Vernell Hughes Trent
Vernell Hughes Trent, 89, of Bristol Virginia, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Green Bay, Wis. She was born in St. Paul, Va., a daughter of the late Dormas and Carrie Sullivan Hughes.
She was a member of Stallard Memorial Free Will Baptist Church and Eastern Star 152 of St. Paul and moved to the Bristol area in 1980. Mrs. Trent spent many weekends at the Southwest Flea Market in Abingdon. She was an avid gardener, antique collector and quilter. Mrs. Trent loved her family and prepared many wonderful meals. She was the widow of Willard Arvin Trent.
She is survived by four grandchildren, Patricia Zeimer and her husband Michael of Green Bay, Vicki Parsons and her husband Steve of Abingdon, Frederick Trent and his wife Stephanie of Chicago and Mike Trent of Kingsport; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Trent was also preceded in death by two sons, David Neil and Fred Lawrence Trent; one sister; and three brothers.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the chapel of Blevins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and again from 6-8 Saturday evening at Blevins Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent via email to condolences@blevinsfuneralhome.com.

Claude G. Woods
BLUFF CITY - Claude G. Woods, 68, of 630 Woods Road, passed away on Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Z.W. and Hassie Sams Woods and was a lifelong resident of the Bluff City area. He was a retired welder and plumber and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Woods.
Survivors include wife, Mary Katie Woods; daughters, Linda and husband Richard Dunbar, Crissie and husband Dean Ray, April and husband Joe Tester and Kathy Brummitt; sons, Charles Woods and wife Ann, Johnny Woods and wife Judy and Travis Woods; brother, J.B. Woods of Elizabethton; sisters, Betty Maines of Bluff City, Judy Pierce of Morristown and Frances Fleenor of Johnson City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ernie Depew officiating. Committal services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sunrise Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers include Sam Blevins, Wayne Manning, Larry Simpson, Michael Grindstaff, Brandon Woods and Justin Ray. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home.

Douglas Royal Ball
TOLEDO, Ohio - Graveside services for Douglas Royal Ball will be held at Ball Cemetery in the Finney section of Russell County Nov. 21, 2002, with Rev. Archie Morgan officiating.
Mr. Ball died Oct. 6, 2002, im a Toledo nursing home.
Flowers may be sent to Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker, Va.

Grace Ella Black
BLUFF CITY - Grace Ella Black, 71, of 623 Cedar Street Extension, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late Bill and Minnie Hampton Delaney. She was a housewife and a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She was a member of Robinson A.M.E. Zion Church in Bluff City.
Survivors include husband of 37 years, Wesley W. Black Sr.; son,Wesley W. Black Jr. and daughter-in-law, Joy Scott of Bristol Tennessee; sisters, Alease Madison of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Lucy Wells of Bristol Tennessee; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Robinson A.M.E. Zion Church with Rev. W.J. Reid and Rev. John J. Mensah officiating. Interment will follow at Morning View Cemetery. Pallbearers include friends of the family. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

Ida M. Burton
RICHLANDS - Funeral services for Mrs. Ida M. Burton will be conducted Saturday, Nov.16, at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Donald McClure, the Pastor of the Ridgeview Baptist Church at Stuarts Draft, Va., officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Don Vandyke, Claude Barrett, Clyde Barrett, Louis Hunter, Dr. Tommy Bays and Joe McGlothlin.
Honorary pallbearers: Ken Wysor, Dr. Richard Bower, Dr. James McVey, Dr. Ed Moore, Homer Vencill, Bev Honaker, Bill McCall Jr. and Ernest Roisch.
Mrs. Burton, age 102, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at a Tazewell hospital.

James R. Finney Jr.
James R. Finney Jr., 79, of 807 Airport Road, Bristol, Va., died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Harr, 94, formerly of 1329 Harrtown Road, went to be with his Lord Nov. 13, 2002, at Indian Path Hospital following a brief illness.

