Johnson, John Robert
(May 6th, 1941 - January 27th, 2011)
Madison - John Robert Johnson, age 69, passed away January 27, 2011 at Select Specialty Hospital in Madison. He was born May 6, 1941 in Freeport, Illinois to Herbert E. and Paschal M. Johnson (Flannery). Bob grew up in Madison, graduated from Central High School, worked at the Wisconsin Air National Guard, Satterfield Electronics, co-owned and operated Print & Mail Advertising for 35 years and was part time employee of Permar Security. Bob is survived by his wife of 41 years, Barbara (Arnett), sons Shawn R. (Lori) and Tim Johnson; daughters Lisa (David) Holewinski and Pam Johnson; brother William (Marilyn) Johnson; sister Margaret (Paul) Schaub, aunt Joan Flannery; sister-in-law Denise (Don) Thorpe; brother-in-law Steven Arnett; granddaughters Gabrielle Johnson and Evelyn Holewinski; and many nieces and nephews. A devoted husband and family man, he involved himself in his children's activities including bowling, softball, baseball, volleyball, and scouting. He was a man of strong faith and a charter member of Heritage Congregational Church where he actively participated for many years. Bob's family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the special care and compassion of the folks at Select Specialty Hospital during his last days. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 2 p.m. at HERITAGE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, 3102 Prairie Rd, Madison. A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Bob's name. Elmer, Viola R.
(September 20th, 1924 - January 28th, 2011)
Viola R. Elmer, age 86, died Friday, January 28, 2011 in a Madison hospital. She was born September 20, 1924, in Mt. Horeb, the daughter of Martin and Rose (Adler) Keller. On October 18, 1943, Viola was united in marriage with Delbert Elmer in Mt. Horeb. In addition to her husband, Delbert, survivors include: Richard (Barb) Elmer, Darlene (Tom) Phillips, Ken Elmer, Debe (Mark) Henry. They are also blessed with l0 Grandchildren and 9 l/2 Great Grandchildren. Her siblings, Marty (Jo) Keller, Harold (Shirley) Keller, Donna (Jim) Gehin, Rollie Keller, Diane (John) Shea, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Harold (Ruby) Elmer, brother-in-law, Ken Frey and numerous nieces and nephews. Viola was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Florence and twin sister, Vera. Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, February 3 at OUR SAVIOR'S LUTHERAN CHURCH 550 Lincoln Drive with Reverend Dr. David J. Berggren officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 4 - 7 pm Wednesday at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME and again at the church one hour prior to service on Thursday.Mom: What an example you have set for us to follow. Hanson, Obert H.
(March 3rd, 1923 - January 28th, 2011)
Stoughton - Obert H. Hanson, age 87, passed away at Nazareth House in Stoughton on Friday, January 28, 2011. He was born in Deerfield on March 3, 1923, the eldest son of Olaf and Marie (Severson) Hanson. Obert served four years in the Army during WWII. On November 13, 1948 he was united in marriage to Kathleen McCarthy, the first couple to be married at First Lutheran Church. Obert worked for over 35 years at Uniroyal. Following his retirement he volunteered many hours at the Stoughton Senior Center. Obert is survived by five children, Henry, Dean, Colleen (Tim) Sauer, Jeanette (Bill) Fried and Patrick Hanson; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and siblings, Dorothy Zehr and James (Ginny) Hanson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant daughter, Lois; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay Hanson; and brother, Palmer Hanson. Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the Olson-Holzhuter-Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 10:00 AM until the time of services Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc or to the Stoughton Senior Center. A special thank you to HospiceCare for the wonderful care of both Obert and Kathleen.

Sweitzer, June M.
(June 16th, 1928 - January 28th, 2011)
June M. Sweitzer died peacefully on Friday, January 28, 2011. June and her identical twin sister, Jean (Steffen), were born June 16, 1928, the daughters of Ray (Pat) and Selma (Babler) Schoonover. She grew up in Monticello and Monroe. June graduated from the UW-Madison in 1950, and taught kindergarten for 7 years in Milwaukee and Madison. She married Larry Sweitzer in 1956, and they raised their 4 children in Madison. June contributed her time and energy to the United Way, as elder and deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church, gave tours of Madison for the Madison Convention Bureau and most recently volunteered for the American Red Cross with her sister Jean, with whom she remained extremely close throughout her life. June is preceded in death by her husband, Larry, and her older brother, Richard. She is survived by her four children, Julie (Steve Kahlenbeck) of St. Louis Park, MN, Sally of Madison, Laurie (Bill) Hentges of Reedsburg, and David (Susan) of Madison, and her grandchildren Andrew, Edie, Kali, Josie, Emily, Ashley, Cole and Hudson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 31, at WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 4100 Nakoma Road, Madison with the Rev. Alex Thornberg officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 6021 University Avenue, Madison. Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, HospiceCare Inc. or the American Red Cross. The family wishes to thank the staff of HospiceCare for their tender care of June in her last days.

