Mr. James B. Cannon, age 70, died, Saturday, October 1, 2005, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Roberta Tuggle Cannon, a daughter, Eva Sue Cannon and a brother, Bobby Joe Cannon. He is survived by; Two sons, Billy Cannon and wife, Mary , Allen Cannon and wife, Tammy all of Glade Spring; His stepmother, Thelma Cannon of Abingdon; Five brothers, Lemual Cannon of Glade Spring; Wayne Cannon, David Cannon, Charlie Cannon and Tim Cannon all of Meadowview; Five sisters, Ollie Thomas and Phyllis Jessee both of Glade Spring, Rosie Salyers of Alvarado, Linda Steffey of Abingdon, Brenda Caywood of Meadowview; A granddaughter, Tanika Cannon of Glade Spring; Several nieces and nephews A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, October 4, 2005, at 1:00 PM in the Baptist Cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Poston and Rev. Curtis Duff officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 PM Monday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be Wade Louthian, Jr., David Louthian, Rick Tuggle, Darrell Louthian, Gary Louthian and King Terry. Honorary pallbearers will be Junior Heath and Michael Estep. Family and friends are to meet at the cemetery before the service on Monday.

Ted Ballard Miller
Ted Ballard Miller, age 41, died Saturday, October 1, 2005, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He had lived most of his life in Washington County, Virginia and was of the Holiness faith. He is survived by His wife, Norma Fields Miller; His parents, Ballard and Peggy Miller of Abingdon; A sister, Frances Marie Cook and husband, David of Lebanon, Va.; A niece, Tiffany Cook; Several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, October 4, 2005, at 3:00 PM in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Brother Bob Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends anytime at the home of Ballard and Peggy Miller, 205 Ruth Street, Abingdon or friends may stop by the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service to sign the register book. Pallbearers will be Rev. Paul Price, Randy Burke, Robert Burke, David Cook, Albert Reynolds, Moses Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers will be Mack Clifton and Dr. James Mann. Family and friends may meet at the funeral home by 2:40 PM Tuesday for a procession to the cemetery.

Carolyn Kelly Boone
Carolyn Rives Kelly Boone, 83, of Abingdon, Virginia passed away at Johnston Memorial Hospital on Sunday morning, October 2, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Boone and parents, Katie Rives Carlock Kelly and John B. Kelly of Glade Spring. A lifelong resident of Southwest Virginia, Mrs. Boone was a public school music teacher for 20+ years in Abingdon, Saltville and Pocahontas VA and continued to teach hundreds of students private piano in her home until her 80th birthday. Mrs. Boone was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter Nancy Rives Boone Allsbrook and son-in-law Lee Allsbrook of Monteagle, Tennessee, son, Buckey Boone and daughter-in-law, Joan Boone of Abingdon, son Michael Kelly Boone and son-in-law David Steffen of New York City, NY and daughter, Rebecca Ann Boone of Abingdon. She is also survived by four grandchildren; Birdie Boone, Wendy Allsbrook Javier, Katie Boone and Christopher Steffen Boone. Also surviving are two brothers; William C. Kelly and sister-in-law Eva Kelly of Chilhowie and brother, Johnny Kelly of Glade Spring. Words cannot express the love and many kindnesses shown by her five caregivers, Edna Kidwell, Mary Adams, Mary Weems, Melissa Barr and Nalatha Dhas. Their care and attention will never be forgotten and the family is eternally grateful. The family will receive friends for visitation at her home at 191 Fairway Drive from 6:00-9:00 on Tuesday, October 4. A Graveside Service will be held at the Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 5. Velma Widener Powers
Mrs. Velma Widener Powers died Monday, October 3, in Mt. Pleasant, SC. She was born in Pocahontas, VA and lived in Abingdon from 1947 until May, 2004 when she and her husband, Wayne Powers moved to 1224 Village Creek Lane, Apt. S-5, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Abingdon and a former Sunday School teacher. Some of her former activities included: Cub Scout leader. Book Lovers Club, Art Club, Mattie Rountree Woman's Club and volunteer hostess at the Art Depot as well as volunteer at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Wayne Powers; daughter, Elaine (Kitti) Mullins & her husband, Mike of Mt Pleasant, SC; son, Roger Powers & his wife, Ronna of Dallas, TX; three grandchildren, Brooks Goode of Vienna, V A; Stacy Gray & her husband, David of Charleston, SC; Amy Steele & her husband, David of Columbia, SC and 5 great grandchildren (Erica Gray, Brandon Gray, Powers Gray, Kennedy Goode & Morgan Steele). Sister, Eleanor Sheffey and husband, Bob of Abingdon, VA, brother, Cecil Widener and wife, Margaret of New Orleans, LA. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M., Thursday, October 6, 2005 in St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Kent Peterson officiating. Lona Faye Price