Gary Joe Horne
CEDAR BLUFF - Mr. Gary Joe Horne, 39, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of James Alfred and Ruth Evelyn Jamison Horne of Cedar Bluff. He was a 1981 graduate of Richlands Tabernacle and a member of the Richlands Tabernacle. He was manager of Southwest Supply for 21 years.
He was preceded in daeth by paternal grandparents, Maze and Nannie Horne; and maternal grandparents, Herman and Hattie Jamison.
He is survived by his wife, Denise (Chris) Hylton Horne; two sons, Ethan Horne and Jordan Horne of the home; parents, James and Ruth Horne of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Mrs. Stephen (Teresa) Coleman and Mrs. Kevin (Kristie) McGlothlin, all of Cedar Bluff; nieces and nephews, Tyler McGlothlin, Todd McGlothlin, Whitney Coleman, Maegan Coleman, Bryan Boyd, and special niece, Sonyea Boyd.
Special thanks to Southwest Supply, ClinchValley Medical Center nurses, Dr. M.V. Pillai, University of Va. nurses and Dr. Hess, "Chris's" family for prayers, support, financial support and "all prayers from all churches and all offerings."
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at the Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands with Brother Ralph Horton and Brother Bob Osborne officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Mark Daily, Joe Sheppard, Dale Childress, Bryan Boyd, Mike Harman and Marvin Lowe. Richard W. Lavinder
DURHAM, N.C. - Richard W. Lavinder died on Nov. 10 at his home, 1910 Ruffin St. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1948, after which he attended the University of Tennessee. He was a native of Abingdon and a longtime resident of Durham. A private ceremony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Raleigh Memorial Cemetery.

Annie M. Lowe
CLOVIS, N.M. - Mrs. Annie M. Lowe, 83, formerly of Bandy, Va., passed away Nov. 14, 2002, in New Mexico following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Tazewell County and was the daughter of the late Riley and Rosa Strouth Smith, both Tazewell County natives.
She had made her home in the Bandy area most of her life prior to moving to New Mexico in 1993. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie "Bill" Lowe; one son, Dale Lowe; and two brothers.
Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Fern Hankins of Clovis; three sisters, Flo Smith of Bandy, Lucy Jewell of Bandy and Lena Ramey of Cedar Bluff; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Rick Hankins officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Richard Lowe, Donnie Lowe, Tommy Lowe; Gene Jewell, Link Smith and Mike Hankins.
Friends may call Sunday evening after 6 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands. The family can be contacted at the home of Link Smith in Baptist Valley, which was Bill and Annie's old home place.

Susan T. McClain
POWHATAN, Va. - Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Kay Thompson McClain will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Clyde Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in the Thompson Cemetery on Big A Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Thompson, Jason Davis, Doug Schwartz, Wesley Lusby, Charles LaPort and Jack Thompson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Clinton Thompson, Rodney Boyd and Mike Honaker.
Mrs. McClain, 51, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at her home.

Ethel McFall
POUND - Ethel Cantrell McFall, 84, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center after a short illness.
She was born in Wise County, Va., on July 31, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Milum Cantrell and Caldona Stanley Cantrell. She was previously employed as a sales clerk at United Discount. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Mrs. McFall was of the Baptist faith and attended Ralph Potter Memorial Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude "Nod" McFall (Feb. 22, 1986); sisters, Pearlie Hamilton, Ella Boggs, Gracie Mullins and Stella Cantrell; and brother, Orby L. Cantrell.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Freddie Short, Pound; sons and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Susanne McFall, Pound, and Phil McFall, Weber City, Va.; sisters and brother-in-law, Elsie Taylor, Pound, Lorraine and Ocie Dale, Ocala, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Ezra and Evelyn Cantrell, Pound; brother-in-law, Edgar Mullins, Pound; grandchildren, Bobby and Kim McFall, Kim and John Hawkins, Scott McFall, Jefferson McFall, Stelphen Short, Terry Short, Heather and Paul Wilson, Brandon Short; great-granedchildren, Kayla McFall, Tyler McFall, Audrey Mullins, Channing Short, Austin Short, Ethan Short; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, and any time at the residence of the daughter, Anita Short, and son, Bobby McFall.
Friends may call any time after 6 p.m. Saturday at Carty Funeral Home, Norton-Wise. A song service will be held at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at Carty Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Clyde Roop officiating. Gospel Aires will provide the music.
Burial will be at the Family Cemetery, Bean Gap Road, Pound. Grandsons, great-grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Colonial Funeral Home and Southwest Virginia Funeral Directors.

