Christine Manning
Christine Manning, 65, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, died icon at her home from complications of Alzheimer's disease surrounded by her loving family and friends on Saturday, October 11, 2003. Mrs. Manning was born icon in Oquosoc, Maine, on February 5, 1938, the daughter of Fulbert and Alice Caron. She was a quality control supervisor at Ethan Allen furniture in Orleans, from which she retired in 1995. She was active in various community organizations in Island Pond. On June 8, 1957, she married icon Francis J. Manning of Island Pond, who survives her. She is also survived by her children: Gregory G. Manning of Phoenix, Arizona, Tammie J. Perez of Portsmouth, Kathryn J. Manning of Portsmouth, and John F. Manning of Marysville, Ohio; by seven grandchildren; by her brothers and sisters: Hector Caron of Bloomfield, Raymond Caron of Centerville, Iowa, Roland Caron of Groveton, New Hampshire, Marcel Caron of Phoenix, Arizona, Theresa Lavoie of Island Pond, and Jackie Lakin of Orleans; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Emilian Caron; and by her sisters Lucille Shaw and Jean LePerle. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on October 15 at St. James Catholic Church in Island Pond with the Reverend William Morgan officiating. Teresa M. Royea, 88, of Newport died icon in Newport on Wednesday, November 26, 2003. Mrs. Royea was born icon in Derby on September 29, 1915, the daughter of Joseph and Edith (Brunelle) Snay. She was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. She enjoyed her family. In 1942, she married icon Harry Royea Sr., who predeceased her in 1981. She is survived by her children: Miriam Carr of Newport, Harry Royea Jr. of Derby, and Carolyn Elliott and her husband, Charles, of Newport; by her brothers Robert Snay and his wife, Kay, of Vero Beach, Florida, and Fredrick Snay and his wife, Mary, of Newport; by her sisters Joyce Bushaw and her husband, Wilfred, of South Burlington and Phyllis Badger of Milton; by her grandchildren: Bernand Royea, Sheryl Kimball, Michelle Kelley, Teresa Liberty, Glenn Elliott, Melanie Elliott, and Courtney Elliott; by ten great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Timothy Carr; by her brothers: Howard, Richard, George, Charles, and Edward Snay; and by her sister Charlotte Snay. Travis Lee Richardson, 26, of Lowell died icon suddenly at his home on Tuesday, November 25, 2003. Mr. Richardson was born icon in Morrisville on September 23, 1977, the son of Dwight and Cynthia (Cassidy) Richardson. He worked as a mechanic for CCS in Morrisville. He was an active member of the Lowell Fire Department. He enjoyed four-wheeling with friends and snowmobiling in the winter. He is survived by his parents, Dwight and Cynthia Richardson, of Lowell; by his grandmother Ilene Richardson of Lowell; by his brothers Wayne Richardson and his wife, Melanie, of Lowell and Brian Richardson and his wife, Angel, of Lowell; by his nieces and nephews: Jacob and Cierra Richardson of Lowell, Alex Richardson of Lowell, and Alyssa Hamel of Brownington; and by several aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his grandparents: Percy Richardson, Aletia Martell, and Richard Cassidy. Rhoda Bubendey Metraux
Rhoda Bubendey Metraux, 89, of Greensboro died icon at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton on November 26, 2003. Ms. Metraux was a cultural anthropologist associated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York. She was an active researcher, teacher, and writer on broad aspects of anthropology and collaborated on many books and articles with anthropologist Margaret Mead. She conducted her own research in Haiti, Montserrat (British West Indies), and New Guinea. She is survived by her brother Paul F. Bubendey of Vero Beach, Florida; by her son, Daniel A. Metraux, of Staunton, Virginia; and by her grandchildren Katherine Metraux of Sacramento, California, and David Metraux of Syracuse, New York. Burial will occur during the summer in Greensboro.