Mrs. Lona Faye Graybeal Price, age 90, passed away Monday, October 3, 2005, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. Born in Washington County, Virginia, on February 9, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mamie Graybeal. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roosevelt Price; three sons, Claude, Raymond and Wayne Price; and two daughters, Laura Norris and Eva Jones. She was a member of Revival Center Baptist Church. Survivors include five daughters: Hazel Pope and husband Henson, Abingdon; Stella Wise and husband Dallas, Jr., Abingdon; Ruby Pope and husband Sheridan, Bristol, VA; Julia DeBord, Bristol, VA; and Lois Heath and husband Ben, Bristol, VA. She is also survived by three sons, Henry Price and wife Zola, Abingdon; Hubert Price, Abingdon; and Paul Price and wife Vickie, Abingdon. Two sisters, Ruth Bailey and Bertha Wise, both of Abingdon, and one brother, Garland Graybeal of Abingdon also survive. Mrs. Price is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Price will be held Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. at Revival Center Baptist Church, Benhams Road, Bristol, VA, with Rev. Lyons Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Spoon Gap Road, Abingdon. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Ashley Lane White
Ashley Lane White, age 19, passed away October 2, 2005 in Johnson City Medical Center. Ashley was born January 13, 1986 in Abingdon, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Frank White and Grandmother Patrica Profitt. Ashley is survived by her mother Reba Profitt and dad Stephen Profitt of Abingdon; one brother Steven White of Abingdon, a sister Mary Beth Profitt of Abingdon. Grandparents Donald and Joyce Brown of Abingdon, Martha White of Abingdon, Preston Profitt of Abingdon. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Funeral services for Ashley will be held Thursday October 6, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. Paul Ketron officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Garnett Marcellous Anderson
Garnett Marcellous Anderson, age 48, died Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Garnett was born on March 11, 1957 in Radford, VA, and was preceded in death by his father Edward R. Anderson, Jr. He was a U. S. Army Veteran and of the Baptist faith. Garnett was an accomplished guitar player and vocalist and very much enjoyed his gift of music. Survivors include his mother, Eugenia Anderson of Randallstown, MD; a sister, Vicky Anderson also of Randallstown, MD; four brothers, Tim Anderson of Abingdon, Melvin Anderson of Glade Spring, VA, Charles 'Chip' Anderson of Roanoke, VA and Vincent Anderson of Abingdon; a sister-in-law Mary Anderson. Also surviving are three aunts, three uncles and many special cousins, nieces and nephews as well as friends. The funeral service for Garnett Anderson will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 8, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. William Weldon and Rev. Robert Dix officiating. Interment will follow in High Point Cemetery. Jackie Filmore Cuddy
Mr. Jackie Filmore Cuddy, age 63, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005 in the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN. Jackie was born on August 9, 1942 in Saltville, VA and was a son of the late Millard Cuddy and Lucille Blackwell Cuddy. He was a member of the Cross United Methodist Church and was an employee of Team Air Distributing, Inc. Jackie was a member of the RESES Organization ( Refrigeration Service Electrical Institute). Survivors include his wife Anne Sandefur Cuddy; two sons, Jeffrey Cuddy and wife Ginger of Colonial Heights, TN and Jerry Cuddy and wife Mary of Bluff City, TN; three grandchildren, Lexy Cuddy, Cody Cuddy and Jessica Frazier; two brothers, Billy Cuddy and wife Sue of Saltville and Bobby Cuddy of Meadowview, VA; a sister Patsy Smith of Saltville and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Jackie Filmore Cuddy will be conducted at 8:00 P.M., Friday, October 7, 2005 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens at 19415 Lee Highway in Abingdon) with Rev. Kevin Holmes officiating. Interment and committal service will be at 11:00 A. M. Saturday, October 8, 2005 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Ellen Denton
