Irene E. Wojahn
ONALASKA, Wis. - Irene E. Wojahn, age 74, of 1553 West Young Drive died in the Franciscan Healthcare Center on Wednesday, December 31, 1997. She was born in La Crosse on November 9, 1923, to John and Anna R. (Oertel) Miller. She married Edward Wojahn in La Crosse on September 16, 1948. Irene was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Coulee Region Chapter of Ex-Prisoners of war and she had a great love for all the children that she cared for throughout her entire life.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Schoenfeld of Onalaska and Darlene Nicolai of Whitehall; four grandchildren, Erika and Elissa Schoenfeld and Joey and Scott Nicolai; three sisters, Evelyn (Elwin) Hesselberg of Bangor, Helen (Robert) La Sarge of La Crosse and Deloris Paisley of Mindoro; and four brothers, Harold Miller of La Crosse, Richard Miller of Milwaukee, David (Doris) Miller of Nekoosa and Wilbur Miller of West Salem. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Alfred.
Services will be held on Monday, January 5, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Reverend Steven Staude will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sletten McKee Hanson Funeral Home on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the First Evangelical Lutheran Church or Luther High School.

Helen L. Roellich
LA CROSSE, Wis. - On New Year's Eve, Helen Roellich was called to eternal rest. Helen was born on Nov. 14, 1922 to Henry and Mary Moeves. She married Ralph Roellich on June 17, 1944. Helen was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who devoted much of her time to serving others.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph; three daughters, Mary Foley, Susan (Arden) Schock and Michelle (Terry) Olson; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Woestman and many nieces and nephews.
Her departure leaves a great void in our hearts, but she will live forever in our treasured memories. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 1998, in the Marian Chapel of St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral Catholic Church, 530 Main St. Rev. Robert Cook will officiate with entombment at the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum, Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends and family may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service in the church. Blaschke Funeral assisted the family with arrangements.

Betty J. Voss
WINONA, Minn. - Betty J. Voss, 70, 68 W. Howard Street, Winona, Minn. died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in the Emergency Room of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.
She was born Nov. 13, 1927, in Winona to Wayne and Ruth (Stinson) Westerman. On Feb. 8, 1947, she married Wallace J. Voss at Faith Lutheran Church in Winona. Betty was a long time employee in the Children's Department of the H. Choare & Co. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and its Martha Circle.
Survivors include her husband, Wallace; two sons, Richard Voss, Chicago, Ill. and Robert Voss, Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Lynn (John) Ferris, Colleyville, Tex.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (Jenney) Westerman, La Crosse. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Fawcett Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Dumke officiating. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 7 to 9 p.m. and after 12:30 p.m. Monday. A memorial is being arranged.

Beverly J. Staats
ONALASKA, Wis. - Beverly J. Staats, 63, of Onalaska, died at her home on Friday, January 2, 1998.
She was born January 5, 1934, in La Crosse to Oscar and Mabel (Anderson) Bakken. She married George Buisse on July 7, 1984, at Seward, Alaska.
She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 1971 and taught in the Onalaska Middle Schools for 23 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Sally Weber of Wauconda, Ill., Jacqueline (Richard Oberst) Staats of Manhatten, Kansas, and Nicky (Tom) Reisenhauer of Cambridge, Wis.; by a son, Thomas (Jamie) Staats of Indianapolis, Ind.; by four stepdaughters, Barbara Mundform of Lime Springs, Catherine Sagen of Harmony, Minn., Patricia Buisse of La Crescent, Minn., and Mary Beth Strong of Bastrop, Texas; by two sisters, Audrey Herold of Stoddard, and Lois Berra of Albany, Wis.; by three brothers, Orin, Clifford, and Roland Bakken of La Crosse; and by six grandchildren, John Weber, Michael, Jennie, and Matthew Reinsenauer, and Jessie and Megan Staats. She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Hammes.
Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main Street, Onalaska, on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Albert J. Hammes
WEST SALEM, Wis. - Albert J. Hammes, 81, of West Salem, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at the Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born January 30, 1916, at St. Joseph Ridge to August and Caroline (Schumacher) Hammes. On August 27, 1940, he married Jeanette Schmidt at St. Joseph Ridge. They enjoyed almost 55 years of marriage until Jeanette preceded Albert in death on August 1, 1995. Albert dairy farmed and raised tobacco for 37 years before retiring from farming in 1961. He then enjoyed many other trades in addition to farming, such as his employment at Lakeview Health Care Center in West Salem as a nurse's aid until 1976. Albert and Jeanette also worked as houseparents for the St. Francis Group Homes and on their free time, they traveled much of the world. Albert was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church of West Salem; a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1920, La Crosse and past President of the AFL-CIO Local No. 1403.
Survivors include eight children, John (Sharen) of Bangor, Marilynn (Richard) Thompson of Salt Lake City, James (Dawn), Bernard (Sharon) and Gary (Nancy), all of Onalaska, Daniel (Julie) of Holmen, Karen (Jeffrey) Lynch of Roanoke, Va., and Patrick of West Salem; 24 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Caroline Weber of La Crosse, Rita Weber of St. Joseph Ridge, Loretta Galstad of La Crosse and Mary (David) Quinn of Sparta; and a brother, Arthur (Evelyn) Hammes of La Crosse. In addition to his wife, Albert was preceded in death by his parents; two infant daughters, Mary and Kathleen; and ten sisters and brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, January 6, at 11 a.m. from St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 210 W. Hamilton St., West Salem. Father Bob Hegenbarth will officiate. Entombment will be in the St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse.
Friends may call at the Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. where there will be a rosary at 8 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.

