Dennis Auve

Dennis P. Auve, 67 of Centralia, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at home.

Dennis was born July 28, 1941 in Yakima to Gene and Alice Auve. He attended Marquette and College St. Martin in Olympia. He retired from CPS after working for the state of 37 years. He married Arlene Shafer August 11, 1983, and they have been together for 25 years. Dennis enjoyed fishing and loved his grandkids and being with them. He loved cooking.

Survivors include his love wife Arlene; seven sons, Dennis of Missouri, John of Moxee, Ryan of Texas, Gene of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, James of Centralia, Ray of Pennsylvania and Matthew of Chehalis; three daughters, Denise and Kathy of Tacoma and Laura of Canada; a brother, Fr. Perron Auve of Kennewick; a sisters, Mary-Alice Fontaine of Richland; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Viewing will be Friday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral home. Graveside services will be held Monday, October 20, 2008 at West Hills Memorial Park.

James C. Dyer

James Cassin Dyer, 64, of Tieton, pased away Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at home.

James was born May 24, 1944 in Oakland, CA. He farmed in the Yakima Valley for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne Dyer of Tieton; a son, Robert Dyer of Riberbank, CA; a daughter, Rosie Drewniany of Yakima; and three grandchildren.

Private family services will be held.

Katherine Elisabeth Sharp

Katherine Elisabeth Sharp, 52, of Yakima passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2008 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Katherine came to Yakima in 1977 and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her loving hsuband, Don Sharp of Yakima; her father, Herman Banks of California; her mother, Shirley Banks of North Dakota; two daughters, Melissa Morfin and Angie Alltus, both of Yakima; a brother, Ron Banks of North Dakota and eight grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no services.

Ernest Eugene Darby

Ernest Eugene Darby, 55, of Selah passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Ernie was born April 15, 1953 in Stayton, OR to Barry & Cretus Darby. Ernie was raised in Alaska where he spent many years hunting and camping with his brothers and sister. He served in the U.S. Army during the 1970’s. For the last 16 years, he was employed as a heavy equipment mechanic for NC Machinery in Yakima.

With an incredible sense of humor, Ernie enjoyed a playful orneriness that made him great fun to be around. He was known as “Rambo” by his gaming buddies, and “Furby” by his co-workers. Not only was he fun, he was a loyal friend and was always there when you needed a helping hand. He had an incredible work ethic.

Ernie enjoyed many things, the greatest of which was his family. He was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed motorcycling, ATV’ing and RC flying. Ernie was also an avid fisherman and a multi-talented craftsman. Friends and family wouldn’t call an electrician, plumber or a mechanic. They would just call Ernie. There was never a problem that he couldn’t find a solution for.

He is survived by his wife, Carol of Selah; his mother, Cretus Darby of Wilbur, WA; two sons, Matthew Collins of Selah and Michael Collins of Pineville, NC; four brothers, Arthur of Wilbur, WA, Darrell of Eagle River, AK, Terry of Chugiak, AK and Dennis of New Mexico; and a sister, Karen Campbell of Tucson, AZ.

Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 28 from 1 until 4 p.m. at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be held Monday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

Bryan Degante

Bryan Degante, infant son of Felipe and Natalia (Briones) Degante Lopez of Sunnyside, died Tuesday, September 23, 2008.

Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, September 28 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside, with a rosary following at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Setember 29 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sunnyside. Burial will be in Mexico.

Richard Castilleja

YAKIMA – Richard Castilleja, 61, of Yakima passed away Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Yakima Regional Medical Center.

Richard was born April 1, 1947 in Toppenish to Luis and Jovita (Hernandez) Castilleja. He was raised in Toppenish, graduating from Toppenish High School in 1967.

Richard served in the U.S. Air Force. He met and married Dianne Enslow Sept. 19, 1970 in Toppenish. Together they raised their family in Toppenish. They moved to Zillah in 1980 where Richard worked as a funeral prearrangement insurance agent. They moved to Yakima in 1998 where Richard continued to work.

He loved his work and enjoyed the people he met. Richard never knew a stranger, and enjoyed being with people and his family. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne of Yakima; his mother, Jovita Castilleja of Granger; three sons, Justin of Yakima, Daniel of Sioux Falls, SD and Joshua of Pasco; two daughters, Kristen Barrientos and Jessica Rinker, both of Yakima; five brothers, Abel and Mike of Yakima, John of Seattle, Rom of Benton City and Fabian of Grandview; ten sisters, Alice Lara of Tacoma, Irene Gutierrez and Faye Resendez of Sunnyside, Rose Greenwood, Julie Rodriguez and Lucy Hoffman, all of Yakima, Mary Winterfeld of Selah, Livia Castilleja of Granger, Alana Delgado of Toppenish and Lisa Castilleja of Seattle; and thirteen grandchildren.

Viewing will be Thursday, Sept. 25 from 1 until 6 p.m. at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hill Funeral Home, with Rosary Vigil to follow at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 26 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Yakima. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Toppenish.

John Arthur Garrison

SUNNYSIDE - John Arthur Garrison, kind and dedicated son of Roger K. and Cloe T. Garrison, passed away unexpectedly of complications of diabetes, at his home in Sunnyside, WA on September 20, 2008.

John was born in Aberdeen, Washington on January 23, 1947. He spent his early years in Seattle and moved with his family to Sunnyside in 1954. He graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1965.

John was a Vietnam-era Veteran, enlisting in the US Army in 1968. He completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and his advanced training in Military Intelligence at Fort Holabird, Maryland. John achieved the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1971.

John graduated from Yakima Valley Community College where he studied Criminal Justice, and he received his BA in History from Central Washington University, while working full-time at the Juvenile Justice Center in Yakima, Washington.

After graduating from the Washington State Law Enforcement Academy John worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Klickitat County and later as a Residential Counselor for Central Washington Comprehensive Mental Health.

Recent years were spent managing his parent's orchard. John spent many a cold spring night watching the temperature and starting the wind machine when the temperature became critical.

John loved horses and worked as a trail guide on Mount Rainier and at the Flying L Ranch on Mt. Adams during his high school summers. He grew up hunting with his grandfather, father and brothers and had a wonderful understanding of the outdoors, nurtured through his years as a Boy Scout. John was also passionate about pursuing his hobbies of prospecting and geology with his best friend Scott Stiltner and his cousin Marty Charvet.

John was a voracious reader and read, literally, thousands of books on a wide variety of topics. He was also an avid collector of military history memorabilia, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of weapons, munitions and ballistics. He greatly enjoyed teaching his younger sisters and nephews how to shoot and handle firearms respectfully.

Most of all, John loved being with his friends and family. He was a very dependable, caring and generous man who never had a harsh word for anyone. He will be missed terribly by his family, friends and neighbors.

John was a wonderful brother to Catherine (Ron) Smith, Carolyn (Robert) Williams, Paul (Kathi) Garrison, Douglas (Bobbi) Garrison and Christine Garrison. And a kind and supportive uncle to Christoper (Kay Lynn), Casey and Jacob Garrison, Jason (Petra) Smith, Christine Jones, Rachel and Steven Smith.

Viewing will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Thursday, September 25 with recitation of the Rosary at 6:00 PM at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Sunnyside. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Grandview. A private family burial with Military Honors will be held at the Outlook Cemetery under the direction of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Memorials if desired may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
