Robert C. Wais
ONALASKA, Wis. - Robert C. Wais, 70, died at the Franciscan/Skemp Health Care Facility on Friday, December 12, 1997.
He was born October 18, 1927, in Cashton to Joseph and Viola (Heiser) Wais.
He served with the United States Navy from 1945-1946, and was a member of the Bangor American Legion Post.
Robert and Colletta (Klos) were married on October 17, 1950.
He played semi-pro baseball in the Chicago White Sox organization, and later played for the local semi-pro teams.
He was an avid sports fan, sports man, and loved to hunt and fish.
He worked as a meatcutter for Skogens IGA, and since his retirement, had worked part time for Festival Foods.
He was the best husband, dad and grandpa in the whole world, and is survived by his wife, Colletta; two daughters, Jean Marie (Mark) Smith of La Crosse, and Cloann (Ron) Schultz of Winona; two sons, Michael (Deb) Wais of West Salem, and Charles (Jayne) Wais of Pardeeville, Wisconsin; his grandchildren, Bobbie Jean and Jessie Smith; Kylie, Alyssa, and Ian Schultz; Samantha, Danielle, Rachel, and Robert Waiss; three sisters, Mary Wolf of Bangor, Dorothy (Frank) Zahn of La Crosse, and Betty Wais of Cashton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
The Reverend William Matzek will officiate and burial will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main Street, Onalaska, on Sunday from 7 to 8:30 and at the church on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the service.
A rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Olean A. Pettis
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Olean A. Pettis, age 92, of Eden Prairie, Minn., and formerly of La Crosse, died Dec. 12, 1997 in Castle Ridge Care Center, Eden Prairie, Minn.
She was born in Owatonna, Minn., on Aug. 24, 1905, to Andrew and Molina (Nelson) Thompson.
She married Spencer Pettis on Aug. 5, 1939 in The Little Brown Church in the Vail in Nashua, Iowa.
She was a proud charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in La Crosse.
She is survived by one daughter, Jane (James) Nichols of Bloomington, Minn.; two grandchildren, Matthew and Amalia (Mia); and two sisters, Verna Coughlin of La Crosse, and Mildred Harris of Austin, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Spencer, on Dec. 13, 1983, both parents, one sister, Neta, and one brother, Alex.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4141 Mormon Coulee Road.
Rev. Glenn Leaf will officiate with entombment to be in Garden of Peace Mausoleum, Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends and family can call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services in the church.
The Blaschke Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mina Huber, nee, Nash
Mina Huber, nee, Nash, quietly passed away at 98 years of age at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home in La Crosse, on Friday, December 12, 1997.
Mina was born on May 26, 1899 in Houston, Minnesota, but she lived in La Crosse, for most of her adult life.
She moved to La Crosse, shortly after high school to attend La Crosse Business College after which she worked for Moen Photo.
She then married Harry Huber who preceded her in death on January 2, 1973.
Mina was very active in the Order of Eastern Star and had served as Worthy Matron.
She was also an active member of the English Lutheran Church.
She lived at Bethany-on-Cass from 1989 until she moved to Bethany-Riverside just a few months ago.
She was a neat lady who will be much missed by all who knew her!
She is survived by her son, Charles of Elmhurst, Illinois; four grandchildren, Kathleen (Wayne) Kubich of Barrington, Ill., David (Carol) Huber of Lakewood, Colo., Christina (John) Ughetta of Katy, Texas, and Anne (Scott) Martenson of Wheaton, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Colin Kubick, Erika Kubick, Connor Ughetta, Andrew Ughetta, and Rachel Martenson; and a sister, Lylah Campbell of Houston, Minn.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, and a brother.
Services will be held on Monday, December 15, 1997 at the English Lutheran Church at 11 a.m.
Reverend Roger Black will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the English Lutheran Church.
Dickinson Family Funeral Homes are assisting with arrangements.

