CHESAPEAKE -- Lula Mae Cooley of the 400 block of Longdale Crescent died Jan. 13, 2002. The widow of Earl Cooley, she retired as a beautician from Crestwood Beauty Salon. She was a member of Garrett Community Baptist Church, the Deaconess Ministry, United Order of Tents, Annie B. Morring No. 607, and United Order of Tents, Lois Cason No. 787. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Elliott and husband Vernon of Chesapeake; two sisters, Elma L. Adams of Chesapeake and Betty M. Bell of North Carolina; a brother, David Jones of Baltimore; a grandchild; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be at noon Thursday in Garrett Community Baptist Church, Victoria Avenue, Norfolk, by Bishop Johnnie Reid Jr. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Garden, Norfolk. Evelyn Dunbar
CHESAPEAKE -- Evelyn Dunbar, 82, died Jan. 14, 2002, at Englewood Community Hospital, Englewood, Fla. A native of Chesapeake, she was the daughter of the late John and Bessie Dail of Elizabeth City, N.C., and the widow of Wheeler Dunbar of Chesapeake. Evelyn was a seamstress, homemaker and loved everyone that knew her. Survivors include her daughters, Judy Moulton of Englewood, Fla., and Fran Old of Chesapeake; a son, Ron Dunbar also of Englewood; a sister, Ruby Olsen of Satellite Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Charles L. Moseley. Interment will follow at Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Rose Marie Otts
CHESAPEAKE -- Rose Marie Otts, 82, died Jan. 13, 2002. She was born in Norfolk to the late Michael Pizzo and Bessie Ringold Pizzo and was the widow of Peter R. Otts. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a real estate agent, an Avon representative, worked as an employment agent for Snelling & Snelling and was an artist. Mrs. Otts was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and Women of the Moose, Lodge No. 898. Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Colucci of Orlando, Fla., and Pamela A. Perucci and her husband Phillip of Norfolk; two sons, Michael F. Perucci and wife Mary of Chesapeake and John R. Perucci Sr. and wife Rebecca of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Bolin of Norfolk; and a niece. A Christian Burial service will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory by Father Christian J. Haydinger. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Lillie H. Smaw-Gordon
CHESAPEAKE -- Lillie H. Smaw-Gordon, 79, of the 900 block of D St., entered into eternal rest on Jan. 12, 2002. She was born in Tarboro, N.C., and was employed with Indian River High School for 22 years. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Columbus Gordon Sr. Survivors include two daughters, Jessie Smaw of Virginia Beach and LaVeta G. Mabry (Melvin) of Chesapeake; five sons, Paul Hayes (Shirley) of Virginia Beach, Edward Smaw Jr. of Portsmouth, Clyde Smaw of Chesapeake, Columbus Gordon Jr. (Connie) of Virginia Beach and Vincent Gordon of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Hattie Roberts (Ed) of Suffolk; a sister, Barbara Anne Coverton of Portsmouth; four brothers, Herman Hayes of Norfolk, Leon, William and Raymond Hayes, all of Suffolk; two adopted sisters, Louise Carter of New York and Blanche Lee of Chicago; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. James T. Barbour
NORFOLK -- James T. "Jim" Barbour, 53, died Jan. 13, 2002. He was a well-known jazz composer and arranger, renowned musician, and multi-instrumentalist. Jim performed with greats such as Joe Jones, Della Reese, Mel Torme, Billy Taylor, Eloise Laws and Frank Sinatra. Known as one of the world's greatest drummers, Jim's original and impressive CD's will not let us forget his respect and love for jazz music. He served in the U.S. Army Band and taught music at Fort Monroe, Va. Jim will be dearly missed by his wife, Ruthie; two sons, Vince and Chad Barbour; two sisters, Dixie L. Garrison and Peggy Barco and husband, Frank; a brother, Al Barbour and wife, Emily; four close cousins, Anthony, Phillip, Joseph, Mirabile and Jean Smith; and many other close cousins, many close friends, especially Robert Adkins. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements. Sylvia W. Carson
