. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of September 30, 2001, after a long, fulfilled life. She was a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She spent many years in nursing and social services work and as an instructor of nursing. She had a passion for her church, family, golf, bridge and reading. She was a wonderful wife to her husband, Adolphus G. “Jack” Kiser, who predeceased her. She will be missed by her sister, Hazel H. Davis and her nephew and wife, Richard and Shelby Davis, all of Danville, Va., and her niece and husband, Dawn and Eddie Hearp of Roanoke, Va. Aunt “Piggie” and Aunt “P” as she was affectionately called, will also be sorely missed by her great-niece and husband, Shelley and Taz Cooper, great-nephew and wife, Todd and Anne Hearp and four great, great nieces and nephew, Abby Cooper, Kristin, Caroline and Gregory Hearp, all of Roanoke, Va. She spent most of her life in Tazwell County, Va., before she and her husband retired to Titusville, Florida. She returned to her beloved Virginia in 1993 and lived in Martinsville at King’s Grant Retirement Community. A memorial service will be held in her honor at King’s Grant Victory Chapel on Thursday, October 4th at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to King’s Grant Fellowship Fund, 350 King’s Way Road, Martinsville, Va. 24112.

Hilton Lawrence Sr.

CHATHAM, Va. - Nathaniel Hilton Lawrence Sr., 79, of 558 Museville Road, died Sept. 28, 2001, at the residence after several years of declining health.
Born Sept. 4, 1922, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of James Lawrence and Abbie Adkins Lawrence.
He was married Feb. 25, 1949, to Edna Mae Powell Larence, who survives. He lived all his life in Pittsylvania County, where he worked as a slicer operator in 4-B Dress in the Schoolfield Division of Dan River Inc. for 27 years prior to his retirement. He later retired as a driver for the Gibson’s Charter Bus Service after 40 years of service. He was an active member of Oak Ridge Christian Church, the Callands Fire Department and American Legion Post 232 in Gretna. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of the residence, include three sons, Pastor Hylton Lawrence Jr. of Sutherlin, Roger Nathan Lawrence of Danville and Joseph David Lawrence of the residence; five brothers, Leland Lawrence and Randolph Lawrence, both of Chatham, Leory Larence of Rocky Mount, J.E. Larence of Martinsville and Wayne Lawrence of Danville; two sisters, Kitty Lee Lawrence of Danville and Linda L. King of Halifax and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wrenn-Yeatts Wrestover Chapel with Pastor Hylton Lawrence Jr., the Rev. Jack Oakes and the Rev. Kenneth McFarthing officiating. Interment icon will follow at Adkins and Lawrence Family cemetery on Sago Road with Military Honors performed by American Legion Post 1097.
The family received friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and other times at the residence.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Adkins and Lawrence Family cemetery Fund, 558 Museville Road, Chatham, Va. 24531.

Bessie Leftwich

CHATHAM, Va. - Bessie Inge Leftwich, 76, of 7101 Strawberry Road, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the Piney Forest Nursing Center in Danville.
Born July 15, 1925, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of Bruce and Fannie Mae Woods Inge.
She was married to Charlie Robert Leftwich, who predeceased her.
Survivors include one son, Bruce Leftwich of Alexandria; one sister, Naomi Witcher of Camden, N.J.; three brothers, Nathaniel Inge of Axton and Benjamin Harrison Inge and Vanderbilt Inge, both of Danville.
The funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Guildfield Missionary Baptist Church in Dry Fork with the Rev. Harold Vann officiating. Interment icon will follow at Union Hall Baptist Church cemetery in Chatham.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

John Marsella Sr.