Helen D. Wavra
Helen D. Wavra, age 82, of La Crosse, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997 at Bethany Riverside Care Center.
She was born in La Crosse on Aug. 11, 1915 to Joseph and Anna (Kotek) Wavra.
Helen graduated from Aquinas High School in 1934. She retired as a legal secretary.
She is survived by two brothers, Joseph L. (Bonny) Wavra and William F. (Merlyn) Wavra, both of La Crosse; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the Marian Chapel of St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, Sixth and Main St., La Crosse. Rev. Robert Cook will officiate with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
Memorials of your choice are requested.

Eugene J. Fuchs
Eugene J. Fuchs, age 101, a resident of the Franciscan Skemp Nursing Home, passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997.
He was born March 21, 1896 in La Crosse to Jacob and Anna (Auberger) Fuchs. He married Rose Kucera on May 26, 1924 in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He was employed at the La Crosse Tribune since he was 17 years old, retiring at age 67 with 50 years of service. He loved to fish on the Mississippi River, going every day until he was well into his 90s.
He is survived by his daughter, Rosemary (Edwin) Miller of Elburn, Ill.; five grandchildren, Mary Beth, David, Jon, Sue, and Joel; and three great-grandchildren, Michael, Alyssa Rose, Brian Jacob; two sisters, Alberta Fuchs, Marcie Christopher, both of La Crosse; and a brother, Herb of La Crosse; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Rose on July 25, 1986; two sisters, Marie and Angie; and three brothers, Joseph, John, and Adrian.

Janice Lee Petersen
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Janice Lee Petersen, age 57, Black River Falls, Wis., died at her home on Friday, Dec. 12, 1997.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Burial of cremains will be in Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the Torgerson's Funeral Chapel, Black River Falls; and from 9 a.m. until time of services Monday at the church.

Roy C. Van Riper
ETTRICK, Wis. - Roy C. Van Riper, age 74, of Ettrick, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997 at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Tomah, Wis.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Living Hope Lutheran Church in Ettrick, Wis.
Burial will follow in South Beaver Creek Cemetery in rural Ettrick.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Smith Mortuary in Galesville, and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Steven Edgar
READSTOWN, Wis. - Steven Edgar, 33, of rural Viola, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997 in the University Hospital in Madison.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Sugar Grove Church of Christ.
Burial in Readstown Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sime Funeral Home, Readstown; and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Louise M. Staxrud
WHITEHALL, Wis. - Louise M. Staxrud, age 88, of Whitehall, Wis., died on Friday, December 12, 1997 in the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's Catholic Church, Whitehall.
Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Barnum, Minn. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7:30 p.m. parish rosary, at the Jack Funeral Home, Whitehall; and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Bernice M. Johnson
HOUSTON, Minn. - Bernice M. Johnson, 80, a resident of the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston, died at the nursing home on Friday, December 12, 1997.
She was born in Mound Prairie Township, rural Houston County, on March 16, 1917 to Frederick and Minnie (Thompson) Unnasch. She married Frank J. Johnson on April 27, 1935 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, South Ridge. He preceded her in death in 1982. Bernice farmed with her husband until moving to La Crescent in 1988. She had been a a resident of Valley View Nursing Home in Houston for the past 2 1/2 years.
Bernice is survived by a daughter, Lois (James) Morcomb of St. Charles, Minn.; three sons, Victor (Judy) Johnson of La Crescent, Benjamin (Joyce) Johnson of Winona, and Richard (Linda) Johnson of La Crescent; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eleanor (Edward) Steinfeldt of Winona, Mildred (Art) Erdman of La Crescent, and Geraldine (Rollie) Steinfeldt of Houston; one brother, Arden (Charlotte) Unnasch; and three sisters, Harriet Papenfuss Sebo, Marion Paulson Winsky, and Dorothy Kinstler.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 15, 1997 at 2 p.m. from First Ev. Lutheran Church, La Crescent. Rev. Oliver H. Lindholm and Rev. Paul A. Ibisch will officiate. Burial will be in Bush Cemetery, rural Ridgeway, Minn. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of services. The family requests that memorials be given to either St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church in Winona or to First Ev. Lutheran Church in Winona or to First Ev. Lutheran Church in La Crescent.