NORFOLK -- On Thursday afternoon, Jan. 10, 2002, the Death Angel visited the DePaul Medical Center and quietly took from our family circle, after a short illness, our beloved mother and grandmother, Sylvia Ward Carson of Bonnot Drive. She was born in Suffolk to the late Milton Ward and Mary Ellen Boone on Dec. 2, 1935. She was also predeceased by a brother, Wilbert Wheeler Sr. She was a graduate of East Suffolk High School in Suffolk, and a former member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Suffolk. After moving to Norfolk, she later joined Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained until her passing. She retired from Federal Fleet and Industrial Supply Center of Norfolk for 27 years of service. She was a member of the Area Council Missionary of Norfolk, Adult Sunday School, AARP, Lupus Foundation, Single's Group of Eastern Virginia Chapter, Family Investment Center at Oakmont North, NAACP, No. 2 Choir at Mount Gilead, and Board of Christian Education: Affiliated Mason and Holmes Missionary of Norfolk, Affiliated Women's Auxiliary of Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Convention, Affiliated Virginia Baptist State Convention, Affiliated Tidewater Peninsula Baptist Association, Affiliated BTU Congress: "Missionary of the Year 2001," Election Officer of city of Norfolk; office clerk at one time Bell Atlantic Telephone in South Hampton Roads Area; secretary of Tanners Creek East Civic League of Norfolk; participated with Christian Broadcasting Network Inc.; provided church correspondence to Military Families; and volunteered as Receptionist for Benevolence. Sylvia was married to Willie Leslie Carson and to this union was born two children. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She dedicated her life for their comfort and enjoyment. She made it known to her family and friends constantly that she was ready to answer when God called her. Her survivors are stepfather, William Boone of Suffolk; two daughters, Sheila Bentley of Virginia Beach and Connie White Sherrill of Willingboro, N.J.; three stepsisters, Delores Simpson of Suffolk, Frances McCray and Virginia Small of New York; four stepbrothers, Calvin of Newport News, Raymond, Edward and Charles Boone of New York; five grandchildren, Marques and Falynn of Virginia Beach, Shauvaun, Nathan and Britni of New Jersey; one great-grandchild, Ymani of New Jersey; two sons-in-law, William Bentley of Virginia Beach and James Sherrill of New Jersey; and a host of other relatives and friends. Samuel A. Cuffee Sr.
NORFOLK -- Samuel Alexander Cuffee Sr., 85, retired employee of the Virginia Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co., went to be with our Lord and Savior after an extended illness on Jan. 12, 2002 at Thornton Hall nursing home. He lived in Norfolk. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Agnes M. Cuffee; a son, Samuel A. Cuffee Jr. and wife, Kathie; an aunt, Beatrice Mullen of Fentress, Va.; four grandchildren; and a host of other relatives. A funeral will be held at noon Thursday at Grace Protestant Episcopal Church, Norfolk. The Rev. Harold Cobb will officiate. Burial will follow in the Roosevelt Memorial Park. James M. Dawson
NORFOLK -- James M. Dawson, 91, of the 8000 block of Galveston Blvd., died Jan. 15, 2002 in Portsmouth. Mr. Dawson was born in Thornburg, Iowa, and retired as a chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy as an aircraft motor mechanic after 21 years of service. He also retired from the civil service and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch No. 60. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 63 years, Owantha Cass Dawson, and his beloved family, Rodger Dawson and wife, Jeannie, Monica Bemb and husband, Tom, Jimmie Cass and wife, Ann, Virginia Cass, Lucille and son, Larry, Geraldine and family, granddaughter, Dianna Byers, Cindy, Sherry, Greg and Tami; and a sister, Lois Holland. NORFOLK -- Mary E. Harrison, 75, of the 8100 block of Turner Road, died Jan. 13, 2002, at a local nursing home. Born in Virginia, she was a retired J.C. Penney bookkeeper. Mary was an avid animal lover. The widow of Garland C. Harrison, she is survived by four sons, Larry and wife, Donna Harrison of Texas, Ronald Harrison of Norfolk, Darryl Harrison and wife, Phyllis Harrison of Georgia, and Vaughn Harrison of Norfolk; and five grandchildren. Rona V. Mitchell