DOTHAN, Ala. - Dr. John Jerry Marsella, Sr., 85, of Dothan, Alabama, died there Saturday, September 22, 2001.
Memorial services will be held 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 28, 2001 at First United Methodist Church Chapel in Dothan. Graveside services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sun. Sept. 30, 2001, at Danville Memorial Gardens in Danville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, PO Box 1170, Dothan, AL, 36302.
Dr. Marsella was born April 22, 1916 in Amsterdam, NY and lived the early years of his life in Schenectady, NY. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corp. Dr. Marsella graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and began his practice in 1948. He was an OBGYN Physician for the past 47 years until retiring in 1995. Dr. Marsella resided in Richmond, VA prior to moving to Dothan this past July. He was a member of the Danville Rotary Club and the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Danville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Dean Marsella and a daughter, Judith Ellen Gonzales.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jerry and Janet Marsella, Jr., Dothan; a daughter, Jane Drake, Poolesville, MD; a son-in-law, Gilbert Gonzales, Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, Christine Drake, Lindsay Gonzales, John Gilbert Gonzales, John Francis Marsella and Benjamin Green Marsella; two brothers, Nicholas Morsillo and James Morsillo, both of Schenectady, NY; several nieces and nephews.

Pauline Rawley

DANVILLE, Va. - Pauline Gentry Rawley, 75, of 192 Cumberland Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 25, 1926, in Danville, she was a daughter of Roby Edward Gentry and Flora Alice Bradley Gentry.
She was married March 14, 1947, to Albert Keesee Rawley Sr., who survives. She was employed with Dr. John J. Neal Jr. for 30 years prior to her retirement as office manager. She was a member of Druid Hills Baptist Church, where she was a former secretary.
Survivors, in addition to her husband of the residence, include one son, Albert K. “Buddy” Rawley Jr. of Danville; one daughter, Mary Alice Rawley Meeks of Danville; one brother, Carl “Pee Wee” Gentry of Danville; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased, in addition to her parents, by two brothers, Frank Gentry and Earl Gentry and two sisters, Elsie Gentry Isley and Margaret “Teenie” Gentry Bryan.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Townes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Adams and the Rev. James McGee officiating. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Townes Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
The family suggests memorials be made to Danville Life Saving Crew or the Salvation Army.

Sara Rodgers

DANVILLE, Va. - Sara Louise Rodgers, 65, of 418 N. Ridge St., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at the residence.
Born Aug. 30, 1936, in Newport News, she was a daughter of Sandy and Cornelia Whitfield Cofield.
She was married to William Rodgers, who survives. She was a retired speech-language pathologist with Danville Public Schools.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one daughter, Avila R. Wimbush of Portsmouth; two sisters, Dorothy Colfield and Sandra Colfield, both of Portsmouth; and two granddaughters.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father David McGuire officiating, where a Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated. Interment icon will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Fisher and Watkins Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Carolyn Tanner

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. - Carolyn Williams Tanner, 69, of 1105 Glass Mill Road, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Danville Regional Medical Center in Danville.
Born April 9, 1932, in Halifax County, she was the daughter of Louise Hankins Williams and Henry Williams.
Survivors include one daughter, Charlene Lofton of Henderson, N.C.; one granddaughter; four sisters, Margaret Coleman of Leasburg, N.C., Annie Hamilton of Haledon, N.J., Martha Glass and Sandra Williams, both of South Boston; nine brothers, Willie Williams of Leasburg, N.C., Henry Williams of Henderson, N.C., Tommie Williams of Yanceyville, N.C., Charlie Williams and Clevester Williams, both of Vernon Hill, Roy Williams, Wonell Williams and Robert Williams, all of South Boston and Ronald Williams of Upper Marlboro, Md.
The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Mountain Grove Baptist Church in South Boston with the Rev. Arthur Crews officiating. Interment icon will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
The family will receive friends at the residence.

Charles Waddell

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Charles K. Waddell Sr., 86,
formerly of Danville, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Westminster-Canterbury.
Born Dec. 6, 1914, in Selma, N.C., he was a son of John B. Waddell and Ida H. Waddell.
He was first married to Bernice Heard Waddell, who predeceased him Dec. 31, 1988, and later married Amy Harlan Waddell, who survives. He had been a resident of Charlottesville for two years. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany and had served with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre of Operations for over four years. He was a retired sales supervisor with the Danville Tobacco Market, with which he was associated for more than 30 years.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of Charlottesville, include one son, Charles K. Waddell Jr. of Charlottesville; one daughter, Shep Morrison of Axton; one brother, John B. Waddell of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Helen Dedeominick of Virginia Beach and Anna Bullock of Warrenton, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mountain View cemetery with the Rev. James W. Mathieson officiating.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1490 Pantops Mountain Plaza, Suite 200, Charlottesville, Va. 22911.