Mrs. Ellen 'Jackie' Denton, age 76, passed away, Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born and lived in Clinchburg, Virginia until 1957 when she moved to Dundalk, Maryland where she lived for 30 years before moving to Bristol 18 years ago. She was a member of the Hunt Memorial United Methodist Church and the Dundalk Group of Alanon. She was a retired employee of Westinghouse having worked 22 years. Ellen was preceded in death by a son, Lacy 'Frankie' Denton, Jr. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Lacy F. Denton; her son, Herbert A. Denton and wife Kathy of Bel Air, Md.; four grandchildren, Christopher Denton of Bristol, Becky Holter of Baltimore, Md., Tony Denton and Shannon Denton, both of Bel Air, Md.; four great grandchildren, Sydney Holter and Seth Holter both of Balitmore, Md, Jake Denton and Lauren Denton of Bristol. A service will be conducted Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Jack Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 PM Friday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Phillip Lee Offield
Phillip Lee Offield, age 25, died Monday, October 3, 2005 in Abingdon. He was born in Roanoke, Virginia and had lived in Meadowview for the last 14 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Sue Offield. He is survived by his father, Ralph Offield of Meadowview, Va.; two brothers, Brandon Offield of Bristol, Tenn. and Randy Offield of Meadowview, Va.; his paternal grandmother, Bonnie Offield of Meadowview, Va. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, October 9, 2005, at 4:00 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Linkous M. Street
Linkous M. Street, age 86 of Abingdon, Virginia passed away October 6, 2005 at his home. Linkous was born July 19, 1919 in Buchanan County, Virginia and was a son of the late John and Louise Jackson Street. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. Linkous was preceded in death by his parents; one son James Street; one daughter Betty Jo Street; three step-children Rufus (Buck) Rowe, Sue Loflin, and Joan Keen. Survivors include his wife Maudie Street; one son Jerry Street and special friend Glennis Stinson of Tazewell, Virginia; one daughter Wanda Owens of Honaker, Virginia; step-children Harold Rowe and wife Lilo of Bristol, Tennessee; Denny Rowe and wife Barbara of Abingdon, Virginia; and Gay Rowe also of Abingdon. Ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, fifteen step-grandchildren and twenty-eight step-great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral service for Mr. Street will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 9, 2005 at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Ronnie Matney officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday October 8, 2005 from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel. Saraphine Mildred Carter, age 88, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2005 in Grace Health Care of Abingdon. She was the daughter of the late John and Daisy Carter of Meadowview, VA and was the oldest member of the A.M.E. Zion Church, Meadowview, VA. She was a member of the Glade Spring and Clinchburg, VA Senior Citizens. She has left a devoted sister and companion, Naomi C. Lindsey, Meadowview, VA, two sisters-in-law, Mary Carter, Meadowview, VA and Lillie B. Carter, Glade Spring, VA, 15 nieces and nephews, 30 great nieces and nephews, special friends, Mrs. Carrie Trent, Glade Spring, VA and Mr. George Fullen, Abingdon, VA. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, October 9, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Meadowview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Paul Montgomery, Ronnie Montgomery, John Smith, Rev. Billy Fullen, Rudolph Fullen, Enos Fullen. Paul J. Cross