NORFOLK -- Rona V. Mitchell, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, of the 2600 block of Chesapeake Blvd., was called home to be with the Lord Jan. 12, 2002. Rona was a dedicated member of Gideon's Riverside Fellowship and a past member of New Calvary Baptist Church. She was a deaconess, a member of the Pastor's Aid, an honorary usher and member of the Golden Age Club. She was also a former member of the Salvation Army Home League and the Norfolk State University Brambleton Center Senior Citizen's Club. She was predeceased by her husband, David Mitchell Sr.; her mother, Elnora Collins-Emmanuel; her brother, Elijah Collins; her son, Herman E. Mitchell; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She is survived by seven children, Audrey M. Shands of Virginia Beach, David Mitchell Jr. of Bridgeport, Conn., Bernadine R. Marshall of Norfolk, Moses N. Mitchell of Norfolk, Daniel E. Mitchell of Las Vegas, Nev., Maurice C. Mitchell of Norfolk and Linda D. NORFOLK -- Schalante Donte Newsome, 23, died Dec. 29, 2001 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was a native of Portsmouth. He is survived by his mother, Robin Santiago Lindstrom of Jacksonville, N.C.; a sister, Donice Oliver of Gainesville, Fla.; two brothers, Jonathan Newsome of Norfolk and Cordero Oliver of Gainesville, Fla.; maternal grandmother, Georgia Holley of Gainesville, Fla.; and a host of aunts, uncles, a nephew, cousins, in-laws and friends. She is survived by three sons, Frank Oliver Jr. and wife Jean, Kevin Lee Oliver and wife Tammy, all of Virginia Beach and Roger Oliver of Norfolk; a sister, Viola Eccles and husband George of Norfolk; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Rosa M. Rhodes
NORFOLK -- Rosa M. Watts Rhodes, born Sept. 11, 1905, was called to her eternal rest Monday, Jan. 14, 2002. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank E. Rhodes Sr. and son, retired Lt. Cmdr. F.E. Rhodes Jr. She attended Norfolk Public Schools and volunteered in the Norview PTA as a young parent. She was a member of Norview Baptist Church, devoted Sunday School teacher, loving homemaker and an avid gardener. During World War II, she served the Red Cross as a trained nurses aide. Rosa is survived by two daughters, Mildred Shealy of Chesapeake and Jeanne Greif of Norfolk; son-in-law, Conrad A. Greif of Norfolk and daughter-in-law, Beverly Rhodes of Richmond; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by Pastor Herb Holton of Norview Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Friday. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive, is in charge.

Mary Sagnette Steckroth
NORFOLK -- Mary Lou Sagnette Steckroth, 74, wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all, died Jan. 11, 2002, in a local hospital surrounded by her loved ones, following a lengthy bout with cancer. A lifelong resident of Norfolk, she is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Robert J. Steckroth; one daughter, Susan Menke and her husband, Richard, of Chesapeake; and a son, Jeffrey J. Steckroth and his wife, Nikki, of Virginia Beach. She is also survived by a brother, Robert Sagnette of Roanoke; six grandchildren, Jeffrey J. Steckroth Jr. of Norfolk, Wendy L. Shannon and her husband, Mike, Christopher A. Steckroth and Alexander N. Steckroth, all of Virginia Beach, and Katherine K. Menke, and Jennifer Menke, both of Chesapeake. Additional survivors include her sister-in-law, Ruth Farley of Hazleton, Pa., nieces, Mimi Hunter and husband Hampton of Greensboro, N.C., Linda Sims and husband Connie of Hazleton, Pa., and Robert Farley and wife Elaine of Lititz, Pa., Robert Sagnette Jr. and wife Anne of Towson, Md., and Scott Sagnette of Roanoke. Mrs. Steckroth graduated from South Norfolk High School in 1944. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and a 1948 graduate of the College of William and Mary. She later earned her master's degree in guidance and counseling in 1971 from Old Dominion University, which led to a rewarding career in that field. Mrs. Steckroth began her career in education teaching sixth grade at Meadowbrook Elementary School in Norfolk and she also taught at the Ferebee School in Ghent. She later became a guidance counselor with the Virginia Beach Public Schools and worked with students at Bayside Junior High School, Brandon Junior High School, Virginia Beach Middle School, Kempsville High School, and lastly Salem Middle School, from which she retired in 1989. Many wonderful summers were spent at summer camps, including the YMCA Camp in Virginia Beach and the Baptist Camps for Boys in Virginia Beach and Marion, Va. She especially enjoyed her 20 years at Camp Greenbrier in Alderson, W.Va., where she was the camp's dietitian and manager of the Jigger Shop, the camp store. Mrs. Steckroth was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Norfolk, where she served in a number of positions, including Sunday School teacher and volunteer with the Lunch Ministry Program and Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Steckroth had many interests, including traveling, shopping, collecting and spending time with her grandchildren. She was also an avid Duke University basketball fan. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church, Norfolk, with the Rev. Dr. William Trexler officiating. Burial will be private. A reception at the church will follow the funeral service. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, is in charge. PORTSMOUTH -- Fay Schaeffer passed away at her home in Portsmouth on Jan. 8, 2002 after an extended illness. Her two daughters, Jaqueline England and Dianna Thornton, and her grandson, Sterling Thornton survive her. Her family and friends will miss her.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- China E. Carney, 90, of the 5800 block of W. Mastings Arch, died Jan. 9, 2002. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Riddick Funeral Service.

Robert B. Aquilar Sr.
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Robert B. Aquilar Sr. died Jan. 14, 2002 at a Norfolk hospital. He was 82. Born April 7, 1919, he was the oldest son of the late Pedro and Placida Aquilar. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served his country honorably in World War II, having participated in the North African and Italian Campaigns. Notably, he fought for seven months at the Battle of Cassino. He was the proud recipient of Soldier of the Month on several occasions and was also distinguished as Soldier of the Quarter and Soldier of the Year. He later earned his associate's degree from Brookdale Community College while stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J., teaching at the Signal School there. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1963, after 20 years, as a sergeant first class having served his country during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Aquilar also volunteered and served as a civilian in the Vietnam War while working at the Defense Department as a communications specialist. He ended his career still serving his country, with the Dept. of Defense. He was a veteran of three wars. He is survived by and lives in the memory of his beloved wife of 54 years, Gemma Veridicchio Aquilar; two sons, Robert B. Aquilar Jr. of Easton, Md., and David J. Aquilar of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Anna Drake and husband, Randy of Ordinary, Va., Tina Swan and husband, Michael of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Erika Aquilar and Maisle Ostrow of Baltimore, Md.; and his nephew, Greg and wife, Frances Pacheco. He was a proud and devoted husband, father and grandfather. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, followed with military honors. Burial will be private.

Edna B. Blake
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Edna Brooks Blake, 85, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 14, 2002, to join her loving husband of 58 years, Charles Harold Blake Sr. Mrs. Blake was born on Jan. 16, 1916, in Farnworth, England. She relocated to West Virginia at the age of 4. She married her high school sweetheart and then relocated to Norfolk. She leaves behind a loving daughter, Kay Ames Duport as well as her son, Charles Harold Blake Jr.; four grandchildren, Melissa Ames Murphy of Syracuse, N.Y., Gregory Ames of San Diego, Calif., Shelly Koesis of Chesapeake and Stephanie Asher of Virginia Beach. She has one great-grandchild, Christian Asher and is expecting MacKenzie Blake or Gavin James Murphy to be born on Jan. 22, 2002. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Stephen M. Cholewka
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Stephen M. Cholewka, 83, died Jan. 15, 2002 in Sentara Nursing Center. He was retired from Northrop-Grumman where he had worked for 29 years, Stephen was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1941-1946. Stephen participated in two campaigns: the Okinawa and the Philippine. He was first assigned to the USS Wakefield, which took a direct hit by Japanese bombers. He was then assigned to the USS Nourmahal, which was involved with escorting merchant shipping in the South Atlantic and the Caribbean. In 1944 he was transferred to Amphibian force duty in the Pacific. On March 1, 1945 Stephen was transferred to Landing Craft