Jacqueline Barbara Gosselin
Jacqueline Barbara Gosselin, 68, of Lowell died icon at her home with her family by her side on Saturday, November 29, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Gosselin was born icon on April 15, 1935, in Lowell, the daughter of Woodrow and Barbara (Souther) Bickford. She worked as a nurses' aide at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center for 14 years. She enjoyed painting, working in her flower garden, and spending time with her cats. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Gerard Gosselin; by her daughters Jennifer Gosselin of Lowell and Lisa Hilliker and her husband, Brent, of Norton; by her grandchildren Emily and Nathan Hilliker; by her brothers: Gary Warner of Connecticut, Vernon Warner of Lowell, Austin Warner of Pennsylvania, and Roy Warner of Florida; and by her sisters Connie Laplume of Westfield and Susie Arel of Lowell. Funeral services were held December 2 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend John Genco officiating. Herbert E. "Jimmy" Caouette
Herbert E. "Jimmy" Caouette, a longtime resident of Island Pond, died icon in Lyndonville on Wednesday, November 26, 2003. Mr. Caouette was born icon in Lewiston, Maine, to Mathilda and Emile Caouette. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1941 and served during World War II for five years in Europe. In 1943 he was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal for meritorious conduct as a rail transportation officer in North Africa. It was a rare and happy occasion when he met his sister Priscilla and brother Robert in Italy during the war. His brother Bert was a prisoner of war in Nuremberg, Germany. When the war ended, he returned home aboard the Queen Elizabeth along with 14,000 others returning to their homeland. In July 1941, on his first furlough from the U.S. Army, he married icon Lorraine Osborne, and they were blessed with six children. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on July 5, 2001. He was proud of his community of Island Pond in which he lived all of his life. He loved the people, the four seasons, and the tranquillity of a small town. Until he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in the summer of 2000, he could be seen taking his daily walk around the village and visiting with the townspeople. He had a great sense of humor and the desire to make people laugh. He was always up for a good joke. Throughout his life, he served his community in many ways including serving as selectman from 1962 to 1966. He was also an active member and past commander of Brighton Post No. 80 of the American Legion. He was presented with his life membership by the post in 1996. He was employed by the Canadian National Railroad until his retirement in 1983. For years he made the trip from Island Pond to Portland, Maine. He also was conductor on many of the special passenger trains that traveled to Island Pond. He was an avid collector of sports memorabilia, which he collected from all over the United States. A visit to the Caouette's home always included a tour of his "sports museum," which he displayed proudly. He was an avid hockey fan, and some of his best times were spent attending hockey games with his good friend, Gaetan Vallieres. His legacy will live on in his six children. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorraine; by six children: Richard of Rutland, Linda Goulet and her husband, Craig, of Island Pond, Janis and her husband, Burton, of Island Pond, Christine Hill of Fair Haven, and Eileen Bailey and Teresa Caouette of Island Pond; by his grandchildren: Christopher Goulet of Derby, Janet Warner of Canton, New York, Justin Goulet of Island Pond, Chad Phillips of Burlington, Tiffany Barnes of Essex Junction, Jodi and Craig Barnes of Island Pond, Michal Hill of Blacksburg, Virginia, Katherine Hill of Fair Haven, Anna Hill of Fair Haven, Katrina Caouette of Rutland, Jacob Bailey of Burlington, and Peter Bailey of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and by seven great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated November 29 at St. James' Catholic Church in Island Pond with the Reverend William Morgan officiating. Christopher Marshall Brown, 42, a former resident of Craftsbury, died icon Friday, November 28, 2003, in Whittier, California, following a long battle with cancer. Born in Seoul, Korea, on September 20, 1961, Mr. Brown came to live in Craftsbury with his American family ù Arnold and Judith Brown, Belinda, Gretchen, and Timothy ù in November 1964, just in time for a happy Thanksgiving. He was the first foreign adoption arranged by the Vermont Children's Aid Society. He attended grade school and high school in Craftsbury, graduating from Craftsbury Academy in 1979. He served in the U.S. Navy, traveling around the world on the Midway. He lived with and loved his family, his former wife, Huch, and their children: Bobby, Diana, and Elizabeth. He was a good provider and enjoyed improving his home in Long Beach, California. According to his brother Tim, "Chris lived life right, at home and school, with family and friends, in the U.S. Navy and at work for the gas company in Long Beach." A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 7, at 3 p.m., at the United Church in Craftsbury Common with Pastor Avril Cochran officiating. Contributions in Mr. Brown's memory may be given to a scholarship fund being established in care of Craftsbury Academy, Craftsbury Common, Vermont 05827.