Paul J. Cross, age 79 passed away October 6, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Paul was born November 21, 1925 in Russell County, Virginia, and had lived most of his life in Bristol, Tennessee. He was a son of the late Carl and Bessie Adams Cross. Paul had worked with Burlington Industries formerly of Bristol for 42 years. He was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, and one daughter Paulette Cross Dorton, and one grandson Brian Dorton. Paul is survived by a sister Dorothy Blevins and husband Howard of Bristol, Va., one son-in-law Robert Dorton of Castlewood, Virginia; grandson David Dorton of Bristol, Virginia and granddaughter Tamara Witt and husband Doug of Abingdon, Virginia. Great-Grandchildren Blake Witt, Morgan Witt, Jacob Armstrong, Samantha Dorton, and Cassandra Dorton. One niece Beth Painter and husband Steve of Blountville, Tennessee and one great niece Nichole Painter also of Blountville. The Funeral service will be conducted on Saturday October 8, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Bob Jones officiating. The committal service will be held Sunday October 9, 2005 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens at 4:00 p.m. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery. Marvin Hill
Mr. Marvin Hill age 80 passed away Saturday, October 8, 2005 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born February 10, 1925 in Dickenson County, Virginia to Draten and Ella Willis Hill. Marvin was a retired coal miner and member of the United Mine Workers Local#1509. He was a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, Kermit, Paul, Jimmy Darrell, Mack, Auty, Corbett and Finas; three sisters, Rose Deel, Carsie Deel and Dorothy Picklesimer; and a daughter, Debra Kay Hill. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sylvia Hill, one son, Jeffrey Charles Hill of Abingdon, VA and his sons, Eric Landon Hill of Fort Worth, TX and Charles Jason Hill of Jacksonville, Florida, two daughters, Peggy Keen and husband, Harry of Flint, Michigan and their daughters, Angela Lynn Matheus of Noblesville, Indiana and Catherine Elizabeth Stewart of Dublin, Ohio, Wanda Deel and husband, Gary, Claypool Hill, VA and their daughter, Amy Kristen Adams of Marion, VA, eight great grandchildren, Alex James Stewart of Dublin, Ohio, Morgan Dawn Hill and Aaron Landon Hill both of California, Meridith Claire Stewart of Dublin, Ohio, Hannah Jillian Adams of Marion, VA, Cole Bennette Mathues of Noblesville, Indiana, Olivia Faith Hill of Texas and Grant Logan Adams of Marion, VA, one brother, Earl Hill of Haysi, VA, two sisters, Mary Round of Belleville, Michigan and Mae Bowman of Big Stone Gap, VA, several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, October 10, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Evangelist Michael Trent, Evangelist Michael McCoy and Mr. Richard Gaminde, Minister, officiating. Elmer John Goedert, Jr.
Elmer John 'Jack' Goedert, Jr, age 80, passed away at his home in Fort Walton Beach, FL on Sunday, October 2, 2005. Born on March 1, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jack was a son of the late Elmer John Goedert, Sr. and Bertha Clay Goedert. Jack grew up in Minnesota after his family moved there when he was very young. He served his country in the Marine Corps during WW II. After the war, he spent some time on the west coast and learned to drive 'big rigs' and continued to drive trucks for several years. He later worked at the David Taylor Model Basin in Virginia and later as a correctional officer at the Justice Department from which he later retired. Jack had many interests including music, playing the organ, driving and camping out in his RV and buying new computer gadgets. He liked to follow the investment markets and trying out new investment philosophies. He loved boats, especially sailboats. He dearly loved his poodles Josette and Misty. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette and his step-daughter Sarah Tomlinson Adkins. He is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, 'Joey'; his beloved toy poodle, Misty Rose; his four children; daughters, Vickie (Butch) Gast of Bowie, MD and Shari Bartlett of Augusta, GA; sons, Jerry (Sam) Goedert of Huntersville, NC and Elmer John Goedert III of Augusta; twelve grandchildren; step-son, Robert Tomlinson (Denise) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and four step-grandsons. The funeral Service for Elmer John 'Jack' Goedert, JR will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 12, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon. Entombment will follow the service in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Knollkreg Memorial Park. James Salyers