HONAKER - Funeral services for Mr. Guy Arnold Miller will be conducted at noon Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Carl Robinson and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va.
Pallbearers will be Wilbur Miller, Gary Miller, Bill Miller, Gary Owens, Jerry Price, Miles Yates, Carl Richardson and Lowie Perkins.
Mr. Miller, 85, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at his home.

Berton L. Monk
LEBANON - The funeral service for Berton L. Monk will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov.16, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Rick Meade and the Rev. Austin Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Gray, Jeff Lasley, Rick Deel, Giles Fields, Dave Robinson and the Rev. Dr. James Belcher.
Mr. Monk, 76, of 265 Monk St., died unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his home.

Edna Mae Pickle
MARION - Edna Mae Pickle, 96, of Thomas Bridge, went home to be with her loving Lord Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, from Smyth County Community Hospital. She was of the Baptist faith.
Ms. Pickle was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Gilbert Pickle; three sons, Roy Ray Pickle, Edward Paul Pickle and Hubert Ralph "Bud" Pickle; and a daughter-in-law, Altie Garner Pickle. She is survived by three sons, William Howard Pickle and wife Veletta "Bee" of La Plata, Md., Robert Cecil Pickle and wife Burnette of Pomfret, Md., and Jospeh Donald Pickle and wife Pauline of Marion; four daughters, Myrtle Maxine Pickeral and husband, Harold "Diddie" of Culpeper, Va.; Wanda "Tootie" Parks and husband Jerome of Dalton, Ga., and Joyce Ann Pickle and Teresa Lynn Pickle, both of Marion; one sister, Callie Farris of South Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Adell Pipes of Indian Head, Md., and Lonnie Pruitt of Marion; 17 grandchildren; four step-grandchilden; 27 great-grandchidren; and several great-great-grandchildren; one special companion, her dog, "Prissy." Ms. Pickle was surrounded with friends too numerous to count, was active till the day she died, enjoyed shopping at Wal-Mart and helping those around her. She will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Billy Dean officiating. Burial will follow in West Cemetery, Marion. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is serving the Pickle Family.

Mackie D. Prater
ABINGDON - The funeral service for Mr. Mackie D. Prater will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Painter Creek Church of Christ with Mr. Richard Gaminde, Mr. Mike Trent, Mr. Mike Rife, Mr. E.W. Damron and Mr. Hiliary Underwood officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Methodist Cemetery, Abingdon.
Pallbearers will be Gary Prater, Lundy Prater, Danny Keith Prater, Ronnie Prater, Jimmy Silcox, Jerry Silcox, Ricky Stiltner and Rex Stiltner.

Pauline Mann Robins
ABINGDON - Mrs. Pauline Mann Robins, 78, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at the Grace Healthcare Center. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va. She was a member of the Charity Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Robert Robins; and a brother, Jimmy Mann.
She is survived by a son, Richard Robins and wife Brenda of Abingdon; a brother, Abe Mann of Abingdon; three grandchildren, Mary Rasnake, Randy Robins and Kathy Robins; two great-grandchildren, Candice Rasnake and Dakota Rasnake; two step-grandchilden, James Lewis and Marshall Lewis; five step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at 3 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Wesley Price and Rev. Mahlon Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Dual Rasnake, James Lewis, Marshall Lewis, Buddy Parris, Abe Mann Jr., Steven Gregory and Dakota Rasnake. Honorary pallbearers will be family and friends. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Grace Healthcare, Dr. Patrick Wallace and Dr. Roger Emory for the care they gave Mrs. Robins.

Funeral services for Marion Douglass Smithson will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gerry Jonas officiating. Burial will follow in Shipley Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Arthur Saylers, James Phillips, Jay Tallman, Clarence Parton, Ron Scott, Allen Smithson, David Sampson and Glenn Graybeal. Honorary pallbearers: Jerry Sampson, Terry Sampson, Tommy Smithson, Howard Wyatt and Dr. Mark Overbay.
Mr. Smithson, 71, 260 Broyles Lane, Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
