Gilbert Kirchhoff
Gilbert G. Kirchhoff, 84, formerly of the town of Pleasant Valley, Eau Claire County, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Dove Healthcare Nursing & Rehabilitation in Eau Claire.
Gilbert was born January 30, 1916, in Waverly, Iowa, to Richard and Ada (Hogberg) Kirchhoff.
As a young child, the family moved to a farm on Hwy. 93 and then to a farm on Hwy. F, both in the town of Pleasant Valley, where he farmed with his brother, Dale, until ill health moved them to Eau Claire.
Gilbert was in the United States Army in World War II and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of the VFW and American Disabled Veterans. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards with his family and friends.
He is survived by four sisters, Ardis Crowe of Eau Claire, Edna Pagenkopf (Norman) of Danbury, Wis., Dorothy McQueen of Mound, Minn., and Arlene O'Connor (Robert) of New Auburn; three brothers, Dale (Beverly) of Eau Claire, Lawrence "Barney" (Shirley) of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Verlyn (Dolores) of Eau Claire; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Hilda Baker and Violet Beaver.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m., with Reverend Joel Hoelter officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Smith Funeral Chapel and from noon until the time of services at the church.
Gilbert will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

John Peuse
FALL CREEK -- John A. Peuse, 60, of Fall Creek, Wis., died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
John was born November 2, 1940, to Mandus and Grace (Schanon) Peuse who lived on a farm near Fall Creek. He had no siblings. His father died in 1975, and his mother in 1994. For the past 10 or 12 years, he has worked at Equity Livestock Co-op. Prior to that, he worked at Walters Brewery for many years until their closing.
He is survived by several cousins. Local ones are Rachel Kaeding, Leatha Dodge and Steve Kaeding, all of Fall Creek; and an uncle, John Schanon of Eau Claire.
There will be no visitation.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
The Cremation Society of Wisconsin is serving the family.

George Sperger
ELMWOOD -- George F. Sperger, 86, of Elmwood, died Tuesday April 17, 2001, at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood.
George was born July 28, 1914, in the township of Eau Galle, Dunn County. He was the son of Albert and Mary (Lecheler) Sperger. George was raised in that community; he graduated from the Elmwood High School in 1934. He worked for Dairy Herd Improvement Association in St. Croix County for several years. In 1941, George joined the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theater of WWII. George was discharged from the Army in 1945, in California. George made his home in California, working as an electrician for several manufacturing companies. George married Mary L. Krohn Nelson on June 29, 1951, in California. George continued working as an electrician until he retired. Mary died in 1989, and in the fall of 1997, George moved to Menomonie and lived in Autumn Village. In 1999, he became a resident of the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood, where he has remained the rest of his life.
George is survived by three brothers, Caroll (Marcy) of Red Wing, Minn., Herbert (Maria) of Roslyn, Pa., and Albert (Beth) of Eau Claire; two sisters, Joan (Shafer) of Eau Galle and Lyn (Robert) Paradise of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Sperger of Durand; and 17 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Sr. Mary Jean "Bernie" Sperger; and two brothers, Joseph in infancy and Bernard "Bud" Sperger.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, at Rhiel Funeral Home in Elmwood, with Alfred Wolf officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery-Farm Hill, rural Elmwood.
Friends may call one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home.

John Colliton
WHITEHALL -- John E. Colliton, lifelong resident of Whitehall, Wisconsin, passed away suddenly at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wisconsin, on June 1, 2001, following a recent illness.
John was born June 22, 1944, to Edward J. and Harriet E. (Hegge) Colliton. He was an all-around athlete, lettering in football, basketball, baseball, track, and golf at Whitehall High School, where he graduated in 1962. John attended UW-Eau Claire and worked with his father at E. J. Colliton Plumbing & Heating, Inc. of Whitehall for several years. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves. John was employed as an Operating Engineer in pipeline construction, primarily at Desco Construction, Inc. of Hayfield, Minnesota, and North Central Pipeline of Iowa, until becoming partially disabled in 1986.
Prior to his disability, John was an active member of the Whitehall community, especially the Whitehall Country Club, and a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also served as Assistant Coach for the Whitehall High School Girls Basketball Team in 1977-78. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 234 of Des Moines, Iowa, from 1969, until the time of his death and was a current member of the Whitehall Country Club. John was an avid sports fan and exceptional golfer all of his life. He had his first hole-in-one at age 16 and his fourth at age 46. He won numerous club championships and regional tournaments, including a Chippewa Valley Golf Association (CVGA) Championship.
John will be missed and remembered by his family and the many friends he made through the course of his life. He is survived by his mother, of Whitehall; sister, Virginia (Joseph) Bogstad, Virginia Beach, Vir.; brother, David (Sandra) Colliton, Fort Collins, Colo.; sister, Carolyn (David) Sorlie, Tonto Verde, Ariz.; sister, Susan Colliton, La Crosse, Wis.; nephews, William (Lenore), John, and Thomas Bogstad; nieces, Ann (Bogstad) Kelly, Debra Bogstad, Jill Colliton, and Julie (Pat) Borroum; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father; paternal grandparents, James and Rose (De Tamble) Colliton of Minneapolis; and maternal grandparents, Sigvald and Emilia (Bensend) Hegge of Whitehall. John was formerly married to Mary Kostner of Arcadia.
John wished to be an organ donor and his remains will be cremated.
A memorial service is planned for Monday, July 9, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church in Whitehall, with visitation at the church starting one hour before the service. A lunch will be served in the church following the service.
The Jack Funeral Home of Whitehall is helping the family with arrangements.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the John Colliton Memorial Fund.
Remember John when he was well and happy. Now he is wearing a Green Jacket and swapping stories at the eternal Master's tournament.