James Salyers, age 78, went to be with the Lord October 11 at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a long illness. James was born September 18, 1927 in Dante, Virginia, son of the late Henry and Laughlin Keith Salyer. James served in the United States Navy from 1945-1946 and with the United States Army from 1947-1969. His service included World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, and the Cold War. James is a life member of the Disabled American Veterans James E. Peters Post 57 of Abingdon and a member of Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975 of Bristol, Virginia, and the American Legion Post #0012. He was also a member of Bethel Independent Baptist Church of Abingdon. James is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Henry Salyer, Jr., Howard Salyer, Leon Clayton Salyer, and William Salyer.; and one sister Juanita Hornick. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth R. (Betty) Salyers; two daughters Elizabeth Ann Lewis and husband James Martin Lewis of Glade Spring, Virginia, and Victoria Ann Salyers of Abingdon. Also surviving are two sisters, Violet Simmons and Thelma Edrelin both of California; grandchildren Dakota Scott Hale, Michael Shannon Taylor, Jr., Ector James Taylor, James Lewis, and Autumn Lewis; special nieces Victoria Hornick of Bristol, Tennessee and Donna Brown of Hesperia, California. Hermine Lechner Willis
Ms. Hermine Lechner Willis, age 79, died Tuesday, October 12, 2005 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. She was born on July 3, 1926 in Vienna, Austria and was a daughter of the late Leopold Lechner and Katharine Pollach Lechner. She immigrated to the United States in 1943 and became a United States Citizen in 1953. She made her home in Haysi, Virginia when she she first immigrated to the United States. Hermie moved to Abingdon in the late 1980's and had lived here until her death. She was a member of the Splash Dam Freewill Baptist Church in Haysi. She attended the Jackson Memorial Independent Baptist Church in Bristol. She is survived by two sons: Carl Barton of Somersville, SC, Kellis Barton and wife Barbara of Haysi; two step-sons, Phillip Willis of Haysi and Thurston Willis of Michigan; a step-daughter, Irene Willis of Haysi; her dear friends whom she affectionately referred to as her 'Abingdon children', Jill Smeltzer and Robin Smeltzer both of Abingdon; a sister, Mitzi Picher' of Vienna, Austria; her grandchildren, Lisa Fuller and husband Dwight of Haysi; Roger Lee Barton and Kenneth Lee Barton and wife Tina both of Somersville, SC; three great grandchildren, Zachary Fuller, Dylan Fuller and Roger Lee Barton, JR.; Several step-great grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Saturday in the Splash Dam Free Will Baptist Church in Haysi, VA with Rev. Danny Sluss officiating. John Thomas Hamilton
John Thomas Hamilton died Sunday, October 16, 2005. A native of Newport News, VA, he had been a resident of Glade Spring since 1979. He was born on April 1, 1922. John was preceded in death by his parents Norman P. Hamilton and Miriam Sims Hamilton; a sister, Barbara H. Hart and a brother, David R. Hamilton. John was a graduate of Virginia Tech and was employed as a cost engineer in the ship building industry for over thirty years. He was a member of Byars-Cobb United Mehtodist Church and had served on various committees at the church over the years. John was a U. S. Army Veteran of WW II. He served in the Eastern Theatre of Operations where he was a tail gunner on the Flying Fortress B-17 aircraft. He flew in the 360th Bomb Group of the 367th Bombardment Squadron with a total of 32 missions over Germany. John was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Medal. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Thomas Hamilton; a sister, Sarah C. Hamilton of Bainbridge Island, WA; his extended family, Lloyd O. Thomas of Hastings, NE; June and Jack Ryburn of Abingdon; Kenneth (Bob) and Barbara Thomas of Salem and Carolyn King of Abingdon. Johnny F. Compton
Mr. Johnny F. Compton, age 61, passed away Tuesday, October 18,2005, at his home after a brief struggle with cancer. John was born August 28, 1944 in Murphy, Virginia to Nora Fletcher. He was a graduate of Council High School in Council and attended the University of Virginia at Wise. He retired from Potomac Electric Power in Washington DC in 2000 after 35 years of employment. John loved the outdoors, especially fishing and just walking trails with family and friends. One thing he greatly enjoyed was to teach children to love and appreciate nature as he did. John was baptized at the Grundy United Methodist Church in 1964 and had been a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church for the last four years. He is survived by: his wife of 41 years, Joe Ann Perkins Compton; a son, J. Scott Compton of Lorton, Va.; a daughter, Victoria (Vicky) A. Nellie Ray Dorsey Wright