Infantry, taking part in the Okinawa Campaign. On March 9, 1946, he was honorably discharged. Stephen holds the American Defense Ribbon with one star, the American Area Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with one star, the Philippine Defense Ribbon with one star, the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Victory Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal for action in the Okinawa Campaign. Stephen M. Cholewka was born in West Islip, L.I., New York, on Aug. 1, 1918. He was the son of the late Alex and Barbara Cholewka. He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Julia H. Cholewka and his brothers John, Samuel, Michael and sister Dorothy. His son-in-law, Terrance A. Mulligan also predeceased him. He is survived by his only daughter, Julia S. "Nina" Mulligan and granddaughter, Christina Mulligan of Virginia Beach. There will be a memorial service on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. Timothy F. Murphy
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Timothy F. Murphy, 69, died Jan. 14, 2002, at Lake Taylor Hospital. Born in New York City, Mr. Murphy was retired from The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Irish-American Society. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Weymouth Pitts, and the beloved wife of Charles Richard "Dick" Pitts Jr. Jane was a retired financial analyst with Ethyl Corporation; a member of Galilee Episcopal Church; an active member and past regeant of Lynnhaven Parish Chapter D.A.R.; associate member of William Byrd Chapter, D.A.R.; an active member of the Virginia Tidewater Unit, National Association of Parliamentarians. In addition to her devoted husband, Dick, she is survived by two cousins, Charles E. Weymouth Jr. and Frances Strother, both of Richmond. Reuben Wardell Rosamond
SUFFOLK -- Reuben Wardell Rosamond, 73, died Jan. 11, 2002, in his home in Kilmichael, Miss. He was the son of the late James and Lois Rosamond and was predeceased by his brother, Carmen Rosamond and grandsons, Dustin, Jimmy and Bobby. He was a native of Kilmichael and was a resident of Suffolk and had lived in Tidewater since 1966. Mr. Rosamond was a World War II and Korea veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired after 23 years service as a chief petty officer. He more recently retired from Farm Fresh as its meat manager and was the former owner of Reubens, a Virginia Beach restaurant. He was an avid hunter and member of the National Rifle Association and was an active NASCAR fan. His daughters, Debra L. Lipoli and husband Frank of Chesapeake, Nija Rosamond of Maui, Hawaii and Patti Walker and husband Richard of Virginia Beach survive him. He is also survived by a sister, Hilda Pearson of Huma, La., and brothers, Junior Rosamond of Huma, and Ozell Rosamond of Montgomery, Ala.; grandson, Derek Lipoli of Chesapeake; and many loving friends including his companion, Dorothy Miller of Suffolk and special friend, Nicole. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Chesapeake Chapel, with burial in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. FRANKLIN -- William Lester Butler, 71, passed away Jan. 14, 2002, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Southampton County, he was a son of the late Samuel O. Butler Sr. and Eulalah Minton Butler. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was retired as bookkeeper in the accounting department of Union Camp after 40 years service. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and recently served five years as president of the Senior Citizen Group. Survivors include two sons, Samuel O. Butler Jr. and Marvin M. Butler and his wife, Edna, all of Franklin; a nephew, Ronald Butler and his wife, Bonnie, of Suffolk; a great-nephew, Kendall Butler; and a special cousin, Jean H. Drewry of Franklin. FRANKLIN -- Overseer Jesse Pedro Hanshaw Jr. of the 1300 block of Mariner St., died Jan. 11, 2002 at Norfolk Sentara Hospital. A member and the pastor of Gospel Tabernacle Church, Cape Charles, and the general overseer of Apostolic Faith Church of God Live On, Grace Mary Church, Melfa, and he received his honorary Doctorate of Divinity. Overseer Hanshaw was a veteran of the U.S. Army, served his country for four years and was on active duty in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Hattie M. Hanshaw of Franklin; a daughter, Amanda H. Lane of Richmond; three sons, Pedro M. Hanshaw of Franklin, Calvin L. Hanshaw of Chesapeake, Stephany D. Hanshaw of Suffolk; his stepmother, Helen Hanshaw; a sister, Evora Watson of Atlantic, Va.; a brother, Isaac Hanshaw of Suffolk; 13 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. WINTERVILLE -- Ada Gould Manning McLawhorn, 86, of the 5100 block of Reedy Branch Road, died Jan. 15, 2002 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Alfred McLawhorn. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Manning of Greenville. She is survived by three sons, Dan S. McLawhorn and wife, Janet of Chesapeake, Michael A. McLawhorn and wife, Mary Beth of Elm City, N.C., and Ryan K. Mrs. McLawhorn was a member of Winterville Baptist Church for more than 50 years where she was a member of the Philathea Class. GATES -- Hazel Matthews Parker, 89, of the NC Hwy. 37, died Jan. 15, 2002, in Nansemond Pointe Convalescent Center, Suffolk. Mrs. Parker was born in Gates County and was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary Donnie Smith Matthews. She was a homemaker and was a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church. A native of Farmville, N.C., she was the widow of William Earl Tyson Sr. At age 14, she was baptized and joined Friendship Baptist Church in Farmville. She was last a member of Emmaus Baptist Church, Chesapeake. Survivors include a daughter, Faye T. Brough and husband Dr. James W. Brough of Newport News; a son, William E. Tyson Jr. of North Hollywood, Calif.; a sister, Captola Owens of Macclesfield, N.C.; two grandchildren, Robert N. Smith and wife Beth and Barbara Weiss; five great-grandchildren, Nathan Hudson, Kyle Weiss, J. Robert Smith and wife Brandi, Christopher Smith and Crystal Smith; a great-great-grandchild, Joseph Ryan Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. RICHMOND -- Fred Thomas Laughon Jr. died Jan. 14, 2002, in Richmond. He is survived by his wife, Helen Martin Laughon; a son, Fred Thomas Laughon III and wife Vivi Bergh Laughon of Tallahassee, Fla.; a daughter, Neville E. Laughon of Richmond; two granddaughters, Tovi Laughon Heffron and husband Christopher Keys Heffron and Lissi Laughon Rabon and husband A. Tyler Rabon; three great-grandchildren, Thomas Keys Heffron, Patrick Christopher Heffron and Fisher Martin Heffron. Born in Johnson City, Tenn., April 25, 1915, he was educated in the public schools of Portsmouth and graduated from the University of Richmond and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., Th.M. He was honored by the University of Richmond with a DD degree and Stetson University of Deland, Fla., with a DD degree. He was an honorary member of Florida Blue Key and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was chaplain at the Florida House of Representatives. He served the Baptist denomination as a member of the Virginia State Foreign Board, Board of Trustees Baptist Foundation, S.C. State Mission Board of Florida, member and president of Radio and Television Commission, Southern Baptist Convention. He served seven pastorates: Gwathmey Baptist Church, Ashland, Va., Second Baptist Church, Richmond, Va., Carlyle Avenue Baptist Church, Louisville, Ky., pastor of First Baptist Church, Front Royal, Va., 1942-1947; pastor of Talbot Park Baptist Church, Norfolk, 1947-1953; pastor, First Baptist Church, Orangeburg, S.C.; pastor, First Baptist Church, Gainesville, Fla., 1957-1972; special assistant to Radio and Television Commission as a liaison with the Foreign Mission Board in Richmond, 1972-1978. He was invited to supply in many pulpits; banquet speaker for business and professional events. He spoke for Rotary Conventions in the United States and England. Since 1978 he had been self-employed. In his woodworking shop he reproduced 18th and 19th century salesman's sample furniture and wooden dolls. His reproductions are sold in Williamsburg as well as to doll collectors all over the world. When the Laughons moved to Richmond, they moved and restored an 18th Century home, "Cheswick," located on Franklin Farms on Three Chopt Road. The services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Cannon Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Richmond. No flowers please, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- John A. Ward, 81, died Dec. 31, 2001. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., he went to St. Petersburg in 1986 from Norfolk. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a salesman in the automotive industry. Survivors include four daughters and five sons.