Harris, Bernard
(June 20th, 1926 - January 28th, 2011)
Bernard Harris passed away peacefully on Friday, January 28, 2011 at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, LA following complications from heart surgery. Bernard was born on June 20, 1926 in New York City, the son of Samuel S. and Ella L. (Heyman) Harris. An academically precocious youngster, he graduated at an early age from Townsend-Harris High School, and then entered City College of New York. During the midst of his college education, he was drafted into the army, assigned to the Counter Intelligence Corps, and sent to Germany near the end of World War II. Upon completion of military service, he finished his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration at City College in 1946. He changed his academic focus to mathematics and statistics, earned a master's degree from George Washington University in 1953 and, in one year, completed his doctorate at Stanford University in 1958. During the years between his master's and doctorate degrees, he worked as a statistician at the U.S. Census Bureau and as a mathematician for the National Security Agency. After completion of his doctorate, he became an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He moved to Madison, WI to work as a professor in the Mathematics Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1964 to 1985 and as a professor in the Statistics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1966 to 2002. After his retirement from UW-Madison, he rejoined the faculty of the Statistics Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was an adjunct faculty member there until his death. Bernard enjoyed visiting professorships at the Technical Institute in Munich, Germany; Technical University of Eindhoven, Netherlands; University of Lund, Sweden; the Mathematics Institute Steklova, Moscow, Russia; University of Muenster, Germany; Heinrich Heine University in Duesseldorf, Germany; and the Kungliska Techniska Hogskolan. He was a member of many commissions and advisory boards for the government including a review board of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Statistics Task Force for the FAA/DOD Committee on Material Properties. He was an elected fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association. He was proud to be one of founding members of the Section on Risk Analysis for the American Statistical Association and served as its first chair. He was a member of the Classification Society of North America, and served on its board of directors. He was also a member of the International Classification Society and the American Mathematical Association.He was a recipient of the Pioneers of Science Award. Professor Harris was a perennial advocate of and contributor to statistical science for the Department of the Army. He participated as part of the Mathematics Research Center at Wisconsin that supported the Army in addressing research questions and presented his work at countless annual statistical conferences sponsored by the Army spanning the years 1964-2010. His contributions to risk analysis, reliability, probability, and statistical inferences with application to open DOD questions, such as the survivability of subterranean targets, was recognized in 1982 with the Wilks Award for Contributions to Statistical Methodologies in Army Research, Development and Testing. His work continued to address current problems in his later years, with recent work concerning mathematical methods in combating terrorism and his 2010 paper entitled "Random Contamination of Semiconductor Materials." Bernard was the author of the book, Theory of Probability and the editor of Spectral Analysis of Time series and Graph Theory and its Applications. He published hundreds of articles and reviews in professional journals over the course of his career. He was most proud of his work in random mappings, combinatorics, reliability and risk analysis. In addition to his academic interests, Bernard enjoyed a wide variety of music (classical, opera and jazz), reading in several languages, gourmet cooking, films, and doing the New York Times Crossword Puzzles in ink. He loved to create simple and complex puns. Most of all, Bernard deeply loved and appreciated his family and steadfastly supported them with his advice and presence. Bernard was a member of the Beth Isreal congregation in Madison. Bernard married Anita (Greenberg) in 1949. He and Anita had four children: Shelley Nolte, Mark Harris (Katherine), David Harris (Susan) and Susan Handrich (Tom). His wife, Anita, died in 1977. He married Susan Stephens Burns in 1983 and was a stepfather to Laura Burns (Brad Sinner) and Erin Charles (Jesse). He was the proud grandfather of Laura Boss, Madeline and Andrew Harris, Max and Ben Handrich, Duncan Charles, and Milo Burns. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Alan and Alvin; his first wife, Anita, and his beloved daughter, Shelley. A funeral service will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison, on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Rabbi Joshua Ben Gideon officiating. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, any memorials will be directed to the establishment of an award through the American Statistical Association to support the education of young statisticians.

