Deloris Maxine Althoff

Deloris Althoff passed away peacefully at the Summitview Healthcare Center in Yakima on February 16, 2011 with family members by her side. She was 88. Deloris was born March 5, 1922 in Dildine Kansas, to Hugo & Florence Larson. She was raised on a farm outside of Chanute, Kansas that her grandfather had homesteaded.

Deloris graduated from Ottawa University with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1945, and taught high school for a year in rural Kansas. She then attended Berkeley Baptist Divinity College, where she met her future husband, William “Bill” Althoff. Deloris & Bill were married in the Colfax Baptist Church near Chanute on June 3, 1947.

Bill and his pastor’s wife (a role that Deloris greatly enjoyed) ministered at churches in Iowa and Oklahoma before coming out to Yakima in 1952, where Bill was the first pastor at Fruitvale Baptist Church. Deloris finished her teaching degree from Central Washington College, and they settled onto a small farm near Zillah (cattle, black raspberries, and later, Rainier cherries). In 1960 Deloris began teaching elementary school in Granger, from where she retired in 1980. Deloris & Bill were long time members of Buena Baptist Church. They travelled extensively in retirement, often snow birding in Arizona. Deloris & Bill moved to Yakima in 1992, and to Living Care retirement home in 1997.

Deloris was well known for her strong Christian values, and endured physical ailments by breaking into song, or by reciting the poetry that she had written. She excelled at needlepoint and quilting. She is survived by four sons and their wives, Gordon & Mary in New York City, Roger & Carmen in Zillah, Glenn & Jan in South Bend, and Kim & Lauren in Tacoma. Deloris was blessed with four grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Eleanor Havens in Tucson, Mid Booe in Pittsburg, Kansas and brother Harold in Hoisington, Kansas. Her brother Lawrence “Bud” preceded her in death.

Bill passed away on December 6, 2010, after a happy marriage that spanned 63 years. Deloris had kept a diary most of her life, but the last entry was on December 7: “I am too tired to write anymore”. From one of her many poems:

My voice has been silenced
My pen has run dry
The thread in my needle
No more will fly.

For I’ve gone to Heaven
My Savior to meet
Where I can now worship
As I bow at his feet.

A memorial service will be held for Deloris Althoff on February 26, 2 PM at Meyer Auditorium, 215 N. 40th Ave in Yakima. All are welcome. Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah is in care of the arrangements.

Alicia Hernandez Rivas

On February 15, 2011 in the quiet of the night, Alicia Hernandez Rivas left this temporary world and entered into eternity after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 77.

She was born on January 8, 1934 in Brady, Texas, and was one of many children to Eduardo Hernandez and Rosa Nieves. Alicia known too many as Alice met and married Francisco Rivas in her early twenties.

They moved their family to California where she worked for Norton Ranch as a fieldworker, and later became a caregiver to the elderly. Alice loved to cook, read and do embroidery work (especially on pillow cases). One thing she will be greatly remembered for is her love of anything sweet. Alice had a sweet spirit about her, always wanting things to remain calm. She loved to laugh and crack jokes, but most of all, she loved her family dearly. She took pride in going to her children’s sporting events, and tending to her grandchildren. She would bounce the babies on her lap while singing a tune that only she could say, making laughter ring throughout the house. Alice was known to wake up at the crack of dawn to make her special batch of homemade tortillas that her children thought were the best.

She was a beautiful woman who touched the hearts of many. She was “Nana” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She taught her family to love each other, how to forgive and respect others, and to always say you’re sorry.

Alice committed her life to Christ early in her life through the Catholic Faith, she raised her children to follow in that path. Much later in her years she converted from Catholicism to the faith of Jehovah Witness, where she was deeply rooted in prayer and faith, believing and trusting in the Jehovah.

She moved to Washington State in 2001 to live with her oldest daughter, Sylvia Borland who helped with the care of her mother. Later, her other daughter, Rosie Rodriguez, moved to Washington to help aid in her care.

Alice is survived by six children; Frank Rivas, Blythe, Ca; Sylvia Borland, Zillah, Wa; Rosie Rodriguez (Rick Rivera), Yakima, Wa; Rudy Rivas, Blythe Ca; Richard Rivas, Wa; Henry Rivas (Nisey Rivas), Glendale, Az. Three brothers, Johnny Ledezma, Blythe, Ca; Edward Hernandez, and Raymond Ledezma, both of Texas; three sisters, Corina Orona, Texas; Janie Ledezma, Long Beach Ca and Sylvia Porter, Blythe, Ca.; twenty-one grandchildren and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Eduardo Hernandez and Rosa Nieves and her son Samuel Rivas.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Burial will follow at the Zillah Cemetery.