Lila Harmon
DURAND -- Lila F. "Sue" Harmon, 72, of Durand, died June 4, 2001, at Oakview Care Center in Durand.
Sue was the daughter of Allen and Minnie (DeLong) Maxfield. She was born November 8, 1928, in Dunn County and grew up in rural Elmwood. She married Kenneth "Bullet" Harmon in 1946, in Eau Galle. After marriage, they lived in Eau Galle. They moved to Durand in 1979, where she remained the rest of her life. Her husband Bullet passed away September 18, 1992.
Sue is survived by three daughters, Lorraine Harmon of Baraboo, Brenda (Dennis) Smith and Roxanne (Robert) Weishapple, both of Durand; one son, Kenneth "Buzz" (Mary Sue) of Mondovi; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Emma Hollingsworth of Buhl, Idaho; two sisters-in-law, Eilene Anderson of Filer, Idaho, and LaVerle "Peggy" Maxfield of Baldwin; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by, besides her husband, her parents; one great-granddaughter, Jasmine Lorraine Harmon-Beaton; and two brothers, Clifford and Robert Maxfield.
A good woman has been called away,
She was kind and understanding,
Her hands were strong and gentle,
Her smile and laughter filled
hearts with joy,
Though she never more will
walk among us,
The memories she left behind
Will give us joy and happiness
amid the sorrows and tears.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand. Rev. Matthew J. Molinaro will officiate. Burial will be in St. Henry's Cemetery, Eau Galle.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home.

Marvin Lemke
Marvin A. "Joe" Lemke, 75, of Altoona, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born on May 4, 1926, in Almond, Wisconsin, the son of Max and Mollie (Pomerenke) Lemke.
Joe married Lois Morgan on May 20, 1944, in Almond, Wis. He entered the U.S. Army on January 30, 1945. He was a member of the 13th Field Artillery, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Following his honorable discharge in October, 1946, Joe and Lois lived in Almond, the Stevens Point area and Wausau before moving to Altoona in 1969.
Joe was an over-the-road truck driver for 24 years, retiring from Glenndenning Motorways in 1976.
He was a member of the Mead-Rath-Gutke Legion Post #339 in Almond and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Eau Claire.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; four children, Arlene (Jerome) Austreng of Escondido, Calif., Sonja (David) Scott of Waynesville, Mo., Richard (Theresa) Lemke of Illinois and Carol (William Hawke) Lemke of Eau Claire; eight grandchildren, Collin (Laura) Austreng of Murrieta, Calif., Sheila (Terry) Turner of Dublin, Ohio, Michael (Laura) Sowinski of Sun Prairie, Wis., Laurie (Bruce Kapellen) Sowinski of Schofield, Wis., Mark Lambrecht of Columbus, Ohio, Amy (Jerome) Martinek of Chippewa Falls, Wis., and Keith and Brian Lemke of Calif.; six great-grandchildren, Amber, Tyler and Austin Sowinski of Schofield, Wis., Andrew and Samantha Austreng of Murrieta, Calif., and Keaton Martinek of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; two brothers, William (Jackie) Lemke and Fred (Louise) Lemke; and one sister, Dorothy King, all of Almond, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Morgan of Weyauwega, Wis.; many other relatives and friends, especially his walking and fishing pal, Lovell Golden of Altoona, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Paulette Sowinski; and two brothers-in-law, Donald King and LaVern Morgan.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2001, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, with Pastor Paul D.L. Oppedahl officiating. Burial will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Park in Wausau, where American Legion Post #10 will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and an hour prior to services Friday at the church.