Virginia A. Luedke
Virginia A. Luedke, 83, of La Crosse, died at Bethany Riverside Nursing Home, Wednesday, December 31, 1997.
She was born July 2, 1914, at Savannah, Ill., to Frank and Roseanne (Gerlich) Willard. She married William Luedke on April 23, 1938, in La Crosse. She had been a cub scout den mother, an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of Miriam Circle.
In addition to her husband, William, she is survived by a daughter, Karen (Raymond) Poellinger of La Crosse; a son, Dr. Dan (Dr. Susan) Luedke of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Irene (Paul) Coneway of Hereford, Texas; and grandchildren, Brian (Dawn) Poellinger, Scott Poellinger, Kristi (Paul) Egland, Dana Luedke, and Matthew Luedke.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Reverend Ted Dewald will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette Street, on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 1 p.m. until the service.

Fay "Scoop" Jacobson
VIROQUA, Wis. - Fay "Scoop" Jacobson, age 84, of Vernon Estates, Route #4, Viroqua died suddenly Friday morning, January 2, 1998, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. He was born in September 12, 1913, in Viroqua to Jacob and Sarah (Bowman) Jacobson. On October 5, 1935, he married Millicent ``Millie'' Matthes in Viroqua. She died on April 18, 1991. He worked for the Ford Garage, Viroqua Body Shop and for several years prior to his retirement was a partner in the B & B Body Shop in Viroqua. In his early years he raced stock cars and his love for harness racing never ceased. For many years he trained horses.
He is survived by four daughters, Frances (Keith) Smith of Viroqua, Betty (Charles) Dunnum of Richfield, Minn., Marlene (Richard) Bertschinger of Milwaukee, Jean (Donald) Hall-Riley of Viroqua; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert "Rob" Jacobson of Viroqua; other relatives and many friends. He will also be missed by his companion, Winnie, his dog. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda Stoll, Violette Dittmer; and seven brothers, Harry, Harold, William, Carl, Henry, Ray, and Fred Jacobson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 1998, at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua with Pastor Frank Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the Viola Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may also call after 8 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Dollie Smith
BOSCOBEL/STOUGHTON, Wis. - Dollie Smith, 91, of Stoughton formally of Boscobel passed away on Friday, January 2, 1998, at the Skaalen Nursing Home in Stoughton. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 4, 1998, at 1 p.m. at the Thoni-Kendall Funeral Home in Boscobel. Burial in the Tavera Cemetery Richland County. Friends may call on Sunday from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the Thoni-Kendall Funeral Home in Boscobel.

Verna L. Linberg
HIXTON, Wis. - Verna L. Linberg, 74, Hixton, died on Thursday, January 1, 1998, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hixton, with burial in Sechlerville Cemetery. Friends may call at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, on Sunday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday one hour prior to services.

MERRILLAN, Wis. - Coral N. Jarrett, 91, of Merrillan, died on Thursday, January 1, 1998, at Sunset Memorial Nursing Home, Neillsville. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 1998, at 10 a.m. at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Merrillan. Friends may call at the Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services Monday.

Alice J. Ruedy
BANGOR, Wis. - Alice J. Ruedy, 87, of Bangor, died early Friday morning, Jan. 2, at home. She is survived by two sons, Alan (Catherine) Ruedy, Sparta and Donald (Judy) Ruedy, Bangor; daughter-in-law, Betty Ruedy, Dakota, Minn.; brother, Lee (Charlotte) Jorgenson, Fayetteville, Ark.; sister-in-law, Ardis Jorgenson, Sparta; brother-in-law, Gerald Dickenson, Sparta; very special friend, Kay Strehl, La Crescent, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Michael (Sherry) Ruedy, Winona, Minn., Wanda (Wayne) Boehnke, Dakota, Minn., Debbie (Dean) Kerrigan, Houston, Minn., Jenny Ruedy, Minnesota City, Minn., Michelle (Mike) Rapp and Mark (Kristi) Ruedy of Sparta, Laura (Steve) Warnke, Sheboygan, Wis., Ed Ruedy, Bangor; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Page-Smith Funeral Home, Sparta with Rev. Tiff Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 8 a.m. until the service.

Ellsworth S. Sweno
BLAIR, Wis. - Ellsworth S. Sweno, age 58, of Blair, Wis. died on Friday, January 2, 1998, in his home.
Ellsworth was born February 13, 1939, at home in rural Taylor, Wis. to Glen and Eva (Littlejohn) Sweno. He married Sharon L. Hardie on May 31, 1964, in Blair, Wis.
Mr. Sweno served with the Red Arrow Division of the 32nd. Infantry during the Berlin Crisis and was stationed in Fort Louis, Wash.
Ellsworth farmed and owned purebred Guernseys and was active in the Wisconsin Guernsey Breeders Association. He drove bus for ORC Industries in Arcadia and later for the Blair-Taylor School District.
Ellsworth enjoyed his woodworking and was active in the Lutheran churches.
Mr. Sweno was a member of the North Beaver Creek Parish Faith Lutheran Church of rural Ettrick and the Knudtson-Mattison American Legion Post #231 of Blair.
Ellsworth is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Sarah (Calvin) Lebakken and David Sweno, both of Blair, Wis.; two grandchildren, Kristin and Justin Lebakken; his mother, Eva Sweno of Blair, Wis.; a brother, Wayne (Marguerite) Sweno of Blair, Wis.; and a sister, Linda (Ralph) Lusk of Hixton, Wis. In addition to his father, Ellsworth was preceded in death by two sons, Kris and Stephen and a brother, Carl.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 1998 at 11 a.m. in the North Beaver Creek Parish Faith Lutheran Church with burial in the church Cemetery, both in rural Ettrick, Wis. Rev. Tim Ehling will officiate. Graveside military services will be conducted by the Knudtson-Mattison American Legion Post #231.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 4, 1998 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Blair, Wis., also one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