Damon H. Allen, 82, of Derby died icon in Newport on Friday, November 28, 2003. Mr. Allen was born icon in West Charleston on December 8, 1920, the son of Harley and Kathleen (Lafoe) Allen. He loved fishing, working with wood, and sightseeing. He is survived by his sister Ruth Goddard of Derby. He was predeceased by his sister Arlene Poulin and by three brothers. Caroline C. Wells
Caroline C. Wells, 88, beloved wife of Robert Wells of Craftsbury, died icon at her home Tuesday, February 3, 2004, following a long illness. Mrs. Wells was born icon in West Suffield, Connecticut, on July 14, 1915, the daughter of Henry and Alice (Humphrey) Church. She married icon Robert Wells on March 10, 1943, in New Britain, Connecticut, where they made their home until the late 1960s, when they moved to Craftsbury. She loved her family and enjoyed playing cribbage, gardening, and traveling. Besides her husband, Robert, she leaves a daughter, Roberta Hodgdon, and her husband, Gary, of White River Junction; and a grandson, Daniel Hodgdon, who attends Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. A funeral service was held at the United Church of Craftsbury February 6 with the Reverend Ben Thurber officiating. Spring interment will be in Craftsbury Village Cemetery. Rodney C. Smith
Rodney C. Smith, 74, of Craftsbury, died icon Friday, February 6, 2004, at his home surrounded by family. Mr. Smith was born icon in Charleston, September 2, 1929, the son of Charles and Florence (Sykes) Smith. He attended grade school in Charleston and Derby Line. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On March 4, 1953, he married icon Marilyn Haney in Newport. They moved to Craftsbury in 1969 where they owned and operated the Craftsbury Garage until 1987 when he went to work at Vermont Precision Woodwork in Morrisville. He loved to spend time with his family, woodworking and playing cards. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, first in Newport then transferring to Morrisville. Besides his wife, Marilyn, of Craftsbury, he leaves three sons, John Smith, Steve Smith and his wife, Val, all of Craftsbury, and Roger Smith of Hill Air Force Base in Utah; a daughter, Tina, and her husband, Jeff Jackson, of Denver, Colorado; eight grandchildren, JJ Smith and his wife, Jodi, Jamie Smith and his wife, Jen, Chris Smith, Craig Smith, Chelsea Smith, Dillon Smith, and Samantha Jackson; and a great-grandson, Tre Smith. He also leaves a brother, Karl Smith of Albany, and a sister, Becky Weber of Cleveland, Ohio. He also had seven brothers and sisters who predeceased him. A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, at 3 p.m. at the United Church of Craftsbury on Craftsbury Common, with Pastor Avril Cochran officiating. Reverend L. Rossier Jr. Ph.D.
The Reverend Bernard L. Rossier Jr, PhD, of Myerstown, Pennsylvania, died icon at home on Wednesday, January 28, 2004, following a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Rossier was born icon May 18, 1936, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, the eldest child of the late Bernard L. Rossier Sr. and Marjorie E. Noe Rossier Burdick, of Orleans. Mr. Rossier graduated 50 years ago from Orleans High School, in the class of 1954. He then graduated from Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center, completing a two-year course in one year. He then served in the U.S. Army for three years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1958. Mr. Rossier also received a bachelor of science degree from the Northeast Bible Institute of Green Lane, Pennsylvania; a master of arts degree from Villanova University, Pennsylvania, in 1973, a CAS in education from Arizona State University in 1977, and his doctorate in education administration from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988. Mr. Rossier first served the Lord with an assistant pastor position at the Edgewood Assembly of God Church in Edgewood, New Jersey. Then, from 1964 to 1970, he served as pastor of the Cedar Run Assembly of God Church in West Creek, New Jersey. During his leadership there, he was instrumental in building a large addition to the church. His life of service to the Lord then took him to Pheonix, Arizona, where he taught at the American Indian Bible Institute, and also served as home mission teacher. He was also a professor at the Valley Forge Christian College in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. In 1986 he was called to serve as pastor of the Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Richmond, Pennsylvania. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Rossier was serving as a professor and president of the Jimmy Swaggart Ministries Seminary in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. Mr. Rossier was the author of many books as well as college curriculum courses in biblical studies, theology and Greek. At the time of his death he was still taping lectures for young seminarians. In his spare time he enjoyed studying Greek, writing, education, gardening, and home improvements. He was also very proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Dr. Rossier was first married icon to Avis C. Taylor Rossier. She died icon in an accident in 1969. On June 29, 1970, he married icon Eileen V. Ingraldi and they celebrated 33 years of marriage last year. He is survived by his mother, Marjorie Burdick of Orleans; his wife, Eileen, of Myerstown, Pennsylvania; and three children, Michael of Robesonia, Pennsylvania, and his fiance, Marjorie Pennypacker, Gregory Rossier of Champaign, Illinois, and his daughter, Wendy B. Rossier Hanth and her husband, Tom of Pottstown, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, (Everett) Nick Burdick and his wife, Cora Ann of Albany, Edwin Burdick and his wife, Susan of Brownington Center, Larry Burdick and his wife, Gert of Orleans, and Terry Burdick and his wife, Tracy of Newport; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his father, Bernard Rossier Sr., his stepfather, Willard (Gus) Burdick, his sister Christine Messer, and his sister Patricia Rossier. A celebration of his life was held on January 31 at the Grose Funeral Home in Myerstown. A graveside funeral service will be held on May 8 at 11:15 a.m., with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating, at the family lot in Pleasantview Cemetery icon in Orleans. Burial with full military honors will follow.