Steinke, Helme I.
(April 22nd, 1919 - January 28th, 2011)
Helme Irene Steinke, age 91, passed peacefully away on January 28, 2011 at a local healthcare center. She was born on April 22, 1919, in Embarrass, MN, the daughter of John and Emelia (Sikkila) Nelmark. She graduated from Alango High School in Angora, MN in 1937. She was married to Earl E. Steinke on July 1, 1944. Helme was a gentle, humble woman who showed compassion, kindness, patience and respect to all people. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. She loved taking classes at MATC, traveling, baking, gardening and spending time with her family. During her life she had varied interests and employment as a cake decorator, a nanny, a nursing assistant, an aircraft riveter during World War II, and her favorite position, which was in the Bursar's office at the University of Wisconsin, from which she retired. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a former member of the Finnish American Society.
She is survived by her children and grandchildren: John E. Steinke (Edwina) of Gambrills, MD; Sharyn S. Juneau (Patrick) of Marshfield,WI; James E. Steinke (Kathy) of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; Sandra K. Granroth (Neal) of Fitchburg, WI and two stepdaughters, Jean Green of Springfield, MO and Betty Denney (Forrest) of Cottage Grove, WI.
Grandchildren: Ida-Marie and Eric Steinke; Kristi Martiny; Michelle Ninneman-Rapacz (James); Gary Steinke; Jennifer Steinke; Wendy Baranowski (Dave); Gustave, Lawrence, Bonnie and Hans Granroth; Linda Carney (Mike); Jim McGinley; Ruth Merath (Dennis); and Billy McGinley.
Great grandchildren: Kara and Malina Martiny; Sam, Lillia and Olivia Rapacz; Lindsey (Todd) Finley; Ryan and Erin McGinley; Austin, Mariah and Michelle Merath; Kristen McGinley; and three great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Gust (Aili) Nelmark of Embarrass, MN; and her sister Helga Ballentine of Carmichael, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl E. Steinke; her grandson Garrett T. Ninneman; six sisters: Hilma Benson of Milwaukee, WI; Hilda Kangas of Grand Rapids, MN; Hazel Siro of Cook, MN; Helen Ritala of Eveleth, MN; Helia Aho of Babbitt, MN; Esther Clarkson of Sacramento, CA; and two brothers: John Nelmark of Cook, MN; and Wayne Nelmark of Virginia, MN. Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, February 3, at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 322 E. Washington Avenue, where friends may call from 9:30 A. M. until time of service. Reverend Ken Smith will officiate. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens in Cottage Grove, WI. Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church. Hefty, Marianne E.
(December 8th, 1926 - January 29th, 2011)
Marianne Elizabeth Hefty, 84, of Madison passed away January 29, 2011 at home after a long illness. She was born December 8, 1926 in Monroe, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Roy and Pearl (Neuenschwander) Wenger. She was the oldest of 4 siblings. On June 15, 1945, she married Lloyd M.(Matt) Hefty and spent 48 wonderful years together before her husband's death in 1994. Marianne graduated from Monroe High School and began working in accounting for retail stores such as Woolworths and Kresges. She spent most of her professional career at Madison Gas Electric where she retired at the age of 76. She was an active member of Memorial United Church of Christ of Fitchburg and a member of the Elks and the Shriners. Marianne is survived by her daughters, Jill Kreisler and Susan Midthun; and her son, Matthew; grandchildren, Terrie Ann Jones and her husband Dan, Scott Kreisler, Michael King and Becky King, Brian Hefty and his wife Sara, Adam and Eric Hefty; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Amanda Jones; sisters, Sally Disrud and Alice Jahn; and sister-in-law, Jane Wenger. She was preceded in death by her brother, R. John (Sonny) Wenger; and son-in-law, Terry Midthun. A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 4 until 7 p.m. at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. A Funeral Service for Marianne will be held on Friday, February 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 5705 W. Lacy Road, Fitchburg, WI 53711 with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to Memorial United Church of Christ of Fitchburg; the Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Zor Shriners, 575 Zor Shrine Place, Madison, WI 53719; or the HospiceCare Foundation, Inc., 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711. The family would like to thank every one that helped with the care of Marianne during the end of her life, especially Pastor Phil, Mary, the parish nurse, all the caring people of HospiceCare and Donna, a great friend and neighbor.