Dr. Nellie Ray Dorsey Wright, 73 passed away October 23, 2005 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Dr. Wright was born in Richwood, West Virginia, and is a daughter of the late Raymond E. and Mertie Mae Huffman Dorsey. She was a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology. She attended the West Virginia University studying pre-med and received her Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Wright interned at MCV and did a two year residency in pediatrics. From MCV she came to Southwest Virginia and established herself in Wise County with the Department of Public Health. From there she came to Bristol, Virginia and founded The Child Development Center which served all of Southwest Virginia. She completed her working years in public health. Through their helping foreign exchange students in the United States complete their education, Dr. Wright and her husband traveled throughout much of the world to visit some of the students. She was a member of the 'Thursday Evening Supper Club' which she had enjoyed for over thirty years. Dr. Wright belonged to three historical groups due to her love of history, was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and the Circle One of the Presbyterian Women that she loved very much. Dr. Wright was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother David Andrew Dorsey and a nephew Henry Steven Russell. Dr. Wright is survived by her husband Haynes J. J. Wright, two sons David Haynes Wright of Adelaide, Australia and John McEwen Wright of Charleston, South Carolina. Two granddaughters Eleanor (Ellie) Wright and Abigail (Abby) Wright. One sister Helen Russell of Craigsville, West Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church at 3:00 P.M. with the Rev. Robert Tolar officiating. Roy Lee Neeves
Roy Lee Neeves, age 77, went home to be with the Lord, 30 October 2005 after a short, valiant battle with lung cancer. He was born in Glade Spring and had resided in Bristol since 1951. Mr. Neeves retired from the United Intermountain (Sprint) Telephone Company in 1983 after 35 years of service. Mr. Neeves served his country in the United States Navy, was a Director of Christian News and Comments, was active in the Masonic Lodge for nearly 50 years in several leadership positions including Worshipful Master of York Lodge. He was a member of the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church for 50 years serving as a deacon and elder as well as on several presbytery committees. He was a proud grandfather and the number one fan of his three grandsons. As patriarch of his family, he was a man of value and a wise leader in the community. Mr. Neeves was preceded in death by his parents, William Harrison Neeves and Willie Lydia Frazier Dolinger Neeves, three brothers (Hendricks Trenor Neeves, James Robert Neeves and an infant brother John Gibson Neeves), and sisters (Isabelle Katherine Neeves Kidd, Callie Elizabeth Neeves Osborne, Nannie Farris Neeves Riffey, Annie Francis Neeves Rupard, Sarah Josephine Neeves Sage and Betty Jane Neeves). Mr. Neeves is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Verna Mae Calhoun Neeves, a son and daughter-in-law, Ted Harrison Neeves and Livia Neeves of Kingsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Myra Lynn Campbell and James Howard 'Hal' Campbell, and three grandchildren, William Hal Campbell, Johnathan Roy Campbell and Patrick Neeves Campbell all of Rich Valley, VA; a sister, Dorothy Evelyn Neeves Norris of Abingdon, VA, a brother and sister-in-law, William MacDonald Neeves and Roberta Neeves of Myrtle Beach, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth Neff Wilson
Mrs. Ruth Neff Wilson, age 93, passed away, Sunday, October 30, 2005, at her home. She had lived most of her life in Washington County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Thomas William and Lula Heldreth Neff. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church where she had taught Sunday School for over 40 years. She was a former elementary school teacher having taught 32 years with most of them teaching first and second graders at Liberty Hall. Ruth was a volunteer with the Senior Citizens Center where she was a senior aerobics class instructor until March 2005 and had been awarded as volunteer of the year. She was a past member of the B & P W, the Homemakers Club and was the treasurer of the UDC. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Luke Woodrow Wilson (a World War II veteran) and a brother, T. W. Neff, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Karol Wilson Gray and husband, Bobby Charles Gray of Abingdon, Va.; three grandsons, Dr. Jeffrey Alan Gray and wife, Melissa Scott Gray of Lexington, Ky. who are expecting her first great grandchild, Travis Wilson Gray of Abingdon, Va. and Adam Charles Gray of Richmond, Va.; also, nieces and nephews. Mack Long