Geraldine A. Rundgren
Geraldine A. Rundgren, 68, of Albany died icon Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, following a brief illness. Mrs. Rundgren was born icon in Littleton, New Hampshire, on December 3, 1935, the daughter of Wayland R. and Miriam M. (Abbott) Sinclair. She attended school in St. Johnsbury and later married icon Ernest J. Rundgren, who predeceased her in 1998. She worked at Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Orleans for many years. She also worked at the B&W, and after her retirement from Ethan Allen, she substituted as a hot lunch cook in the school district. She enjoyed camping with her husband at Eden Lake in their camper. Survivors include two sons, Ernest J. Rundgren Jr. and his wife, Catherine, of Irasburg and Eric J. Rundgren of Albany; two daughters, Catherine Sargeant and her husband, Neal, of Danville and Kim Rundgren of Evansville; a brother, Wayland Sinclair, of Wheelock; two sisters, Lorraine Smith and her husband, David, of Wheelock and Nancy Isham of Danville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her mother-in-law, Doris Rundgren Andrews, and her husband, Victor, of Coventry. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernie, in 1998; and by a sister, Lauretta Sinclair. A memorial service was held February 7 at Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common with Father Mike Augustinowitz officiating. Interment of her ashes will be in Albany Village Cemetery icon in the spring. Roger William Percy Sr.
Roger William Percy Sr., 69, of Brownington died icon February 3, 2004, in Newport. Mr. Percy was born icon April 2, 1934, in Coventry, a son of George and Georgia (Buck) Percy. He entered the U.S. Army on December 2, 1952, where he was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged on November 6, 1954. He was employed as a carpenter for John C. Hunt of East Hardwick. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 798 of Newport. He enjoyed fishing and reading. John K. Martin
John K. "Jussi" Martin, 46, of Green Lane in West Charleston died icon peacefully after a long illness on February 7, 2004, at his home with his family at his side. He was born icon on June 4, 1957, in Finland, a son of Eero and Anja (Kossi) Martin. John Martin and his family moved to Vermont from Connecticut in 1998. He was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was able. He also liked gardening and canning vegetables, while his wife grew flowers. Mr. Martin built his own home on Dane Hill in West Charleston. On November 16, 1991, he married icon Gail Whitehouse of West Charleston who survives him. He is also survived by his children Victoria, Daniel, and Peter Martin of West Charleston; his step-children, Alan Esposito of Derby and Richard Esposito Jr. of Hamden, Connecticut; by his parents, Eero and Anja Martin of Lake Worth, Florida; by a sister Tiina Hawley and her husband, John, of Danbury, Connecticut; also by special friends and neighbors Mike and Jessica Green and their children Michaela and Jordan; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother. Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. James E. LaRock, 74, of Newport died icon peacefully February 3, 2004, in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Mr. LaRock was born icon February 20, 1929, in Hyde Park, a son of William and Effie (Jones) LaRock. On July 1, 1990, he married icon Caroline Trucott, who survives him. He was a self-employed taxi driver. He enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, cooking, hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and listening to country music. He enjoyed woodworking, which provided gifts for his family. He enjoyed having the family together, especially his children and grandchildren. He often traveled to Connecticut to visit his children, and he enjoyed his cat TuTu. He was willing to give his friends a helping hand when needed. He is survived by his wife, Caroline LaRock, of Newport; by the following children: James E. LaRock Jr. of Wallingford, Connecticut, Lark Victoria and Roger Blatchley of Seymour, Connecticut, Laurel Ellen and Michael Piacenza of Derby, Connecticut, Jeffrey W. LaRock of Biddeford, Maine, and William LaRock of Boynton Beach, Florida; by stepchildren: Linda Ann Petit of Hartland, Sharon L. and Bob Blair of Orleans, Kathy Rubio of Dos Palos, California, and Cindy and Richard Mason of Coventry; by eight grandchildren; by one great-grandchild; by 12 stepgrandchildren; by five stepgreat-grandchildren; by a sister, Wyonna Lyman, and her husband, Norman, of White River Junction; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Chet; by stepdaughter Judy Guttierez; and by granddaughter Brittney Blatchley. Funeral services were held February 6 with Gordon Daggett officiating. Spring interment will be in Newport Center Cemetery. Arrangements are by Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Homes.