Mack Long, age 68 passed away October 31, 2005 in Bristol Regional Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Mack was born November 10, 1937 in Washington County, Virginia. He was a son of the late Clifford and Mary Sue Hoss Long. Mack was a lifelong and well known resident, and farmer of the Black Hollow community, and was well loved by all that knew him. He was a child of God, and put the Lord first in his life. Mack is preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter and two brothers Jimmy Long and Ralph Long. Mack is survived by his wife of 45 years Saundra Combs Long, three sisters; Katherine Goodson and husband Herman, Garrnett Bott and husband Dub all of Bristol, Virginia, Violet Cunningham and husband Roger of Abingdon. Four brothers; Gene and wife Rosemarie Long, Marvin Long and Shirley, Kenneth Long and wife Eileen all of Abingdon. Lonnie Long and wife Dianna of Piney Flats, Tennessee. Four sister-in-laws Effie Long, Edith Long, Dolores Combs, and Janie Saturnino. One uncle Hughes Hoss. Twenty nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jerry Eggers, Rev. Bob Spears, and Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be Herman Goodson, Roger Cunningham, Dub Bott, Dennis Rhea, Allen Rhea, Mickey Rhea, Mark Spears, Kevin Ketchum, Bob Fletcher, Roger Phipps, Jack Attwell, Rob Rhea, and Glenn Anderson.

Helen Rider Ashworth
Mrs. Helen Rider Ashworth, age 96, died on October 30, 2005 at her home in Easton, MD. Mrs. Ashworth was born on March 3, 1909 in Roanoke, VA and was a daughter of the late Gratton C. Rider and Mary Soyer Rider. She graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in Roanoke and then attended business school. Her son, John W. Ashworth, III resides in St. Michaels, MD and her daughter, Judy Ashworth Derringer resides in Kennedyville, MD. Mrs. Ashworth is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. In 1933, Helen married John William (Bill) Ashworth Jr. in Coeburn, VA where they met when she was 17 (1926) and they were together for 75 years until his death on October 31, 2001. Their only long term separation was during WW II when Bill served in the Pacific Theatre for 2 years. While Bill Attended the University of Virginia Medical School between 1931 - 1935, she remained in Roanoke working in an accounting firm In 1933, they moved to Baltimore, MD where he completed his surgical residency at Church Home Hospital. As Dr. Ashworth developed his surgical practice in Baltimore, Helen volunteered extensively with St. Joseph Hospital and the Maryland Medical Society, committing her time and energy to advancing the health care services and initiatives associated with those organizations while raising her family and supporting Dr. Ashworth in the development of his practice. In 1972, they returned to their roots, moving to Emory, Virginia where Dr. Ashworth had attended Emory and Henry College as an undergraduate, moving into the home that his sister Edith and her husband 'Little Doc' Hillman built. Both of them had a desire to return to the community that had given them the foundation for their success and to give back to that community. They spent 28 wonderful years in Emory, where Dr. Ashworth continued his medical practice until 1995. Helen became a 'fixture' in the Emory community, once again volunteering her time in several life venues including Johnston Memorial Hospital and the Washington County Library in Abingdon, the Washington County Historical Society, Emory & Henry College in Emory and the community club. She became an expert 'needle worker and spent long hours pursuing the genealogy of both the Ashworth and Rider families - all of this while, again, supporting Dr. Ashworth with his medical practice and maintaining a home that was continually occupied with their friends from Emory and across the country. They moved to Easton, Maryland in December of 2000 to be near their son and daughter. Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Rider Ashworth will be held at 4 PM Friday, November 4, 2005 at the Emory United Methodist Church, on the campus of Emory and Henry College, with the Rev. Beverly Robinette officiating. Burial will follow in the Holston Conference Emory and Henry Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jack Cox, Charlie Quillan, Gary Crookshank, George Roberts and Dirk Moore. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Ashworth-Hillman Scholarship Fund at E & H College, P. O. Box 950, Emory, VA 24327. There will be no visitation at the funeral home; however, the family will gather in the parlor of Emory United Methodist Church prior to the service.
